Hey I’ve been thinking a lot about fusions in Steven universe as a huge fan myself but I have one big problem with Stevonnie, and that’s how mature and icky alot of the plots with them are, for example all of kevin, Lars throw away sorta crush etc. I was just curious because I read your steg post and I found it really interesting and agreed with it!
I was just curious as someone who looks way more into the show what’s your take on the topic of stevonnie and how or why they differ so much from steg!
I don't think Lars was shown as a "throw away crush"--both he and Sadie had a dazzled reaction when Stevonnie walked into the donut shop, and it was Sadie who blushed and insisted the donuts were on the house. Not only Sadie and Lars but Sour Cream and everyone who saw them at the rave were enchanted with Stevonnie.
But if you were a little grossed out by the "maturity" of that episode, you'll be very happy to know that was intentional! When speaking about the episode's intent, Rebecca Sugar said it's about how it feels to suddenly find the world responding to you differently when you're going through puberty and you suddenly have an attractive/adult body and people are presenting you with opportunities you're not familiar with and not ready for. And treating you like you should like it when you hardly even know what it is. Expecting you to play a game when you don't know the rules. A quote of Rebecca's from an interview:
"Stevonnie challenges gender norms as an individual, but also serves as a metaphor for all the terrifying firsts in a first relationship, and what it feels like to hit puberty and suddenly find yourself with the body of an adult, how quickly that happens, how it feels to have a new power over people, or to suddenly find yourself objectified, all for seemingly no reason since you’re still just you… "
You see Stevonnie just kinda enjoying that Lars and Sadie don't recognize them and treat them like something incredible and special when Connie's never been cool and Steven's always been sort of tolerated or humored by the young adults in town. But then when Kevin enters the picture it's scary. "This dance isn't fun!" They had pictures in their head of how cool a dance party would be but the actual reality of it was super uncomfortable and unforeseen.
I remember reading a LOT of disturbed reactions to this episode on a message board from when it first came out. Some of the (straight) men said they just weren't used to being the POV character while being unwillingly objectified by a strange man in a club, and had never viscerally understood until this episode why that seemed SO creepy. And a lot of the women, on the other hand, recognized it from personal experience instantly. There are several scenes that have the viewer actually seeming to see what Stevonnie sees, including when Kevin is looking them up and down.
The episode is about some of the joy and terror of that experience, from the point of view of the experience.
Some folks have wondered why Stevonnie doesn't appear to have any duplicated limbs or eyes, especially after we found out from Steg that looking totally humanoid is not a side effect of being three quarters human. I think part of the reason they made that design choice is that Stevonnie was meant to be seen during their debut venture as a stunning, magnetic person, and if they'd looked alien at all we might have interpreted the stares and gasps as reactions to a weird sight instead of a gorgeous stranger. (And it's super nice to see them interpreted by guys and gals as attractive, though Kevin clearly sees them as a girl at first and addresses them as such.)
That said, maybe they have a duplication that doesn't show. I like to headcanon that they might have two hearts. <3

Well it's not totally a new power, kinda like shape-shifting amped up/made possible with the power of influence. Stevonnie with stretchy rubber powers, requested by E350; a nd Connie.. finally discovers one piece and is hooked, requested by Dsdmedia at Patreon! I never made a two in one with requests before, but I just couldn't help it. :P I thought of making the comic with Spinel and/or Amethyst in it, but I can't think of a scenario+dialogue. So, I'm thinking, Connie just picked up on One Piece, just to take a break from her studies. Then she just couldn't stop watching it in one sitting and crammed it in between all the other stuff she's doing. [Oh, she does see the flaws and she will take another sleepless night making a thesis on the good and bad qualities of the series. lol ] Steven wasn't happy about it when he found out but she usually can get away with her tendency of self destructive stubbornness when he's not around. Connie was mildly ashamed about it but she still has no regrets. (The tendency of self destructive stubbornness is my headcanon, by the way. Don't know if she really has that.)
THANK YOU TO THE PEOPLE WHO SUPPORTED ME AT PATREON THIS MONTH! Also thank you to Jeshua Morbus for helping with Stevonnie's Spanish dialogue!

Hezu, do you think it's possible to actually redeem the diamonds in Steven universe?
How would you do it?
Or would you not redeem them at all?
Oh well See, when I was watching the series, they made it clear that Blue and Yellow were going to be redeemed pretty early on.
They did a ton of bad stuff and thought in a poor way, but it was all blamed on White Diamond. Yellow and Blue were afraid of her for a reason. Yellow said everything she's done (destroy planets and kill biologics) is because White Diamond asked it of her. But Yellow was never good enough or praised for it. It was just expected, and if she fell out of line, she could be punished. Blue says they used to be close, at least, that's what she thought until she realized Pink Diamond was trying to make them better. Make them happier. She admits they aren't a happy family, maybe they never were. Blue confesses she's miserable, and she doesn't want to enforce White's rules anymore. When Stevonnie fuses in front of the Gala, it's clear that White Diamond is the most upset by this. Blue and Yellow whisper yell at them, in shock at the "inappropriate fusion". But it's clear that White Diamond is the one who enforced all this. She's the one who is constantly talking about "perfection" and "off-color". If you aren't pure white, a collection of every color, then you have a flaw. If you have to fuse, you are flawed and trying to be bigger and better by collecting other gems or colors. If your body is flawed, you must have limb enhancers to meet our standards. It's all White Diamond. Blue and Yellow were so adamant, everything was being pushed on White Diamond. She was the Queen enforcer. AND, if the other Diamonds didn't do what she said, SHE COULD LITERALLY STEAL THEIR FREE WILL FROM THEM AND CONTROL THEM LIKE PUPPETS.
White Diamond, is so genuinely fucked up on so many levels. She's also the one who manipulated Steven's mind, she hurt Pink Diamond and the others immensely, and she also almost killed Steven. Everything bad in Gem society was pushed to be HER fault. She started all of this, even if she herself maybe didn't actively participate. She's the catalyst.
