"This must be really hard on her too"
That line... has been forever stuck on a loop in my head ever since I first heard it. That it's the last thing they say, that they take away about Ruby as a person in that scene. Especially while watching V9, and just how much everything has been weighing down on Ruby, and her tendency to repress her negative emotions and refuse to take time to let herself feel them and reflect is now being unpacked and examined much closer as the Ever After functions in such a way that she will literally get nowhere unless she looks inside herself, this scene has again been swimming to the surface of my mind, and it's just something I feel like revisiting.
(also it's rg white day today so, I'm legally allowed to be insufferable about Them, though this is in part relevant to V9 in regards to Ruby)
Most other people who have met and know Ruby just kind of accept that she is who she is, or very quickly come to. She's The Hero. The Leader. The Spark Of Hope Everyone is Inspired By. We rarely see her talk about her personal feelings and motivations, and it's never really called into question besides being touched upon briefly in her first meeting with Ozpin and Blake in the first volume about why she wants to be a huntress:
Ozpin: And what is an adorable girl such as yourself doing at a school designed to train warriors?
Ruby: Well... I want to be a Huntress.
Ozpin: You want to slay monsters?
Ruby: Yeah! I only have two more years of training left at Signal! And then I'm going to apply to Beacon! You see, my sister's starting there this year, and she's trying to become a Huntress, and I'm trying to become a Huntress 'cause I wanna help people. My parents always taught us to help others, so I thought, Hey, I might as well make a career out of it!
(1x01)
Ruby: I love books. Yang used to read to me every night before bed. Stories of heroes and monsters... They're one of the reasons I want to be a Huntress!
Blake: And why is that? Hoping you'll live happily ever after?
Ruby: Well, I'm hoping we all will. As a girl, I wanted to be just like those heroes in the books... Someone who fought for what was right, and protected people who couldn't protect themselves!
Blake: That's... very ambitious for a child. Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale.
Ruby: Well, that's why we're here! To make it better.
(1x03)
...With further insight from Yang at times:
Yang: I'm not like Ruby, she's always wanted to be a Huntress. It's like she said, ever since she was a kid, she'd dreamt about being the heroes in the books. Helping people and saving the day, and never asking for anything else in return.
(2x10)
But rarely do we see Ruby open up about herself as an individual and her struggles, and even rarer still is the occasion someone prompts her too.
And so it's always stuck out to me that in 5x05 she gets asked the questions that... no one else has really asked her before.
"How do you handle all of this?"
"How can you be so confident?"
"How are you okay with any of this?"
Tumblr media
In the Dojo scene (5x05) when we see Oscar pick up on Ruby trying to hide how sad she is (after being reminded of Penny's death) while trying to encourage Oscar, we see her recompose herself, interrupt Oscar when he starts to ask a question after noticing her sullen expression, and then she tries to leave, excusing herself awkwardly.
"Well, see you upstairs"
(very subtle Ruby) but before she can do so, Oscar finds he has to ask:
"How do you handle all of this?"
A question she initially doesn't... actually answer. She very deliberately avoids talking about herself, her own feelings, and how she's been handling all this. Instead she focuses on reassuring Oscar at first, saying what she thinks will make him feel better after hearing him elaborate, confiding in her about how afraid and overwhelmed he is by his current situation.
"I'm... scared. I'm more scared than I've ever been in my life, than I ever thought was possible. I always knew that I wanted to be more than a farmhand, but this?"
"...Who would ask for this?"
Oscar didn't really have a choice in being pulled into the war with Salem and becoming a huntsman, he was reluctantly pulled into it by Ozpin. WBY and JNR decide to join the fight because they're inspired by Ruby and following her as a leader.
...So why does Ruby willingly ask and choose to be a huntress? Why did she freely leave home? Why would she choose to risk her life in this fight against Salem and to take on the responsibility of saving the world? (It certainly doesn't feel like a coincidence that these questions are being revisited in one way or another in V9)
Ruby gives him a very generalised answer in response to his question at first that talks about everyone as a group, and leaves out talking about herself as an individual specifically:
"We all went to Beacon because we wanted to help people"
"None of us chose this either"
"We just have to press on"
Tumblr media
And you can see Oscar's expression growing more frustrated as he's facing away from Ruby, because that's not an answer to the question he actually asked. Because he asked about how Ruby as an individual is handling all of this. Ruby genuinely wants to reassure Oscar, but to him it comes across as insincere, like she's putting up a facade, especially since he saw only a moment ago that she was on the verge of tears and clearly upset about something, so he knows she's not being honest about how she's feeling when Oscar asks her how she's handling all of this.
And so he snaps and pushes back:
"How can you be so confident? People have tried to kill you, the world's about to go to war all over again, how are you okay with any of this?!"
(*glances at the v8 finale and v9* boi howdy those words sure do have a different weight to them now huh)
And while realising he may have been too harsh or blunt and later apologizes, it actually does succeed in getting Ruby to reflect a little and confide in him what she'd been through at the FoB and her losing Pyrrha and Penny, her own doubts and fears about the fight with Salem, and how it had shaped her resolve moving forward.
"When Beacon fell, I lost two of my friends: Penny Polendina and Pyrrha Nikos. I didn't know them for very long, but that doesn't change the fact that they were two of the most kind-hearted people I have ever met. But that didn't save them. Pyrrha thought that if there was even the smallest chance of helping someone, then it was a chance worth taking. And because of that, she died fighting a battle she knew she couldn't win. And Penny... was killed... just to make a statement."
"I am scared! But not just for me. What happened at Beacon shows that Salem doesn't care if you're standing against her or not. She'll kill anybody. And that, scares me most of all. Pyrrha... Penny... I'd be lying if I said it didn't hurt. That I didn't think about them everyday since I lost them. That I didn't wish I had spent more time with them. If it had been me instead, I know they would have kept fighting too. No matter how dangerous it was. So that's what I choose to do. To keep moving forward."
