B I O G R A P H Y

Anise Kim-Wagner was born in the port city of Kiel on Germany's Baltic Coast, where her paternal family had lived from time out of mind. Her father, Uwe Wagner, was a pharmacist with his own chemist's shop, which he inherited from his late father, who had inherited it from his father before him.

As a child, Anise was a skinny little thing with scraped knees and a boy's shaggy haircut; and she was not blighted by worry but was forever traipsing off to listen to her neighbor's war stories, scale trees, or discover something unique and strange on the Schilksee Strandbad shores.  

Anise's mother, Hye-ja Kim, was originally from a small folk village in the North Gyeongsang Province. She wanted Anise to familiarize herself with her Korean identity. Wagner supported this decision though he abided in Germany to tend the pharmacy. Anise and her mother moved to Kim's hometown of Anwon when Anise was eleven, where they lodged with her grandmother and four aunts. Several years passed, and Anise was a skinny little thing no longer. Now she was tall and elegant, her dark hair swished like the swell of the sea, and her brown eyes were deep and all-seeing.

She was a year shy of her sixteenth birthday when she incurred her first vision of the future: they would have a long, hard winter. Despite the inclement weather, the Kim matriarchs celebrated; Anise had come of age as a witch. Anise - she then learned - descended from a long line of witches on her mother's side who were quick to train her in spell casting, potion making, and herb foraging. At the same time, Anise uncovered her love for dance and became an accomplished ballerina, her graceful body carrying a multitude of emotions and magic. She was scouted to attend the prestigious Delphi Dance Academy in Seoul.

Anise prospered at the academy. She grew close to her roommate Ye-eun, a lithe snub-nosed dancer from the South, and the two forged a deep companionship. It was Ye-eun who comforted Anise when her prophetic visions came fast and gory like waking nightmares, leaving her with the taste and stench of death in her throat. 

Within her first two years at the academy, she incurred visions that this strange city would be her rebirth and her death, but Anise was not afraid. She would dance to her own dirge.