And she gets redeemed because Steven told a joke (that actually, White Diamond shouldn't understand. There is no concept of children in gem society. They burst out of the ground, and that is how they are, they already know what they're supposed to be and do, and they will be like that forever. Calling Steven a "child" doesn't seem like something any gem should ever say except for those who stayed on Earth. White Diamond maybe looked at his memories, but even so, that shouldn't have been the first thing to come to her mind.)
The fact that she thinks she is "flawed" when she turns pink is also strange. Pink is not an official color of light. White says "Pink is a part of me that I must repress" already??? Kind of admitting?? Pink is like/// part of her??? And a flaw?? Her entire wording is really confusing and I don't understand what Rebecca was trying to make her say here. We never really established color importance in gem society until White Diamond. And if you don't understand the current science of it, you'll be pretty lost, and even then, I still don't understand what the hell White Diamond's reasoning is. Shouldn't we have a color-inferior class in society then? If she thinks White Gems are superior for absorbing all colors? Does that mean multi-colored gems are the lowest for being unable to absorb any of the colors? It doesn't make sense to me. You cannot turn back thousands of years of abuse, fusionphobia, colorism(???), mass genocide, and societal oppression with a joke. You can't do that. White Diamond just changes herself at the flip of a coin. She BLUSHES and goes through an existential crisis. And somehow, instead of getting defensive and doubling down like a proper narcissistic person would, she miraculously changes.
But actually, she doesn't. She still thinks biologics are disgusting. She's still awkward around fusions. She still thinks Steven belongs with her despite what she did to him. She thinks she can redeem herself by making people control her instead (and she is big, and beautiful, and perfect, and powerful, so she's just helping people be HER for a day so they can feel CONFIDENT .... wtf is this. Yellow Diamond is slaving away, physically piecing the shattered remains of gems back together to reverse her fucked up experiments one by one. Blue Diamond is offering therapy to those she has mentally affected in the past. White Diamond saying "here, control ME" is like... I don't see how this is supposed to help someone. Especially when we see Steven. Controlling someone who abused you in the past isn't healthy. That's just leaving them open to abuse your abuser. )
Sorry I rambled but long story short
Yellow and Blue's redemption is believable.
White's is not. White Diamond should have either gone insane and been locked up or bubbled away. This show has redeemed everyone, but not everyone WANTS to be redeemed. White has burned every bridge, and I don't think it's fair to rebuild them when she has not truly changed. She hasn't earned a redemption because she doesn't feel like she's actually changed or even really wants to. Steven Universe has erased every consequence to every action. Every single thing is fixable, (except Pink Diamond's death, which, by their logic is ironically ALSO VERY FIXABLE, but they pretend its not. They wanna have their cake and eat it too I guess)
But if you remove consequences and damage to people, you would just have chaos. No one can die. Any quarrels are temporary in the wake of immortals.
White Diamond should not have been redeemed.

since it’s been a while since i’ve posted properly on this app, here’s a 1212 word essay i wrote at 1 am a while ago during a fit of insanity.
the parallels and key differences between rupphire and conniverse:
to start off, the way the relationships btw ruby and sapphire, and steven and connie develop are different in pace.
ruby and sapphire being the lovesick lesbians that they are, don’t fall in love instantly but establish their romantic relationship pretty quickly. as seen in the episode, the answer, the two gems get to know each other and become extremely close after ruby saves sapphire from being shattered by blue diamond and they accidentally fuse as garnet for the first time. w/ fusion between two different gems being seen as taboo on homeworld, they have to flee down to earth. over their time together, interacting w/ nature and rapidly falling in love, ruby and sapphire come to the agreement that they liked the way they felt as garnet, and they choose to fuse again on their own terms, solidifying their relationship.
but w/ steven and connie, their relationship starts out as pure friendship. before they met on the beach in the episode, bubble buddies, steven mentions having first seen connie at a parade in town a year before the show starts. connie didn’t have any friends, and w/ his admiration of the girl steven quickly became her first one. from that, they become best friends that are inseparable. we first see a glimpse of connie’s future sword fighting skills as she fights a gem defense weapon along side steven in the episode, lion 2: the movie, and we get confirmation that the two have mutual crushes on each other in an indirect kiss, seeing how connie was going in to kiss steven before getting a headache from wearing her glasses w/ her newly healed eyes.
the gems know how important connie is to steven (including his crush on her) and quickly become fond of her. even going as far as to fuse as alexandrite to impress mr. and mrs. maheswaran when steven meets them for the first time in fusion cuisine. garnet, more than anyone, was very happy with the kids’ friendship. this can be said to be due to her future vision and her knowing how their friendship would eventually evolve into more, but i believe it was more-so bc she saw herself and ruby and sapphire’s relationship in theirs. this was made apparent in the episode, alone together, after steven and connie dance and end up fusing to be stevonnie for the first time. amethyst and pearl were shocked to see a human fuse w/ a gem, as it was previously thought that someone like stevonnie could never exist. but garnet was absolutely ecstatic to see the fusion, donning the biggest grin on her face when she first laid her eyes upon them.
fusion is used to display different types of relationships throughout the duration of the show. btw like-gems, such as ruby guards, fusion is purely practical and has no changes in appearance other than size. but btw different gems, fusion reflects the relationship the gems have w/ each other. w/ more healthy relationships, fusions such as opal and rainbow quartz are more stable and have some abnormalities but nothing harmful. but the more toxic a relationship is, which is explicitly shown with jasper and lapis’ fusion, malachite, the more unstable and difficult it is to stay together. garnet is one of the most stable fusions on the show due to ruby and sapphire’s deep love for each other and their ability to usually resolve their conflicts together in a calm and understanding way. we don’t see a fusion this stable until stevonnie first makes their appearance, which is why garnet repeats these words to them when she sees them doubting themself: “stevonnie, you are not two people, and you are not one person. you…are an experience! make sure you’re a good experience. now go have fun!”
