impulse and skizz being like ''yeah people were really sure it was skizz, so weird, no idea how they guessed that'' when at the end of season 9 in his final stream impulse said ''oh new hermits, maybe you know we'll see'' when no other hermit i saw mentioned that possibility at that time at all and he looked at the camera with such a smile like buddy. we know skzz is your best friend. y'all are talking about gem not having a pokerface? where's your's? we could tell you were really happy about something and it was not hard to guess what or who that something was
and then of course all the other clues like all the many interactions with other hermits really solidified it but that one moment at the end of season 9 already had me veeery suspicious

jen's "Hard-Light Hybrid Steven" headcanon dump
Okay so I'm just making this its own post, because frankly at this point... the original post is so hard to get all the pulp out of due to the headcanons being spread over multiple reblogs and half of it being in the tags.
So here we go. Self indulgent headcanon time. This is how I'm now personally interpreting things within the realm of my own fic work and the post-canon storylines that live in my mind. This is NOT, however, a work of meta- I am by no means suggesting this to be what I see as "canon," only having some fun playing around with ideas I think are cool on a speculative fantasy anatomy level. Take it as you will basically, lol. This is ultimately just for me.
With that stated:
"jen what the fuck do you mean when you say hard-light hybrid Steven, what are you even suggesting"
Essentially I am proposing that Steven becomes progressively more hard-light based in form as he ages. When he was born he was two almost entirely separate halves mashed together- organic and gem- and those two halves slowly but surely merge over the years (hard light replacing organic matter) until one day they are literally inseparable, and Steven is one permanently cohesive being... entirely hewn from hard-light, but with a level of anatomical complexity that still makes him a complete anomaly amongst Gems and humans alike. Instead of the innards of his body being solid light, he is still formed of cells- only now, those cells are entirely hard-light.
His gem is somehow mimicking the form of organic matter with a level of detail that's absolutely unobtainable by shapeshifting or tailored reformation alone. Steven has become the single most complex hard-light system to have ever existed.
Some more specifics on how I imagine this merge working:
Much of the "merging" is natural over time, basically his gem branching out new bits of hard-light circuitry within his body as it integrates within his system.
However, this process is sped up significantly by all the spills and injuries Steven deals with throughout his childhood... because his body's instinctive response to injury is simply to replace damaged cells with hard-light analogues. An almost instantaneous patch job.
Steven's component halves being so distinct early on is a large reason why he takes so long to harness many of his powers.
This is also why Steven's (mostly) organic half is so weakened during the split in Change Your Mind- at that point there's a lot about his anatomy that's been converted to hard-light, so it's basically as if White Diamond yanked the power source out.
(Same idea for why he's so weakened during the movie when his gem's on the fritz... his gem's connection with the rest of his body got partially severed for a time, which. Is not Good for someone who at this point is more hard-light than not hard light.)
At a certain point post-canon, it becomes impossible for Steven's organic and gem halves to be separated. They are so tightly integrated that attempting to remove the gem would only poof him.
Now, here's the thing though...
Steven does not realize that Any of this is taking place until the blunt reality of his strange new anatomical nature is put on display for all to see... when he actually DOES poof.
Here is how (in my own post-canon musings, which I have simplified here because y'all don't live inside all the intensive lore that jangles about my brain) I envision that taking place:
So, Steven would be in his mid to late twenties at this point. He's married to Connie, and they have an infant son.
Recently, there was a fairly severe Gem incident that left Beach City and Little Homeworld pretty damaged. Things are still being mopped up from that.
Steven, Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl head out on a quick mission one day to intercept one of the last few supporters of the Gem who attacked the Crystal Gem's hub of operation, and at first it seems like it's gonna be a straightforward trip.
Then, Steven sees the Gem in question pull a destabilizer wand on Garnet, and- unwilling to watch her to get ripped apart like that again- throws himself in between. He can take it, he thinks. These things never hurt him one bit as a kid
He cannot take it.
He poofs.
His gem unceremoniously falls to the ground, along with the clothes he was wearing and whatever he had in his pockets.
Cue the others going "what the actual FUCK" because based on everything they've ever witnessed and known about him no one had "Steven poofs" on their bingo card.
The insurgent Gem is captured and dealt with, but now... oh, boy. There's literally no playbook for this. Nobody knows what to expect.
Steven's gem is quiet for WEEKS. During that time, the Gems end up consulting the Diamonds on Homeworld to ask for intel on diamond reformation, but none of them are much help- Rose and Steven are the only ones who have actually poofed. Beyond them, this is completely unprecedented.
In a very vague sense, Steven is aware of what must have happened during this time... (even if a part of him wants to deny it, because How???)
