I think Lovely Complex did a great job humanizing and displaying the emotions of a teenage girl. Even to the point of her hair always being differently styled and her clothes being diverse, just like a real teenager.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They humanize her to the point of letting her be unattractive and make ugly faces in front of her love interest. Letting her be silly. Not hyper-sexualizing her. Having her friends be supportive people. Letting her cry. Letting her yell and get mad.
She doesn’t always have to be perfect and beautiful and emotionless like so many romance (yes even the other romcom ones) animes portray teenagers.
LoveCom is just… so good for so many reasons, but Risa is the top one.

Skip and Loafer Episode 8: Hot and Complications
Tumblr media
Well, another Skip and Loafer episode, another day of talking about a hell of a lot of stuff. A cute zoo trip plus a dramatic glimpse into the past that overlaps with a sleepover for the girls? There's certainly lots going on, and the episode takes advantage of that to fill it to the brim with information.
The thing freshest on my mind is probably the most surprising piece: Nao-chan and Mika. An unlikely duo for sure, but I love how it's approached. They both share similar experiences in regards to isolation and putting forth intense effort to fit in and be accepted, but were/are limited by themselves and because of that end up isolated and alone. It's a really really outstanding piece that the pair share, and I love how Nao-chan's able to look back on their experiences growing up, and despite how different they are to Mika's, sympathize with her and give her the words and confidence that she needs in those key moments. This clip of the pair of them summarizes it really well.
Anyways, back to Mika for some more. You really get a good idea of just how observant and knowledgeable she is as a character through episodes like this. She thinks about almost everything possible and finds the perfect way to act and respond, and she internalizes a great deal of what other people say. Case and point was her inner thoughts after hearing Murashige's story about middle school. The first thing to pop into her mind was why Murashige's experience was like that, and she uses that to belittle herself.
Tumblr media
It's just such a great piece. She's having a sleepover with her friends, who invited her, and all she's able to feel is isolation and guilt in regards to her self. And it works in perfect opposition to the outspoken Mika. There's two facets to her personality, and they remain at odds with each other. She might think little of herself, but she's also the kind of girl that will stake out her friends trip to the zoo with a guy. Now sure, there might be a little in there because she's in love with Shima and wants to take over Mitsumi's role, but that doesn't get in the way of her supporting her friend, and I think that's a great example of just how disparate Mika's image of herself is to who she really is, and does wonders to continue using Mika as a vehicle for showing viewers how damaging and heavy the weight is of expectations that are placed on young girls in society.
Tumblr media
If viewers thought Egashira was abrasive when we were first introduced to them, Ririka really is on another level. Her character does great at getting people to hate them right away, but there is more to it than that. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's "good" pieces that lurk, but there's certainly more than meets the eye.
The very first thing you pick up on is that Ririka and Shima have a set amount of space between them. No matter what, while they're walking Ririka is always comfortably ahead of Shima, and the episode tries really hard to make viewers cognizant of that space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, what's the point? Well, if the conversation didn't make it clear enough, Ririka and Shima aren't exactly getting on like a house on fire. There's a palpable distance and apathy between the pair that permeates their interactions. To put it into words, it's the gaps between their lives. Ririka has moved on and is back into show business, while Shima has given up that life. The pair are for all intents and purposes, completely apart from one another. But there's one little thing that makes it interesting, and that's when Ririka looks back at Shima.
Tumblr media
Sure, a simple smile or softer face isn't really anything crazy, but compare it with the scenes of her looking straight ahead. She's deadpan.
Tumblr media
So, she's only happy when looking at Shima, and only looking back at him for that matter. I think most can see where I'm going so I'll cut to the chase. She misses the old Shima, the one that stood side by side with her and held her hand. The Shima that she was friends with and spent time together with, the one that only warmed up to her.
Tumblr media
It makes for a really great character. She uses that controversy over being around alcohol as a younger kid to hold Shima on a leash, and she does it for herself, simply because she doesn't want to lose him. At the end of the day, it makes her a very terrible and shallow person, but as a character it's a great approach and provides a very easy way to get conflicting thoughts in regards to them. All they want is to be beside Shima again, but what they're doing is pushing him further and further away.
Now, there's a whole lot of other stuff in regards to this episode, but I'm going to try and fly through it as quick as possible now.
The direction: I still really love how well they integrate that first person perspective into stuff with Mitsumi and Shima. It really just adds something to their moments that I can't quite put my finger on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Something that I can put my finger on though is the layering of the scenes. It's really simple stuff to add another table in front of Mitsumi and Shima or to throw some CG characters in the distance for movement, but it adds so much to the viewer's understanding of the scale and scope of the world. Just a little piece that makes you think, "oh yeah, there's more to this than just Shima and Mitsumi".
Tumblr media
What you can also get from this image is that the sense of space and distance in a lot of cuts in the series is still there. There's plenty of static scenes that characters move through quite well, and it's really nice in adding to that sense of breadth that makes you think about what lies outside of the viewer's perception.
Tumblr media
Alright alright, the last piece I swear. I really loved how the episode showed off the girls having fun with their sleepover, and placed Shima's quiet and lonely night against it. It really does wonders to show how separated Shima is from a truly normal life, and how his friends (namely Mitsumi) and Tsubame West are his bridge towards having experiences like that. Just a really great and simple piece that's really cute while still managing to tell something of importance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah, Skip and Loafer continues to knock it out of the park with hit after hit. Incredible work all around to deliver something of this quality. Coming this far, I was really expecting to be betrayed by my own words from early on, but Skip and Loafer really is positioned to become an instant classic Slice of Life/RomCom.

