my nephew (13) made me a gemsona! i decided i wanted a pearl and we chose purple because it’s my favorite color + gave her my hair and a rocker style. i watched him do the editing, and it’s so cool what he can do with digital art! it’s also extremely funny when you remove pearl’s hair and she becomes a literal egghead lmao
also keeping the pointy nose was a choice. pearl is my favorite gem lol

We’re almost done!!!! Here’s Fire Opal 5UMM3R, ready to quietly judge you from the sidelines!!!
Apatite Rick
Andesine Diane
Andesine Beth
Moldavite Jerry
Pearl Morty
As far as the beginning of her life went, 5UMM3R had a pretty typical life like any other new gem. She was welcomed into Andesine 837H and Moldavite J3RRY’s family pretty much as soon as she emerged from the ground, and was sent to a nearby school where she can expand her horizons beyond what she was made for.
For the most part, she uses school to make new friends and try to gain popularity. Though gems technically never really age, she’s not actually a teenager, but she is in a similar phase of her life where she’d rather just enjoy life than plan for the future.
Her relationship with her family is... complicated to say the least.
5UMM3R sees the cracks in her parents’ relationship, even before R1CK came along and really drove a wedge into things. Still, she’s not one to get involved with other people’s relationships, so she for the most part just stays out of it.
In all honesty, she’s a bit jealous that M0R7Y gets to go around and have adventures with R1CK instead of her, and argues that she would be a better fit because she’s actually made for combat, but R1CK refuses to take her on as his go-to sidekick.
Whatever. She has better things to do anyway.

WHAT WAS THIS SHOW ABOUT?
One thing I really love about Steven Universe is that each of the four major characters kind of got a chance to be What The Show Was About. I would have LOVED spending more time with all of them and delving into who they were and who they became beyond what we got, but what we got was . . . actually pretty special.
STEVEN
Tumblr media
As the ACTUAL main character and the show's literal namesake, it's obvious he's the protagonist. Our man has been through a lot and I don't suppose anyone would say he never got his moment considering he was there for the whole show. But except for some pretty important identity stuff that depended on his choices in the last episode of the OG show, a LOT of Steven Universe is stuff that happened to and around Steven. There was so much history and so much baggage that a lot of the story was about how he fended it off, dealt with it, fought it, reasoned with it, and managed everyone's emotions in the process.
Steven is set apart from the others in extraordinary ways: being half human, being extremely young, being Rose Quartz's son, and having Diamond-level powers and a claim to the Pink Diamond throne.
We had to wait for Steven Universe Future before the show was entirely focused on him, his development, his trauma, and his healing.
Some episodes from the original show focused on Steven's mental health and growth as a person--most notably "Mindful Education"--but we just didn't get to linger very long with his development until the epilogue show because plot stuff was always happening, other people's feelings were taking center stage, and worlds needed saving. I'm really glad we got Steven Universe Future for that reason. Some people disagreed, but I felt like it was a long overdue look into the soul of who he is--how his central defining character trait was his selflessness, and how desperately he needed to address that without having it manifest in a toxic way in the tradition of Jasper, White Diamond, or Pink Diamond.
AMETHYST
Tumblr media
It could be argued that Amethyst had the most careful, nuanced, significant character growth of the three supporting Gems in the show. And it started immediately in the first season, when she constantly squabbled with Pearl and revealed that she felt judged and stifled and treated like a misbehaving child as early as "Tiger Millionaire."
Amethyst is set apart from the others in extraordinary ways: She's the clear outsider as the one who didn't fight in the war, the only full Gem from Earth in the group, the only Gem who grew up with no Homeworld dogma but also no roots, the only Gem who'd never met another one of her own and longed on some level for that connection.
The show continues to check in with Amethyst's self-worth issues throughout, giving us "An Indirect Kiss," "On the Run," "Maximum Capacity," "Reformed," and even "Cry For Help" (which seemed like an Amethyst episode until Pearl did her thing). We get "Onion Friend" when Amethyst shows us she thinks she's boring and that nobody values her. And we get "Too Far" when Amethyst really starts to internalize her inferiority based on Peridot's assessment of her and revelations of her origin.