He can pick up vague snippets of what's happening just beyond his reach... catching voices and what must be faint sensations of familiar people handling his gem, but beyond that he has no awareness of the passage of time, and he has no means by which to reach out to them mentally.
It takes almost two months for him to finally reform. When he does, his gem quickly shifts through its previous three forms and then just... outright h a n g s for a while on the new one... as if what's trying to "load" up is so complex it's goddamn buffering.
Tumblr media
(my brain can only think of This image uyhjfsdbyuhjfg)
No one really knows what to expect but when he finally reforms, he... looks mostly the same? Still rather human in appearance, externally? The only notable difference is that his irises are pink now. (But with no diamond pupil- not unless he's going Full Power Mode.)
Steven also reforms WITH an outfit much like a Gem would.
The second he's back, he runs to embrace Connie (who is sobbing in relief) and asks how long he was out.
And he did NOT anticipate that answer to be two months.
As it turns out, he missed quite a few baby milestones while he was gone, and he feels horrible about it- it's not his fault of course, but he feels so bad that Connie had to go that long without his support, and that there's all those special "firsts" with his son he'll never get to experience.
This whole incident marks Steven's final "retirement" from participating in real combat- he outright tells the Gems to not involve him in any other combat situations unless the whole ass planet is under threat, basically. The potential risks are just not worth it now that he knows how long he'd be out of commission, should he poof once more. He can't put his family through that again.
Now, with all that outlined...
Ways that Steven is Weird now:
He looks rather human- his hair looks like hair and his skin looks like skin- but after he reforms, literally every "cell" of his body is fashioned out of hard-light.
However, if one were to theoretically slice him in half (which I PROMISE I am not going to do, this is only a thought experiment ahahah-), his internal anatomy would glow much like the Gems' do. (See below image for what I mean.) The "human-like" appearance of his skin and hair and other externally visible features does not extend very deep.
Tumblr media
He "bleeds" pink now- but it's only surface, and is all just excess hard-light. No real blood.
His body would no longer show up on a radiograph- just the gem.
Many of his anatomical features (not all of them, though) are now vestigial in certain ways-? Like, various functions have overtly been taken over by his gem... he doesn't need to breathe or have any lifeblood beyond light pumping through his system, so his heart and lungs serve no necessary purpose anymore... but all of these organs still "exist" as like an echo of what once was, perfect mimics of their organic form but hewn from hard-light.
That being said, Connie enjoys the reassurance of his heartbeat, so he retains that function while conscious.
(Not to mention, "breathing" is literally just a habit for him by this point.)
HOWEVER, when he sleeps (another thing he technically doesn't Need to do but does anyways) his breathing and heartbeat stops entirely and it kinda spooks Connie out. The literal only evidence she has that he's still kicking during these times is the soft hum of his gemstone.
He does not have a biological NEED for food or water anymore and can fully operate on exposure to light alone, but he still really enjoys eating and drinking anyways. In fact, he's still able to absorb energy from food... so it's basically like he's over-charging his battery or whatever. He also still experiences taste (so still posesses some form of taste receptors) and instinctively feels "hungry" at meal times, so like... the running theory is that he must have hard-light analogues for all these receptors and neurotransmitters and hormones that communicate sensations like hunger in his system even though their function is entirely redundant with his gem powering everything.
Furthermore, his memories and sense of self and everything one might refer to as "the soul" is stored exclusively in his gem now. Which means, if one could manage to analyze his brain like one could with a human brain, there would be entire sections that simply... don't light up the way that others (such as the parts of the brain that govern motor control, as an example) do. This is because all the "data" once stored there has migrated.
He can fully shapeshift now, if he wanted to.
He can also still visually "age"- it's all based on his mental state, same as before.
But despite being hard-light in nature now, he can still interface with organics in fusion because his form is still so organic in shape and function. He's still the bridge between humanity and gemkind. I like to think that... theoretically... a Gem might be able to fuse with an organic too, but the sheer burden of trying to shapeshift and maintain such cellular complexity is what stops this from happening.
Steven, though? His very existence as a hybrid acted as a template by which hard-light could learn to understand organic life. He is still an intensely unique being, even IF he no longer consists of any actual organic matter.
_
I am sure I will probably add something to this later, but for now, those are all my musings.
Anyways, thank you for taking a brief visit to the deepest recesses of my brain, where I am chewing at the drywall and bouncing around the room like a cat who has just devoured the goddamn motherlode of catnip. Good night! !! :DDD

The three generations of Beifong parents we've seen seem to be constantly swinging from one extreme parenting style to the other.
Like, of course Lao and Poppy sucked and were overprotective and controlling, we all know this.
