10. Describe their first date.
If you asked them many years in the future about their first date, they would say it is the outing in Hungary in The means by which I waken. :P In a 'verse in which Daniel intentionally asks George on a date, it would be to a concert or a club with good music, and they might not dance but they would be energized by the atmosphere and talk and laugh long into the night, and Daniel would walk George to his door and kiss him goodnight.
12. Do they have many heated arguments? How do they smooth things over?
They don't have many arguments, but when they argue it tends to be over pretty fundamental differences, so the resolutions are not easy or satisfying. If I ever write a third fic in the "Darling, you're my second sun" 'verse (I'd like to, but I'm not committed to anything yet), it will probably include arguments, such as about Daniel's move to Red Bull or about navigating their impromptu coming-out-via-podium-kiss, and I will talk about some of the reasons for that below…
14. How do their personalities compliment each other? How do they clash?
Both George and Daniel are sensitive, driven to please, and high-strung/high-anxiety. These traits are all a good match because it means they have a lot of empathy for each other and generally understand what the other is going through (and it makes the sex pretty fantastic because they are so focused on pleasing each other). Even at their most anxious, they tend not to make each other spiral because that energy gets routed into trying to help, instead. So when it comes to pure personality, they are very stable and compatible.
So, instead, they clash in terms of values and beliefs. For instance, George strongly values loyalty and family, so when Daniel chooses Red Bull over Mercedes (pretend with me that he had equally tempting reserve driver offers from both teams), a part of George feels like Daniel is choosing Red Bull over him, not over his team. They also have opposing attitudes towards their public image; George works hard to project a mature, cultured, poised version of himself whereas Daniel wants to appear authentic, fun, and carefree. When it comes to public perception of them as a couple, George wants to be very careful about their messaging, and when Daniel says he doesn't care about what people think about them, George feels quite frustrated because he very much cares. This is a pretty major philosophical difference that takes them a couple years to actually agree on and have a workable plan for.

Before the World Begins by rilla (@flomps)- The first time I read this, I cried. Then again the second, third, fourth, etc. Lew and Dick meet in NY before Benning, before everything, and it's under very different circumstances. I love the characterization of Nix and Dick in this so much and the gentleness in the midst of all the smut. A TALENT!
Lancaster County by rachelelpillo - Technically not pre-war because this is an AU where it happens without them. It's bittersweet, but emphasis on the sweet. Teenage Dick and Nix and a whole summertime of falling in love.
Bicostal by dancinguniverse - I am a sucker for anything that starts at OCS. I love this and the telegrams and letters tucked within it.
Wartime
Bird Wedding by rachelelpillo - The way she writes anything really sounds like a summer day to me. This one is very understated and just wonderful if you want something that leaves you smiling. (Highly recommend you go through her work, last she posted was in 2010. :') )
And at Your Touch, I Burn by Muccamukk- CHRIST. A SICK!FIC. God I love this for so many reasons, one of them being just the incredible way Mucca describes the field exercise, the crawl and length of it. And Dick getting sick. Nix doing what he does. It's wonderful. It's perfect.
Vampire Overhead! by joissant - There's a little Vampire!Nix AU for you. In the midst of Bastogne and hunger, there is this and it's fucking fantastic.
love divine, all loves excelling by @flanneryoconnorfanfiction - The way my heart soared all throughout this fic. Religion, for many reasons is often the point of friction for Dick, and this one turns it over its head. It's reverent and (so) joyful and honestly, probably what God should feel like. There are not enough kudos-es in the world.
Post-War
Head Trip by @ezlebe - Two lines from this fic ring in my head daily, that's how much I loved every bit of it. And I mean who isn't a sucker for Operation Varsity-adjacent fics? Harry's in this so it's automatically just extra wonderful for me. I LOVE!! I absolutely love.
Like a Bird on the Wire by semperama - Them coming home without an established relationship is always a trope enjoy. Blanche Nixon is here being cheeky, and Dick is all smiley, Lewis is stressed the fuck out. It all makes for a wonderful get-together.
More than a Team by @mercurygray - I love reading about Ann Winters and I love seeing Nix and Dick navigate those familial relationships after the war. This is short and so, so sweet. Every bit as wonderful as the ice cream.
thyme and rosemary by @oatflatwhite - Yet another one where Ann Winters makes a wonderful cameo. Dick is trying not to be miserable and he keeps writing all these unsent letters to Lew. Featuring the cutest kitten ever.
Series
What Things We Have Heard Together by joissant (4 works) - Quite possibly required reading for Winnix enthusiasts. Feels like such a gift to be able to thread through so many points in their relationship and everyone else tangled in their orbit.