With her cooking on that, we end up spending a string of episodes with Amethyst as the focus character. She's still shaking off dust about not doing what she's supposedly made for when a fight with Jasper twists the knife. She's beaten and insulted and almost physically destroyed, having to be rescued by Stevonnie. Steven misguidedly tries to cheer her up by letting her win at video games and she reveals that she thinks she's "the worst Crystal Gem." She finds an ally in him but still wrestles with her inferiority to Jasper. And when she still can't beat her in a rematch, she breaks down and realizes her strength is in togetherness. From there, she begins the process of healing, helped along by additional support from her family and finding some connection with meeting the Famethyst. When "Tiger Philanthropist" comes along and reveals that Amethyst doesn't need the outlet of wrestling anymore because she DOES feel she's good enough, we can reflect on what she's been through and how far she's come, and how that leads to her being the one who doesn't fall apart on Steven in the face of huge revelations about his mother.
GARNET
Tumblr media
Garnet kind of peaked early, which is not to say it wasn't great. The final episode of Season 1 revealed her identity as a Fusion and further that she was "made of love," and then everyone was on the "Garnet is awesome" train.
Garnet is set apart from the others in extraordinary ways: being a Fusion all the time, leading the team and generally holding the others at an emotional distance, never asking questions, offering resources to the others for stability and balance, being the only Gem with Future Vision and a massive responsibility to use it well.
"Jailbreak" was a huge defining moment for Garnet, and as the "stable" character whose worst problems were mostly other people's problems, she did not seem to need a character arc. She was the culmination of a love story, always awesome and strong and dependable and everyone leaned on her, and in "Jailbreak" we found out why she has such an amazing foundation. But the show was not done with Garnet. Not by a long shot.
Pearl hurt her badly in "Cry For Help." Garnet's breakdown and subsequent focus on building Pearl back up was a significant look into how Ruby and Sapphire operate as a couple. Garnet is amazing partly because she is the result of all that work, but who is she as a person? As an individual who isn't an individual?
We see some of her struggle with leadership as the show moves on--most notably "Pool Hopping," and some of the last episodes when she can't make decisions in the Diamonds' shadow because everything's become about Steven's choices. But Garnet gets a spotlight again when Ruby and Sapphire feel differently about the Pink Diamond revelations and they worry Garnet only exists because of a lie. Digging into the real answers of who they are together through finally asking "The Question," and defining their fusion in their own image, was a move toward more authentic stability for Garnet. Her wedding made headlines, and watching her spearhead the immediate fight against the Diamonds on the beach was awe-inspiring.
PEARL
Tumblr media
Pearl is initially presented as "the perfect one"--she's persnickety, she's organized, she's hyper-competent, and she's all about rules. But something else is going on with her not far beneath the surface. The first Gem to die onscreen--because of overconfidence and a silly mistake. The first (full) Gem to cry onscreen (and then over and over and over), the first to have a breakdown (and then over and over and over), the only one of the four to have faced an impossible choice, a relationship that nearly destroyed her, and a secret that ate her up from the inside. She was the only one who had (nearly) the whole story. All along.
Pearl is set apart from the others in extraordinary ways: the oldest Gem of the group by far, the one who served a Diamond and kept Rose Quartz's secret against her own will, the one who doesn't eat, sleep, or shapeshift. The one who both sat at royalty's right hand and existed as the lowest form of Gem life--created to be a servant, with programming no other type of Gem must live with. Her anxiety, grief, and desperate loneliness makes her one of the most multifaceted and interesting characters in animation history.
We see some minor wigging out from Pearl in "An Indirect Kiss" and a more intense version of it in "Space Race," but we get a much clearer picture that Pearl is Not Okay in "Rose's Scabbard." At that point we assume she thought she was closer to Rose than she really was--that she thought herself special and partial to secrets no one else knew, but that it wasn't true. "Rose's Scabbard" is a different episode on rewatch. Pearl is right that she alone was the one Rose "told everything." She did have a special relationship with her that the others did not.
Pearl's insecurity continues to bite us in the face as the show goes on. She tries to mold Connie into a self-sacrificial super-soldier after her own image in "Sworn to the Sword." Her deep need for someone strong to tell her what to do leads her to betray Garnet in "Cry For Help." Her inability to appropriately make it up to Garnet further complicates our understanding of how she can be so lost. Her jealousy, inertia, and angst frustrate her relationships, with some nice resolution in "Mr. Greg." Peridot's lore drop about Pearls' slave status sheds light on this, and seeing her get underestimated and bossed around by other Homeworld Gems is disheartening as we move on, but when we finally find out that she was Rose's secret accomplice in a false murder that poisoned thousands of their own citizens and led to massive waves of death, and that Pearl's free will to speak about it was also ripped away from her, we finally know, we know why she's been so brittle she could snap all along. She's been trapped inside herself all this time--in an almost literal way--and it's a wonder she's managed to carry on. Pearl's arcs have often been deemed the most emotionally fraught and tinged with gray morality.