Then Toph, compensating for her own stifled childhood, gives her daughters too much freedom, to the point where they feel neglected by her.
And then Su, compensating for her childhood of feeling alone and rejected by her family members is also implied to be a rather overbearing parent. Mind you, shes like much better than Lao and Poppy, but we can see with how she tries to discourage Opal from going to the air temples. And also with Kuvira and Baatar Jr being essentially banished for leaving the city without a reason that was valid in Su's eyes. That last one was also of course due to political beliefs as well, but clearly there was a super personal grudge there.
It's like a fucked up little ourobouros of traumatised earthbenders traumatising their offspring further while thinking they're fixing their parents mistakes.
Also good luck to Su's kids because I can imagine that the subject of family will be a kinda touchy after the many attempts of parricide. I feel like the comics were a little too quick to give Kuvira a nice lil forgiveness moment from the family. Like I would be terrified to have children after seeing my parents fail so spectacularly.

first pic is just from a post of mine from 2019 when we were theorising about season 2 - moomin falls in love came up then and I was a bit obsessed with thinking about how they could adapt it in this new series.
and now, theorising for season 4, la goona has once again been brought up... and I realised that in his video, when he was getting into the snork voice, chance said "here's snork, and you're really strong" who's strong??? how about a literal strongman, emeraldo!!!!! everyone's favourite egg-shaped guy!!
ofc, this could all be completely wrong, but it's fun to theorise!

Mihoyo may have forgotten Su is just as big a nerd as Bronya and Kosma, but I sure haven’t.
Really feels like missed comedic potential though. Like, maybe they could’ve had Su desperately trying to hide that he actually gets Kosma and Bronya’s references, but he keeps having to translate for them, so everyone else is slowly catching on to Su (meanwhile Kevin knows damn well about Su’s mech phase and is desperately trying not to laugh at him). Or maybe have Su be like one of those anime nerds that was really into Akira and other older anime and tries to bond with them over it, but he hasn’t seen anything that was made in like the past 15 years so all his references are incredibly outdated.
Or for other occupation related humor, he could just have extensive knowledge of poisons and dangerous chemicals that just comes up in casual conversation and concerns everyone else around him. Or give him a sorta back and forth with Vill-V on what would or wouldn’t kill a man, but in like the most casual/deadpan tone
I haven’t really thought about this point well enough to articulate it well, but you can derive comedy from someone just being enthusiastically nice. The best example I can think of this is Tanjiro from Demon Slayer
Idk, it just feels like Mihoyo just doesn’t really know what to do with Su a lot of the time

The speculative biology of crystal gems
So i dont know why i thought this but this randomly popped into my head but i was wondering how crystal gems from steven universe work on a biological level and so i got a theory to share. As we know the crystal gems form is just a physical hologram that can be touched and touch things, And that the crystal gems themselves are their gems, Now i also read all tomorrows and so of course i bet you can see where this is going. So what if the crystal gems are like the gravitals, so basically the crystal gems in my theory are almost microscopic organisms that once born are put into a casing (gem), and that the injectors (which intentionally look like bacteriophage that inject dna into bodies) inject crystal gems into earth and perhaps thats their form of asexual reproduction, them birthing a gem and encasing it while injecting it into a planet to absorb organic material to make up their hologram.

fuck it, i'll say an idea i've had for a while now. i think megumi's bio mom was a zen'in too. (yes, it would mean she and toji were related, but like, distantly.) maybe they left the clan together.
this stemmed from the idea that she and toji simply... look alike. lol. but also, it's the reason toji didn't change his name to "fushiguro" until he married tsumiki's mom.
we don't actually even know if toji was married to megumi's mom... but if he was, he'd probably have jumped on the chance to change his name then. but he didn't. maybe because they were both zen'in.

Is it that bad if numerous people but not Chat noir know Ladybug's secret identity ? (with a little comparison to Insomniac Spider-man games)
Spoilers Warning from the recent MArvel Spider-man 2 game on PS5 :
I thought about the fact that at least 6 people are confirmed to know Ladybug's secret's identity at the end ofseason 5 : Alya, Luka, Felix, Kagami, Alix and Su-Han
Tumblr media
And I wondered once why Marinette remains Ladybug while so many people know her secret identity, then I remembered that Spider-man aka Peter Parker also did his best to keep his secret identity from many people and all New Yorkers when he could, and only revealed it to those he trusted the most. And after seeing Marinette struggle many times because of her secret, it's reassuring to know that among her friends, 4 of them won't be affected nor damaged by her secret because they know the reasons behind her absences, delays and bogus excuses
To make another comparison with the Spider-man universe, in the recent Marvel Spider-man 2 game on PS5, with his family and most close friends being aware that he is the second Spider-man, Miles has a more solid and helpfull support system than what Peter had at the same age. While Peter kept his secret to himself for a long time before taking his girlfriend MJ into his confidence
Tumblr media
But was unaware that his Aunt May of that universe also discovered that he was Spider-man at some point, and he only learned about it during her last moments
Tumblr media
And he could not enjoy for long to have his secret also known by best friend Harry in the second game.
