im gonna be talking like theyre all a little older cuz if they get pets they're all living on their own or whatever SO.

seto and mary have 1 million dogs cats birds etc etc they foster animals🔥🔥🔥 mary also has a service dog bc she suffers from hallucinations, panic attacks and her very bad social anxiety soooo. yeah. doggy. and seto has like 3 dogs that are just his dogs but otherwise they have a bunch of fosters that come and go :3

kidomomo are living together because i say so. they have one or two cats and some like. amphibian or reptile. idk. bc momo likes it but kido's like ☹️ but ok momo likes it so kido puts up with it. they also foster some cats here and there when seto needs room

kano i imagine also fosters kitty cats that come from seto but he's a lot more into it than kido is. i think both kido and kano are cat people and help seto when he runs out of space or has cats that arent good with other animals or need more special attention since cats are generally lot more fuzzy than dogs. i think kano takes the cats that are in the worst shape while kido doesn't bc theyre a lot more squeamish+get super attached very easily (kido's cats are probably failed fosters) so kano is always giving kitties flea baths and taking care of injuries and all that... he also has like 3 cats of his own :3 honestly they're also failed fosters lol. harutaka also get their cat from seto but it's not a failed foster they went there specifically to get her 🔥🔥🔥

shintaro of course has BUNNY!!!! super spoiled bunny. ayano i imagine she has a doggy too. a super huge dog. i think shintaro suffers with ayano's big dog because he's not a dog person. or a cat person. hes a bunny person. anyways he can't deal with dogs jumping on him. ayano's probably awful at keeping her dog in check so it's the kinda dog that's just tackling you and licking you all the damn time. sadly it adores shintaro and it's always knocking him over... also kano's cats also like him and are always napping on him. or scratching him.

hibiya and hiyori i hc they move to the city for hs. hibiya lives with kidomomo and hiyori lives with ayano. hiyori fucking HATES ayano's dog she literally wants it dead she's a dog hater. hibiya also hates cats and is scared of his kitty roommates. if they're college age i imagine they move in together (i imagine theyre just friends) but they dont have pets even though hiyori really wants a cat because she knows hibiya cant stand cats. but i think after years of living with kidomomos cats he's ok with hiyori getting one bc he knows how much she loves kitties lol

The story behind this one is actually my favourite classical composer story of all time: Rachmaninoff desperately wanted to become friends with his fellow composer Stravinsky, but wasn't quite sure how to break the ice. He heard Stravinsky liked a certain type of expensive honey, and just randomly showed up at Stravinsky's house in the middle of the night with a big ol' jar of honey. It worked. They became friends.

BUT ALSO THIS IS LIKE, PEAK BAKURA BEHAVIOUR, ISN'T IT?! (as I am rapidly adding more red yarn and thumbtacks to my 'tenuous connections between YGO and classical music' corkboard, a large hook comes to drag me off stage)

Hence this excerpt but with a more Jounouchi-esque food substituted:

When the buzzer in Jounouchi’s flat goes off at midnight, he’s not sure what to expect. The only people who ever drop by unannounced are Honda and Anzu. Anzu has a key and has never once in her life bothered with the buzzer, and Honda only comes at ungodly hours of the morning to clean his apartment and lecture him the entire time while Jounouchi watches TV in a half-awake stupor. “Hello?” Jounouchi says into the receiver. “Hello,” a soft voice returns. A pause. “Bakura? The hell are you doing here at midnight?” Bakura is silent for a moment, and then: “Do you like shrimp?”

I'll put the next one under a cut 'cause this is getting long, but it's a YGODM rewrite where Seto's mind crush goes. Very differently lol

Anyone who knows me probably remembers this one 'cause I've been poking away at this for actual years 💀 but very roughly (??!) it's a YGODM rewrite where Mokuba is Seto's half-brother and they don't grow up together. So when Seto gets mind-crushed he doesn't have any reason to 'put the pieces back together.' He's in his mind crush coma for two full years, and then Isono manages to find Mokuba in foster care. Yuugi & Atem's relationship is really different in this one too! It's a much slower burn to Friendship™️and there's more 'oh god an arson obsessed ghost is in my body' fear and paranoia. Basically just me enjoying dark freaky Season 0 vibes for way longer and easing into the whole plot later on when the kids are college-aged.