These characters all got some very important story arcs focused on them in the midst of moving the plot along. I think the show did a phenomenal job with not only emotional development but with fallout for the other characters. We got to see the Gems' (and other loved ones') reactions when Steven's mental health took a nosedive, and watched them learn more about how to be there for him. We got to see Steven's initially misguided attempts to hype Amethyst up when she was spiraling, leading to him offering her what she actually did need, along with Garnet and Pearl (as Sardonyx) misfiring a bit when they wanted to celebrate Smoky Quartz. We got to see Steven's curiosities and misgivings about Garnet's life as a Fusion, and how Garnet affects others when she does crack under the strain, and how Steven must step up to leadership when Ruby and Sapphire are separated and how Amethyst tries to take care of him while Pearl has a guilt spiral. And we see how Pearl's choices led to Garnet's silent treatment, Amethyst's sulky helplessness, and Steven's attempt to hold the family together; we see how Pearl's confession reformats everyone's understanding of who the Crystal Gems are and why they're even here.
Tumblr media
And even when the show is taking careful turns with each character to paint their nuanced feelings and troubles on the screen, it still managed to give us such a worthwhile overall story, with action and backstory and worldbuilding and everything. What's different about it is that the center was always its people--their relationships, their psyches, their evolution and education. I truly love the balance these creators chose, and I remain grateful that we got to experience this story.

“Does it hurt?”
“Not really…it doesn’t feel like anything.”
Your past and the reality of your gem scares him
He treats you like glass despite your clear difference in power
He can’t imagine letting you back into a world that resulted in the crack you speak of
Beheading people who are to careless of you is getting too much
You’ve taught him not all rules need to be followed
But maybe
Just maybe
it would benefit you both if he made some rules just for your safety

i love how it becomes increasingly apparent that there is no other gem that could've made steven quartz universe
you think, at the start, okay. this is an unusual thing, an unheard of thing, for a gem to have a child (transform into part of the material to create a child, give their gem to a child). but all gems can shapeshift, and can reform their bodies with different looks.
but... just looks. amethyst can't change the amount of mass she has, and changing how it's distributed causes issues. holding shapeshifted forms takes energy. for a gem to permanently change forms, and in fact, infuse their form with a growing and changing body in spite of the perfectly static nature of gem physiology... that's absolutely wild.
but hey, could be a rose quartz thing, right? after all, we haven't seen another rose quartz yet, and also, not everyone can shapeshift equally! era 2 gems can't shapeshift. ...gems made without pink diamond's essence can't shapeshift.
so shapeshifting is what pink diamond contributes to the pool; she's almost certainly the only diamond capable of doing so. (no wonder her legacy transformed her family.)
and hey, would you look at that: pink diamond held a shapeshifted form for extended periods with no visible difficulty. pink diamond reformed into a new shape, with entirely different mass and proportions and even gem orientation.
pink diamond was seen on a jungle planet and seen cracking her pearl, but she was never known to control plants or heal gems. her abilities were new with the transformation into rose quartz. and unique abilities came with steven's arrival, too.
no other gem could allow for so much change to their form that they could become part of a whole new person, without ever turning back.
no other gem could've made steven quartz universe.

I may rewatch Steven Universe again. I’m thinking about it again and just how...important that show was.
I think about Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz a lot, and for a lot of reasons, but I am most often struck by the tragedy she wound up being. Not because she “died,” but because it wasn’t until she sacrificed her form to become part of Steven that she managed to free herself.
Here’s one of my favorite quotes from her: “ When a Gem is made, it's for a reason. They burst out of the ground already knowing what they're supposed to be, and then... that's what they are. Forever. But you, you're supposed to change. You're never the same even moment to moment -- you're allowed and expected to invent who you are. What an incredible power -- the ability to "grow up."
I need you to understand why I love this quote. Read it. Take it in. Understand that at its heart, it is completely false.
Yes, a Gem is made for a reason, and this is true as far as what was expected of Gems on Homeworld and the colonies. This is the rhetoric Pink has grown up hearing her entire life. But if it were an absolute truth, then the Pink Diamond that our Pearl knew would never have existed. If it were true, we wouldn’t have Garnet. If it were true, we wouldn’t have Amethyst. If it were true, Rose Quartz would not exist.
Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl all change their appearances each time they reform. Think about that. That’s them reinventing who they are. That’s them growing up. Changing.
Pink Diamond spent so long being forced into a shape she couldn’t stand, she couldn’t see herself changing. She couldn’t appreciate the changes happening around her, to the friends she made and protected.
So she released her form in the hopes that the new life she created would be able to change and grow the way she thought she, as a Gem, couldn’t.
In a lot of ways, Steven inherited Pink Diamond’s self-doubt and identity issues, and from the time he was beginning to come into his gem powers, he did not grow very much. It’s noted in “Steven’s Birthday” that he has not physically changed in a few years. As long as Steven holds onto the legacy of Rose Quartz and the conflicts her passing heaped upon him, he doesn’t actually grow or change very much at all.
But in Steven Universe Future, Steven has physically matured. What happened?
He embraced his gem.
Steven finally fulfilled what Rose wanted for him. He did the thing that she never found it in herself to do. He let go of who he was “supposed to be.” He stopped thinking that having that Gem meant he didn’t have a choice in who he was. Because the Gem had changed. And it had changed with him.
Do you understand how much this fucks me up on a regular basis??

if I was a gem in Steven universe the first thing I would do is get poofed but mysteriously choose not to reform for like decades so my loved ones have to keep my gem carefully in the house no longer daring to hope so by the time the protagonist joins this storyline my gemstone is just a mysterious feature of the house for the other gems to say, in a hushed voice, “that’s obsidian. she won’t wake up…” around

Is fusing considered vaguely intimate in the AU? Harry having fused a bunch and Black Opal being Kim's first fusion kind of mirrors Ruby and Sapphire, and the idea that Kim gets a bit bashful or embarrassed about it in front of other people is kinda funny to me.
I'd like to think that because of the general lack of intimacy in Disco Elysium and Martinaise (people seem to almost never hug or kiss each other / engage in pda and the hug with the working class woman is treated as a very rare interaction), fusion can be intimate for some or at least somewhat taboo. Not necessarily frowned upon by the people of Martinaise but moreso uncomfortable and surprising. I guess it would be less that people are surprised that there's a fusion and more that anybody likes another person in Martinaise or Revachol enough to want to fuse out of anything but utilitarian purposes. All of Martinaise is touch starved and its pretty unusual for that to be proven wrong by anyone. Fusion is definitely frowned upon by the Moralintern and generally by the RCM as a complex, but is still done nonetheless (within C Wing however fusion is less frowned upon). The RCM is based on a partner system after all. Its bound to be that the partners fuse for combat or even recreationally but in the police they are expected to unfuse after their mission is accomplished. I think of how the RCM officers are so limited in their firearms and ammunition and I think fusion is treated like a weapon that needs to be monitored and controlled. Permafusions are incredibly uncommon, though they are more common amongst communist circles and the underground (as a commie pansexual myself I think I speak from the heart). More of my ideas and reasoning under the read more!
I think Harry and Jean could have experimented before with fusing on their good days. Or alternatively, they could have rushed to fuse in a stressful situation or to apprehend a suspect. However, its risky to do so because when a fusion poofs, all gems that make up a fusion poof at the same time. Its seen as a last resort on the field.
It's possible that Jean could have fused with Harry when he poofed, since Harry's RCM cloak has some bullet holes implying he was shot / poofed before in the line of duty, to draw him forcibly out of his gem after unfusing. Like in the Change Your Mind finale of the show where to reform the crystal gems quickly Steven fuses with their gems, and they reform after they unfuse. In Harry's case forcing him out of his gem before he's ready to reform could be what contributed to his damaged psyche and unhealthy view towards fusing, as gems need to recuperate while poofed which is why it takes them so long to reform. The less time a gem takes to reform the more unstable their form and abilities are and Harry would definitely have experienced the consequences of never taking care of himself when he's down since Jean or someone else would force him right back into the ring again.
I think that Jean and Harry's fusion would be a fairly volatile and negative being, prone to humorless self deprecation. A bit like Smoky Quartz is prone to self deprecating jokes in Steven Universe, but here its genuinely toxic. Their fusion usually brings out the worst of them both. I don't think they're Malachite levels of unstable and toxic, but that their morbid humor and combined depression can have poor results. However its not all negative with them as when Jean and Harry are able to synchronize enough to maintain their fusion, the brotherly camaraderie is able to shine through and they cheer each other on with more confidence. I'm not sure how different the fusion would be before and after Harry's retrograde amnesia, but I have some general ideas I'll share at a later time.