Tumblr media
Because Harry fell into a coma shortly after
Tumblr media
But many people close to Miles were made aware of his secret between the Marvel Spider-man game : Miles Morales and the Marvel Spider-man 2 on PS5. And at the end of the Marvel Spdier-man 2 video game, Miles has his mother Rio, his uncle Aaron, his best friend Ganke, and his near girlfriend Hayley aware that he is the second spider-man
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I could see how it made things easier and more bearable for Miles to not hide this secret from his most loved ones.
And I don't want to summerize how difficult and painfull it was for many versions of Peter Paker to hide the fact that they were Spider-man from their loved ones. But Marvel Spider-man 2 shows us that being able to share his responsibilities with a more than competent Miles, of whom Peter is the mentor, or even to be helped by MJ and Harry once in a while is a good thing for Peter, and really seems to lift him some weight from him
Peter being Miles mentor also adds another close friend and confidant for each other
Tumblr media
So yeah I don't think it will be such a bother to have 6 people being aware of Ladybug's secret identity, because they all proved that they could resist akumatization or keep that secret well to themselves : Alya, Luka and Felix all resisted akumatization once, Su-han has a secret technique keeping him safe from akumatization as long as he can spot the akuma, and even though Kagami suspected Marinette of being Ladybug in Perfection and Protection, Monarch didn't manage to find this information in her mind when he akumatized her (also Kagami now has a miracle charm and those can stop and purify akuma and megakuma with positive emotions).
As for Alix, I can only hope that she'll know to be very carefull with the things she know and learnt from her time travels.
The most important thing is for the people aware of Ladybug's secret identity to be reliable with that secret, which is certainly not everyone (I'm thinking about you Nino).
And while Adrichat also knows how to keep a secret, and would definitly be trustfull and reliable with Ladybug's civilian identity (as he showed that he could in the Chat Blanc). The problem is that so far everytime Ladybug and Chat Noir had both been aware of each other secret identities, a catastrophe always ensued, and the Rabbit and Snake power were necessary to fix everything. Now since Gabriel is out of the picture, it would be logic to think that Lila/Chrysalis doesn't pose near the same threat on Adrien's psyche as Gabriel did in Chat Blanc and Ephemeral, and yet the fact that she's aware of a secret that Maribug will be forced by the scenario to keep from Chat Noir could make everything worse if Adrien also knew that both Marinette and Ladybug are the same.
As long as there's a risk for Chat Noir and Ladybug love between them as Marinette and Adrien to be exploited, it's still not safe for them to know about who is behind the mask of their partner.
And after almost being akumatized thrice, Marinette would not be able to trust herself with Chat noir's secret identity neither. Let's at least take solace into the fact that Marinette and Adrien are both aware that Luka knows Ladybug AND Chat Noir seret's identies, and thus could eventually request Luka's help to act as a bridge between them (not knowing how frustrating such a thing would be for poor Luka ^^')
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although ... given Lila's skills at manipulation (or rather at making everyone intelligence spectcularly drop), Alya would be the more at risk to reveal Ladybug's secret identity, if Lila isn't already aware of it that is (I sure hope that's not the case T_T)
But I'm also hoping that season 6 will manage to exploit well the fact that Kagami and Felix also know that Ladybug and Marinette are one and the same, because with what Lila/Cerise and soon to be Chrysalis probably has in store for Maribug, the ladybug heroin will definitly need reliable allies and friends on her side, especially somoene as intelligent and cunning as Felix. And while Kagami and Felix still need to prove themselves to me, there's a good potential for a future dynamic between them and Marinette. Or maybe my hopes are for naugths and Felix and Kagami will be side character without a good development T^T

Do you think Su-Han was so against Marinette being a Guardian because she's a girl? I mean, he's been gone for probably around 173 years before being brought back after Feast was defeated. Not to mention of the Guardians we see, both in person and in flashbacks, they're all male.
Honestly, it’s hard to say.
Cause Su Han seemed to concede pretty quick on things, mostly pissed off about all the infractions against the rules. Plus he showed Marinette more respect than Fu. (Insulting Fu until the end).
It’s possible but I don’t think it’s a definitive.