even though steven and connie don’t get together romantically until the movie, they still have their moments. in full disclosure, the first episode of season 2, steven ignores connie’s worried calls after returning to earth from getting taken hostage by peridot and jasper. having experienced all this new trauma (with much more in store), he didn’t want to put connie in the line of danger or dump his problems onto her. he sings abt being scared of not being able to protect connie from his gem-related battles and escapades, wanting to keep her away from all the horrible things he’s experienced at such a young age. when connie comes to confront him, he finally tells her the truth and she says in return to him not wanting her to get involved, “i want to steven. i want to be a part of your universe.” from there, connie slowly becomes a part of the crystal gems, becoming a master of sword fighting with pearl as her teacher. steven, concerned with his young appearance at his age, makes a reference to being called “first boy” instead of first man when connie becomes president in the episode, steven’s birthday, alluding to the fact that he plans to marry connie someday. and they train more together as stevonnie, having previously promised each other that they would always fight as a team. when aquamarine and topaz come to take a bunch of humans back to homeworld for pink’s human zoo, steven sacrifices himself by revealing his gem to them. and as connie’s screaming at him to stop and the door to the ship closes, steven looks back and mutters, “i love you.” it’s debated whether or not this was directed to his family or to connie, taking one last chance to tell her his true feelings. they’re a new couple in the movie and have an established relationship in the epilogue series, steven universe: future.
to illustrate more comparisons btw rupphire and connverse, we can take a look at their character. both ships contain red and blue coded characters, which is a popular trope btw romantic relationship in animated shows. ruby and steven, both red coded, are more quick to act and reckless, having no hesitation to put themselves in danger to protect the ones they love. sapphire and connie, blue coded, are both calmer and more collected, using their wits and patience to think out a solution but often forgetting to prioritize their own feelings in the process. ruby and sapphire, and steven and connie, are all shown to not be perfect, for perfect relationships do no exist. in garnet’s words, love takes time and love takes work. both couples have episodes that show how they can have disagreements and conflicts w/ each other, but what sets them aside as healthy and stable relationships are their abilities to solve their problems together without screaming matches and violence, but with talking it through and explaining what they’re upset with calmly. ruby and sapphire had been in a relationship for over 5,750 years, but steven and connie continued to following in their example despite their relationship being relatively new.
overall, steven and connie’s budding relationship in the steven universe franchise was a reflection of ruby and sapphire and their love for each other. despite their ups and downs, they all solved their differences and became stronger together after each time. their love for each other is unmatched, and not even the strongest diamond can tear them apart.

I love Steven Universe (especially SUF) cuz I get to see so many great queer characters and it makes me proud to be queer. And also plural. Like hey they’re all so pretty not just aesthetically but like. They’re just there ya know? Being queer and happy. And fusions also. Like I see Stevonnie and I’m like. They’re multiple people and the same person and they’re so cool and pretty and they love each other and just. Ugh. SU good.

I think part of the reason why Steven Universe impacted me so much, was because it's a show that's insanely relatable. Steven spent like, 4 seasons having a complete identity crisis, and couldn't even control his powers until season 2 ish.
In a lot of mainstream cartoons, a super-powered protagonist is shown to either know how to control their powers right away, or they learn REALLY really fast. I enjoyed that Steven's progress WASNT linear. He summoned his shield, but then couldn't do it again for awhile. He could float, but had a difficult time controlling it, as seen when he's falling and rattling off things that make him happy on more than one occasion. One of the few that he got sort of quickly was his bubble, but it took till his fight with Amethyst to realize he could manipulate it and make different shapes and use as as more than defense.
SU did a really good job at steadily reminding us that Steven was just a kid, and the things he goes through WILL affect him. More than once he contemplated his feelings for his mom, to go from being indifferent, maybe even loving her to an extent, to disliking her as he learned more about her and the things that she did, to even hatred, when he had thought she had shattered a gem, something that he thought she would never do based off of what he was always told. His feelings for her were realistic. He didn't have any kind of unwavering faith or love for his mother. He wanted to be like her, but only because he thought the gems would be better off is he WAS. He still constantly refers to her as his mom, meaning he at the very least cares for her or her image, but he doesn't want to be like her or have any ties to HER past. A lot of shows don't delve this deep into their characters, and Steven's relationship with his mom is something I love to analyze (I will be doing a full analysis on it at some point)
Another reason I love the show is that it has a VAST amount of LGBTQ+ representation. I was so thrilled when Stevonnie first emerged. It was my first experience with non-binary characters, and seeing them put in a positive light, as someone who had JUST come out and was in the process of accepting themselves, it was nice, to know that if I wanted to, i could be open and a lot of people would love and respect me regardless. SU and it's representation had a HUGE impact on me and how I viewed myself as a 15 year old non-binary asexual.
The last thing I'm going to talk about on my reasons I love this show, is how it addresses trauma. Now I have seen a LOT of anime and cartoons, and the way that the Crewniverse handled it was by FAR the most accurate and relatable. This show was a coping mechanism for me for a very long time. I watched it to escape my own trauma and the things that I was going through at the time, so I'm a bit emotionally attached to it. The relationship between Lapis and Jasper very accurately describes being in an abusive relationship, I can't remember the exact episode, but when they were on the boat, and Lapis admitting to missing being with Jasper, and missing being Malichite because they were strong, it resonated. And especially when in that SAME episode, Jasper crashes onto the boat, begging for Lapis to fuse with her, stating that they would "be better this time" and that Jasper had "changed" it was classic narc behavior. I adored seeing Lapis stand up to her abuser, and her progress wasn't linear either, considering she was weary of water for a long time despite that being part of her character.
Steven Universe Future is probably my favorite response to a character being severely traumatized. He didn't have an all put meltdown seemingly out of nowhere, we watched it build up for 20 episodes, we watched Steven struggle and slowly but surely lose his mind. We watched him fall apart, but we also watched him heal with a healthy support system. Also, this was the first show I've ever watched that had a main character CLEARLY state that they had/were seeing a therapist. I love that he didn't magically get better and fully heal with a bit of love, faith, and pixie dust.