I definitely think Kim would be most likely to unfuse first with Harry, less because he doesn't enjoy fusion (he really, really does), but more so that he is more anxious to be caught by surprise or to stand out, which is kind of what fusions do lol. In Martinaise people may not care so much as its a place largely abandoned by any kind of real repercussions, but he still has a reputation he cares about more than Harry does. And Harry has a somewhat unhealthy view of fusion, where its something that is becoming a better person than he thinks he is and disappearing into another person, rather than a mutual dance or union of partners. So this leads to Kim being hesitant to fuse with Harry unless he is able to convince him that their fusion isn't an excuse to disappear into a better half but to instead become someone that represents the joy they both share with each other, as equals.
And yes, Kim is bashful to be a fusion and it is his first time fusing. He may have wanted to fuse with Eyes in the past but never did and regrets not fusing. He thinks its crazy that anyone would ever want to fuse with him. But over time Harry and Kim fuse more often and it starts to represent their love for each other.

How does Ashfur's power work, and what happens to his victims? Are they dead dead, like when One-eye nom-ed Tom?
His power is the same as One Eye's back in DOTC, but somehow a bit less "complete." Tom is GONE destroyed as if he's dissolved, Ashfur's victims still exist in some horrific form.
I'm thinking that how it works is that a StarClan cat does become a "star" in a sense. There's a Shine within their heart, and if they ever "die" in heaven, they re-form from that shine. Kind of like... having an internal steven-universe gem. But it acts more like a gas or a liquid.
(googles some random star terms) OK I like the way that "pulsar" kind of sounds like "pulse." I'm going to call their soul-core shine a Pulsar.
Dark Forest cats have a pulsar too. If they die in their home, it "absorbs" the power around them to reform them the next day. If they die OUTSIDE of their home, it leaks out. Living cats fuck with this natural process somehow.
(Though I'm kinda reconsidering the idea that they can be killed in their natural environments at all. I love the plot beat of Ivypool accidentally killing perma-killing Antpelt but I might shuffle it for consistency's sake, or have him get killed on the mortal plane somehow.)
SO ANYWAY back to Ashfur
He's "eating" them by snatching the Pulsar right out of them. Like he's swallowing their heart. They still exist within him in some form.
When Bristlefrost knocks him out of Heaven and they burn up in orbit, whatever happened to him and Bris happened to the souls he ate as well. So if WC ever does a "Reincarnation Plotline" type of thing for all their double-dead souls, I will be including Mousefur and Skystar in it.
But I can't solidify any other details until then, since BB tries to adapt canon and I need to account for how the Erins choose to do it.

the entire show of steven universe takes place in the inworld of a system? i haven’t seen that theory before, could you elaborate on that? /gen
Sorry that we're not really in the state to infodump about this the way we usually can and really want to. But SU excites the shit out of us, and here's at least the barebones explanation:
The show is about the effects of trauma and how to address it. It covers generational trauma, and it even appears to address trauma related to colonialism and conquest, but it doesn't really model that last take from the perspective of the colonized very well. And that’s not just because it was written mostly by white people, though that’s a problem.
The reason it's plot is the way it is is because it's about the instigating event, the Diamond's mistreatment of Rose, and the ways that everyone (not just Rose) dealt with that for millennia afterward.
Right?
OK, so.
Start with the Crystal Gems. They live in a temple that looks like a person. And within that temple, they have their own rooms that work almost exactly like headspaces.
THEN, they are introduced to the audience as the group of beings going around and finding corrupted gems and bubbling them up and storing them in their rooms.
That's active dissociation of trauma holders.
When Steven goes in to one of their rooms to release a corrupted gem that he regrets bubbling, that gem goes and inadvertently releases a bunch of others.
That's an illustration of the hazards of poking around in dissociated memories. It can cause a cascading trigger.
That, right there, convinced us that at least the Crystal Gems represented a system. Combine that with Garnet being a fusion who loves being a fusion, but who can separate and reform, and we're dead convinced there was a system on the writing team, and that the central characters and themes of the show were written specifically for the benefit of systems with trauma, whether that's DID, OSDD, or CPTSD.
A lot of the messages can still apply to singlets, but they work best for systems.
Once you accept that, it's honestly hard not to see the entirety of the show's universe and history as the system itself. Especially with Steven's name, Universe, symbolically pointing to that perspective.
Most especially with how the show wraps up.