And again, what stands out to me is that the last thing Oscar takes away from his conversation with Ruby in the Dojo isn't... how inspiring she is or his admiration and respect for her (though he very clearly has that too, "she must've been one of the best huntresses at beacon!"). The last thing he says in this scene, the last thing he takes away is instead this:
"This must be really hard on her too."
The more time that passes through the series and seeing Ruby slowly put under more and more pressure, and stretching herself thinner over time, (like her semblance evolves so she can break herself down to carry others in V8, and in V9 her friends have been shrunk down and she is the one responsible for carrying her team on her shoulders) to help others and save everyone and yet still fail and lose those close to her, and having to just keep trying, keep moving forward no matter what, never stopping or slowing down even if there is no clear end she can see is heartbreaking and exhausting.
And it just makes rewatching the Dojo scene hit even harder. Because yes Oscar! It really is hard on her too! And it was so damn satisfying to have someone see and acknowledge that as well as admiring her and being inspired by her. Being moved by both her strength of character AND her vulnerability. And so it's noteworthy that Oscar is the one who does this, and who pushed her to open up, even just a little, about her grief over the FoB and fears about the fight with Salem.
Especially considering the visual framing of Ruby opening up to Oscar about what she's been through while standing in an open door frame exposed to the outside cementing that as the purpose of the scene: (she is literally opening up to him)
Tumblr media
And the fact that Oscar has a kind of a different response from when we've usually seen Ruby comfort, reassure and inspire someone before. Usually it causes them to reflect on themselves and their own struggles, (like with Blake, Jaune, Penny and Qrow) not also on hers as well.
Even with those she has a mutual sense of understanding and solidarity with, like Blake (because of their ideals) and Jaune (because of both of them sharing the responsibility of being leaders) the way they comfort and uplift her in turn when they see her doubting herself is often a double edged sword.
Jaune: You didn't drag us out here. You gave us the courage to follow you.
(4x10)
Blake: I know you don't always know what to do, but that's never stopped you from doing something. I've always looked up to you Ruby.
(8x08)
Yang and Qrow also do this, and it comes with the additional punch of comparing Ruby to Summer as an ideal she strives to be:
Yang: Mom took a risk the day she left, and I don’t think. I don’t think it went the way she wanted it to. But she’s still my hero.
(8x11)
(Summer was Yang's hero, and now Ruby is too, so she has to try to live up to that)
Ruby: This says I'm a Huntress now. But I don't feel like I know much more than I did at Beacon.
Qrow: That feeling never goes away. Your mom, Summer, would be proud of you.
Ruby: What do you think she would've done if she learned the truth about Salem? That she can't be destroyed.
Qrow: Pressed on, I think. Like you. She was always the best of us.
(7x04)
(if Summer would've pressed on, then Ruby has to keep doing that too. If she was the best, then Ruby has to be the best.)
Because, and I want to make this clear, I think Ruby appreciates and is greatful for how much they believe in her and look up to her, and it absolutely does inspire her to keep moving forward, to stand up and fight even when she's doubting herself. But it also... unintentionally places more pressure on her to try and live up to those expectations, and it deprives her of an equal, of someone to relate to and help share her burden instead of upholding her on a pedestal and having unwavering faith in her as the smaller soul everyone looks to. To bottle up her negative feelings because well, everyone believes in her as this optimistic leader who is this endless source of hope and inspiration to everyone around her, and everyone needs her to Keep Being That, and that's more important, right? She can't let them down, right?
"It's up to you to make things better, isn't it? Everything all depends on you! Your sister needs you, your friends need you. The whole world needs you to keep fighting forever and ever against an invincible monster that took your mother!"
(9x04)
Ironically, this (in part) comes back to the person who reinforced this flawed mentality in Ruby in the first place. Ozpin.
"But if you aren't always performing at your best, what reason do you give others to follow you?"
(1x10)
This was genuinely good advice for Ruby's situation at the time in V1 after her conflict with Weiss, to take her role as leader more seriously, and well intentioned I'm sure. But in the long run? Ruby has been basing her self worth on how much she can give or do for others. On being that perfect leader.
Ruby feels like she constantly needs to be a pillar of strength and support for everyone around her as a the ever-cheerful and inspiring leader, that she has to prioritize them over herself, and if she lets herself admit how much she's hurting or how scared she is, she'd be afraid of those around her losing faith. What reason would they have to follow her if she failed them like that? Thus as a result, she struggles allowing herself to open up about her own feelings and to rely on others for emotional support. And as we've starting seeing recently, bottles it up until she reaches breaking point.
Another element to consider, and there might be an earlier or more obvious indication of this, but I started to notice it in V2 when she's visibly the most depressed and worried about Blake's behaviour as she's spiralling and overworking herself, saying the party is pointless if they can't get Blake to go.
"Date or no date, none of this will matter if we can't get Blake to go."
(2x05)
Yang and Weiss are also both concerned for Blake's wellbeing, but they're also excited about the dance for themselves, (Yang talking about what dress she's going to wear, Weiss about her date, what decorations they should have, etc.) which we see when they're planning the party. For Ruby, the only point of the dance is to cheer Blake up, to get her to relax.
"What's the point? Who cares about the dance if Blake isn't going?"
(2x06)
But then Yang convinces Blake she needs to take time for herself and relax, and when Blake shows up at the party, afterwards Ruby is... then completely stumped when she no longer has someone to worry over, and ironically struggles to relax or enjoy herself at the party like everyone else.
Blake neglected her physical needs to push herself, while Ruby appears to neglect her own emotional needs. She focuses on other people's problems and struggles, concerns herself with their wellbeing and happiness, and we don't really see her think about her own. It's admirable how much she's dedicated to being a huntress, but unlike the rest of her team, she doesn't really have anything outside of that that she wants for herself. Her entire sense of self completely revolves around being a huntress.
Ozpin: Well, you can't spend your whole life on the battlefield, even if you may want to.
Ruby: (crossing her arms, looking annoyed) Yeah, that lesson's been floating around a lot lately.
Ozpin: (staring out at the dancing couples) If you think about it, fighting and dancing aren't so different. Two partners interlocked, although one wrong move on the ballroom merely leads to a swollen foot.