re: that last post I reblogged about 3zun and each of their respective efforts into trying to make the sworn brotherhood work
while I do absolutely agree that they are all trying, if you asked me to tell you which member of the venerated triad is actually trying the hardest to reconcile the diametrically opposed worldviews of his sworn brothers and his obligations to his sect and family (rather than trying to strong-arm reality to align with his own worldview, or not look too closely at the intensity of the conflict that is developing within these relationships)

Completely for-fun speculation don’t take anything too seriously I’m kind of just fooling around
Guys what if there was an era before the previous era, and that era was Genshin’s time.
I like the idea that the Kaslanas ran Celestia, so what if the reason Kevin seemed to be so talented in athletics was hidden, dormant genes of “divine origin”?
The previous era taking place after Celestia was overthrown and the people of Teyvat began to make their way towards the outer surface of the planet rather than the inside, the former Celestial gods sent down as humans as punishment. They all had white hair and blue or gold eyes, and were noticeably stronger than other humans, their strength still on-par with other gods like the Archons. Generation after generation those abilities dimmed significantly when we reach Kevin.
Maybe Haitham was reincarnated into Su? People did want Haitham to be the next Grand Sage, and Su is called a sage sometimes. It would be a fun twist for such an analytical character to be reborn as a highly empathetic one.
Feel free to add onto this, I had this sort of crack idea and thought others would find it interesting too.

Blue Diamond Au
First post, yay. This is scary. Anyways this is my thoughts and reasoning on how the blue diamond au would work in canon for Steven universe. I'm just going to be rambling, so sorry if you get bored.
So the diamond authority, the very beginning. I think that the first big divergence in the main plot is that blue diamond gets earth as a colony or that pink has earth first but after her want to stop colonizing earth, blue decides instead to take control of earth compared to pink starting a uprising. So blue has earth now, either way works, but how do we make blue sympathize with the organic life forms? Well she sees the ways that animals and human communities are so emotional driven. So now that she's liking the the organics, she wants to protect them. Another thing I want to point out is that the diamonds authority and it's leadership is the same, so the diamonds have the same shape. So the crystal gems are formed, I think that blue would still have her pearl that she has in the show as she wouldn't be the one to physically lash out as pink did to volleyball. So blue pearl is there. Then I think amethyst would stay relatively the same personality wise, she might looked a bit different to fit the aesthetic of the others. I think garnet would be the same too because garnet form the show was part of blue diamonds court, I imagine the fusing and recruitment would play out differently but we would have the same sapphire and ruby. Maybe garnet is more like sapphire, physically and aesthetically? Tell me you ideas in the replies?
So we got the main group, white, yellow, and pink did the mega blast. I think instead of a star symbol for the crystal gems, it's a heart because blue is so emotional that it would make sense visually for a heart. I think that blues weapons would be a estoc or tuck sword with a treat drop handle. I think that the time between the end of the war and greg is relatively stays the same, maybe the temple in in a forest near beach City or if it is by the beach, then the statue would slightly different? Anyways, I think that blue still ends up at Greg but maybe Greg is in a different profession, like into more classical instruments. I find that Steven would be tall and with black hair, emo. And blue would have been transformed into a lapis lazuli or s blue hally agate. Anyways, tell me what you agree with and disagree with. Got some of my ideas from diamonds au video form the roundtable
Buh bye.

The Naval Treaty pt 2
Here we are, back again. Last time we learnt about Watson's previous life as a school bully and I took an instant and entirely unsupported-by-the-text dislike to a man named Joseph Harrison because he was described as being nice.
This is also a problem I sometimes have in real life, btw. I am suspicious of people who seem too outwardly open and friendly. My brain assumes that they are hiding something. Maybe my soul is broken.
I'm still convinced he's a secret puppy-murdering villain, though.
"I was a happy and successful man, Mr. Holmes, and on the eve of being married, when a sudden and dreadful misfortune wrecked all my prospects in life."
Look, look, look. If there's one thing these stories have told me it's that in Sherlock Holmes world the time just before you're married is the most dangerous time in your life. Evil parents, lost loves, evil exes and all sorts of foul fiends crawl out of the woodwork of your past and try to drag you down. Engaged people should have constant bodyguards in this world.
"They should not leave my bureau were it not that it is absolutely necessary to have them copied."
I'm feeling like I'm about to have a bit of a rant about opsec and how to protect confidential documents. Percy, if you take this treaty offsite, we're gonna be having words.
“Excuse me an instant,” said Holmes. “Were you alone during this conversation?”
Exactly what I was thinking. Did you take proper precautions before talking about the secret documents that you were going to be moving from their secure location? Was anyone listening at a keyhole?
“My uncle's voice is always remarkably low. I hardly spoke at all.”