With corrupted gems being especially traumatized system members, you kind of logically have to look at all gems as part of the same system. At which point, you start to notice that all the gems are traumatized at least a little in ways that profoundly affect their behavior, including the Diamonds.
This raises the question of what the humans represent.
They could be introjects of people the system has met, the town they live in. But you don’t have to read it that literally. If the show is metaphorically about living in a system, the exact explanation isn't necessary. It's not canon, it's metaphor. Intentional and real, but not a fact of the story.
They could represent otherwise normal members. System members who would have existed as they are without the trauma that shaped the gems.
They could be dream people, the system members we all encounter in our dreams and mistake for NPCs.
They could be the members who aspire to be human, to be able to function when fronting in the outworld, and who are not caught up in being protectors (the Crystal Gems), persecutors (the Diamonds), or trauma holders (the corrupted gems), and the like (the other gems).
But whatever they represent, when Steven became able to fuse with Connie, it was obvious that the humans were really, fundamentally the same kind of beings as the gems, playing by the same rules of physics at a basic level. They're system members, too.
And when the show delved into their lives and showed the effects of the gems' antics, past and present, on them, that made it undeniable to us.
They're part of the system, too, and integral to everyone's future recovery, and part of the need for it.

relationship hcs ; white diamond
Tumblr media
requested by ; anonymous (20/04/23)
fandom(s) ; steven universe
fandom masterlist(s) ; here
character(s) ; white diamond
outline ; “hiii!!! could you possibly do white diamond (steven universe) x gn dating headcanons? <3”
warning(s) ; set before pink is assigned earth, canon-typical violence and anti-organic life ideals, unhealthy relationship dynamics (its white, so this is rather obvious), author hasn’t watched this show in ages so potentially shaky characterisation
dating white diamond would be incredibly difficult for a variety of reasons — not least of which being her distinct apathy and detachment to any and all life outside of her small circle of equals
and even then she can treat them in a very cruel and cold manner (see her treatment of pink diamond and her punishment of blue and yellow for speaking out against her)
but if you managed to somehow get to a point where you were in a romantic relationship with her then things would probably be quite different
of course you’d be subject to the same pampering and special treatments given to the other diamonds and she’d have all of the lesser gems worship you as one of them
you’d have your own palace like structure similar to her ‘sisters’ and the only time she’d leave her head/ship would be to visit you there — it’s the only other location she deems worthy of her presence
she’s not really affectionate (it’s just not in her nature) but she’s very liberal with her praise of you
she insists that you’re perfect in every way: perfect cut, perfect colour, perfect stance and so on
will harshly punish anyone that speaks against you — even if that person is another diamond like yellow or pink
hand picks a set of staff for you including the most perfect cut of pearl she can get her hands on
ensures that you never go without anything that you might crave whether that’s land, entertainment or even the indulgence of organic things (which she disapproves of but also won’t deny you)
holds you to the same incredibly high standards that she holds herself to but won’t outright punish you for falling out of line
like she’ll correct you and pull you out of the situation but she won’t shatter you for it
you’re the only one who is able to make her laugh or show any emotion other than her baseline polite apathy
insists on you reforming into a form that matches her ‘clothing’
heavily considers giving you your own colony but ultimately decides against it — offering you some of her planets to watch over instead
during pink’s galas she’ll have you perched on her hand/shoulder/knee as you enjoy the festivities and will only really talk to you throughout unless the other diamonds have something of the utmost importance to say
still considers herself above you because of her cut of gem, but values you incredibly highly — putting you on equal footing to the other diamonds irrespective of your natural rank
insists that you travel with heavy protection because you’re so precious to her
gets jealous and petty extremely easily and will take out her frustrations on the offending gems by shattering them en masse without any hesitation or remorse
in her mind their fate was sealed when they began to toy with her property (you)
though they don’t even need to be flirty or cruel — if someone talks to you for too long or makes you laugh then that can be enough to guarantee a death sentence
this means that most gems are outright terrified of you and won’t engage with you unless they have to (e.g. being assigned to protect or advise you)
it also leaves you feeling incredibly isolated as your only consistent company is white (who isn’t the most empathetic), her ‘sisters’ (who don’t treat you as an equal) and your pearl (who is forced to be around you by her very nature)
so by no stretch of the imagination is this a healthy relationship — mainly because of white’s inability to regulate her emotions and attachments properly — but at the very least you’ll never doubt how much you mean to her
because it’s abundantly clear that your life and relationship is, to white, worth discarding a few millennia’s worth of resources through the unnecessary shattering of hundreds of perfect gems over the course of your relationship
but at least you’ll never want for anything and, even if she struggles to articulate as much or act in any traditionally affectionate way, white diamond does care greatly for you
and she’ll do anything for you if you say the word
(even to her own detriment at times)

Day 4: "Stay Please" [Reader x Jasper] {Steven Universe/ Future}
You were sitting, shaking from the sudden altercation. Having someone tell you second-hand what happened to Jasper and why she was following a teenager around was a little too much to take in.