Anyway, I've rambled on long enough I think. It's been 5 years since I first joined this Fandom, and I haven't been able to watch a single show that even comes close to this one. I forgot why it was my favorite for awhile, but sitting down and rewatching it really made me remember why.
I think everyone should give it a watch. Even one time, it can teach you a lot of things. It was... almost like my own therapy. It helped me heal a lot from my own traumas.
Be the Steven you want to see in the world ❤️
TL;DR: Steven Universe is a wonderful show that realistically portrays emotions and struggles and handles them in healthy ways.

you have any aplatonic headcanons?
Aplatonic Peridot (Steven Universe)
Peridot is canonly aroace, which is shown from her rejection of fusions. Fusions are when two gem aliens fuse together into one being, representing their relationship. This is most well-known as a romantic relationship (Garnet and Stevonnie) but fusions can also represent any type of relationship, like familial relationships and friends.
So it sort of makes Peridot canonly aplatonic as well as canonly aroace, since she doesn't want to fuse with anyone, not just in a romantic way.
Demiplatonic Kusuo Saiki (Saiki Kusuo no PSI nan / The Disastrous Life of Saiki Kusuo)
Saiki is very asocial and introverted throughout the series, and its kind of a platonic slow burn as he warms up to the people who insist they are his friends.
Aplspec Twilight Sparkle (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic)
Twilight starts the series quite isolated, with only one friend, no desire to make any more, and is quite happy with the way her life is.
Unfortunetly the series isn't aplatonic-friendly, so her mentor forces her to go out and make more friends, and the rest of the series is basically about proving Twilight wrong and showing her how "magical" friendship really is.
Aplspec Kris (Deltarune)
First off, Kris reads as very neurodivergent-coded and a lot of apls are neurodivergent and have those identities intersect.
Kris cares about Susie and views her as a friend, but they're not the type of person to show grand gestures of affection. Or show any sense of affection in ways that would be easy to see or pick up on.
Further, Kris' relationship with Noelle reminds me of the "time blindness" that some aplatonics feel towards people. Noelle viewed the two of them as having grown apart over the years, but Kris seems to very quickly go back to being good friends with her. When playing as Kris and asked about your relationship with Noelle, your only options are "yes we're friends" or "no we're something else." I think it would make a lot of sense that an aplatonic Kris would have considered them friends this entire time.
Tokyo Ghoul & Choujin X
I'm just gonna link this post from my TG sideblog so I don't end up repeating myself, since I went pretty in-depth there.
But TLDR: Ishida Sui's works I feel have relatable aplatonic vibes in the writing of platonic relationships and found family, and I can see a lot of the main TG cast as aplspec.

Steven Universe Changed my Life
So, I've often alluded to my friends that the series Steven Universe literally changed, & arguably saved, my life. I've never gone into the full story, though, merely passing mentions & anecdotes.
It's time for the full story.
Allow me to take you back to the year 2016. It almost feels hard to believe that was 6 years ago now. Let me introduce you to a 14 year old boy by the name of Keller. A young man who had been losing his way in the world, or at least that's what he thought.
I don't wish to bring up anything that might harm anyone, yet I do need to allude to 2016's news cycle, as it also is essential to this story. That was the first year he truly paid attention to the news, & all he saw was anger, hatred, & bigotry. At a point just two years prior, he might have, even passively, agreed with the xenophobic vitriol being spewed.
However, he was entering his phase of rebellion, & seeing the hatred come from an authority figure, & knowing that some of his family members agreed with it caused something to snap within him. He needed an outlet, a release; one which didn't come until early July of that same year.
Sadly, he did still feel some hatred from his teenage sense of superiority, primarily directed towards children's cartoons. As such, Keller ate up Worst Modern Cartoon Lists, but would occasionally watch a Best Cartoon List. That, my friends, is where he found something entirely different to what he had known, yet still similar enough. A musical action cartoon called Steven Universe.
The first thing he watched from the series was Stronger Than You, unfortunately ruining the Garnet reveal, yet he was happy to have seen that first, because it introduced him to something new: the idea of, not even a healthy one, but just a same-sex relationship within media, & that changed his world.
As a minor tangent, Keller had been raised a Christian in a homophobic household, yet had been drifting from his religion, due the unfortunate connection that is easily made between homophobic & transphobic sentiment & Christianity. This was the same year he renounced his religion, but that is a much longer story, one for another day.
Ruby & Sapphire, a lesbian couple, being shown in such a healthy manner, was unique to him at that point, having not seen The Legend of Korra at the time.
From this, something clicked in his mind: "Maybe, should this be a healthy portrayal, could that be the norm for all gay couples?" He found the answer to be Yes.
Rubipphire, however, wasn't the biggest revelation for him, however. That, my friends, would be Stevonnie.
Stevonnie was a true anomaly to him at this point: A fusion of a boy & a girl? What could even come of this? An identity new to him: Non-binary.
The idea of using "They" as a neutral pronoun was something he had been doing subconsciously already, but, learning about Stevonnie & non-binary people in general, convinced him that perhaps They was easier to default to.
While her confirmation would come much later, Peridot being Asexual was an excellent revelation for him as well.
At the time that all of this was happening, Keller was slowly losing his hope & love for humanity, yet this series, this one simple series, was what he attributed to him keeping that last sliver of hope.
And then, we have the episode that aired the same day he started watching, July 19th: Mr. Greg. For further context, Keller had been raised on Veggietales, Phineas & Ferb, & Disney films, all musicals. Mr. Greg was the full musical episode, & included what is, even now, her favorite song of the series, It's Over (Isn't it?).
Deedee Magno Hall's vocal performance was unlike anything that had been featured in the series up to that point, & it blew that young man out of the water. Even more so, it was a song of lost love, regret, & tragedy, sung by another lesbian character.
The young man was deep into the theory crafting side of the fandom, always wondering what the next fusion would be, who the next villain would be. One that was objectively wrong, yet one I still find funny, was the idea of Amethyst turning against the Crystal Gems.