(2x07)
This is said while looking out on the dancing couples and comparing dancing to fighting, aka, romantic foreshadowing, which I've talked about in more detail here
(also hey thanks Oz for giving Ruby some good advice to follow the piece you gave her about being a leader in the previous volume)
It's also interesting how this is in the same volume Oobleck questions Weiss, Blake and Yang's motives for being huntresses, and later on during the campfire scene we see them each open up about their own doubts and affirming their resolve to one another, but Ruby is completely excluded from this. Instead we are given insight about Ruby from Yang's perspective, but not from Ruby herself. Because everyone assumes, even her sister, that she is the simple soul, the pure hearted hero, and therefore has no doubts or deeper reason for what she does. When in actual fact, both are true, as we start to see in the Dojo scene.
And when she allows herself to confide in Oscar about her own experiences and losses, to admit that she is scared, it actually helps in this situation. Opening up is what allows her to relate to Oscar's own fears and let her words reach him. To reflect on what she'd been through and reaffirm her own resolve. And a mutual sense of understanding in each other and their fears is established. And this makes sense, after all, allowing yourself to be vulnerable and being more honest about your more negative emotions (being sad/afraid/frustrated) leads to empathising with others and understanding them better. And Oscar goes on to do this in future volumes in trying to empathize and be vulnerable and honest with others, which for better (in Emerald, Hazel and Ozpin's case) or worse (in Ironwood's case) is always worth trying to do, because if you don't then no one can understand and reach out to each other, and nothing will truly change. Which I firmly believe is something Ruby needs to learn more in regards to her Silver Eyes and how she uses them.
Ruby has pushed Oscar to be braver and more confident in himself, (like Ruby) while Oscar has pushed Ruby to be more introspective and honest about her own feelings (like Oscar). Which is the part of both character's struggles, Oscar in overcoming his fears and Ruby in dealing with her own feelings.
There's even a callback to this scene in the V7 finale when the song "Until the End" which is a Ruby song, is playing. As Yang is asking JNR where Oscar is, the exact lyrics that play when Oscar is mentioned are:
"The tears that you've shed,
May find a tree to water,
But only when you're stronger"
Literally the words "tree" and "Oscar" overlap here.
During the Dojo scene when Ruby opens up about the hardships and losses she's endured, and the fears she still has, but also her resolve to keep moving forward, we see her wiping away her tears and reassuring Oscar, whose surname is Pine, a type of tree, like the one being referred to in Ruby's song, a tree that she's watered and helped "grow" metaphorically speaking, as a person, who is moved by her both her strength and her vulnerability. (yes yes I know it's Extremely Corny but the symbolism is Still There)
This could also mean in context of V9 and the Ever After tree that once Ruby is able to properly break down and cry, to grieve and embrace her pain, to be a rose that blooms in the rain that opens up to her team and herself, that she will be able to move forward to the tree and find her way back home.
It's also playing into her allusion as the Rose from the Little Prince as well, as she tries to face away from Oscar and quickly wipes away her tears:
“She did not want him to see her crying. She was such a proud flower…”
And it doesn't just stop there either.
In V6, after telling JNR about Jinn, Oz and Salem, we see how angry and disheartened they all are:
Jaune: "Everything we did was for nothing!"
Blake: "That's not true..."
Nora: "Really? Cos' it sure does sound like it!"
Blake: "I... um..."
Ren: "If Salem can't be killed, then how are we supposed to win this?"
Jaune: "Wow... Great plan, everyone."
After Jaune's outburst, we see Oscar look up over to Ruby, as if he's expecting her to say something uplifting or encouraging, because that's usually what Ruby does at times like this, right? But then he sees her downcast expression, and all of a sudden you see Oscar look back down as he realises that Ruby isn't going to speak up, because she's taking Jaune's critiscism the hardest out of all of them. And it settles in for him how much this is weighing down on her, because she's the leader, because she's always the one expected to have a plan or to know what to say, because she feels like she has a responsibility to live up to that image for all of them.
Tumblr media
That this must be really hard on her too.
And we know this to be true when we later hear her confide in Maria:
"What am I supposed to tell Jaune and his team when we don't even have a plan?"
"I feel like I'm letting everyone down"
Before, Oz was considered the "Leader" of their whole group. But Oscar's trust in Ruby outweighed Oz's fear, which was why he fought for control against Oz and told Ruby how to use Jinn, because he believed and trusted in her more as a leader. And by entrusting her with that knowledge, gave her the means to make her own choice of what was right, and ultimately challenge and remove Oz from a position of leadership. And in v6 as Ruby has that role instead, she feels more responsible for their group, for their mission, than ever before, and in turn, in this scene here, Oscar feels responsible for Ruby and the burden they share.
(it's almost like Ruby and Oscar both share Oz as a foil and they're supposed to be better than him and learn from his mistakes which in turn inspires him to be better.)
"There is a rose... and I believe she has tamed me..."
“But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose...”
(the Little Prince)
And that's the reason why Oscar chooses to try to speak up in this moment to try and direct the attention on to himself instead, trying to defuse the tension of the situation after seeing how Ruby is struggling. Interesting is how he isn't moved to action by seeking inspiration and strength from Ruby alone as others are, but also finds the courage in himself to overcome his own fear and hesitation in a need to support her, in an attempt to alleviate the burden he sees weighing down on her.
Tumblr media
Because she shouldn't have to always be seen and believed as the one who bears it. Not alone. Because no one should.
Gosh, it's not like one of Oscar's allusions is the Little Prince who learnt that the Rose was his responsibility to go back and take care of right?
*gestures at how Oscar ran away after his confrontation with Jaune and just so happened to come back wearing combat gear that is a very obvious nod to the Little Prince, as well as taking inspiration from Ruby's Mistral outfit and incorporating her red as his secondary colour, focused on Ruby's reaction, and how Ruby is literally referred to as "the Rose" by Tyrian in v4 and has a semblance that has her burst into rose petals*
Or the boy from the Warrior in the Woods who felt that someone should take care of the Warrior for a change, the way she had for everyone else for so long?