Transcript by Corvid Cordelia - LISTEN. If you love Easy Company, you love Winnix, Webgott, Spierton, etc, they're all here. It's such a treat for people who fell in love with everyone's personalities in BoB.
Women in Conversation by shiveringpinkala - Ann Winters tries to surprise her brother and it doesn't go quite as planned. Blanche is in this too so it makes it extra delightful. Love this fic.
Entendre by @thrillingdetectivetales - Harry Welsh has no fucking clue what Buck Compton is implying about Winters and Nixon but he's gonna find out. Again, I love Harry Welsh with all of me.
A special mention to String Quartet No. 14 by @oatflatwhite for a HS AU that had me kicking my feet and smiling all the way to the very last word.

An estimate of how many physical books I own: not as many as i used to! about four shelves' worth.
Favorite author: impossible to pick just one, but. Hilary Mantel. (A Place of Greater Safety AND Beyond Black AND Fludd AND the Cromwell books and those are just her greatest hits.... she HAS the range)

(oh my god I'm sorry for sitting on this FOREVER and I know I have at least one other ask from you that I've sat on for even longer OTL I promise I am not ignoring you, my brain just doesn't work!!)
1. Share your philosophy of smut. Why do you write it, and what does it mean to you?
I would honestly love to know from anyone who has read my smut what they think my philosophy is, haha, because I'm not sure I know. Like: in general, I write it because it's fun. It low-key turns me on and/or gives me happy comforting feelings. But I'd say that the reason I would include a sex scene in a specific part of a specific fic is to explore what the characters are seeking, emotionally or psychologically? And I know there's always ~discourse~ around whether sex scenes need to serve a purpose or whatever, but for me--well, yeah, every scene needs to serve a purpose and sex scenes don't get an exception, or to frame it another way... if it's not accomplishing SOMETHING, even if that's just more characterization, it's probably not a very good sex scene, lmao. I mean we joke about 2000 word blowjobs as character studies, but IMO they should reveal a lot about the characters, from their basic preferences and what they find pleasurable to a world of emotional layers.
(Fittingly, I was just interrupted by two raccoons fucking in my back yard. GET A ROOM, YA HOOLIGANS.)
Maybe The means by which I waken and Choice in my hands are good examples to talk about because they're in the same continuity? In The means, it resolves the mutual pining so it's meant to be a release of emotion or a bit cathartic? I actually don't think it does a good job of answering what they're seeking emotionally, though, other than they both want to be loved (if I were writing it now, I'd probably say that Daniel is seeking to be valued for something other than his day job). But I definitely did not come to that fic with as strong of an idea of what I wanted to SAY, I dashed it out in a three-week-long fugue state after having been in this fandom for like a month. I plead temporary insanity. Anyway, in Choice, on the other hand, the main sex scene is in the first half of the fic, and it's very squarely about Daniel seeking security but not knowing how to ask for it.
14. What are your favorite smut tropes?
I love love love it when two people are emotionally SO GONE FOR each other, and they haven't admitted this in so many words, but it ends up being expressed in the emotional intensity of the sex (or they say it accidentally or WHATEVER). I also love it when people are surprised--like, you?? want to have sex with ME???--and this adds extra joy to it. Also how can I not mention f1blr's own "guy wakes up with a vagina and has to have sex with the person he's in mutual pining with to change back", whatever the fuck it's called? But, also, trans characters. No explanation needed, that man has a pussy, get over it. (But explanation/exploration of the concept also welcome if done competently, of course.) I'm sure there are more worth mentioning, but it's 1am and I am going to sleep!

