Announcing: Restful Actions

(It's here. You can go get it now!)

Restful Actions is a collection of 10 minigames for downtime periods in any TTRPG. They're designed to help players resolve character conflicts, complete goals, heal or explore, and take much shorter shopping trips. (You can, in fact, download the shopping trip minigame as a demo!)

For GMs, the goal is to give you a break, so you can start preparing the next Big Event. The minigames invite players to fill in some details of the world, creating shops, landmarks, even creatures.

Annoucning the A.N.I.M. TTRPG Book Club!

The original idea was from @thydungeonguy, but he let us take care of it provided we do most of the heavy lifting to make it run smoothly.

Here’s the short version.

We’re running a club that treats (indie) TTRPG-playing like a book club. There’s a nomination period for RPGs, then a vote to decide which RPG we play, then scheduling discussion, then everyone who can make it(we may split up among multiple groups depending on the number of sign-ups) plays the same adventure with the same RPG(usually a 1-2 session adventure, 3 sessions if it has to go on longer), then we discuss it.

Then, repeat.

The purpose of the club is to play indie tabletop role-playing games that aren't D&D5e, bringing new games to people’s attention and getting to experience how those games work in practice. It’s an encouragement to step out of your comfort zone and try new games with enthusiastic people who love them, and even step out of your comfort zone and learn how to GM a game if you’ve never done it. The way we set up the structure of the club makes it very easy, forgiving, and supportive for GMs even when playing a game they’ve never played before—it’s really not as hard as it seems, especially since we use adventure modules, the greatest GM tool ever devised.

Join up by sending us or @thydungeonguy a message or ask, and maybe you’ll even get to play the full version of Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy for free! That is, if it gets nominated and wins the vote. Even though we’re running the club, our own games aren’t gonna get special treatment.

Despite, and perhaps especially since, our games aren’t getting special priority in the club, and because the A.N.I.M. team is doing everything to organize and support novice GMs and fellow indie TTRPG authors, organizing and running this club is a good amount of extra work for our very small team for no direct profit. We ask that if you enjoy this club, you kindly leave a tip for us on kofi or support us on patreon. It'll keep this server running smoothly and keep us creating TTRPGs, plus with a patreon subscription of at least $5, you get the prerelease rulebook as well as future updates, two horror adventure modules, and two short stories and a novella taking place in the Eureka world!

1. Proving Myself - The Lighthouse at the Edge of the Universe

Keeper: 1035

Date: 1st of Cosmovember, year 9401

Temperature: -10℃

Weather: Cold but invigorating

Observations: Meteor shower

The light kept flickering.

The most crucial, mission-critical part of the building showed signs of malfunctioning; despite my exhaustion, I couldn't delay addressing it.

I was technically prepared for this situation, yet I found myself dreading the task and second-guessing myself as I prepared to take action. I knew that before attempting anything productive, I needed to make some tea.

Simply going through the motions of filling the kettle, listening to the soothing sound of boiling water, and pouring it into my mug calmed me enough.

As expected, once I started looking for the issue, it became apparent that I had dreaded the task for no good reason. It was a simple fix, just a few fuses in need of a replacement - luckily, I kept an ample supply of spare parts on hand. Heh.

Now I'm glad I had the chance to prove myself today, or rather, prove *to* myself that I'm capable enough. I can handle this position; I earned my place here.

With a feeling of accomplishment, I sat down and marvelled at the meteor shower, cradling my second steaming cup of tea in my hands, a plaid blanket wrapped around me.

My goodness, what a breathtakingly chaotic and beautiful universe we inhabit. I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience it all.

I can only hope to bask in this bliss for all eternity.

For the Brief Respite Game Jam, I'm working on a series of Forged in the Dark-style downtime actions that fit into any RPG in any genre. Working title is "Restful Actions" and they're aimed at giving the GM a bit of a break while the players take a break between actions.

One of the mechanics, one of the mini games, is aimed at dealing with resolving tension between characters after an argument or some other uncomfortable revelation. And it's just questions.

But it's the person initiating the conversation asking questions, while the other player decides how long it would take them to answer, and whether they'd lie about it. Which should allow the players to release that tension without their characters necessarily having to.

I also wrote a shopping minigame that should allow two players to solve all of the party's shopping in one scene, instead of dragging it on for several hours while people forget things.

Good evening New Orleans! This is “Mercury” for Rhatz! News, news, news, well, the sun is setting, the moon is rising and hasn’t it been an eventful few days?

Yesterday marked the funeral for beloved musician Peter Allaway. He was well-loved in his community and known for his eccentric but popular tunes. In fact, one of his more popular songs, Sun’s Warmth, has rocketed to the top of the charts once more! The funerary procession headed through the city with music and love. We managed to chat to one of Peter’s old band-mates, here’s what they said...

“Peter was a good guy. Yeah he’d drive you crazy, but he was honest, truthful. The world’s not going to be the same without him.”

In other news, we reported earlier in the week that the police were called to a party over an alleged assault. We now have it officially that an officer was already present at the scene, and that the situation was merely a disagreement, no charges will be pressed. Little spats often appear so much worse when people have swapped out their arms for biomech! Aren’t we lucky to live in such a safe city!

Our other headlines tonight include scandal in the financial world! There’s rumours of insider trading, causing stock market prices in agritech firm Xorn-u-copia to drop earlier this week. But, after an internal investigation, no fault has been found and the stock market prices have now recovered. You know what they say, always buy when the price is low! Our business correspondent will have a full update on that later tonight at ten.

Now, let’s finish off this update with a light note. We have it direct from the people that the most popular place to be right now is Vamp! The club is favoured amongst the freshest and youngest generation for its secret-speak entrance and exclusive clientele. If you know, you know, and if you don’t well you’re clearly just not hip enough.

Gonna be doing a Starforged Ironsworn rp with some friends, so I came up with an idea for a hotshot space pilot who leaned into being the frilliest femme possible because people made fun of her for being so bubbly and energetic! REJECT GRITTINESS, EMBRACE GLITTERINESS.

Also, she may have almost killed a crew on her last expedition. Kiiinda reckless. Nobody really wants to let her on their ship bc of her track record, but she finally found someone crazy enough to give her a shot!

Despite all the kitty theming, her callsign is “Bunny” - because she never stops hopping and zipping around the ship. It’s important to her that she matches Sparkles, and when she tried rabbit ears on her helmet they just proved to be kinda unwieldy, so...
