I'm watching Star Trek Voyager for the first time and let me tell you the amount of mental damage I took from the whiplash of seeing Sarah Silverman show up unexpectedly in Season 3 was NOT insignificant

Best Starfleet XO by rowdiness
Ransom. Stabbed the captain's daughter AND tried to eat the ship AND gets on everybody's nerves with tales of his bench press high score. Understood the assignment, A+, no notes.
Burnham. Got so rowdy. Like, SO rowdy. Amazing XO. Ultimately didn't stab her captain, which is good for her, but bad for my personal entertainment.
Kira. Built a kiln and then burned it down. Pointed and laughed at Dukat. Got so rowdy she fought *for* the Cardassians at one point. Should have stabbed more people, mostly Damar.
Spock. The other S'chn T'gai. Tried to kill the captain, and he would have gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for that lousy doctor. Swordfought that lousy doctor.
Gwyn. Tried to stab multiple people, most of them on purpose.
Una. Knocked out two department heads in the same episode. Heck yes!
Seven. I haven't seen PIC, but I heard Jeri Ryan was in it and I loved her in Leverage, so I hope she got to stab lots of people. <3
Tuvok. Love that guy, the brain cell, trolled the Maquis. I saw like two episodes of Voy, no idea if he stabbed anyone, but I really want him to.
T'Pol. Points deducted for ending more fights than she starts as far as I've seen. Super secret super agent, but sadly, I have yet to see her stab Archer. She should stab Archer. As a treat.
You know, I can't actually remember if Chakotay or Tuvok were XO of Voy and I'm too lazy to look it up, so I would like to encourage someone else to sing his praises and tell me about how cool he was until I get round to it.
Tysess. Politely yet firmly told Janeway no that one time. Boo!
Riker. Got a little pouty that one time when his boss was abducted and his replacement boss made them all work less. Could definitely teach that man tricks with treats and clicker training, which is probably why the psychiatrist was into him.

This was the first episode of Strange New Worlds that was just a huge miss for me. Spoilers below.
I have no strong feelings one way or the other about Pike's girlfriend. She's fine. She seems like a competent and smart person but we've gotten so little of her that I feel like we have no stakes in their relationship, but honestly that part was fine. Maybe this was supposed to be us becoming more invested in it, I don't know.
Pike being basically unmasked as hyper emotional and ready to kill before he remembers himself was... I mean I guess they were going for wanting to show us a bit more of the Pike we'll eventually see in The Menagerie but honestly I feel like the entire part on the planet was just kind of... boring. I wanted to care, but it was the first time I found myself reaching for my phone during SNW.
But that's all okay, I can live with an episode that just didn't hit the right notes for me. The very big problem I had with this episode was... Ortegas.
Last season, everyone in the main cast had an episode focused on them, or a storyline threaded through the season focused on them, and/or big moments that focused in their backstories and who they were outside of their jobs on the Enterprise. Ortegas got a few fun moments, but then took on the Stiles role from "Balance of Terror" in "A Quality of Mercy" and so maybe the most memorable thing she did was be an asshole in an alternative timeline.
There was a small fan outcry and a promise that there'd be an Ortegas-centered episode this season.
And I really, really hope I'm wrong when I say... I think this was it!?!?
She gets a log entry at the beginning, a quick scene where she gets rejected from doing something she wants to do, not really anything to do in the middle, and then at the end basically she gets a meme of "I'm Erica Ortegas and I'm the Pilot!" Yep. That's what we get for her. She gets to save the ship, which is cool, but we learn absolutely nothing about her backstory, her life off the ship, any more depth about her character. We see her quarters and there's nothing distinctive about them in ANY way except "Oh she has a few model ships!" Then she memes herself into saving the ship, and gets a quick log entry at the end to wrap it up.
Yep, she's Erica Ortegas and she flies the ship. That's what we knew of her at the start of the episode and that's what we know of her at the end of the episode.
Melissa Navia did a great job with what they gave her. But really it was a storyline anyone could have had. "I'm Christine Chapel and I'm a nurse!" "I'm Spock and I do science!" etc. We were promised an Ortegas episode and we got an episode where she was in it a little bit more than normal, got a couple dozen more lines of dialog in it than normal and absolutely no depth at all.
Melissa Navia deserves better, and Ortegas fans do, too.
I don't know why SNW seems to serve all its other characters so well and is failing Ortegas so badly.

Oh I Love pissed Off Data.
But I wished it would've been more a merging than a deletion of Lore.
And I Liked Vadic as a villain.

So now, months later, we can all agree Shatner bitched about Star Trek being woke not because he genuinely cares about it being woke, but because he was in his feelings about them casting yet another person to play Kirk? I watch that now and see an old man intimately aware of the fact he’s immaterial to the franchise that made him a successful man. I had no idea Actual Kirk was in the show at the time Shatner mouthed off and even then I still felt like his heart wasn’t in that little bullshit hot take. Now I know and it makes sense.

The problem with writing an episode that is literally just an Ursula le Guin story is that people who have read that story will figure it out in the first three minutes and spend the entire next forty waiting impatiently for the characters to catch up.

STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS - Those Old Scientists
Given a longer time frame, I might be able to brute force a solution. But as of now, there is no way to track the Orions.

I couldn’t sleep, and the new Picard episode is up, so I started watching it and I... oh my God...
Big spoilers below.
WESLEY.
WESLEY CRUSHER RETURNS.
I honestly cannot believe it.  I need to go back and rewatch it again.
I cannot believe they finally gave closure to Wesley Crusher.
It was almost everything the character of Wesley Crusher deserved.  A brief explanation of who he was and what he’s doing.  Letting us know he’s OK and happy where he is.  An explanation of why.
He’s probably not going to be in S3 now almost for sure, but who knows.  I wish he could have interacted with Picard (or Beverly next season), that’s what made it almost perfect, but I get why it wasn’t in the cards.  It was still just so damn good to see him and know he was okay.
Seriously, I’m very emotional here.
I’m like, two years younger than Wil Wheaton and he was my teenage celebrity crush.  Wesley Crusher meant a lot to me not just as a teen crush, but as an “it’s OK to be a smart kid” character.  Fuck the Wesley haters.  He’s meant a lot to me since the day Encounter at Farpoint first aired and my family all gathered around the TV to watch it. I sobbed the day he left the show in season five, and cheered every time he came back.
I never thought we’d get a canon goodbye to Wesley, especially after his scene was cut from Nemesis.  So, even if he’s not in S3 of Picard, that was enough.
Wil Wheaton was also so very good in that scene too, and you could tell he absolutely loved getting to be Wesley Crusher one more time.
I’m going to go rewatch that and finish the episode, and then I’m going to post this again tomorrow but way more coherently.

I love that SNW hyposprays can be delivered
to the shoulder (like in TOS)
Tumblr media
or to the neck (like in TNG).
Tumblr media
Therefore implying possible health care provider choice for hypospray placement and methodology … which makes this even funnier:
