Top Ten Shows I saw in 2022
Spoilers!
10. Fūrin Kazan (2007) - 6/10
I won't lie, I just need something for the tenth spot.
Don't get me wrong, there are multiple moments that I liked, but I still didn’t feel like I wanted to put this up here. Oh well.
Tumblr media
9. Blue Period (Season 1) - 6/10
This reminded me that I once liked doing art.
Tumblr media
8. Ossan's Love - 6/10
This is only this high because I LOVE the last episode.
This show has some awkward moments, and I hate awkward moments. They kill me.
Tumblr media
7. Hideyoshi (1996) - 7/10
From episode 30 something to 41, it is so boring. Only 42 onward brings this up to 7/10, and so this is in seventh place. Last episodes are fucking great, I cried, but there is a huge lull to get there.
Tumblr media
6.Kabe-Koji-Nekoyashiki-kun Desires to be Recognized - 7/10
I love BLs, especially japanese ones, and I continually looked forward to the next episode.
I think I almost cried when the buff guy gave his, "So you've written something you're satisfied with?," speech.
Tumblr media
5. House of the Dragon (Season 1) - 7/10
This was what GoT fans needed. HBO coughed up the money and got the right people to make something great, and I hope it continues to be just as good.
Corlys Velaryon is fucking great. Coming in with some of the best lines.
"What is this brief, mortal life, if not the pursuit of legacy."
and
"History does not remember blood. It remembers names."
Tumblr media
4. Minato's Laundromat - 7/10
This is a bit of a "holy shit" concept for a show, but I loved it, even if somethings were a bit *raised eyebrows.
Tumblr media
3. Alice in Borderland (Season 2) - 8/10
I didn’t care for the second part of episode 4, I believe, but the last two episodes...
Chef's kiss.
Fucking great.
Tumblr media
2. Chainsaw Man (Season 1) - 8/10
Despite not being finished, this deserves it.
For whatever reason, in the opening, when we see the Future Devil dancing, it deeply unsettles/horrifies me, idk.
Tumblr media
1. Sanada Maru - 8/10
Despite there being moments of me being "that should not happen," I loved Sanada Maru. My top spot for both "shows I've seen this year" and "Taiga dramas I've seen."
Some of the humor didn't land for me, but I still enjoyed it.
Tumblr media
Honorable Mentions:
Cherry Magic - 6/10
Moon Knight - 6/10
Our Flag Means Death - 6/10
The Boys (Season 3) - 6/10
A Man Who Defies the World of BL (Season 2) - 7/10
The Umbrella Academy (Season 3) - 7/10

Hi...Can I ask, what are your KilluGon fav moments? And what are your fav personal headcanons about them? Also, do you have any fav ships (from any fandom) that the dynamics remind you of KilluGon? Thanks if you want to answer....
Hello!
Thank you for asking! This post will get way too long if I answer all your questions, so here's a post where I talk about some of my fav HxH moments (4/5 of which are KilluGon related), and here's my Headcanons tag to see some of the headcanons I've posted or approved of previously. I'm sure I'll revisit similar questions to these over time as well.
I haven't had anyone ask about ships that remind me of KilluGon though, and it's a fun question to answer! I think KilluGon is very unique, so these might not be incredibly similar, but I'm focusing on ships that give me a similar feeling or have commonalities that I think are worth mentioning. I enjoy all of these ships to varying degrees!
I'm going to stay away from ships from big, currently popular shounen series that people typically bring up in comparison with HxH (JJK, HeroAca, etc.), both because the ships I've come across in those don't actually remind me of KilluGon very deeply, and also because it's more fun to recommend ships/series people may not have heard of already!
Tumblr media
Reki Kyan and Langa Hasegawa (Sk8 the Infinity)
I'm all but certain these two were based off Gon and Killua in part--the personalities of the two and dynamic between them feels fairly similar, and the antagonist of the series, Adam, also strongly feels like he's based off of Hisoka. The series itself is less serious/dark than HxH so the intensity isn't the same, but they definitely have a similar strong friendship basis and mutual adoration to Gon and Killua.
Tumblr media
Suletta Mercury and Miorine Rembran (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury)
Suletta is straightforward, somewhat oblivious, and grew up isolated from others (a bit like Gon), and Miorine is confident, tsundere, and trying to escape the influence of her rich and powerful family (a bit like Killua), and the two hit it off quickly and find joy and inspiration to keep going in each other. The degree to which they influence, support, and adore each other feels familiar. There are some later developments (spoilers) that remind me of Gon and Killua as well.
Tumblr media
Yuki Sanada and Haru (Tsuritama)
Yuki, who has severe anxiety, ends up having his life transformed when the strange and overly friendly Haru appears suddenly. There's a real cuteness, joyfulness, and closeness between them that reminds me of Gon and Killua, and the way they help each other understand the world differently and change each others' perspectives as well.
Tumblr media
Maru and Kiruko (Tengoku Daimakyou / Heavenly Delusion)
I can't say too much about this ship because I don't want to spoil any surprises, but let's just say in at least one major way it's not how it appears. Maru (the blond one) shares several commonalities with Killua, though he's at least a bit more straightforward in his emotions like Gon; while Kiruko is somewhat more tsundere initially (due to understandable past reasons). Their bond reminds me of Gon and Killua in that they travel all around together and develop a very close friendship and devotion to one another, and while one is more openly affectionate the other holds back more initially.
(This series contains some mature content, including a depiction of sexual assault, so please be careful when checking it out, but it's fantastic!)
Tumblr media
Shindou Hikaru and Touya Akira (Hikaru no Go)
These two are rivals and obviously Gon and Killua are not, but at the same time there's a certain intensity and degree of being obsessed with each other than reminds me of KilluGon, as well as things like their bickering and the degree to which the series revolves around their connection. It's been a long time since I read the manga so I admittedly can't remember all the details, but I feel like it's maybe a few steps closer to Gon and Killua than, say, Hinata and Kageyama from Haikyuu (though that's also a great rivals -> friends ship that has some commonalities with KilluGon). It has a strong canon basis and I remember really enjoying how their bond develops!
Riko and Reg (Made in Abyss)
Tumblr media
Riko is an adventurous, plucky girl who goes on a dangerous journey to find her missing parent, while Reg the robot boy supports her on their adventure (and semi-secretly adores her). Reg is also voiced by Mariya Ise, Killua's seiyuu, so it's hard not make the comparison! The personalities of the two are definitely similar and their bond feels familiar.
(Made in Abyss looks cute but it contains a great deal of upsetting/potentially triggering content, please be careful if you decide to watch or read it! It's amazing, but definitely not a series that will appeal to everyone.)
I hope people looking for similar ships might enjoy checking these series out!

Yukimura Sanada was not only a skilled warrior but also had a notable love for cherry blossoms. He was said to have planted hundreds of cherry trees, contributing to the scenic beauty of Sanada-maru, a fortress he defended during the Siege of Osaka.

I think the 2nd half of Koei Games are the parts where they shine the best. As someone who played many Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors, the gameplay hasn't improved much unfortunately, but the story telling has been much improved. SW Sanada Maru (Spirit of Sanada) is a horrid boring game at the beginning, but somehow morphs into THE best depiction of Yukimura in a video game. It also played a huge role in Capcom axing SB because their competing game (Yukimura-Den) couldn't stand up in comparison.
It's been a hot minute since I last played a mainline Musou, the last ones having been Dynasty 8 Xtreme Legends and Samurai 4 Special. I do not recall much about the latter (save for the fact it was really fun to play), but 7 has remained stuck in my head as one of the Musou games with the best story presentation among the ones I have played. I think about the introductory cutscene to the Battle of Fancheng with Pang De dragging the wooden coffin a whole damn LOT. I'm really sad I couldn't figure out how to make the game work properly on my current laptop, shit's really badly optimized for newer computers bwhahah.
I really, really miss Sengoku Basara... I have fond memories of me bringing my laptop to my Italian literature classes in uni and getting so damn bored with the professor's lecture that I'd just fire up Dolphin and play SB3, to this day one of my favorite musou games ever. I hope Capcom'll take a chance one day and try to revive the franchise, what with the recent wave of revived/remastered IPs, but who knows what the future holds in store for us.
Anyway, it's really impressive how much Samurai Remnant's story picks the pace up around the second half of the third chapter. I found it pretty tame up until that point, especially because I couldn't help making comparisons with EXTRA's pacing, which I'm hugely nostalgic for, but after that? Damn, what a fantastic crescendo. My only remaining gripes at this point (narrative-wise, since I could spend hours going off over how much of a fucking slog battles are with every enemy being an immovable damage sponge and the absolute mess that are Master-Servant duo battles, or the fact YOU CAN LOCK YOURSELF OUT OF COMPLETING A SKILL TREE DUE TO THE ARBITRARY WAY ROGUE SERVANTS ARE TIED TO THEM) is that some of the Rogue Servants really got the short end of the narrative stick by being FGO-bait filler with little meat to them, whereas others got more going on for them than some of the main Servants (it sure was funny for Jalter to be featured prominently, only for her to turn out to be such a lobotomized version of her character, lacking basically any of the traits that endeared her to the fans, that she ends up being the most boring Jeanne ever, which is one hell of a feat to achieve). That aside, I'm excited to see what the route(s?) I haven't checked out have in store for me (I am currently about to finish the Rat route).