Anzu had completely forgotten herself, and was examining Kaiba with open fascination - and revulsion. She moved closer to him hesitantly. “Can he...can he hear us?” she asked, her voice small. The maid Okazaki was already nodding enthusiastically, but Isono slowly shook his head. “There’s really no way to know, Mazaki-san.” Yuugi knew that the answer was more complicated than the question had been. Kaiba could hear and respond to noise, certainly; the whole reason he wasn’t hooked up to a mess of tubes in a hospital bed was because he could eat with assistance, and raise and lower his arms obediently when asked to in order to facilitate clothes-changes and cleaning. The question was whether he understood any of those noises in a meaningful way, and whether he ever would again. It had already been two years. The outlook didn’t seem so good, these days. Anzu gingerly sat down in the chair closest to Kaiba. She took another long, hard look at his vacant face. Her expression slowly began to shift. Pity. An emotion that Yuugi couldn’t allow himself to feel towards Kaiba. To pity the frail, twisted boy before him was to condescend to him, to disrespect their relationship. Yuugi had done this to him, and so he owed it to Kaiba to remember him as he had been - tall and powerful with a loud, strident voice - vicious, calculating, eyes shining like the cruelly sharp edge of a diamond - alive. Anzu reached out and gently, gently laid her hand on top of Kaiba’s. “Hi, Kaiba-kun,” she said softly. “We brought your diploma.”

Her studio, nestled in a quiet corner of Domino City, was more than just an artist's workspace. It doubled as an activity center for children, where creativity flourished alongside the laughter of little ones. The walls adorned with both finished and ongoing projects, it was a space filled with the vibrant energy of artistic expression. Kisara found joy not only in crafting her own pieces but also in fostering a love for art in the hearts of the youngsters who attended on a weekly basis a day out of the week.

Kisara reached into her bag and pulled out a minimalistic business card that had her art studio name, her number and the address. “Whenever you are ready please let me know.”

Hiii, what a great question! (because it gives me an excuse to ramble on about my half-baked blueshipping ideas. As if I needed an excuse, but y'know *shrug*)

I mean, I have about a million different hcs bc I have about as many unstarted (or at least unfinished) fics w/ different concepts stewing in my brain at all times, but I do have some main hcs that I tend to come back to, so I'll do my best to summarise those. (EDIT: goodness, this didn't turn out as a summary, but more like a whole ass novel in and of itself. I'll put it all under a read more below, and bless you if you have the patience to read all of it lol)

They meet by chance, but not really by chance, you know, bc fate. So they're destined to be reunited, but it's not like either of them knows about the other's existence or try to seek each other out, in one scenario or other they just happen to run in to each other. That's when the dramatics ensue though, bc obviously they recognise each other on some deeper level and have this connection, but neither of them knows why and it's strange and confusing and mysterious (in some fics I do have Seto recognise her though, bc he's seen her in the memory world and everything, and is somewhat aware of their past. Kisara is unaware of this, but sometimes I do write her as experiencing flashes of the past either before or after (or both) meeting Seto again in the present). (I have also toyed with the idea of Seto being obsessed with finding her again after everything that went down in the memory world, perhaps even crossing dimensions to do so DSOD style).

I definitely see Seto as being rather awkward and clumsy around Kisara at first, bc he's so inexperienced with relationships as well as emotionally repressed, so in awe of her but at the same time so afraid of what will happen if he lets his guard down. He'd probably try to purposefully distance himself at first bc feelings are scary and uncomfortable and he doesn't want to risk letting his cool, unbothered mask slip, but ultimately wouldn't be able to stay away. As I wrote in an earlier post, I see Seto as someone who uses his cocky attitude to hide deep-seated feelings of self-loathing, insecurity and inadequacy, and I think that would also make him hesitant to get close to Kisara, bc he thinks if he lets her too close then she'll see who he really is, and then she'll hate him too.

