And ANOTHER THING about My Dark Vanessa...

The part where Vanessa is in college and she goes out to a bar and some random grabs her ass... she calls Strane to tell him about it. He is the only person she's had sex with at that point. And he has so successfully groomed her that she feels like he will actually be comforting to her when she tells him about this assault.

But, instead, he just tells her that he's not mad at her. Because he views her as unrapeable. He views her as someone who was fully consenting at 15 when she couldn't consent, because that's the narrative he has to tell himself to feel okay about what he's done. He has convinced himself, and her, that she wanted everything sexual that he ever did to her so now when she talks about being assaulted in a bar, he can't imagine her not asking for it.

He also sees her as his property. Even when he repeatedly fails to claim and protect her in the ways she imagines he will, he sees her as belonging to him. So when someone else touches her, he only thinks she is telling him because she feels obligated. Because she belongs to him. Not because she is complaining that she was touched inappropriately.

Uggggh this novel is sooo rich.

Ho avuto una tastiera rotta per un sacco di mesi e mi sono ritrovata a fare decine di riassunti lunghissimi con quella tastiera. Aveva un suo modo assurdo di funzionare, tipo che se cliccavi sull'1 ti scriveva la parentesi tonda.

Oggi sono ritornata sui libri a studiare, questa volta con una tastiera nuova comprata qualche giorno fa.

E quindi io che ho fatto...ho iniziato a pigiare i tasti sbagliati che però erano i tasti giusti sulla vecchia e rotta tastiera. La tastiera nuova è perfetta, i tasti corrispondono tutti, ma l'abitudine mi porta comunque a sbagliare.

Tutta sta storia per dire cosa? Per dire che ci si adatta a tutto, anche alle cose che non funzionano come dovrebbero. Anche ai rapporti che non ci fanno bene. Quando poi, finalmente, ci troviamo nella situazione giusta, continuiamo ancora a comportarci come quando eravamo in quella sbagliata e no, non lo facciamo consapevolmente ma solo perché siamo abituati a doverci difendere per sopravvivere e lo facciamo anche quando di difenderci non ce n'è più bisogno.

Ecco, la mia vita è tutta così. Continuo a spingere i tasti sbagliati perché l'ho dovuto fare per tanto tempo. E finisco per risultare cattiva e insensibile, pazza, strana, complicata e ingrata. Pochi hanno la pazienza di aspettare che impari nuovamente a voler bene e lo capisco anche, detto tra noi.
