The sport combining skis, snow and thoroughbred racehorses

The hardy skiers travel at frightening speeds, using just their voice and a set of reigns to guide the horses around the icy track.

The unusual sport is considered the showpiece event of the White Turf races — a wintery festival held at the upmarket ski resort of St. Moritz.

The sport requires the ability to blend skiing aptitude with a high-level of horsemanship.

“During the race you need a really strong voice,” two-time race winner Valeria Holinger told CNN Sport. “Only by shouting can you make the horse go faster”.

“There is amazing speed and I love the adrenaline.”

‘You have to be really brave’

Aspiring competitors must wait until they’re 18 before being allowed to participate in the event.

Even then, drivers — as they’re known — must pass fitness tests and grueling theory exams — for good reason, too.

Not only are they traveling at incredible speeds, there is also the added danger of fully grown thoroughbreds trampling on the skis.

In addition, the galloping hooves kick up huge amounts of snow and ice which crash into the legs of the skiers behind.

“You have to be really brave,” said Holinger, who became the first female winner of the race.

“There is a lot of kick back from your own horse and a lot of speed.”

Such unique threats call for unique protection. Drivers are required to use face masks to keep the snow out of their eyes and wear body armor under their ski suits.

Despite the obvious dangers, the truly unique event attracts thousands of spectators every year.

“You definitely have to try it,” Holinger said.

Futni vagy nem futni? Ez itt a kérdés

http://huskyblanka.com/Valószínűleg az egyik leggyakoribb kérdése azon gazdiknak, akik szeretnének elkezdeni futni a kölyökkutyájukkal, az a MIKOR? Mikor lehet velük elkezdeni futni?

Sajnos nincsen arra egy bevett «recept», hogy hogyan is kell csinálni, de úgy döntöttem, hogy megosztom mi hogyan kezdtünk bele Kutével. Azonban szeretném már az elején leszögezni, hogy ez egy nagyon egyéni dolog, minden attól függ, hogy az adott kiskutya hogyan fejlődik fizikálisan és mentálisan, az is elképzelhető, hogy a következő kölykünkkel még mi is máshogy fogunk majd belekezdeni.

Kute hét hónapos, s hazudnék ha azt mondanám nincs jó pár kilométer a talpában. Négy hónapos kora óta tart velünk rövid, könnyű futásainkon. Nagyon-nagyon rövid távokkal kezdtünk, miközben folyamatosan rajta tartottuk a szemünket. Ha elkezdett mellettünk futni ahelyett hogy felfedezne, akkor tudtuk, hogy elfáradt, ideje megállni. Ez mondjuk egyetlen egyszer történt csak meg, viszont alig 2 kilométer után, úgyhogy érdemes fejben tartan, hogy mindig oda kell figyelni, még akkor is, ha a távot rövidnek és könnyűnek ítéljük meg.

Mostanra már 45-60 perceket tud futni, valószínűleg többet is tudna, ha hagynánk. Szinte végig elől megy, nem marad le. Ha sétálni megyünk, akkor is szabadon van, s szerintem ilyenkor sokkal többet fut, mint amikor velünk tart egy átlagos edzésünkre, mert sokkal hosszabban kell visszaszaladnia hozzánk. Emellett -ahogy Mikal mondja- jól edzi magát, mert végig a susnyásban rohangál, nem az úton, a könnyű terepen. Ez az egyik legfőbb oka, amiért már ilyen fiatal korában elkezdett velünk “edzeni”, meg kell tanulnia szabadon futnia, hogy majd a jövőben megfelelően tudjuk tréningezni. Mikal az új szezont mindig állóképesség építéssel kezdi a kutyáknál, aminek fontos része a szabadon futás. Ha nem kezdené elég korán, a behívás is nehezebben menne sok szituációban. Kute ha valakivel találkozik, akkor visszajön hozzánk, pusztán azért, mert kölyökként bizalmatlanabb volt, s ezt megszokta. Egy kamasz, “tökös” kutya már valószínűleg másképp reagált volna. Ugyanígy az elágazásoknál is odafigyel, bevár, s azt is megszokta, hogy hisztisek leszünk ha a lábunk alatt van. Persze ezeket séta alatt is tökéletesen lehet gyakorolni, tudatosítani. Nálunk gyakorlatilag nincs különbség a kettő között. Amikor futásról beszélek, nem úgy kell elképzelni hogy mi elől megyünk, s ő lohol utánunk. Kute szinte végig elől halad, a saját tempójában, függetlenül attól, hogy mi mit csinálunk mögötte. Ez nagyon fontos, ha a kiskutya folyamatosan csak utánunk tud futni, akkor valószínűleg túl fiatal még az ilyesfajta “edzéshez”. 