“You’ve spent all these years looking after us. I thought maybe it would be nice if someone looked after you for a change. Because that’s what I can do. Because no one else will"
(The Warrior in the Wood, Fairytales of Remnant)
No no, of course not, that's totally crazy.

@rosegardenweek | Day 4: Fairytale AU
This was actually a prompt in the very first RG week I took part in back in March of 2019! So I have an old sketch of my idea back then to share, which I roughly based this drawing on. It was Snow White inspired, I believe! I’m happy with my improvement in 4 years, even though it’s not super fair to compare a sketch with a finished drawing haha

Buck & Eddie: Air Rescue Therapy???
Tumblr media
Before I delve into this, let me be crystal clear, I always have and I always will ship BUDDIE and only BUDDIE!
Now back to the regularly scheduled program...
This picture above is from OS's day in the life video and IMO, based solely on the civilian clothes Eddie and Tommy are wearing and since Buck’s in mostly civilian clothes, except for his hoodie which is an LAFD one, to me it looks like Buck might be working through a newly developed fear by doing something with air rescue. Or maybe he's questioning something else about the job but based on their clothes, they're not on duty.
Why do I think this might be what they're doing?
First, Buck's wearing his white high tops and the only time he wears them is when something is going on with him and/or he's uncertain about something like his job.
Tumblr media
Reminder, he was wearing them in 3x1 - 3x3 during the Tsunami.
Tumblr media
He was wearing them in 4x13 and 4x14 during the shooting.
Tumblr media
And he was wearing them in 6x15 when him and Eddie were at the cemetery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Second, something is clearly going on with Buck in early season 7 and it's evident from his hesitancy when the alarm sounds and he looks up to the ceiling like he doesn't want to go when they're being dispatched to an emergency. He's NEVER done that before so IMO, he's struggling with something that's dealing with work. Maybe the heights of being in a helicopter after being struck by lightning. Reminder, they'll be flying into a hurricane when they go rescue Bobby and Athena so maybe Buck's trying "to be the same old Buck mostly for the sake of everyone else" (his words from 6x15) but Eddie notices because he KNOWS HIM TO HIS CORE.
Tumblr media
Why do I believe this?
Well, I always give credit to whom it's due and after I watched the video, I remembered one of @loveyourownsmiilee's speculation posts that I read either last week or week before (I can't remember when I did because there's been a lot of promos) but she pointed out that Bobby's voice over with him saying, "I can't tell you how to feel about the job... only you can do that" followed by the camera panning to Eddie, may have been a "red herring" since it's possible Bobby may have actually been talking to Buck or to Eddie about Buck.
The scene they were filming makes it appear that Buck is/was questioning being in the air again especially since it was storming. Reminder, he was 70 feet in the air when he got struck by lightning and it was raining. I think Eddie may have organized a day time helicopter ride (reminder it was never nighttime in Buck’s coma dream) and Eddie talked to Tommy so Buck could take a ride or do some type of training to get over his possible fear.
Reminder, in 5x14 Buck did research to find out where Charlie #3 was and then he took Eddie and Chris to Equine Therapy to help Eddie and I think Eddie’s going to do the same thing for Buck in season 7.
They're paralleling each other again and they're going to be there for each other like never before (paraphrase from one of RG's interviews).

Blurb idea
Matty and rg taking Gigi to get her ears pierced because she’s been begging them for ages and mattys all protective dad and doesn’t want her to have them done
i love this. i think matty makes gigi wait until she is eight years old. then, the day after her eighth birthday, she wakes you guys up and simply says "you promised." and you did. so it's off to town you go to get her ears pierced.
gigi skips ahead of you guys into town, holding shay's hand and whispering that maybe if mum and dad see how easy it is and how cool she will definitely be about then maybe they will drop the wait til youre eight rule for shay and let her get them done earlier.
so they go into claires in the mall and you ask for an ear piecing for your daughter, and matty hangs behind quietly with shay in his arms until they lead gigi over to the seat and he starts asking "so you sanitize the needle right? like it's clean" and "like do most kids cry when they get it done? how much does it hurt them?" and "you wont make her bleed will you? like you'll be careful?" and you're rolling your eyes at the woman who is just saying "yes sir," and "it will sting a little but then it's over," and gigi gets in the chair all confident and chooses her earrings, little gold studs, and then they put the gun to her ear and matty says "gi hold my hand" and she is like "dad i'm fine" but he says "it's not for you, hold my hand" and so she does and squeezes it tight for him.
when the first piercing goes in there is a moment of silence when gigi goes white but her ear goes bright red and matty squeaks, and gigi, trying to be brave, blinks back tears and says "ow" and matty says "you okay? baby you okay?" and the panic in his voice makes gigi cry even though she is saying "i'm fine," through her tears.
"matty, get out," you say.
"what?"
"take shay and go get a pretzel," you say, taking gigis hand "you're stressing her out."
"i'm not stressing her out, i'm taking it seriously."
"it's an ear piercing matthew, you literally have them yourself."
"yes but this is my baby's skin. her tiny ears. its a million times more precious than mine."
"exactly why you cant be here. go. pretzel."
you shove him gently on the chest and he goes, huffing.
"ready?" you ask gigi, and she sniffs and nods and rolls her eyes and says "sorry about my dad," to the woman, "he's just obsessed with me."
you leave claires, gigi skipping ahead of you, looking at her freshly pierced ears any reflection and grinning. matty is leaning up against the wall outside, shay at his ankles, both covered in cinnamon sugar dust.
"let me see, beautiful" he says, and holds gigi's face with both his big hands and says "wow! so pretty"
"right?" gigi says and then starts whining for a pretzel because shay got one and shay is whining because gigi got her ears pierced and she didnt and matty picks up his youngest again and grabs gigi in a tight tight hug and says "i love you so much baby, i love you."
gigi squirms and wriggles out saying "dad you're so weird," and he straightens up and smiles because he knows that she knows she is the most loved kid on the entire planet, only matched by her little sister who he holds close now before she gets to the age she starts calling him weird too.