His uncle whispers constantly. Is that because he feels like true authority never shouts? Or does he have some sort of a condition? Does he just smoke so much that now he constantly has a rasp?
"One of them in my room, Charles Gorot, had some arrears of work to make up, so I left him there and went out to dine."
You mean he's working on these top secret documents and locking them up in a shared office space. But the other people sharing his office do not have the clearance to work with them? And he just... left the building? With someone else right there?
Nope. Nuhuh. If they're as important and secret as indicated, could he not have a private office for the duration. You said he's working on these after hours, so you could totally lock him in a separate room with a guard on the door (it's a fire hazard, but it's the Victorian Era, so I don't think they cared). Are there no free rooms available in this building at all? Have you never had this situation come up before?
Also, those desk drawer locks are not very secure.
“When I came to examine the treaty I saw at once that it was of such importance that my uncle had been guilty of no exaggeration in what he had said. Without going into details, I may say that it defined the position of Great Britain towards the Triple Alliance, and fore-shadowed the policy which this country would pursue in the event of the French fleet gaining a complete ascendancy over that of Italy in the Mediterranean."
Percy. That's too much detail. No. You don't talk about it. You don't talk about it. Oh my god. You are bad at this. If it's so secret that no one in your office was supposed to know about it's existence in that office, then it's way too secret for you to just go about telling these two guys who just rolled up - one of whom used to beat you with wicket stumps - anything about its contents.
Percy... please...
Tumblr media
(image from Wikipedia)
“It was a long document, written in the French language, and containing twenty-six separate articles. I copied as quickly as I could, but at nine o'clock I had only done nine articles, and it seemed hopeless for me to attempt to catch my train."
There is a theme in these stories of people being set tasks to copy out documents that are too long for the copying time allotted. Did ACD have a job as a copyist at some point. This feels like some shade coming from personal experience to me.
A quick glance at his biography doesn't give me any indication of that, but does reference his school being run on 'medieval principles' and I can well imagine that one of the things they were forced to do was copying. But that is only my imagination.
Also, I can empathise so much with Percy here. The 'oh god, I'm going to miss my train and be stuck here if I don't finish this work soon' feeling is real and valid and very upsetting.
"I was feeling drowsy and stupid, partly from my dinner and also from the effects of a long day's work. A cup of coffee would clear my brain."
Accent on the stupid, I fear. Are you about to leave this top secret document on your desk while you go looking for your caffeine fix. Say it ain't so.
"I rang the bell, therefore, to summon him."
I stand corrected. And wow - personal delivery service of hot beverages at the office. How times have changed!
Although, since I now work from home I do get biscuits delivered to my desk every day, so I can't really complain.
“To my surprise, it was a woman who answered the summons, a large, coarse-faced, elderly woman, in an apron. She explained that she was the commissionaire's wife, who did the charing, and I gave her the order for the coffee."
OK, problem number 1 - your own colleagues weren't high enough clearance to be in the room when you're copying this, but the commissionaire is?
Problem number 2 - you don't recognise this lady. She says she's the commissionaire's wife, but do you know that. And even if you do know that, does she have clearance for this document?
ALSO - 'large' and 'coarse-faced' given the time period, this could well be indicative that this is a man disguised as a woman.
“I wrote two more articles and then, feeling more drowsy than ever, I rose and walked up and down the room to stretch my legs. My coffee had not yet come, and I wondered what was the cause of the delay could be."
Oh Percy.
Oh Percy you didn't.
You went and left it sitting on the goddamn desk didn't you?
Clean. Desk. Policy. NEVER LEAVE ANY DOCUMENTS ON YOUR DESK WHEN YOU ARE NOT AT IT. This is basic security protocol if you work with sensitive material, Percy. It's not difficult. This isn't something you do every day so you don't even have the excuse of just forgetting this one time. This is a specific document that you have clearly been told is not to be removed from its locked drawer except in exceptional circumstances. And you're wandering around the halls and leaving it just lying there. After having spoken to a woman you don't know with it right in front of her.
Tumblr media
Oooh, we get a map. I love maps.
I thought for a minute the map was going to prove that there was only one corridor between his room and the commissionaire's office, meaning that if anyone went past, he'd see them, making him leaving the document on the desk almost acceptable. But no. There's a second corridor off. The man is a muppet.
Please have this image of an infinitely better Percy to tide you over:

"Then I put out my hand and was about to shake the man, who was still sleeping soundly, when a bell over his head rang loudly, and he woke with a start."
First instinct is that he was drugged.
But the commissionaire seems to know about the coffee... which he wouldnt' if the woman hadn't told him about it. So was she his wife? Was I off track with that? Or is she telling different lies to both parties?
“‘If you was here, sir, then who rang the bell?’ he asked.
GHOSTS!
I mean, no, but once again we have a horror movie sort of line.
“A cold hand seemed to close round my heart. Some one, then, was in that room where my precious treaty lay upon the table. I ran frantically up the stair and along the passage. There was no one in the corridors, Mr. Holmes. There was no one in the room. All was exactly as I left it, save only that the papers which had been committed to my care had been taken from the desk on which they lay. The copy was there, and the original was gone.”
I know I say this a lot but: Oh no! Who could ever have foreseen that this would happen? What a totally unpreventable occurrence! Clearly nothing could have been done to stop this. Fate is so cruel.
So nice of them to leave the unfinished copy, though.
“I recognized in an instant that the thief must have come up the stairs from the side door. Of course I must have met him if he had come the other way.”
Wow, look at that braincell chugging along. If only you had thought of this before.
"It was quarter to ten.” “That is of enormous importance,” said Holmes, making a note upon his shirt-cuff.
Obviously.
I feel like this might be because of train times. We had that comment before about Percy being afraid he'd miss his train, and now the time is important. Train timetables are where my brain automatically went to. Quick! To the Bradshaw's!
“‘Ah, that is only my wife,’ cried the commissionaire; ‘has no one else passed?’"
So either the wife is involved, or his wife is currently being impersonated. Which is a difficult task to pull off to the person's spouse, so I'm inclined to believe that his wife is just tall and coarse-faced and in league with Joseph Harrison (Stop looking at me like that! He'll be involved somehow. 'How could he possibly have known about Percy copying the treaty?' you ask. I don't know, there are two more parts of this story left. That guy's bad news. I feel it.)
“But I was not satisfied, and the attempts which he made to draw me away increased my suspicions. “‘Which way did the woman go?’ I cried. “‘I don't know, sir. I noticed her pass, but I had no special reason for watching her. She seemed to be in a hurry.’"
Like she was smuggling stolen documents???
Also, Percy is engaging his brain here. It might not be the right solution, but at least he isn't just blindly trusting that the commissionaire's wife is fine. She saw the document, he hasn't seen her since, she left after the document was stolen.
“‘You're only wasting your time, sir, and every minute now is of importance,’ cried the commissionaire; ‘take my word for it that my old woman has nothing to do with it, and come down to the other end of the street."
OK, commissionaire's also sus. We do not trust him. Maybe he isn't married at all. Maybe he's just been paid off by Joseph Harrison who is posing as his wife with a paisley scarf.
Still doesn't solve the question of how Harrison would know about the document. Unless the commissionaire was paid to tip him off about anything weird going on so he could capitalise on it. Possible.
It also doesn't explain the bell.
Why the bell? Why summon them back to the room when you're about to make your escape? I can't think of a reason for that to be a good idea. Although we only have the commissionaire's word it was the bell in Percy's office. Could have been any bell. But even then, why did they need him to find the documents gone right then and there?
Always possible someone was standing behind the door when they came in and in his panic Percy just didn't think to look around at that point. Classic locked room mystery trick, although this time there wasn't even a locked room.
“‘16 Ivy Lane, Brixton,’ he answered. ‘But don't let yourself be drawn away upon a false scent, Mr. Phelps. Come to the other end of the street and let us see if we can hear of anything.’"
This is a reasonable line for the commissionaire to take if the lady is his wife, but at the same time, there's something about the way in which it is phrased that still fills me with suspicion. 'don't let yourself be drawn away upon a false scent' is so very odd a way to say it. You'd expect more protesting his wife's innocence. The values of her character that mean she would never. This reads like someone who is very intent that Percy should indeed be drawn away upon a false scent, just the one he's dangling in front of him.
“Nothing was to be lost by following his advice."
Nooooo. Percy. You should have kept going. Believe in yourself. Sure, up to this point you've been pretty rubbish at this whole spy thing, but these were good instincts.
“How is it, then, that the woman who came into the room about nine left no traces with her muddy boots?” “I am glad you raised the point. It occurred to me at the time. The charwomen are in the habit of taking off their boots at the commissionaire's office, and putting on list slippers.”
This did not occur to me, but cool little bit of evidence, and nice to see Percy using his brain again. The man clearly used wisdom as a dump stat, but his intelligence is pretty high.
“We examined the room also. There is no possibility of a secret door, and the windows are quite thirty feet from the ground. Both of them were fastened on the inside. The carpet prevents any possibility of a trap-door, and the ceiling is of the ordinary whitewashed kind. I will pledge my life that whoever stole my papers could only have come through the door.”