She had been shattered... by the teenager she was currently following around...
Shattered
It didn't sit well with you in the slightest. You couldn't even rest easy in the knowledge that this wasn't normal for a reformed gem.
It was just Jasper being Jasper...
Memories flooded your mind's eye. Stumbling into the massive canyon, person-sized holes lining the walls, and all you could do was gape. Until being stopped by a tall, extra-bronzed woman with just the wildest-looking hair you've ever seen. Her sneering didn't even register as you blurted how attractive you found her.
You opted to stay nearby, enduring the weird comments, but getting closer to this mysterious woman. You were entranced and there was nothing anyone could do about it.
But now, after understanding what she really was, understanding how dangerous she was, and the fact that she had been corrupted shortly after you managed to get her to smile instead of sneer; you were reeling from the fact that she would just... ignore your presence.
For no reason.
She was just choosing to because she wanted to...
.
You couldn't stay away from the weird kindergarten where you first met Jasper. Things were so different, but they weren't. Not really, everything about this area looked the same but you weren't--
"Hey. [Name]."
Turning quickly, Jasper stood there. Same old corruption marks, small horns, but you didn't know if she was really the same person you knew.
"I know you won't fully get why I did what I did." Jasper sat next to you, staring down at the canyon, "I wasn't trying to hurt you, I didn't even know I was doing anything wrong."
"You won't hesitate to do it again though." You stood up to leave, "That's why you up and left the first time, right?"
Jasper scrambled up after you, "Wait, [Name]! Please!"
When you didn't stop, she ran to catch up. Blocking your path and grabbing your shoulders.
"Stay, please." She demanded, "It, I... You know about the war and everything, right? How I lost everything, or thought I lost everything for hundreds of years?"
Turning away, yes you'd heard about all this. Mostly after Jasper was cured of her corruption, but you did know the whole story from Jasper's viewpoint. You still didn't know if she would do that again, the differences between the two of you were stark.
Even if you could empathize.
"Jas..."
"Please!" She hit her knees, "I was swept up in having my Diamond back, until I realized he was not much of a Diamond at all. I shouldn't have ignored you, I'm sorry."
It was hard to look at Jasper like this. It wasn't like she looked like a sad puppy or anything, but she was showing how genuine she was about this. You knew her well enough to know what she fully meant.
"Jasper, I..." You stepped back a little, just barely out of reach, "I might understand, but this did hurt me, a lot. It won't be easy to go back to the way we were before, I just... I care about you."
Jasper stood up, once again grabbing your shoulders, "Please [Name], please just stay. You're the only human I'm close to, the only person I'm close to. Please?"
"I'm not going anywhere." You leaned against her chest, "I just don't know what to feel about the whole thing."
"I'll do better, I promise." Jasper whispered, hugging you close, "I don't know what to do, but I know you'll tell me what I need to do. Please?"
You nodded slowly, letting yourself get scooped into a tight embrace. Taking comfort from the gesture and wanting to let everything go.

Fandom: Steven Universe Rating: Teen Audiences Words: ~1K Summary: “What’s going on—?” he croaks to absolutely no one (weakened, vulnerable, alone, pathetic—), a jolt of fresh panic surging through his entire system. He’s never seen a gem flicker before. He has no idea what this means.
Got a short one-shot for y'all today! This was a quick lil' guy I whipped up within the past week to boost my Camp NaNoWriMo word count in between working on other projects.
It's a canon-compliant fic set during the SU movie.
If you read this and enjoy, I’d greatly appreciate your support through reblogs here, or kudos/comments on AO3. Thank you! <3

“What’s going on—?” he croaks to absolutely no one (weakened, vulnerable, alone, pathetic—), a jolt of fresh panic surging through his entire system as he watches the diamond at his core outright flicker.
He’s never seen a gem flicker before. He has no idea what this means. But even more urgently… his gaze snaps up to all the gemstones littering the grass like it’s a damned battlefield… he has no idea how he’s supposed to de-escalate this situation if he can’t successfully bubble this rogue Gem. The others will reform in no time, of that he’s sure— but so will she. And when she does, what’s stopping her from pulling out another weapon and attacking them all over again?
