St Petroc’s Day/ Trinity Sunday
Tumblr media
Tregeagle. Source: Mazed website
Today is St Petroc’s Day and, in 2023, is also Trinity Sunday.
The sixth century Petroc led an uneventful, if holy, life, founding the monasteries at Padstow and Little Petherick in Cornwall before he died. He achieved legendary status after death as the jailer of the evil Jan Tregeagle, an unpopular magistrate in the early 1600s. The story goes that Tregeagle had sold his soul to the Devil and was eternally damned. However he was nonetheless called as a witness for the prosecution concerning a crooked land deal that, in life, he himself had facilitated. Tregeagle admitted his misdeeds in court but then did a runner to avoid going back to Hell. St Petroc appeared and agreed with Tregeagle he could keep him out of Satan’s clutches if he agreed to carry out a number of endless labours, including emptying the bottomless Dozmary Pool and weaving ropes out of sand on Padstow Beach. Tregeagle tried to escape again, but was run to ground by the Devil’s hell hounds, and was put back to work by Petroc, but this time bound in chains and howling all the while in anguish. Whereas Tregeagle was an historical figure, his story is probably the memory of a Celtic myth of a giant who lived in Dozmary Pool.
Trinity Sunday was once a notable feast day marked by church services, fairs and eating, to celebrate the Holy Trinity - the three aspects of the Christian God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Few Trinity Fairs now remain, with the most notable taking place on the Late May Bank Holiday in Southwold in Suffolk. This may reflect the modern Church’s ambiguity towards the Trinity, adapted as it clearly was from pagan triad gods, as an aid to conversion.

Tonight was the private viewing of the Falmouth Street Draw 24 event, I was nervous about having work on display but had very surprising feelings on it. My first thought was trepidation, I've always put something of myself into my creations and felt like an open nerve about what people might think on it. But as I looked around the room and saw the quality of the work I was alongside, I felt humbled to be considered to be put on the wall. I didn't win any prizes, nor had my work been purchased but I was most surprised that the one piece I had considered my worst of the four I produced, was the one that made the wall. The experience was humbling and filled me with a certain amount of pride that even what I consider my worst, might actually be viewed by someone else as my best. My first, albeit ever so humble and slightly anonymous, exhibition was definitely a rewarding experience. Not least of all that it was for a good cause.

BREAKING NEWS -
THE PRINCE OF WALES'S SOCIAL HOUSING PROJECT!
The Prince of Wales will build a £3m social housing development on his own land to tackle homelessness, delivering on his pledge in my interview with him last year that he would "absolutely" put social housing on the Duchy of Cornwall estate.
The development in Nansledan, a suburb of Newquay, the Cornish seaside town famous for its surfing, will include a mix of four-bedroom houses and one-bedroom flats.
The duchy, will supply the land for the project free of charge and cover all construction costs. It will also invest in local infrastructure, including a bus link and connections to electricity, water and superfast broadband.
The new low-carbon homes will feature slate roofs, granite lintels, solar panels, heat pumps and colourful timber windows. It will be built in a “traditional Cornish seaside” style, designed by Adam Architecture and local firm ALA Architects.
Prince William, who launched Homewards UK last year, is looking at more projects on his land. He wants other landowners to follow suit and build more social housing. William is also working with St Petrocs to offer residents “wraparound” support services in addition to housing.
Kensington Palace said: “The prince is delighted that the duchy is using the Homewards approach as inspiration for building this innovative housing project, partnering with St Petrocs to find ways of ultimately getting people into permanent housing.
“It is exactly what he wants to do and for him it’s another example that if we can show people here and in other countries what is possible, maybe others will follow our lead. The prince hopes that every town and city in the country will take inspiration from this project.”

The Ragadaziow (forefathers) Guisers performing the trial of the Beast of Bodmin- a mock trial in the style of a mummers play dating back to 1549. The Bodmin Play (An Gwary Bosvenna) sees the beast captured and paraded in the streets- St Petroc’s Ossery Casket watching over the event.
The Beast of Bodmin is not just a recent cultural reference but refers to the local tradition of a dragon at Halgavor. Legend states that St. Petroc removed a splinter from the creature’s eye and thus tamed it. Historical records of Riding Day Revels refer to people being tricked into searching for and fighting the dragon. - Bodmin, Kernow

Lanhydrock House and Gardens, Cornwall by photphobia The great house stands in extensive grounds (360 hectares or 890 acres) above the River Fowey and it has been owned and managed by the National Trust since 1953. Much of the present house dates back to Victorian times but some sections date from the 1620s. It is a Grade I listed building and is set in gardens with formal areas. The hill behind the house is planted with a fine selection of shrubs and trees. Lanhydrock estate belonged to the Augustinian priory of St Petroc at Bodmin but the Dissolution of the Monasteries during the 1530s saw it pass into private hands. In 1620 wealthy merchant Sir Richard Robartes, of Truro, acquired the estate and began building Lanhydrock House, designed to a four-sided layout around a central courtyard and constructed of grey granite. Robartes died in 1624 but work on the building was continued by his son John Robartes, 1st Earl of Radnor, a notable public figure who served as Lord Privy Seal and Lord President of the Council. The embattled walls were built of rude (rough), massive granite blocks with years 1636 and 1642 on the walls, indicating when they were built. A barbican gate was added and the house was garrisoned by Parliamentary forces in August 1644 when Sir Richard Grenville took possession. Lanhydrock is a civil parish centred on a country estate and mansion in Cornwall, United Kingdom. The parish lies south of the town of Bodmin and is bounded to the north by Bodmin parish, to the south by Lanlivery parish and to the west by Lanivet parish. The parish church is dedicated to St Hydroc and stands in the grounds of Lanhydrock House. Parts date back to the late 15th century and the church has a chancel, nave, north and south aisles and three-stage battlemented tower with nine bells. Eight bells date from the late 19th century and are regularly rung. The ninth bell dates from circa 1599 and is only rung infrequently for tolling. https://flic.kr/p/2cDqiCp

PRINCE OF WALES DIARIES ♔
9 MAY 2024 || DUCHY OF CORNWALL VISIT - NEWQUAY (1/2) : NANSLEDAN HOUSING PROJECT
The Duke of Cornwall will be carrying engagements in Newquay and the Isles of Scilly as part of a two-day visit to the Duchy. For his first engagement in Newquay, he visited Nansledan, the site where the Duchy of Cornwall's first ever innovative housing project to help address homelessness will be built. The project will be delivered alongside Cornish charity, St Petrocs, and will provide 24 homes with wrap around support for local people experiencing homelessness. The project's transformative approach is inspired by Homewards - The Royal Foundation's five year programme to show that it is possible to end homelessness. During his visit William met representatives from the Duchy of Cornwall who are leading the development of the site and saw where the new housing will be located. He also met the CEO of St Petrocs, Henry Meacock, and a resident of St Petrocs Newquay who spoke to him about the transformative impact of receiving a home and the additional wrap around support.