In the same vein, I tend to write Kisara as someone who has also experienced abuse as a child (possibly also an orphan, raised in a foster family or similar) and who can therefore relate to Seto and help him work through some of his trauma-related issues. While she's had a different trauma response, making herself gentle and kind and destructively selfless instead of self-centered and abrasive, she can understand why Seto is the way he is and thus have greater patience with it (though I definitely also imagine her as someone who doesn't hesitate to tell him off when he's being too much of an asshole to people, lol)

Once they do get together, Seto is very protective of Kisara (bc either consciously or unconsciously, he is aware of having lost her before, and is terrified of doing so again) and she thinks he's needlessly fussy over her, though she puts up with it to a degree bc she knows it's bc he loves her (also let's face it, with Mokuba being kidnapped left and right, maybe it's not entirely unreasonable to keep an extra eye on the people close to Seto lmao).

On the flip side, Kisara fusses a great deal over Seto when she thinks he's overworking and not taking care of himself properly (which is most of the time), and stubbornly makes sure that he actually takes time off sometimes, to actually get some rest and spend time with her and Mokuba (to the point of literally driving in to physically coax him out of the office).

Kisara is not a duelist, and while she does her best to learn all the rules and intricacies of the game and is always at the side of the arena cheering Seto on, she maintains that it's a good thing she doesn't play herself, bc it means Seto doesn't have the option to respond with "duel me" every time they have a conflict (also no conflicting rivalry feelings).

People often assume that Kisara must have the patience of an angel to put up with Seto's behaviour all the time, and while she definitely is a person with a great deal of tolerance, she doesn't actually need it that much. Her mere presence has a calming effect on Seto, even when he's at his most stressed-out and frantic, and he's usually a lot mellower and gentler with Kisara than people on the outside ever see him.

Kisara did not grow up rich, and isn't really comfortable with having other people do things for her like cooking, cleaning, driving etc. Seto is perpetually confused as to why Kisara insists on doing everyday tasks herself despite there being staff available to do those things, while Kisara is shocked to learn of all the basic stuff that Seto doesn't know how to do bc he's never had to do them.

Okay, I'm starting to realise I could go on forever, so I'm gonna stop myself now. Kudos to you if you've stuck with me this far!

like not eve talking fanon/hc straight cannon and also genral Egyptian belief with the Soul, being made up of many parts. (seems to depend on the dynasty anywhere from like 5 or more)

Ka- a bit more vague, frequently translated as double which actually isn’t correct as there’s really no exact Egyptian definitian that can be used for the word/ has many meanings. Simply it’s just another part of the soul/ what’s viewed to make up a person. With a seeming strong connection to like fostering emotions and manifesting in the physical world

(So I’d say the spirity monsters are a good reflection of it fostered by emotion and with the ability to also have agency in the physical world)

Ba- Personality

Shut- Shadow

Sekhem- Form

(I’ve also seen listed Ib heart)

Out of all of these it’s especially the Ka- and how even if there’s no physical body the Ka would remain living seperate.

And in away that’s kind of how Kisara is (or how I interpreted it) in that if her physical body is killed she lives one in spirit as the Dragon.

However on the flip it still does need a physical host to survive (Much in how she comes to reside with Set/Seto and also kinda what Aknadin’s plan is)

Oh and also how with everyone else with their Ka summon is connected to a physical stone tablet (that I’m pretty sure if it was destroyed and it was your own and not a different spirit beast summoned you’d be dead maybe)

All this to say idk kinda like how they’re tied to their weapons and I mean yeh they can still get hurt but so long as the physical weapon isn’t damaged they’d remain I guess?

idk if I’m even making sense or if I’m just the ‘I connected 2 things’ “you didn’t connect shit’ meme

okay wait hold on seto kaiba babysitting??

yes, haha. i was pretty into yugioh fanon in my early teens due to my best friend and wrote this fic where Seto, in a big accident, saves this two year old after the mother dies in front of him (the mother being an ex of seto's i think?) and so then he begins fostering so he can solve the mystery of who killed the mother and why, but Seto with a two-year old was hilarious and Mokuba's running commentary even funnier.