I thought peak is when Masao Kusakari skipped and yell "Papa, I told you to not walk like a man" to Kang Ji-Young.
Then, Kusakari snuggled on Kenichi while sit on his lap scene shown. That, that is the peak.
AS SOMEONE WHO HAD SEEN SANADA MARU, I REALLY NEED TO CLEAN AND UNSEEN THAT SCENE.

Fun Trivia : Lady Ochiba is inspired by Lady Chacha.
Fumi Nikaido as Ochiba in Shogun (2024), mother of Yaemori & Takeuchi Yuko as Chacha in Sanada Maru (2016), mother of Hideyori.
Consort to the Taiko.
Both actress did well in depicting the protective mother that wants to protect the best interest of her son, not wanting him to be influenced or corrupted by others into making his decisions, and portraying the strongheaded noblewoman who speaks her mind to her Lords.

Top Shows I Watched in 2023 (not of)
SPOILERS!
7. Loki (Season 2) - 6.5/10
Tumblr media
I don't have much to say about Loki other than I loved the final episode, Natalie Holt deserves some kind of award for her music and it makes me cry.
6. One Piece (Live Action) - 6.5/10
Tumblr media
As everyone has already said, this should not have worked. I didn't have much faith in it, but I chose to watch it anyway. And I'm glad I did.
Though there were moments of stiff acting and/or line delivery, I still like it overall.
Though I still liked Roger's anime death more than here.
5. My Beautiful Man/Utsukushii kare (Season 2) - 7/10
Tumblr media
I don't remember much considering I watched this months ago. But I do recall wanting and waiting for this for a WHILE. I was not disappointed and Utsukushii Kare stands as my favorite BL series. Minato's Laundromat would've been on the list, but it failed me, Utsukushii Kare hasn't. So yeah.
4. Jack O' Frost (2023) - 6/10
Tumblr media
I have issues with the whole "an MC has amnesia" plot and considering this has happened 3 times in the same year is crazy to me.
But do recall I Fucking LOVE the music! OOOOHHHH, Shit! I love it. As soon as "Winter Days" started playing during episode 2 or 3, I immediately started looking for the soundtrack.
I also have yet another celebrity crush in Kyoya Honda.
3. Taira no Kiyomori - 8/10
Tumblr media
This is unfair given the fact I started this last year and left for a month, making me finish this in January or February. But I still finished in 2023, so it counts!
As per my previous review, I was fucking bored with the first 6 to 9 episodes. After them, however, I loved this show. I love the music, I love the characters, and I like some of the comedy. There are so many great moments that I absolutely love.
Despite knowing how it ended, historically, I was still upset at the characters' deaths.
2. More Than Words (2022) - 6/10
Tumblr media
I heard this was a Japanese BL, my favorite type of BL, and I guess. But as others have said, it's mostly about the relationship between Makio and Mieko. Though perhaps not for the second part of the story...
Anyway, I loved this show. It fucked me up, but I did stay up all night till 12 or 1 am to finish it, and I couldn't stop thinking about it for a month. So yeah, despite the score, I am putting it up here.
1. Kamakura dono no 13 nin/13 Lords of the Shogun - 7/10
Tumblr media
HERE COMES THE MAIN MAN HIMSELF, KŌKI MITANI!
Tumblr media
The main man himself, the man who wrote my favorite Taiga Drama, SANADA MARU! No wonder I was fucking addicted to this show. For first time in A WHILE I watched and finished this entire show in a week.
I was drawn into this show by the fucking neck. I just was.
I remember seeing You Oizumi as Minamoto no Yoritomo and thinking, "Nah." I couldn't get behind him, I simply didn't see it at first. Then he died and literally episodes later, I was missing this man.
All my favorite characters died. ALL! And since I don't know much about the Heian nor Kamakura period, I was taken out. Fucking Kazusa, dead; Minamoto no Yoshinaka, I knew this was so it's my fault, but dead; fucking Wada Yoshimori, I fucking loved him, and I didn't know it! DEAD!
They killed my pathetic twink, Minamoto no Sanetomo. And he was gay! FUCK! I was heavily upset.
And the fact that it ends with Yoshitoko's death via his sister not giving him his medicine and watching him die! Gods dammmmmnnn!
Kōki Mitani you heavenly fucker! Ah!
I also love the music, one of my favorites Taiga drama themes.
Now, that wasn't all I watched, but simply all I felt should be on the list. I refuse to put ten shows up here if I don't care enough for them.
Here's to another year.