An estimate of how many physical books I own: where i live currently i have 132 physical books, but i also have some in storage and some in my parents house, so i would guess maybe about 220-250 maybeeee
Favorite author: i really don't have a stand out author...authors who have published my favouriteeee ever books have then produced really lackluster other works in my opinion....i feel like someone who never lets me down is ottessa moshfegh because u get what u get with her but i don't think i'd claim her as an outright favourite??
A popular book I've never read and never intend to read: truly anything by colleen hoover i am all for big popular books that get a large specific audience reading again, but we can do better by young girls and get them reading something sliiiightttllyyyy better (not shitting on anyone who enjoys colleen hoover, again they cater to a specific market and i think thats great, just not my cup of tea, but from what i've heard she's got a couple of questionable opinions)

Longest book I own: a suitable boy by vikram seth, 1474 pages!!!!!!!! and i read it in two weeks during the height of covid lockdown and it was EXCELLENT

Prettiest book I own: i have a really beautiful collection of charles dickens' books even though i'm not his biggest fan at all (loved david copperfield, enjoy a christmas carol, have read great expectations) but they were a gift and they do look really pretty on my shelves at my parents house!
A book or series I wish more people knew about: urmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm okay not to like talk about it again.............but at swim two boys............it was highly applauded when it was first published and was very popular but feel like it's popularity waned but its got two boys trying to resist falling in love and choosing to spend time together by learning to swim in the cold dublin sea.......the tumblr girlies would eat that up nowadays......also bewilderment by richard powers i think everyone should read that book 😌
Book I'm reading now: briefly, a delicious life by nell stevens....only about 50 pages in so far but good fun, a sapphic ghost love story from what i can tell so far so intriguing....
Book that's been on my TBR list for a while but I still haven't got around to it: the fifth season by n.k. jemisin.....tried reading it but wasn't in a sci-fi mood so only got one chapter in and then it has just.....sat there......for like.....two years......

Paperback, hardcover, or ebook?: paperback anyyyyyyyyyyy day of the week let me BREAK that spine let me make you look worn and loved and read let me chuck you into my bag and u barely add any weight!!! i dont hate a hardback but avoid buying them unless it is a book i am DESPERATE to read asap or it's at a good price but yeah i am a paperback girlie <3 don't own an e-reader apart from having the kindle app on my ipad so v rarely venture into e-books and i am sorry but nothing beats the feel of a book in ur hands like i need to feeeeel the pages

"Oh my god. Who is that?" Jack asks as she bends forward to stretch out her legs.
Daniel stumbles upon the stream by accident.
Pierre walks into the cafe around the corner from her new apartment and immediately gets the breath knocked out of her.
Daniel loves anal sex.
Trevor stumbles into the deli, sunglasses firmly on, somehow still drunk from the night before, Jack trailing behind her moaning about how hungover she is and the summer promises many more mornings like this at the Hughes lake house.

My thoughts: I clearly love to jump right into the fic without any set up to get you there, just right into the action of it. With the exception of the first one, you're just dropped right into the thing that sets the plot of the story in motion without much other introduction or getting to know the characters beforehand. This is true for both my AUs and my more canon based fics. This is probably why I am a good fic writer but wouldn't necessarily make a good novelist. I don't lay any groundwork, I jump directly into the story.

thank you @gratisdiamanten @boxboxlewis @officialmood @thewindowatkirkland and @flawlessassholes @semperama for tagging me to post the first part of my WIPs! I was a bit confused if it was meant to be first sentence or first little chunk, so i went with chunk! hope was okay!
this one is for my age play fic!
It starts with space.
Less and less of it between them in their bed every night. Max’s arms reaching for Daniel to wrap around his neck, to press his throat into the hard-soft hollow of his throat.
“I thought you didn’t like cuddling,” Daniel teases, even as he wraps his arms around Max, holding him tightly to him.
Max simply shrugs, makes a soft noise, something that sounds more like a sigh than a protest, but doesn’t say anything else.
Quiet is a part of it too, because mostly like this, Daniel ends up having entire conversations with only Max’s nods or hummed acknowledgements as answers. At first, he wonders if Max is trying to let Daniel, ‘talk himself out,’ but it soon becomes obvious that this something different entirely, because when Daniel pushes for an answer one time, Max shakes his head, burrowing further into the space underneath Daniel’s arm pit with a soft whine.
“Okay baby, you can sleep,” Daniel tells him with a startled laugh, fingertips tracing the shape of hearts up and down Max’s spine.