Additionally, Steven Universe was one of the few things that made him cry. A series full of emotional moments, with dangerously relatable characters, & a young man going through hormonal mood swings is a surefire equation for tears. Even now, some of those moments still make her tear up. Most notably, Amethyst's breakdown in On The Run.
However, the next moment to truly stick would not come until July 6th, 2019. The final minute of the original series, the final song, Change Your Mind. While something I struggle with, even now, that song's message of self-love is beautiful to me.
Sadly, no revelations would come due to the movie or Future, yet he still enjoyed them greatly.
This is very long & rambly, & for that I apologize. I just wanted to talk about the main reason why this series means so much to me. It guided me through a time in my life where I was without a map, my old one having been torn to scraps.
I know I praised the music several times, but I don't think I can say enough good about it. aivi & surasshu & Rebecca Sugar all did amazing work. I cannot saw how often I get some of the songs stuck in my head, & I always smile, because they remind me of my first steps on my journey to who I am now, & who I will be tomorrow.
As a final aside, what an irony that Stevonnie was the first character I recognized as non-binary, & 2.5 years later, I started self identifying as non-binary. Of course, I used He/They at that point, yet that, too, is a story for another day.
I had planned to put this out on the 19th, yet I finished it in the course of a single night. Perhaps I neglected some things, &, in such case, edits will be made, lol.
Thank you for reading my mini-essay. May you take pleasure in your own journey.
Blessed Be, Paige. 💖💖

Stevonnie and Garnet dynamic my beloved my everything
LEGIT THO. Stevonnie and Garnet are so cool. Stevonnie is the best example but she really treats all fusions like that, reasonably so you can see why
Fusion is a deeply personal and highly important thing to Garnet. When Steven fuses with Connie for the first time in Alone Together she is so excited, probably because they didn’t even know if Steven COULD fuse until that point, and he somehow managed to fuse with another human. She is so excited and happy for them and just tells them to go have fun and be themselves, to learn who they are, and they do just that. In Fusion Cousine im pretty sure Garnet is the one to say them fusing into Alexandrite isnt a good idea, because it’s important to her and Alexandrite isnt Meant for things like that, shes too unstable for anything outside of big fights and shes made up of so many components, two of which cant stay fused for more than 10 minutes on their own. Her first major song is about being a fusion and how much she loves it. Come season 2, seeing messed up fusion experiments done by Homeworld cut her so deep she almost splits then and there, she is so emotionally distraught by seeing something so important to her be used in such an awful way she barely manages to literally hold it together. She stops talking to Pearl for weeks after Cry For Help, because Pearl took something that she Knows is that important to Garnet, and she misuses that trust and fusion, hell that time she Does split (and for 24 hours steven gets to experience being a child of divorce /j) and afterwards its not a quick fix it takes a while for Garnet to be completely comfortable around Pearl again. Her excitement over fusion does have its drawbacks as well, the main example i can think of being Know Your Fusion when Steven and Amethyst decide to show off Smokey Quartz to Pearl and Garnet, resulting in the latter two fusing themselves into Sardonyx and accidentally feeding into Smoky’s insecurities about not being good enough trying to learn more about them. In that episode Garnet’s side of the fusion and her excitement over the fact that Steven and Amethyst managed to fuse is what blinds her to who Smokey is, how they’re feeling and what shes doing and feeding into
Its kind if disappointing the show got cut short and the rest if the crystal gem fusions had to be crammed together so quickly, if they had of had the time to do it properly i think that Garnet and Steven’s fusion could have been a really interesting and emotional thing, Garnet loves fusion and she loves Steven, so getting to fuse with him would have been something she was Ecstatic about getting to do (same goes for Rainbow 2.0 i think he could have been an incredible point in Pearl’s arc of her getting over Rose completely and fusing with Steven to create whats implied to be the only fusion that Rose herself ever took part in).
Fusion and the way its treated in the show is so cool and interesting, theres a reason Giant Woman is such a beloved episode

sometimes I think about how there are gonna be kids out there who see characters like stevonnie or double trouble or raine who are explicitly acknowledged as nonbinary and realize that being nonbinary is real and valid, or that their feelings about their gender are real and valid, and it makes me so damn happy and so appreciative of creators who fight to represent us

The Abusive Treatment the Diamonds Showed Pink
TRIGGER WARNING: Discussion of neglect, emotional abuse, manipulation, child abuse
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE ENTIRE PLOT OF STEVEN UNIVERSE!!!
For the first leg of the series, Pink Diamond was painted to be a major antagonist. However once the Gems learned that Rose Quartz and Pink Diamond were one and the same, many fans began to resent Pink/Rose for her selfish actions. When looking back at the pain she has caused, it can make one wonder why she turned out to be so selfish in her decision-making. I propose that the answer lies in her upbringing by the other diamonds, primarily the two that had the most contact with her, Blue Diamond and Yellow Diamond.
Tumblr media
Yellow Diamond made it quite clear to Pink that she did not view her as an equal, but a child to be looked after. In Stevonnie’s shared dream/flashback sequence in “Jungle Moon”, Yellow Diamond directly attacks Pink’s maturity by snapping at her and telling her that she doesn’t behave how someone of her status should. When Yellow isn’t lecturing Pink, she neglects her needs entirely, seeing Pink as a hindrance that would distract her from her work running the empire.
Tumblr media
Blue Diamond, instead of neglecting Pink, emotionally abused her by using her power of projecting her emotions onto others to make Pink feel just as upset (if not more) than her. She also guilt-tripped Pink for behaving immaturely and manipulated Pink into always feeling like the problem, which we see very clearly in Steven’s flashback/dream in the series finale, “Change Your Mind”. Steven makes this point of Blue’s abusive behavior best when he confronts her with the question; “How many times did you lock her in here? How many times did you make her cry?”