Steven shakes the grim thought out of his head, exerting a surprising sum of energy in dragging himself back to his feet. (Stars, he’s so out of breath…) But no— no. He can’t allow himself to get so caught up in the brambles of such nebulous what-ifs. Come on, Universe. Stay resilient. Stay positive. There’s only one mission that matters at the moment, and that’s gathering up that weapon and all these gemstones and moving them somewhere safe. He’s capable of that much, at least.
Still… that anxious, always hyper-vigilant part of himself he tries hard to keep buried can’t help but dread the worst as he shoves that heart-shaped gem and the pink scythe into the deepest depths of his jacket pocket and drags his spent, trembling body up the hill to retrieve all his loved ones.
_
Steven collapses face-first upon the couch the second all the Gems are safely deposited on the living room coffee table, heaving what has to be the single most exaggerated groan of exhaustion any one soul has ever produced.
Ugh.
Good golly.
Amethyst is usually back by now. That sure doesn’t shine any optimism on this situation, now does it? What on Earth did that scythe do to them?
And what the heck did it do to me, he thinks, the mere act of baseline existence leaving him as wiped as a marathon runner even though he’s literally lying as flat as a board. It’s a kind of total body exhaustion he rarely experiences, far more intense than a hard day’s workout or multiple nights of poor sleep.
In fact, now that he ponders his predicament, he hasn’t felt as drained as this since—
He pales, his heart pounding at a somewhat uneven tempo. With much effort, he pushes himself upright again… yanks up the bottom hem of his shirt to splay his opposing hand across the familiar planes of his own gemstone, tracing their edges until his pulse calms down and he stops feeling so itchy and paranoid. No. Stop. it’s not like The Incident at all. He’s whole. They’re together, not split in half, not disconnected from one another.
Or at least… (he swallows. Hard.) Not physically.
Flashing a frustrated grimace, Steven gathers the gem of their attacker in his palms and attempts to form a bubble around it again. And again. And again. No dice, alas. The result is the same no matter how hard he tries. Even if he manages to fashion one large enough, it bursts only a few heartbeats later, leaving him breathless and haggard and with nothing to show for it. He wipes away the sweat that’s started to bead upon his forehead, and— rather defeated by this failure— dumps that damned gem back on the table a tad rougher than he probably ought to.
Okay. So no bubble. Great. Just great. Absolutely peachy. What else about him is broken right now?
He throws out his arm, envisioning his shield bursting to life in front of it. And to his credit this hard-light weapon does briefly appear, but only as a glitchy flicker. Ugh. All right, so his shield’s a complete dud, too. With this in mind he sees no real point in testing any of his other powers. It seems his gem’s simply on the fritz now, no thanks to her. (He shoots a dirty glare at those pink, ever-taunting facets.) Plus, he figures an attempt and failure to float might prove disastrous. Best not to test fate today with how his luck’s been so far.
Steven clenches his fingers tight, painfully aware of how tense his whole body is right now. He outright can’t help it. This is the single most stressful thing that’s landed on his doorstep since the Diamonds crashed Garnet’s wedding. And not only that, but with all these muscle groups activated at once he can feel his pulse thrumming like a never-ending mantra within his wrist, its tempo frustratingly irregular. It reminds him a lot of how Dad describes his caffeine intolerance. Both keyed-up and jittery. Thrown to the brink of fight-or-flight but also exhausted to the point of collapse. It’s insufferable, and without the guidance and encouragement of the Gems he has no clue what he’s supposed to do about it.
Although…
His breath quivering as he feels his gemstone glitch out within him yet again, he pulls his phone out of his pocket. (And boy, is he surprised the screen isn’t cracked after the mighty tumble he took up on the hill.) He taps into his messages and— his finger hovering over Connie’s picture for a moment longer than it ought to— (no, don’t worry her, just let her enjoy her space camp)— ultimately selects his dad’s contact.
Pls come quick as you can, he types furiously. Town in danger (???) from new Gem, everyone got poofed. At house.
Send.
The teen slumps back upon the couch, letting himself sink back into its plush, reassuring comfort. There. At least Dad might be able to help. And even if he can’t, well…
(He wipes away that annoying stray tear pooling at the edge of one of his eyes. Childish, he chides himself. Stupid.)
At least it’s better than weathering this storm on his own.