It's one I've liked enough that i've kept it, despite it being written in my pre-teens, so I figure I should finish it one day lol... that being said it would involve re-watching so much and i rarely have time

what are ur biggest gripes with the way the current fandom characterizes the mekatrio? besides like. oversimplifying seto and stuff. asking bc ur the no. 1 expert imo & i want to hear ur thoughts

tq for this ask and giving me a reason to blabber abt the mekatrio 😏 but also aw you dont want me to talk about seto mischaracterization for the nth time? :( im joking lol, and also im not quite sure what ur quantifying by 'current fandom' so im just gonna go over whatever recent portrayals ive seen from both english and non-english speaking fans 👍 with seto stuff excluded ofc bc i have a whole tag for tht.

my general gripes with overall mekatrio portrayal:

- perpetuating the incorrect notion that the mekatrio were adopted by the tateyamas. they werent, this was a mistranslation by the official translators. the terms used throughout kgpr to describe their relationship to the tateyamas has always been 'fostered'. and ofc, ive only seen this happen in english-speaking spaces (bc i primarily engage with the english-speaking fanbase, and we often work from the translations and not the direct text).

another issue i take with this is that ive seen some english-speaking fans express their dismay at the fact that the mekatrio were only ever fostered, as though adoption wouldve been 'better'. this is something i find very troubling, bc the vibe i get is that theyre implying adoption is like, more intimate, more 'valuable', in a sense, than merely being fostered. and it feels very rooted in their own cultural understanding of fostering/adopting kids, whatever their culture may be.

to me, this feels like a very insensitive view to have, bc the matter of fostering and adopting children is way more complex than "adoption > fostering". adopting a child is more than just making them a part of your family, its about legally and materially severing the bonds between a child and their birth parents. its bc of this nuance that adoption is uncommon in several countries, like japan, and is also why adoption is forbidden in islam. this is also why adoption has been used as a tool of genocide. im not trying to say that 'adoption is evil and bad and its good that the mekatrio werent adopted' etc etc etc, but i wish fans would consider the different cultural aspects of this matter b4 speaking about it.

- having the mekatrio use their first names with each other. eruhefjksjfhjks... its not like completely wrong to do or anything, but i just find it so weird, bc they literally only ever do this with one another in the anime. in the manga and novels, they hv never referred to one another by their first names at any point in time. never!!! when they first meet each other, after being fostered together, after ayaka dies, after ayano dies, and during the present day plot, they have always consistently referred to one another by their last names. the mekatrio using their first names with one another has always been an Anime-Exclusive Thing. so i find it weird that fans hv adopted this tidbit into their overall kgpr interpretation, when its something that's only exclusive to the anime. it would be like if someone adopted mca azami's massive fucking house into their interpretation, or kido still wearing the clothes she died in at the tateyama residence, which are two other weird things that are anime-exclusive.

also this is just my personal headcanon/interpretation, but i would imagine that the mekatrio using their last names with one another would hv a deeper underlying meaning, considering that the three of them are orphans, and have lost the people they had shared these family names with.

- shipping the mekatrio with one another. this is a no-brainer, i dont really think i need to explain this one. its way less common in english-speaking spaces than it used to be, but unfortunately its still just as popular in japanese spaces, knkd being the most prominent one 😑

- denying that theres knkd in canon texts. andd this is smth ive only seen in english-speaking spaces. ive seen some fans make it seem as though there isnt any romantic knkd implications in canon, and that the shippers are just weird and delusional, but as much as id also like for that to be the case, it unfortunately isnt true 😮‍💨 chp 38 of the manga very strongly implies that kano has a crush on kido, and kano's pov in novel 8 practically confirms this. and im too lazy to find proof of this, but i remember there used to be some fans (back in like 2016 - 2019) who believed that the knkd in the manga was just satou mahiro's doing, but no, the manga manuscripts were written by jin, meaning that entire stupid convo between kano and mary in chp 38 was completely jin's doing. this means that, yes, kano does (unfortunately) canonly hv a crush on kido.