Tumblr media
The most damning of all, and also illustrated clearly by “Change Your Mind”, they locked Pink away in a tower by herself when she misbehaved. This is just textbook child abuse, as it completely isolated Pink from the outside world. She would be kept in that tower for ages until the other diamonds felt she had been in there long enough to show improvement, like some twisted version of a time-out or grounding. While Pink Diamond did do many things I can’t agree with, I would argue that with the information as to why she is the way she is, it makes more sense that she tended to fend for her own happiness above all else.

SU Music Rankings
Bc I can and I wanna start some Disk Horse rip. These are all in order of preference, with explanations, etc. It’s a long bitch. That said, I’m not counting little short jingles or small joke songs like Little Butler. This is the meat and potatoes of SU music- just under 30 songs. I might do the rest if people like my takes lol.
I scored it mostly on three bases- how dear it was to my heart, how much/often I relisten to it, and also what it means to the plot. That said, little fun songs don’t automatically go farther down than big, plot-heavy songs either! It’s a strange little balance.
Special Note: I don’t dislike any of this music! I love SU and that includes its bumps and glitches. I just pick favorite children lol.
Tumblr media
1.) Change
Was there ever a more Steven moment than when he wiped the blood off his face and kissed it into sparkles? I think not.
If “Be Wherever You Are” is an ode to young Steven, then this is teen Steven’s. Talking about change, and how much and how little it can do. How he holds his arms up for Spinel to hug him, so trusting. How he seems able to just. Break into soft tears at will, and not to be manipulative- it’s just his kind nature. The warmth in his voice. Fuck yesssss.
Tumblr media
2.) Change Your Mind
This song is only fifty five seconds and it’s EVERYTHING to me. It really felt like someone was speaking the words I’d always held deep inside of me, unsure of how to say. It feels like a goodbye to someone who never really loved me.
As much as I enjoyed Future, if this was the finale of SU, I would’ve been perfectly okay with that.
Tumblr media
3.) Drift Away
This song gave me legitimate shivers the first time I heard it, and it still haunts me to this day. Spinel stayed, and waited, and all she got was a transmission thousands of years later. Fuck.
Tumblr media
4.) Here We Are In The Future
THE MOVIE IS SU AS ITS BEST AND I WON’T BE SWAYED ON IT. Steven being a teen who loves his weird family but is growing just a bit sarcastic to their drama. The adorable love he and Connie share. His slow realization that he will always be working, always have things to do, is both somber and real. The Crystal Gems won’t be safe with one epic battle. They’ll be safe with years of hard work and love. HIS LITTLE HANDSHAKE WITH AMETHYST.
This is a helluva bop and a great way to summarize the main character’s backstories.
Tumblr media
5.) Let’s Only Think About Love
Did ya’ll know that Zach Callison killed his throat with that last note? He gave his all for this performance in a vocal range he no longer comfortably do and by god did it SHINE. The FLAIR. The FORESHADOWING. All of the Gems all being awkward about Rose and Steven trying to bring them to the present. Peridot having a mini-existential crisis in a cute yellow dress. I love Zach Callison’s normal singing voice but man is that a fucking bop. Nothing will ever beat it.
Tumblr media
6.) Here Comes A Thought
This bad boy helped me out a LOT with some mental issues I was dealing with in high school. I was unmedicated, unsupervised, and full of anxiety. I’d have break downs when I tried to speak about certain things. I couldn’t function. This song inspired me. It helped me feel okay with my intrusive thoughts.
And the episode! -chef’s kiss-. Once again bringing up the morally gray area of training child soldiers. Connie expanding her social group. Steven’s trauma hauling ass in that second half. The ANIMATION. Stevonnie’s gorgeous singing voice. GOD yes.
Tumblr media
7.) It’s Over Isn’t It?
Just barely squeaking above Stronger Than You, this ballad is everything gorgeous. The whole episode is. I think Mr. Greg stands in the top five of my episodes for the entire show. It even got nominated!
There’s just so much about this song that I love. The gentle melancholy of Pearl’s voice. How the crew had to redo the shots for this bit bc Deedee went so fucking hard. The hard cuts between Pearl, remembering the love of her life, and Steven, who has begun to feel like he took her away. I’d recommend this song to anyone, regardless of what they do or don’t know about SU, simply bc it tugs so many heartstrings of love, loss, and responsibility.
Tumblr media
8.) Stronger Than You
Did you realize this episode aired SEVEN years ago? This bitch was what got me into SU! Hearing about Ruby and Sapphire made my little gay heart so happy inside, and then getting a whole song confirming that they were a couple, that their love powered the strongest Gem on the team? Aaaaaaaaa
To this DAY I get excited when I hear Estelle start singing. This song is timeless. This song will live in media history. God I fucking love this song.
Tumblr media
9.) Other Friends
I’m not the biggest musical person, so I hadn’t heard of Sarah Stiles before her casting as Spinel, but JESUS CHRIST the lady went hard. She went SO fucking hard. Sarah Stiles started on 100 and somehow just kept CLIMBING. You can just hear the sheer manic energy building in her voice, the anger and resentment. 10/10 Sarah Stiles is a queen.
Tumblr media
10.) Independent Together
This made the list entirely bc the crew was like “you’re gonna get a himbo ass Steven-Greg fusion singing with Opal while Garnet flies across the moon on Lion while floating” and I am forever thankful to them for it
Tumblr media
11.) Who We Are
Bismuth deserved more songs. ‘Nuff said.
Tumblr media
12.) Peace and Love (On the Planet Earth)
It Could’ve been Great is EASILY one of my favorite s2 episodes. I love the entire concept of this song. Of Steven making music to reflect how much Earth means to him and his family. Of him teaching Peridot some self-care. Also Peridot’s singing voice is really cute and squeaky.
I know it’s silly, but I would’ve really enjoyed a flip around of this in Future! Like Peridot reminding Steven how much he loves music, that he needs to take time to relax for himself, maybe with a new verse or just a remix of the original song!
Tumblr media
13.) Something Entirely New
I watched this episode as it aired, and I legitimately almost cried. I love Charlyne Yi’s voice so much ya’ll- her raspy, not perfect singing voice against Sapphire’s deep soothing lull is great.