Egy másik dolog, amire rá kellett jönnünk, hogy Anti túl sok Kutének. A kölyök nagyon akarta követni őt, de Anti sokkal gyorsabb és erősebb volt, úgyhogy Kutének nagyon kellett tepernie. Emiatt egy ideig nem engedtük őket együtt futni, de mostanra Kute már hozzáerődödött Antihoz. Ezen felül nagyon önálló kiskutya is lett, a saját feje után megy sokszor, nem másokat követ.

Szóval Kute nagyjából 3 hónapja fut szabadon, fokozatosan növelve a távot 1,5 km-ről 60 percre (nagyjából 8-10 km). Csak a könnyed edzéseinkre visszük magunkkal, nem csak miatta, hanem mert mi is jobban szeretünk a futásra koncentrálni a keményebb edzéseinken, s fontos hogy Kutére is oda tudjunk figyelni ha velünk van (nem fárad, nem megy túl messzire), úgyhogy a legjobb kompromisszum, ha nem visszük magunkkal, hacsak nem élvezheti teljes figyelmünket. 

Egyelőre nem dolgozott hámban (egyetlen egy alkalom kivételével, ahol kb 20 métert skijöringezett Mikallal - szerintünk fel se tűnt neki), őszintén, hám se nagyon volt rajta egy-két alkalom kivételével, de nem zavarta, mondjuk gondoltuk hogy nem fogja, mert kabátot már hordott kiskorában is. Persze ha valaki bizonytalan, hogy hogy fogja a kiskutyája fogadni a hám viselését ráadhatja, miközben ügyel arra, hogy csak pozitív dolgokkal kapcsolja össze, s sose tiltsa meg a kölyöknek hogy húzzon benne. 

Nem sietünk sehova, Kute még fiatal és szépen lassan növöget, úgyhogy egyelőre várunk a húzómunkával. Ezáltal Kute várhatóan skijöring közben szerzi majd meg az első tapasztalatait, az ünnepi pihenésünk alatt. Izgalmas tél vár rá és ránk, az egyszer biztos!

A Look At The Incredible GP Ice Race – Would You Ski Behind A Race Car?

This remarkable series of images were taken by photographers Marc Holstein and Christine Gabler who attended the 2020 running of the GP Ice Race.

What Is The GP Ice Race?

The GP Ice Race takes place in Zell am See, a small Alpine town south of Salzburg in Austria. The ice races date back to 1937 and they ran until 1974, the races were restarted in 2019 for the first time since the mid-1970s and it ran again in early February 2020.

The images you see here are from the 2020 event and they showcase the two most popular aspects of the race – modern and vintage racing cars battling it out on the ice, and the sport of “skijoring” – when skiers are towed by cars around the circuit at speed. Over the past two years the event has grown significantly both in attendance and online popularity, the 2020 GP Ice Race saw a full entry book of 130 racers and 2021 is already sounding like it’s going to break the 2020 attendance figures.

Once of the key highlights of the GP Ice Race is being able to see genuinely iconic race and rally cars being driven in anger on the ice, cars like the Audi Sport Quattro S1 piloted by legendary World Rally Champion Walter Röhrl. The race includes classes for a number of different vehicle types including two wheel drive and four wheel drive cars, buggies, and vintage cars including race prepared Porsche 356s, 911s, a Red Bull NASCAR, a Volvo P1800, VW Beetles, Saabs, Fiat 500s, Trabants, Mini Coopers, and even a Corvette.