Just watched Ep1 of Astro Note.
What a wild show. It’s got pretty but also wacky animation. Especially when they show reaction shots 🤣🤣
All the character personalities feel wild and exaggerated which is super fun. This show will thrive off of the interactions.
Is this like a much more wholesome Uresei Yatsura??? A wacky alien romcom????
I’m soooooo down

WYSW: Love is War
*why you should watch*
*spoiler free!*
Tumblr media
I actually already made a Love is War recommendation post ages ago, but now, 3 seasons and many manga chapters in, I have more to say about it and even more praises to shower upon it. And some convincing to do, if you haven’t watched the show yet. If you like comedy anime, romance anime, or romcom anime, and you haven’t seen Love is War yet, what are you waiting for?
If you don’t know the plot, Kaguya-sama: Love is War focuses on the student council of an exclusive high school for the children of Japan’s elite. The president, Miyuki Shirogane, and the vice president, Kaguya Shinomiya, secretly have a crush on each other but refuse to let the other person know. Instead, they’re determined to make the other confess to them first.
Tumblr media
I’m not the first to say it, but Love is War genuinely has Death Note level mind games. The lengths these two go to in order to get in each other’s heads is truly impressive and frightening. But, there actually is a developing heartfelt story underneath all of the silliness, and despite their resistance and stubbornness you will be rooting so hard for Kaguya and Shirogane to get together.
The show has a wide variety of beloved characters, from the other members of the student council to Shirogane and Kaguya’s quirky families. Everyone is very likable and funny, with their own personal struggles that get explored as the story gets more complex.
Love is War has a lot to say about relationships, crushes, insecurity, classism, growing up, and even more, and does it all while being one of the funniest anime I’ve ever seen. If you’re looking for a lighthearted romcom with a bit of depth to it, Love is War is the show for you.
Thanks for reading!

Explaining Anime Badly✨ pt 6
Tumblr media
Tomo-chan is a Girl is what I think it would look like if Ranma Saotome and Ranko were mutually independent people who were trying to fall in love. Which, on second thought, is just Ranma and Akane Tendo normally if she were a redhead and Ranma had responsible parents. This will absolutely appear on a recommendation list coming to a blog near you soon but I cackled when I thought about that comparison. There’s, lowkey, even a Nabiki Tendo and I adore it.

Man toradora really just kinda dropped the platonic ideal of what a proper small-scale Shounen battle anime fight should be in the middle of a slice of life romcom and moved on, huh