Hi, Chai! I've been following you for a bit, mostly for the RG content, and I've recently seen you talk about your other non-RWBY interests when I realized that I'm really curious on what other media do you like? (Be it shows, movies, music, games, books, etc.)
Oughh this is a very good question. I'll put them under a read more cause I have a feeling I took this question too literally and it might get just a little bit long because of that. 💦
I'm generally very passive with the media I consume and only draw as much RWBY as I do because RG has had me in a vice grip since V8E1 and isn't letting go anytime soon. 💀 But I do engage with lots of other stuff too! This isn't an exhaustive list, just ones I like lots or re-watch often enough.
Anime
I probably watch this stuff more than anything else. My favourite of all time is probably The Eccentric Family, both seasons. The art direction and the messages of the story just hit very hard for me and I re-watch it pretty much every year. My second favourite is Kekkai Sensen (i prefer the first over second season as they switch directors).
As for others enjoy:
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
Silver Spoon
Yona of the Dawn
Snow White with the Red Hair
Kyousogiga (recommend if you liked Kekkai Sensen)
A Lull in the Sea
Chaika the Coffin Princess [Now why does that name sound so familiar 🤔]
Anohana
Been really enjoying this season's shows and am looking forward to the Winter 2024 lineup (Dungeon Meshi and Yubisaki to Renren at the same time!!)
Shows
Dragon Prince
The Owl House
Good Omens
Games
Nier (2010),
Transistor
Pyre
Zelda Series (Ocarina of Time & Spirit Tracks are my favourites)
Nier: Automata
Honorary mentions to Grand Chase (an old MMO i used to be obsessed with), Avalon Code (a niche DS game that I really liked), Fire Emblem Awakening (a classic) and Animal Crossing (that I played like it was my day job in 2020).
Movies
Can only think of two live actions and the rest are animated/anime 😭
Stardust
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Howl's Moving Castle
HTTYD (1 & 2)
Kubo and the Two Strings
The Wind Rises
From Up on Poppy Hill
Penguin Highway
Books
I don't read as much as I did when I was a kid, but my top three are probably Runemarks, Howl's Moving Castle, and Stardust (I like the last two a lot because I liked their movies).
Webcomics
Used to be really into these and wanted to write my own before Webtoon kinda... gentrified the entire industry. But hey, I can still talk about some of my favourites!
Shaderunners (queer heist in a roaring 20sish setting)
Witchy (queer south East Asian inspired fantasy adventure)
Kochab (sapphic story between a skier that gets lost and meets a fire spirit I think? It's final updates are going up this month!)
Lady of the Shard (all time favourite. queer polyam lovestory between a goddess and her acolyte. Complete. I reread it every year, I love it so much. The rest of the authors work is also great, you might know them from Cucumber Quest).
Then lastly...
Music
I mostly listen to indie/folk more than anything else, with a bit of jazz/R&B thrown in for flavour. Favourite artists are probably:
San Fermin
Flock of Dimes/Wye Oak
Of Monsters & Men
Maggie Rogers
Florence & the Machine
Paper Kites
Matthew and the Atlas
Halsey
This list obviously isn't exhaustive because I have the memory of a goldfish but those are the highlights that came to mind at least.
Sorry for the long list, but thank you for the question!! It was fun to put all these in one place.

Training update:
He's good on brushing and nail trims. I'm able to put toothpaste on a toothbrush and brush his front teeth; still working on back teeth. Can examine his ears. We're going to have our first bath this week and I'm assuming there will be Feelings.
He is progressing excellently with being shut in the dog run or behind a gate. Still zooms back and forth for a while but no longer vocalizing.
Does super well when crated inside while other dogs are loose downstairs. Does super well while crated upstairs in my room and Kermit and I are present. He's very calm in the crate.
Improving while crated and I'm downstairs. It takes him a few minutes before he starts yelling, and he does so with less intensity than a few weeks ago. I can almost get through a shower before he starts yelling. Having a fan as white noise really helps.
Still has a massive temper tantrum and flings poop everywhere when in the ex-pen while I'm at work. Sigh.
I've started tethering him by the dog bed during Chill Out Time in my room. He's doing super well chewing on a beef stick and is very appropriate when Kermit joins him. No RG on Kermit's end-- just very appropriate "this is mine" and Zaku backs off. I don't have to sit on top of them like I did with Bindi and Kermit.
Started doing offleash walks. He's doing amazingly well (I'm super pleased), but boy will we need to work on focus around distractions. This will get so much easier when I can take him on leashed walks around town. It's hard to work on engagement in the yard when we've already been doing engagement in the yard for a month.
I've had Existential Crises 12423525 through 1243533 this week.
Still a boss at the toy switching game. We work on it basically every day.
Been doing some restrained recalls and "look over there!" recalls. Very responsive. Ineed to train the emergency recall, just haven't thought of a word yet.
I'm going to put extra effort into doing recalls around the greyhound puppies for the foreseeable future. It will be imperative when we start taking him on offleash walks with them. (They think it is fun to run, and he thinks it is fun to chase them down and grab them. This is Not Allowed.) Today I used the more pushy greyhound puppy as a distraction and recalled Zaku while puppy was standing right next to us, and also while puppy was playfully biting at Zaku. I had Zaku on a leash to facilitate recall, but he turned around and zoomed over to me each time. Very happy with that. Also practiced recalls while the puppies were zooming on the other side of the fence, and again Zaku returned immediately. This is a really exciting situation for him, so I'm very happy with the improvement. We'll slowly work up to having them zoom on the same side of the gate as us. Once he's able to manage that, he'll be ready for walks with the greyhounds. I also plan to proof with the ecollar when he's older, for safety.
Also played tug games in the presence of the pushy puppy, and Zaku was very happy to play with me. I'm quite pleased with this, and will work to maintain it.