The Sport Of Skijöring

The word Skijöring comes from the Norwegian word “skikjøring”, which means “ski driving”. It’s been a popular means of winter travel in Scandinavia for hundreds of years. The indigenous Sami people of northern Scandinavia would harness reindeer and ski along behind, often at significant speed.

By the late-19th and early-20th century Skijöring behind dogs and riderless horses were a popular winter sports across Europe, it was even included as an exhibition sport at the 1928 Winter Olympic Games held in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

Of course once automobiles were commonplace it was only a matter of time before some enterprising winter sport enthusiasts tied a rope the the back of a car (or motorcycle) and tried their hand at motorised Skijöring. It would be motorised Skijöring that would find a home in the GP Ice Race from 1937 onwards.

“Travelling down to Zell Am See we were not sure what to expect. Our first impression was jaw-dropping – we were simply amazed by the amount of exotic vintage vehicles that came together to race on the ice.

There were countless Porsche 356, Audi Quattros and even small cars like an East German Trabant, Fiat Cinquecento, or a Classic Mini Cooper. The thing I was personally looking forward to was the skijöring. This is basically a skier, holding being towed behind the car with a rope – one of the skiers told us that they hit 110km/h on straight.

The vibes were great and it was great to experience such an open minded community. Our personal highlight in terms of cars would be the vintage Rothmans Rally Porsche, the vintage 911 with an amazing Warhol like pop-art paint-job, and of course all of the 356s racing on the ice.”

Spektakuläre Szenen in Österreich: Beim GP Ice Race in Zell am See wagten sich Formel-E-Teamchampion Daniel Abt und DTM-Champion René Rast mit ihren Rennautos bei Temperaturen weit unter dem Gefrierpunkt auf Schnee und Eis. Ebenfalls für Audi Sport im Einsatz: Rallyelegende Walter Röhrl und Freestyle-Skistar Benedikt Mayr.

Diese Bilder gehen um die Welt: Beim erfolgreichen Revival der traditionellen Eisrennen in Zell am See begeisterte ein Trio von Audi-Rennwagen die zahlreichen Zuschauer. Daniel Abt pilotierte den Audi e-tron FE04, mit dem das Team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler in der Saison 2017/2018 den Titel in der ABB-FIA-Formel-E-Meisterschaft gewonnen hatte. René Rast saß am Steuer seines Audi RS 5 DTM. Komplettiert wurde der spektakuläre Auftritt auf Schnee und Eis von Rallye-Weltmeister Walter Röhrl am Steuer eines historischen Audi Sport quattro.

„Das war ein superschönes Wochenende mit einer tollen Atmosphäre und tollen Menschen“, sagte Daniel Abt. „Für mich war es das erste Mal, ein Formel-E-Auto auf Eis zu fahren. Ein cooles Feeling! Es hat unheimlich viel Spaß gemacht – auch die Fans zu sehen, wenn man das Auto anstellt und durch die Kurven driftet. Ich hoffe, ich kann nächstes Jahr wieder dabei sein.“

Abt versuchte sich auch erfolgreich im traditionellen Skijöring, bei dem ein Skifahrer von einem Auto gezogen wird. Der erste Mensch, der auf Schnee und Eis am Seil eines Formel-E-Rennwagens hing, ist seit diesem Wochenende Freestyle-Skirennläufer Benedikt Mayr. „Das war klasse. Nun möchte ich unbedingt ein Formel-E-Rennen erleben“, sagte der Deutsche.

Deutlich schwierigere Bedingungen hatte René Rast. Während der Audi e-tron FE04 mit langen Rallyespikes perfekt ausgerüstet war, musste der DTM-Champion aufgrund der engen Radkästen des DTM-Autos mit kurzen Spikes auf den Eisparcours gehen. „Mit den kleinen Spikes und 500 PS an der Hinterachse hatten wir etwas Traktionsprobleme“, lachte Rast. „Es war trotzdem eine interessante Erfahrung, das DTM-Auto auf Eis zu fahren und hat sehr viel Spaß gemacht.“