And to have Ruby and Sapphire’s meeting be the way it was- for Ruby to bemoan Sapphire losing Homeworld, to being stuck with a single Ruby, while Sapphire is a noble who has always been taught everyone in her “caste” is vitally important (and has, in her own mind, taken that to mean every Gem, as she should) and how they come together and make each other happy. Good shit good shit.
Tumblr media
14.) I’m Just a Comet
The fact that Greg’s music career never really blasted off pisses me off to this day bc Tom Scharpling’s voice is fucking BUTTER. Also the song really feels like a jab at his parents now that we know the kind of dynamic he had growing up. “This life in the stars if all I’ve ever known” is definitely him wiping away their existence after reminding them (and himself) the things they used to say about him.
Tumblr media
15.) Do It For Her
This episode. This fucking episode. This episode got me permanently hooked on SU. I’d just binged season 1 and was kinda meh about it overall after the bop of Stronger Than You. “Oh,” I thought to myself, foolishly, “I’ll probably just casually watch this from time to time.”
Like three days later Sworn to the Sword aired and that was it. I was hooked! Pearl’s gentle training song turning darker and darker, Connie’s accompaniment from nervous to determined to fully into such a toxic mindset. The fact that SU had the BALLS to discuss the repercussions of training child soldiers, now and later. This episode was everything to me, STILL is everything to me.
Six years and well over 100 fanfics written later, I think it’s safe to say this show swallowed me whole and never let go.
Tumblr media
16.) System/Boot.pearl_final(3)
I debated putting this on the list because it’s not anything crazy important, just a way to show things are Wrong, but I had to do it entirely bc Pearl is so damn SALTY.
Like telling us about the Gems makes sense, she felt like she was given a duty, but she went so damn petty. WHY is that Ruby alone. Gross. This Amethyst is a trash dump. Wtf are you people.
Tumblr media
17.) Full Disclosure
This episode really feels like a turning point for SU. Before, the show had its dark moments- but now we’re in the thick of it, and it’s not going away. Full Disclosure felt like an rebuff to the idea of returning to any normal we’d established in season 1. Gems are actually a giant species now. Gems tried to kill us now. There’s this Yellow Diamond bitch who got namedropped. Something about a Cluster.
The song itself is BALLER, with its ingenious use of Steven’s ringtone and photos as he tries to decide whether to clue in Connie on all this nonsense. Meanwhile we, the audience, already know damn well Connie about to yeet some common sense into him.
Tumblr media
18.) What’s the Use of Feeling Blue?
I’mma admit it- I’m a Yellow Diamond stan. I’ve always loved her- her anger, her poise, her hardworking nature. I actively argued against the “Yellow Shattered Pink” theories back in the day. But, man, when this arc leaked? I got so overexcited I was too jittery to watch it for like two days. It’s easily my favorite arc of the series. The sheer alien nature of the zoo, the Famethyst, and absolutely Patti Lupone’s beautiful ballad. Goddamn. Yellow singing to Blue to try and help her regain her old status, the warble in her voice as she reminds Blue she misses Pink too, the movement of the bubbles as she talks about attack. It gives me shivers to this day. FUCK.
Tumblr media
19.) Tower of Mistakes
This is, fun fact, that only SU song I have completely memorized. The story itself is kinda funny! See, we lost internet at my house for a solid 5 to 6 months when these episodes aired, so I only got a very brief window to view them all. But this was the first Amethyst song in a long while, and I didn’t want to forget it! So I keep replaying it in my head for ages. And that’s still definitely a thing.
Anyway will never not be sad that this entire song was about making it up to Garnet for Amethyst’s perceived slights with Sugilite (which was a two-way road), only for Garnet to pressure her into fusion later when pissed and never discuss it again bc Garnet probably never thought twice about it and Amethyst has the emotional openness of a clam that’s just been told its ugly. Helluva way to make someone feel like shit, G. Helluva way to bottle that shit, Ames.
Tumblr media
20.) On the Run
I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times: Amethyst! Needed! More! Songs!
The dichotomy between Steven’s play and Amethyst’s honest desire to run away from home is so well-done, especially when you consider a lot of Steven and Amethyst’s actions are playing together. The song is also near and dear to me simply bc it’s my favorite Amethyst episode to exist (well, maybe second to What’s Your Problem, but not by much). Moments like these are all the proof I need that they were right to fuse first.
Tumblr media
21.) Be Wherever You Are
This tune really just feels like an ode to who Steven was as a kid. Trapped on an island with no way home, and he’s just happy to be with his friends. The stars are beautiful and not oppressive. Also that one animatic with Lars and the Off Colors playing in the Homeworld Kindergarten to this music was iconic and made this song get stuck in my head for a solid month.
Tumblr media
22.) Familiar
I ADORE how the crew use bright neon colors to show how alien Homeworld can be. And Steven recognizing that the Diamonds treat him how the CGs used to, and how prepared he is to “fix” a broken family. It’s a soft, gentle tune about melancholy. Also the Pebbles are beautiful.
Tumblr media
23.) Let Me Drive My Van Into Your Heart
Such a cute little love ballad, but every time I listen to it now I just imagine the heart attack Rose must’ve had at the line “And if we look out of place/Well, baby, that's okay/I'll drive us into outer space.” like there’s a Vietnam war flashback if I ever heard one
Tumblr media
24.) What Can I Do?
I’m kind of neutral on this one? Rose and Greg both have great voices, but the song itself lacks many lyrics. I think it was definitely a good way to show Rose’s flaws in thinking.
Also, I’m shocked they managed cram that much vaguely sexual innuendo into two minutes, followed by how Not Hetereo that dance between Rose and Pearl was, and not get their asses chewed by it. You go guys.
Tumblr media
25.) Cookie Cat
I love a lot of the vibes this song has. The lyrics are so damn prophetic, but they also sound like the kind of weird 90s commercials I grew up on. It’s been like two decades since I saw the Shirley Temple commercial but I’ll be damned if I don’t remember “Animals crackers in my soup! Monkey and rabbits loop-de-loop.”