An agility classmate has now scolded me two weeks in a row for Zaku not knowing "sit" yet. I'm tempted to put it off longer to spite her, but I do actually need a stationary command now. I want to teach a proper tuck-sit, since I've never done it before.
Introduced the concept of loose leash walking. Going to take this slow; he can walk in harness at all other times. He pulls like a motherfucker, so I'm sure he'll enjoy joring.
He enjoyed confo class and was delighted to meet the trainer, which was the exact opposite reaction from Kermit. XD

RG White Day: Too Many Pies
I know it’s late @chaikachi but I hope you like it enough to reblog
The kitchen smelled delicious, but having every level surface of his Aunt’s kitchen covered by rows of pies wasn’t something Oscar was expecting to be greeted by.
His first thought had been ‘where did all these pies come from?’
A sentiment that was soon answered when a spotted a familiar figure taking the latest pie out of the oven. When she turned to face him, he spotted a dusting of flower covering her apron, the pink one his aunt had given her for her birthday with the words ‘sweetest thing in the kitchen’ on it. Her normally windswept hair looked messier than usual as her eyes finally landed on him.
“Oscar?” she said.
“Ruby? What are you doing?”
Ruby sat the pie down and ran over to the flour covered table where a stack of pie tins and a mountain of dough waited.
“Sorry for destroying your kitchen,” she said, taking a tin and beginning to fiddle with a piece of the dough pile, “but nobody told me it was going to be Pie day today and I haven’t done anything about it and my sister—”
“Wait,” Oscar said, “what do you mean ‘pie day?”
Ruby pointed to the calendar on his kitchen wall. On the square marked with today’s date, the words “Pi Day” were written in red italicized font.
“Uh, Ruby,” Oscar said, “what exactly do you think pi day is?”
Ruby stopped halfway through trying to get her pie crust to lay flat in it’s tin and looked up at Oscar.
“A celebration of pie,” she said, her tone unsure, “and pie-like… things?”
Oscar blinked, processing what she had just said.
“I think we might need to have a talk about this,” he said, “but first… let me help you clean up.”

Asteroid City: Bleak play-within-a-play-within-a-play, with one teensy gay kiss and a lot of Ionesco
Movie night was Asteroid City (2023), which I thought would be about atomic testing in Nevada in the 1950s.  Instead, I was watching the Theater of the Absurd.  Maybe Ionesco, where your mother turns into a giraffe and offers you brownies,  or a Monte Python episode where one sketch bleeds into another, so Vikings are suddenly talking to the Minister of Finance about the hippodrome tariff.
As far as I can tell, there are two plays with plays.
1. In an old-fashioned black and white tv studio, a narrator tells us that what we are witnessing is a story, not real. The curtain opens to reveal:
Tumblr media
2. The Playwright (Edward Norton) auditioning an actor for the lead in his play (Jason Schwartzman), who brings him ice cream, changes into a different costume, and delivers a nonsequiter monologue.
They kiss..  But don't get excited: it's in the distance, and never referenced again, while there are three or four heterosexual romances coming up. We cut to the main story:
A lot of people arrive for the Junior Stargazers' Convention in Asteroid City, Nevada , where an asteroid crashed to Earth (they mean a meteor).  During the opening speeches, an alien descends from a spaceship and grabs the asteroid.  Everyone is put under quarantine, while the government tries to convince them that nothing happened.  After a week, the government is about to lift the quarantine, but the alien returns and gives the asteroid back.  The quarantine is on, but everyone riots, and the next day they are gone.  Maybe it was all a dream.
Tumblr media
While all this is going on, there are several soap opera stories.  Steinbeck (Jason Schwartzman again, I think) arrives with his son and three young daughters.  He was going to leave the son and go on to his wealthy father-in-law's house to bury his wife's ashes, but his car broke down.  During the quarantine his three daughters, who are witches, bury the ashes in the desert and perform a spell to resurrect her.  She isn't actually resurrected, but she apparently appears in a flashback or flash-sideways scene.
I figured that Steinbeck must be the famous novelist and nude model, who was active in Hollywood at the time, so I went scurrying to wikipedia for his biography.  It doesn't match.
Steinbeck falls in love with the famous actress in cabin next door.  Mostly they gaze at each other morosely for interminable minutes and say nonsequiters, but -- grossness alert -- she takes off all her clothes, top and bottom  both.
Meanwhile his son  Woodrow (Jake Ryan), a 40-year old playing 14, falls in love with her daughter.
And someone, I don't know who, buys a parcel of land out of a vending machine.
And a Dad and son have to live in a tent, because their cabin burned down.
Eventually the story spills out into the playwright's world (where we find out that he died in an auto accident), and then to the studio. Along the way there are several nonsequiter scenes that don't fit anywhere.
1. An actress on a train receives a note apologizing and saying they work well together.  Woodrow, the boy delivering the note, spends the night with her.
2. A woman tells a guy who lives on sound stages that she wants a divorce; they kiss.
3. A man says he needs some air ("You won't get it -- it's all soundstages") goes out onto the balcony of a soundstage street, where he interacts with the woman on the balcony of the sound stage next door. They stare at each other morosely and say nonsequiters.
4. A lot of people in various situations tell us: "You can't wake up if you don't fall asleep," over and over until it becomes painful.
Maybe our takeaway is that life is meaningless, so art should be, too.
The full review, with more non sequiters and a lot of nude photos, is on RG Beefcake and Boyfriends

hello, im sorry if im sounding stupid asking this. I saw gour previous asks and it reminded me of the Howard Stern interview. I was watching the interview of harry with howard stern and at one point howard asked if harry ever wanted marriage/devotion to a person and he says yes but also says that relationships are different these days and how people are open and have different things. im asking this out of pure curiosity, truly, but do you think he means to imply that his relationship is open? sorry again and if this has already been discussed.
https://youtu.be/Rg-Y1LSsJNk?si=wiPPZI6m7fEnJJ75
It's at 52.40.
Hi, anon!
Interview link. It's not a stupid question. I do get asked if H and L are in an open relationship, if they are poly or if they've had threesomes pretty often though.