now, just bc this is canon, doesnt mean i expect ppl to respect or adhere to it. i sure as hell dont, and i never will, the same way i wont ever respect hibiya's extremely dehumanizing obsession with hiyori, or the very questionable manner that shintaro's fetishes are handled. but its irksome to see people spread the idea that it doesnt even exist, and that the shippers are deluding themselves instead, bc that essentially absolves jin of his very real and very shitty writing. like the truth of the matter is that it very much exists, which fucking sucks, but we can disregard it the same way we disregard the other shitty aspects of kgpr. but we shouldnt act like it doesnt exist at all bc 1.) gotta hold jin accountable for his shit, and 2.) it does a disservice to newer fans who may then think this rancid shit doesnt exist in kgpr, when in reality it does. with that said, the shippers are still fucking weird for shipping it. just cuz theres canon romantic knkd implications, doesnt suddenly make all the familial context surrounding them disappear. both the shippers And jin deserve shit for supporting this nasty shit 😑

my gripes with kido specifically

- portraying her as blushy blushy shy tsun tsun AHHHHH WHATEVER BULLSHIT. i see this happen very often w non-english speaking fans. i hate when people draw her all flustered and blushing in a humiliating context. i hate it when she's drawn in a skirt or any feminine clothing. i hate all of that shit... it feels very voyeuristic and misogynistic to treat a female character who uses a masculine pronoun and presents herself androgynously in such a manner. its disgusting. and i hope that all the writers and artists who do this di-*a truck drives past*

- overlooking kido's autistic-coding in favor of projection. now this is a gripe i have specifically with the english-speaking fanbase. this fandom has a tendency to project traits onto characters, traits which are only very loosely based in canon, if not at all. im not gonna beat around the bush; im mainly talking about how fans project their sexuality/gender/neurodivergency/other identity marker headcanons onto characters. this is not unique to the kgpr fandom, nor is it a recent occurrence. people have been doing this type of thing all the way back in like 2013 - 2014, and i used to do this too, but grew out of it as i got older.

im not saying this is a bad thing to do. i understand the merits and joy that comes from it, and that it's something thats essentially harmless. but what i do take issue with is that fans will project all sorts of traits onto characters with little to no basis in canon, but will then overlook characters who are actually coded a certain way. what im talking abt specifically is kido's autistic-coding. she doesnt just have one or two autistic traits which a person could then headcanon her as autistic. no, in canon, she is very much and very downright autistic-coded. since she was a child, she canonly had difficulties communicating, to the point where she needed to see a doctor;

she uses music as a way to disconnect from her senses;

her difficulties with communicating comes out in the form of aggression towards others;

and she's 'eccentric': wearing multiple layers in the blazing summer, speaking bluntly and honestly at all times, using non-standard pronouns for herself, and the list goes on and on... and like Never Lost Word is literally a whole song about her struggles with communication. all of these behaviors are reminiscent of a person with autism, which itself is a communication disorder. if she isnt autistic-coded, then i dont know what is.

but yeah, it annoys me when people project traits onto characters with little to no basis in canon, but then overlook characters who are actually canonly coded with a certain trait, like kido. like it feels ridiculous to me when a fan like, looks for characters they can project neurodivergency onto, but then ignore the actual neurodivergent-coded characters. if youre going to talk at all about these characters' identities, then can you please not overlook kido's very autistic-coded identity... thank you...