Tumblr media
26.) Giant Woman
I am. NOT the biggest fan of Steven’s original singing voice. I feel bad saying that, since it was just Zach Callison as a kid, but he never jived well with me for some reason. So I wouldn’t listen to this on the fly.
The song itself is still really good though, with all sorts of fun animation of Amethyst and Pearl being bitchy to each other. It’s a bit sad in hindsight to see tiny Steven trying to get his moms to get along. Ahh, season 1.
Tumblr media
27.) Strong in the Real Way
This song has SUCH a strong start. Pearl reflecting on Sugilite’s problems, but the show making sure to show us that Pearl’s lack of enthusiasm towards her also lends itself to jealousy as well as just general malaise. How much she cares about Steven, and wants him to grow up strong.
And then Steven just kinda. Ruins it? I appreciate his enthusiasm for tryna bulk up but to take what was starting as such a rich, personal song and broadcasting it to random strangers just makes me a bit sad. Almost a bit angry on her behalf?
Tumblr media
28.) That Distant Shore
I KNOW this is gonna create some discourse, but I’m just not the biggest Lapis stan. I love her voice. I love the visuals of the song. And I get why she felt afraid and needed to flee.
But Lapis never got to take responsibility for her own actions. And, in the end, the song feels hollow to me- because we all know she’ll never talk to anyone about it, know she’ll burst back in and destroy the barn, and no one will ever question it. I like Lapis a lot, but I feel like her arc never was fully finished. She never got help. She never learned to feel safe.
Tumblr media
29.) Dear Old Dad
I’ve yet to meet a single human being who likes this episode tbh. There’s some great discussion about what kind of parent Greg is from it, and what kind of dynamic he has with the Gems that he felt he had to fake an injury to hang out with his son. Honestly the first half was fine and dandy. It’s just that then they Greg just went out of his way to drag Steven away from missions and such. It never jived well with his character before or after.
Also, is it just me, or does Zach himself sound like he hates the song as he sings it? There’s no passion or heart in his voice. It sounds like they told him to read off cue cards and he did. Tom Scharpling’s best attempts didn’t save this one for being a skipper. But the episode, unfortunately, isn’t, so it gets a spot on here.

Pearlplusau animatic #1: The Great Divide (By Tripixle)
I believe this was the first animatic that introduced the AU.
Full video description and brief analysis below:
So in the beginning, we were given a glimpse of Pearl's original position, which most of us believed to be White Diamond's pearl. (This was before the canon origin of Pearl was released.)
Pearl had a brief eye contact with Pink Diamond's pearl while they passed by. There we can tell they probably weren't super close or anything, just Pink Pearl (who I will be calling her Coral from this point on) casually waving at another pearl like they were acquaintances in the same office.
After Pearl was assigned or "given" to Pink Diamond (without Coral getting hurt and replaced), she found her new diamond panicking over her burning throne while Coral was doing her best. Pearl realized right then and there what she was getting into for the rest of her gem life. She activated the sprinkler system and accepted her new role and post.
The next scene showed how Coral was a bit nervous around the new pearl. Her quick glances were noticed by the aloof-looking Pearl but her friendly handshake was finally started their relationship. (This is most likely how the two introduced each other similar to the short comic.)
We see Pink balancing on a giant ball with Coral by her side. Pearl came in, flipped out, and rushed to her now wobbling diamond. Coral was less worried but she joined in on the mayhem. Pink fell down and both pearls caught her. The trio, now laying on the floor, was stunned for a moment. Pearl got up and checked if her diamond was hurt in any way, but the diamond couldn't help herself and burst into laughter with Coral. It looked like Pearl was able to finally let herself go from her own strict codes and officially join the two as a group.
After Pink got her first colony, Earth, from Yellow and Blue, she had fun adventures with her pearls but found out how it was damaging the planet. She formed the rebellion starting with her two loyal friends.
After their encounter with the permafusion at the sky arena, the trio came to a rest and discussed their excitement. The trio accidentally fused from their shared excitement and startled the passing permafusion, who later joined in as Garnet.
The next scene cut to a battle with Homeworld gems, where we saw the Crystal Gems had the upper hand from the battle. Unfortunately, it was also the last battle as three diamonds launched a direct attack on the planet Earth. Rose realized what was truly going on and grabbed the closest gems to her, Coral and Garnet. The other closest member, Pearl, was too far for the leader to reach, but Coral was not one to give up on her companion. She screamed at Pearl, urging her to come over. She was finally within reach and into safety as the light shone bright green.
Skipping a few storylines, we see Rainbow Quartz being shown off to Greg the human. Coral looking a bit upset seeing Greg (or RQ?). We then move on to the talk of Greg and the leader of the Crystal Gems. Coral was found to be just as worried as the rest.
As Rose gave out her big announcement to the gems, Coral forced out a smile, trying to be happy for her leader while Garnet and Pearl took a different turn. Coral tried to keep the group together but failed to do so as everyone wanted to be alone.
Pearl was found weeping behind a stone hand by Coral. The two pearls wasn't sure whats going to happen, but they know they'll get through it when they have each other.
After that its a sequence of major events in rapid pace, from Steven joining the team, to Opals appearance, to the fight with Sugilite, to Coral's fusions with the gems, to Stevonnie, to the arrival, to the Malachite arch, to Coral's confrontation with Pink (Story for another time), to the Sardonyx arch, to Coral and Garnet's fusion, to the Rupphire wedding, and finally, to the Diamond days arch.
.
.
.
Aw man, I haven't seen this animatic for a super long time. So glad I was able to find it on youtube, which was re-uploaded by someone else after the original got deleted.
I'll be posting another animatic I found online, but the other two animatics are still nowhere to be found. To whoever's reading this, please take a look at your downloaded folder and see if you have the following animatics downloaded:
1. Listen before I go
2. Coral's part in "Here we are in the future"
If you've read to the end, I really appreciate it and hope you can help to spread the word about the missing animatics above. It will be a great help to me and the rest of the pearlplusau fans!