I don't believe they're in an open relationship. We can't be sure of what H meant, but i think he was sort of questioning if Howard was thinking that marriage is the ultimate proof of a successful relationship and a fulfilled life. It was a bit old fashioned, heteronormative, perhaps also a conservative take on things.
I think H was saying that a successful and fulfilled life doesn’t equal a happy marriage, 2.4 kids and a white picket fence for everyone. Some are open to other ways of life that can be just as fulfilling and that marriage isn't for everyone. Harry wants to do what he wants to do without feeling the pressure to conform to society expectations and standards. He's also gay, and gay marriage wasn't even allowed in the UK when he got together with L. Remember also that both H and L are children of divorce. H's parents are divorced, his mom twice divorced and three times married. He did say he wants to get married (eventually), but to me it sounded like it's not something that's a life goal for him, or something that's a priority for him.

AvA/AvM Characters
The Characters Belong to Alan Becker. Under here is a mix of Canon, Headcanon, AU, and Fanon. This will be edited from time to time, so beware of changes! Some characters are technically my OCs: Amaryllis, Maroon, Ivory, Cali, and Coco. I give anyone permission to use these four characters as their own if they want to.
COLOR GANG:
(All of the Color Gang uses Becker as a last name) CG = Color Gang. The fighting stickfigures have the same creator, and the four are (somewhat) adopted by Alan. All five see Alan as their guardian or creator, and sometimes "Papa." They love to fight as a sport and hobby. Btw RG = Rainbow Gang, which includes Purple.
The Second Coming: (Genderfluid - They/He - 14) Would rather be called Orange to fit in with the CG. They are seen as the older brother despite being the youngest. They have Type 2 Narcolepsy. [Real Creationday: Oct 2]
Green: (Male - He/She - 15) Can sometimes have a big ego and would also try to act cool. He can be aggressive sometimes. He is a weeb (as in Anime Fan). He is the oldest of the CG. [Fake Creationday: January 12]
Red: (Male - He - 14) He is a silly goofy goober. Red is energetic, extroverted, reckless, kindhearted, and can get carried away easily. He is small but strong. He goes to the Willcraft Monster School and is still friends with what used to be Yellow Team. Hates being called a baby or cute. He's the second youngest. His fangs come from the first Herobrine possession and the white eye came from the second (both characteristics are not my ideas). [Fake Creationday: July 16]
Yellow: (Male - They - 15) They are nicknamed "Yelly" by Blue. They are calm most of the time. They are very curious to the point where it is extremely dangerous. They are "twins" with Blue (created on the same day). [Real (?) Creationday: March 30]
Blue: (Male - He/They/She - 15) They are nicknamed "Bluey" by Yellow (No, not like the Australian dog). They're pretty chill most of the time. They are peaceful most of the time, hesitates to fight, and usually surrenders if fighting can be avoided. Unless they are fighting for fun. [Fake Creationday: March 30]
Other Characters (NOT Color Gang):
"Purple" Mardi Gras King: (Female - She/They - 15) Mardi Gras (the color - Got from inserting #861481 into color-name.com) is her real name, but she is called Purple by the Color Gang. [Fake Birthday: March 19]
Mango Tango King: (Male - He - 46) MT/MTK is the acronym for Mango Tango (or +King at the end). Is called "King" by RG + Alan, but "Mango" by others. Used to be called "King Orange" or "Orange King," but now avoids confusion with Orange/Second. [Fake Birthday: August 19]
"Gold" Marigold King: (Female - He/She - 12+/14) He is dead and prefers being called "Gold" over "Marigold." His soul is somewhat attached to Minecraft ever since the incident, technically making him only half-dead. In fact, he was the one who drew the chalk animations when his dad (MT) got sucked into the white void. [Fake Birthday: April 5]
Fluorescent Yellow King: (Female - She - 28+/43) She died when her son, Gold, was born. She was ghost friends with Sakura (Purple's Mom) and sometimes watches over MT. She is trying to find Gold, but she doesn’t know where he went ever since the “incident” happened. [Fake Birthday: June 8]
Cobalt: (Male - He - 38) He came from sticksfight.com (which is why he has no last name... Well, his last name used to be Orchid before the divorce). He was not an abuser, but rather wanted to train Purple. [Fake Creationday: May 1]
Sakura Pink Orchid: (Female - She - 32+/39) Sakura watches over her daughter. [Fake Birthday: February 22] Sister = Amaryllis Stripes Orchid. Mom = Ivory White Orchid. Dad = Maroon Red Orchid.
The Chosen One: (Female - He - 22) He is extremely introverted. He is not always serious and has a silly side to him (as seen in the episode "Wanted"). Doesn't know how to behave in society and is not exactly what you would think of a stick called "The Chosen One." [Real Creationday: November 4]
The Dark Lord: (Male - She - 18) She is extremely destructive and violent, but she has a heart. She is very extroverted. I cannot decide if I want to keep her dead or not. [Real Creationday: October 4]
Victim Victor: (Agender - They/Xe - 22) Hates being called "Victim" because of trauma. Is nicknamed “Vicky/Vic.” [Real Creationday: June 3 - Same with the clones]
Mercenaries: Striker Smith (Male - He), Ballista (aka Pixel/Pix) (Demiboy - He/They), Sign (Male - He/They), Paleo (Female - She/They/He/It)
Brandy Fry (Corn dog Guy): (Male - He/They - 30ish) He works at a corndog stand. He has a wife named Cali Gold and a child named Coconut (nicknamed Coco).
Reuben: It is the PIG! It gets a separate info thing because it deserves it and you can't change my mind. Reuben is Red's Pig. It is married with another pig and has a piglet. The other two pigs' names are unknown until I decide someday. For now, they are just pigs. (Random Fun Fact: All Minecraft animal mobs are females! Or at least the same gender.)
Chosen, Victor, and Dark extra info: They do not use Becker as a last name and do not consider Alan as their dad of any type or sort of way.