my gripes with kano specifically

- saying that kano has it the worst out of the mekatrio. hahahaha...... my main problem with this idea of 'kano has it worst' is that its often coming from people who are either ignoring, disregarding, or dont fully know about kido's and seto's backstories. and i get why this is the case, kido's and seto's backstories are almost entirely novel-exclusive, and most ppl dont read the novels. not to mention that their songs, Mekakushi Code, Never Lost Word, and Shounen Brave, are way more optimistic than the mental breakdown that is Yobanashi Deceive. but in spite of how things may seem on the surface, all three of them have had it pretty bad in the past, and still have it pretty bad in the present day plot. just a brief summary of their traumatic backstories (taken from the novels, but it applies to most routes):

kano: had a physically abusive mom growing up, and was murdered alongside with her. was passed from home to home, and had the police called on him bc of his powers. was discarded into a facility. his new mom passes away. his sister tells him that their father is possessed and plans to kill their entire family, and asks him to go to school in her place. she later kills herself in front of him, and he is made to masquerade as her corpse. he is then blackmailed into secretly working for his possessed father for the next two years.

kido: her birth mother passes away. she gets whisked into living with her father and stepsister whom she had never met before. she lives with them for at least 7 months, and in this time she is never let out of the residence, and is stuck with servants who berate her and look down on her. her father then drugs her and her stepsister, locks them inside of the basement, murders all of the servants, prepares the house to be destroyed, and then comes downstairs to kill her stepsister. kido has to kill him in self-defense. the house then burns down, killing her and her stepsister. for the rest of her life, she uses concealing eyes on herself without realizing it, in order to repress the traumatic memories of her father. she gets discarded into a facility. much later in life, she lose a mother and sister once again.

seto: grew up in a facility where he was ostracized and bullied by children who were cruel enough to kill a dog. died alongside said dog. spent over a year in this facility all alone, listening to the thoughts of these cruel children who hated him. later in life, he learns that him and his family would be murdered in the future, and never shares this burden with anyone. his mom passes away. he learns his father is possessed and plans to murder the entire family, but again, never confides this to anyone. his sister kills herself.

so like... can you really say that kano has it the worst? if you still think so after knowing all this, then thats fine. but please evaluate kido's and seto's backstories properly if youre going to say so... 🙏

- misunderstanding kano's powers. specifically, saying that:

1.) his powers are cancelled out by pain, and

2.) he mastered his powers earlier than kido and seto.

im planning to write a more detailed post about kano's powers some other day, so ill keep it very brief here. but regarding point 1, in the present day plot at least, its very explicitly stated in 'Today, On The Street' from novel 5 that no, pain no longer cancels out kano's powers:

as for point 2... this is difficult to disprove without going on an insanely long tangent, so.... i wont do that. and will instead just leave these panels from chp 27 here:

yeah, im aware im not really disproving those two points that much here... but its like i said, to do that, id need to explain loads of things, things which i plan to explain in a seperate and more detailed post about kano's powers. his powers are a lot more complex than it initially seems. once i finish that post, ill update this answer and link it here.

- depicting kano as a sociable and outgoing guy. he is not!! he's very shy!

- i dont like kanoshin lol. dont get me wrong, i completely get why ppl would ship them. like i always burst out laughing whenever i reread novel 7, cuz i always end up seeing how gay these fuckers are acting:

with that said, i still dont like kanoshin bc 1.) i simply dont think theyre a good pair, and 2.) i think the resentment in their dynamic was poorly resolved. i have many issues with the way shintaro as a protagonist is handled throughout kgpr (especially in the novels), as he is often overshadowing other characters Because He Is The Protagonist. and my dislike of kanoshin's dynamic has to do with that. also another thing i dislike abt the fandom's portrayal of kanoshin, is that i dont like it when ppl make it seem more toxic than it actually is. like i wish they had a spicy feud with one another, but no, novel 7 has made it so they forgive each other like... immediately. which im not a fan of, but oh well. but ultimately im not too bothered by what kanoshin fans are doing, bc ive had kanoshin blacklisted for the past 4 years and it will continue to remain that way 👍

and yeah! thats my list of gripes with the kgpr fanbase's characterization of the mekatrio! (excluding seto). its very short and not at all immensely detailed because i am soooo normal about these characters (lying). theres probably a few things i missed like little 'they would not fucking say that' type of things, but i think these are my main gripes. yippee!