Blue Jaye kicks her feet underneath her knitted blanket, the colour of it’s-a-girl-pink. The delicate pastel is a stark contrast to the blue-purple smudges underneath Kelly’s eyes as she holds her, cradled carefully in her arms. On the TV behind where Max and Victoria stand, the highlight of Monza FP2 are playing, and as the commentators discuss Ricciardo’s recovery system failure, she makes an angry sounding noise.
“Maybe she doesn’t like to be stared at,” Victoria suggests, already turning her attention back to her phone, the brand new iPhone Papa brought for her. Her jaw is moving furiously around fuchsia chewing gum, and every so often there’s a loud crack as she blows and then pops a bubble. Even though Kelly asked her not to, because of course the noise will upset the baby.
Sitting down a little too hard next to Kelly, she jostles Blue Jaye, so maybe it is even on purpose. Max knows she didn’t like it when Papa told her it would be a girl.
“How would she know you are looking?” Kelly snaps, unhappy as she tries to settle Jaye again. “Her eyes are closed, Victoria.”
Victoria shrugs, not looking up from Twitter, and doesn’t say anything. Max doesn’t argue either, but of course he knows that you can tell when someone is standing over you, even with your eyes shut.
andddd dystopia au
It’s been eight months since Max last saw Daniel.
When it’s been this long, nights on end of going to sleep thinking about him, waking up from dreaming about him, but never seeing him, he worries about how much of Daniel is in his head and how much can possibly be real.
On his worst days, he’ll wonder if he’s real at all, if he’s not some figment of Max’s overactive imagination, something created in desperation of a life barely worth living. It’s happened before; drivers going mad.
It helps when he wedges his fingers down the side of his mattress, and gets to run his fingertips across the worn and yellowed edge of the only picture he has of Daniel. To just feel it there. Taking it out is something that he does less, it hurts to see the blinding white of his teeth, shark-like and bared at the camera in a grin. Torn from an old Red Bull Racing pamphlet, it’s not a real photograph, not like one Max would take of him himself on a camera that nobody else would get to see.
Then always, the doubt will linger, because in the crowded rooms full of watchful eyes, it goes like-
“Hey good lookin’,” Daniel drawls with a smirk and something in his eye that if Max didn’t know was exactly what Daniel was kept around for, he might think was real.

WIP Game

1. girl maxiel
"I'm not really a toy gal," Daniel says. "I mean, I am, but when I'm just trying to get myself off I'm kind of old fashioned, I guess? Simple fingers, you know. Traditional values."
She's such a knob. Max says, "Ok, well, you have nine other fingers, so. This is not a real problem."
"The other fingers don't feel right," Daniel says soulfully. "Please, Maxy?"
2. sir george & dragon alex
“Oh.” George takes another bite of chicken drumstick. It’s tender and salty and perfect, every bit as good as the food at King Toto’s table. “So why do the villagers hate you, then? I’m assuming you’re not constantly raiding their cattle byres or whatever, if you don’t really need to eat. And we’ve established that you don’t actually kill people.”
Well George, Alex says. I’m a dragon. I’m very big and scary, and also, if people throw things at me, I tend to discourage them in a fire-forward manner.
“Hmm.” George spears another potato. He’s using his dagger to eat, Alex’s hoard apparently not running to cutlery.
There was also the thing with the priest’s daughter, I suppose.
3. toxic george/toto/susie threesome
Susie brought the bottle and three glasses over to the kitchen table and poured, generously, the red splash of the wine rich and jewel-like in the warm light of the kitchen. The smell of whatever was cooking in the Aga mixed with the aroma of the wine: a not-unpleasant tannic scrape against back of his throat. He ran his tongue over his teeth.
“You will stay over tonight, won’t you?” Susie asked. She pushed a wineglass across the table towards him. “It’s miserable, I always think, trying to relax and have a nice time when you can only have one glass because you’re driving.”

4. How do you choose which fics to write?
I surrender myself to the fucking. hamster in its little hamster ball that rolls around inside my skull and controls where my attention goes.
There is truly no reason or logic behind what I get motivated to work on; if I'm lucky, I at least consistently go back to the same one until it's done. I've only been bouncing between two different documents the last few weeks, so... we're getting there.
6. What’s the last line you wrote?
Already answered for the main WIP, but from my secondary one:
When Seb has poured the chocolate and dropped a big marshmallow into each mug, they settle on the couch in front of the fireplace, and Mick allows himself to lean against Seb’s side (after his initial surprise fades, Seb’s body relaxes and Mick is pretty sure he’s smiling).
10. Do you work on multiple wips or stick to one fic at a time?
Basically answered by the above--I usually hop between a couple at any given time, sometimes more than that. It is probably not ideal, but! ADHD! Sometimes the only way to get anything done is to stop fighting it.