Birthdays in Order (Mostly So I can Keep Track Easily):
Green, Sakura, Purple, Yellow + Blue, Gold, Cobalt, Victor, Fluorescence, Red, MT, Jade (my OC), Second, Dark, Chosen,
Oh and I'm last

Thoughts While Watching Gilmore Girls: S1/Ep19 ("Emily In Wonderland")
What happens in this episode: Emily comes to visit The Hollow and leaves upset over what she learns. Rachel unearths the ruins of the old Dragonfly Inn while working on a boring photography project about Small Town America that nobody really cares about. Rory's peculiar food habits continune to be revealed. Lorelai asks to borrow Luke's thingy/admires his pickle. Lorelai's desire to see Luke & Rachel break up is more transparent than a sheet of cellophane. There are only two episodes left in Season 1 after this.
Emily: There are no baby pictures of Lorelai (because when Lorelai was 7 she burned them). Rory says I bet Mom was a cute baby and Emily agrees. What the hell was this then:
Tumblr media
They spent a good few minutes in that episode (6 or 7 I think?) looking through Lorelai's baby photo albums. I commented that this didn't look like a photograph taken in the late 60's. The Gilmores just ordered pancakes and bacon and there were no lectures from Luke about the evils of red meat so I guess they've dropped that trait of his. Rachel: Lorelai has amazing eyes. Don't you think? Luke: Yeah. They're...placed good. Symmetrical. Rory's pager goes off: RG: I'm buzzing. LG: What did I say about buzzing in public? Dirty joke #1.
Tumblr media
I am hysterical over Rory eating a slice of french toast on the run. Who does that? I could even see a waffle, maybe, but French toast? And you mean to tell me there was no syrup or butter on it either? She eats plain French toast? It's no "taking a can of Parmesan cheese into her room" from the previous episode or "eating two plain slices of white bread for lunch" (from a future episode), I admit, but still, that girl is very peculiar. Rory mentions again that she works at the Independence Inn several days a week and on special occasions. Ugh, stop lying, French Toast Girl.
Tumblr media
The former Gilmore Abode (the infamous potting shed). Emily is just finding out that this is where Rory used to live as a child and she reacts, very upset over what she's learned. I initially thought that perhaps this was a sign of her feeling guilty, that she could let Lorelai and Rory slip away from her and end up living in such a place, but later she turns it around to accuse Lorelai of letting it happen. Rachel gives Lorelai a tour of Luke's apartment, and I think this is the first time we see the inside of it. LG: "I haven't been picturing the inside of Luke's apartment...at all." Nope you totally haven't been picturing what his bed looks like and what you want to do in it. Rachel to Lorelai: I cannot find your pictures here (in Luke's apartment). Maybe they're in his bathroom. Lorelai: I don't know want to know why. Dirty Joke #2! And what a filthy one it was! I love when they slip them in! #ThatsWhatSheSaid Emily's reacts to the discovery about the shed by trying to make it up to Rory (and to try and make Lorelai feel bad). So she sets up her vision of a teenage girl's dream bedroom. A flowery pink bedroom with stuffed animals, Hello Kitty, and boyband posters, even though Rory would rather walk over hot coals than ever listen to pop music.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Someone who is not a Millennial such as myself could never understand the utter joy this exchange brings me. Backside Boys 4ever, by the way. Rory chooses N'Sync, because of course French Toast Girl would pick them over the Backside Boys. (I love all three groups).
Tumblr media
Tomatos Sign: Spotted. Season 1, Episode 19: Luke Danes asks Lorelai Gilmore: "Do you want some coffee?" That's the stupidest question I've ever heard since Jack Pearson asked Rebecca Pearson "Am I cute enough to get lucky?" Another first: The first time we see the stock room. Some of the contents of the stock room? Potatoes, oranges, A1 sauce, Spam, Pop Tarts, chilli, apple sauce, gravy, rice, tomato sauce, and a fuckton of mustard and pickles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think she wants your pickle Luke.
Tumblr media
Notice the giant box of Pop Tarts on the left. Have you ever heard of a restaurant serving Pop Tarts? Well, this is The Hollow, where people eat slices of French Toast as snacks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the people would wait impatiently for the day Lorelai finally borrowed Luke's thingy.
Tumblr media
If Taylor wasn't embezzling funds for bridge repair festivals maybe he could fund the construction of a proper movie theater.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Boyband posters in frames. Oh you fancy Emily. Mere mortals of the day like me just scotch taped those fuckers to the wall and hoped they wouldn't fall down in the middle of the night and scare the piss out of us. Lorelai: Do you see the NSync poster? It's a poster of Justin, not Nsync. I'm legally obligated to point that out. JC Chasez was way more talented btw. Things Lorelai observes in the room: Hello Kitty notepads, Cosmo Girl magazine, boyband posters, sunflowers. With each item she names, the resentment in her voice grows. LG: "Well, at least you didn't buy her a car." I couldn't decide if I wanted to make a "you built me a car?" joke or comment on how the Gilmores do buy her a car a few years later. I presumed was Emily was feeling some sort of guilt or shame (and trying to alleivate the guilt by making a cozy home away from home for Rory), was sort of incorrect. Instead she turns on Lorelai, angry at her that she would ever allow her grandaughter to live in a shed, and that Lorelai would choose to live in a shed than with her mother. The episode ends with Sookie and Lorelai visiting The Dragonfly, where Sookie has a panic attack over the thought of opening an Inn. The Good: The Nostaliga! Oh, the Nostalgia! Lots of dirty jokes! Rory's bizarre eating habits continue to amuse me. The meeting of Emily and Mrs. Kim was entertaining. No Dean. Not even a mention of Dean. Hooray! The New: The first plot seed is sown for Lorelai & Sookie's eventual purchase of the Dragonfly Inn. The first time we see the potting shed. The first time we see the inside of Luke's apartment and his stock room. The confusing: Emily says there are no baby pictures of Lorelai left, but according to episode 6, there's at least one. Rory says she has a job and that is not true. The Bad: Nothing at all. Tomatos Sign: Yes How Many Episodes Until Jess Shows Up: 7