Skip and Loafer Episode 7: Hectic and Hot Stuff
Tumblr media
It's been a long time since I've watched a high school SoL/RomCom that's able to pin down the nature of high school students so well. It just gets how they approach things, how they change and develop, how they remain rigid in their ways. All the awkwardness and oddity that comes from the friendships and interactions, it just gets it all and distills it into something incredibly enjoyable and relatable, like this episode.
So, there's two things that really stood out with this episode: friend groups and first person perspective. The two don't really have anything to do with one another, but they feel like the most apparent pieces through today's content, so I'll get the ball rolling with the formal.
With how animanga present these types of stories, it's incredibly easy to forget that a world of people exist outside of the scope of what we as viewers are shown explicitly. It leads to very narrow thinking, and an overall narrow and almost distant world. Thankfully, Skip and Loafer avoids that entirely with how it approaches it.
We get to see things like students from other schools confessing to Shima-kun, for example. Something as easy as a different uniform being shown really adds a lot to how we as viewers piece together the story, and understand the scale and scope of the lives of the characters that inhabit it.
Tumblr media
And then there's pieces like Takamine's journal/diary, which shows off names for characters that we've not seen. Once more, such a simple idea, but incredibly effective at increasing the scope of the content and providing a richer background to characters. All with just a pair of names.
Tumblr media
And then there's pieces that take place within the school to show that social breadth (or even sometimes, the social gap). Things like Yamada goofing off with a different pair of people while Shima-kun's out in the courtyard and Mukai's in the background being busy. Such an easy way to show the fluidity of friend groups and social cliques within the story, and that what we as viewers see as the friend group isn't the end all be all of the web of connections that the characters maintain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or even the awkwardness of becoming part of a friend group like Egashira experiences. Physically, she's left out as she's behind Mitsumi, while Murashige and Kurume chat with her, so it isn't until Mitsumi turns around to bring Egashira into it that she's really a part of it. Which you might think is funny, because wasn't it just the other day that Egashira was already part of the group? Well, it's rather implicit, but in its own way it's showing that it's not as easy as being in the group once to really be a part of it. Thankfully, Mitsumi's heart is made of gold and Egashira is brought into the fold before she even knows it.
Tumblr media
And now, a bit of an interlude on direction. I say first person, but it's not quite the same as that earlier episode's approach to it. We're not looking strictly from the perspective of a given character per se, but almost borrowing their eyes to view the scene. It's a hard thing to explain, but where we view the scene is different from how.
Take this example of Shima-kun and Mitsumi talking. We're given the same high angle that Shima would have in talking to Mitsumi, but from a different position in the scene.
Tumblr media
And we see a lot of it throughout this episode. Personally, I'm all for it and they use it in all the right places, like borrowing Mitsumi's eyes for an over the shoulder look at Takamine senpai. Or looking directly across to Egashira during a conversation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's just a really great piece that works in junction with the focus on character closeups through the episode, which you might think would be at odds with each other, but they form a nice pairing where the gazes of characters is treated with the most importance in the episode. Especially in regards to Mitsumi.
Tumblr media
And it's not like they use these closeups to be lazy or stiff with the animation. The character acting remains expressive and on point, making the closeups actually worth it from a story perspective.
Now, last but not least, the actual content of the episode. I really loved Takamine's story, and how they're approached as a high school student. Of course, there's kids out there that don't really care any about high school, but there's just as many that do, so Takamine's really suffering from having to deal with the latter on something she's so passionate about.
It's a really great piece to pursue, and I love how much of Takamine's character still exists after that bus ride with Mitsumi. They've certainly changed as a character, but their core is still preserved. They're still Takamine, who plans every waking minute of their day. But, they're slightly different. They're more positive and personable, they're more open to consolation from others, and more willing to make what's in front of them work. Personally speaking, it's such an important thing to pin down, as high school students won't change at the drop of a hat, but they also aren't perfectly rigid and static people in life.
Anyways, that malleability of Takamine's character, and subsequently the others within this story, is a core piece as to why her part is so good in this episode. Because of that flexibility, she's able to meet Kanechika halfway, after he accidentally rubbed salt in Takamine's wounds. There's not some big conversation, or crazy ideal presented by Kanechika to make her feel better, but rather he shares his embarrassment through a movie he made when he was younger, and his struggles to improve with her. It's all for Kanechika to sort of to say, "see? I've had issues as well". It's really endearing, and carries the perfect amount of awkwardness and beating around the bush that a high school student would have.
Tumblr media
Also, similarly to Takamine's strong core but flexible exterior, Egashira sees similar treatment. She still remains somewhat distance and cold to Mitsumi, and is even still seen being jealous in regards to her closeness with Shima-kun. But that doesn't stop her from being a friend to Mitsumi, to going out of her way to give her hints and information that she wouldn't have otherwise. With Takamine having a similar approach to her character, it's a really great thing to see that gets how people work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we finally now reach the end, with the whole whirlwind of stuff going on. Mitsumi and Shima-kun going to the zoo together, a rival appearing, and the muddy and confusing emotions that Mitsumi has for Shima-kun. It's all very well done, and I love how warm and pure Mitsumi is about being friends with Shima-kun. She certainly does doubt herself, but at the same time is incredibly happy to have him by her side. Though, that in part is what causes the drama of the "new girl" to arise, and for Egashira to take action.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Skip and Loafer can't miss, simple as it gets. Everything feels like it hits the nail on the head with just the right amount of drama and realism. All the characters are fun and involved, and feel like they exist outside of what we see, and their interactions are really well thought out and expressed. Always a treat to watch, and always sucks to remember that we're in a countdown to the final episode of the season.