Our options are these: it was the wife, or it was a third person who hid behind the door when you came into the room and then escaped while you were busy chasing after the thief you assumed had already left. The ringing of the bell makes no sense in either of these cases because it would be easier to just walk out without attracting attention back to where you are. it's not like they needed you to unlock the door. Why did the bell ring? Was it an accident?
“They use none. There is a stove. The bell-rope hangs from the wire just to the right of my desk. Whoever rang it must have come right up to the desk to do it. But why should any criminal wish to ring the bell? It is a most insoluble mystery.”
Precisely! I'm sure it's not insoluble, but as the case stands currently, I cannot make it make sense unless it was a mistake. But pulling a bell by accident is a strange sort of accident to have.
A young woman opened the door, who proved to be Mrs. Tangey's eldest daughter. Her mother had not come back yet, and we were shown into the front room to wait. “About ten minutes later a knock came at the door, and here we made the one serious mistake for which I blame myself. Instead of opening the door ourselves, we allowed the girl to do so. We heard her say, ‘Mother, there are two men in the house waiting to see you,’"
That's your serious mistake?
I mean, yeah, it's bad, but I think that is just the most recent in a series.
OK, so either the commissionaire has a wife OR the young woman is also caught up in this affair. It's becoming more convoluted to believe the commissionaire is involved, but if he isn't involved then are we to assume that old woman number 1 was indeed his wife and old woman 2 was an imposter. Or are they both his wife and he just doesn't know she's involved. He is sus, but his involvement makes everything more complicated and to occam's razor the thing, one thief is more likely than a conspiracy.
“Then for the first time the horror of my situation came in its full force. Hitherto I had been acting, and action had numbed thought. I had been so confident of regaining the treaty at once that I had not dared to think of what would be the consequence if I failed to do so."
Percy isn't very good at thinking ahead, apparently.
"It was horrible. Watson there would tell you that I was a nervous, sensitive boy at school."
Maybe that was because people beat you with sticks.
"What though I was the victim of an extraordinary accident? No allowance is made for accidents where diplomatic interests are at stake."
Uh, my dude. This wasn't an accident. This was negligence. You should totally be fired for this. Sorry.
"Here I have lain, Mr. Holmes, for over nine weeks, unconscious, and raving with brain-fever.[...]Slowly my reason has cleared, but it is only during the last three days that my memory has quite returned."
90% that the motive was not political because after 9 weeks there's no way a political threat hasn't already taken the papers and used them. No way of resolving that. But these stories often end with 'well, we can't get the bad guy', so maybe not. But I can't see them doing that in a case of national security because they tend to be fairly patriotic. It has to be somewhere close for there to be any chance of recovering the treaty.
"If you fail me, then my honor as well as my position are forever forfeited.”
You should already have lost your position. The only reason for you keeping it right now is nepotism. You were given a top secret document. You, through negligence, allowed it to be stolen. That's not even a vaguely unreasonable dismissal.
“There is one of the very utmost importance, however. Did you tell any one that you had this special task to perform?”
This is the one sticking point for my Joseph Harrison blame party. How would he have known? Unless he didn't know how important the document was, but then what's even the point?
"The authorities are excellent at amassing facts, though they do not always use them to advantage. What a lovely thing a rose is!”
Holy non sequitur, Batman!
“There is nothing in which deduction is so necessary as in religion,” said he, leaning with his back against the shutters. “It can be built up as an exact science by the reasoner. Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All other things, our powers our desires, our food, are all really necessary for our existence in the first instance. But this rose is an extra. Its smell and its color are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it. It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again that we have much to hope from the flowers.”
O...kay... Objection: relevance?
“You suspect some one?” “I suspect myself.” “What!” “Of coming to conclusions too rapidly.”
Not helpful, Holmes.
“Then go to London and test your conclusions.” “Your advice is very excellent, Miss Harrison,” said Holmes, rising. “I think, Watson, we cannot do better. Do not allow yourself to indulge in false hopes, Mr. Phelps. The affair is a very tangled one.”
Oof, Miss Harrison is very direct. I like that. I hope she isn't involved, but I can't currently see a motive for her. 'Stop talking about roses and go do your job.' Heh.
“He was cold, but not harsh. I dare say my severe illness prevented him from being that. He repeated that the matter was of the utmost importance, and added that no steps would be taken about my future—by which he means, of course, my dismissal—until my health was restored and I had an opportunity of repairing my misfortune.”
I guess firing someone with brain fever does come across as a bit rude. Maybe I'm just mean.
I hope to conclude the tale in my next email.
But it says 2 of 4, Watson?
I'm still sure that Joseph Harrison has something to do with it. Sure, there's literally 0 evidence of that. He hasn't even been mentioned in this section that I've seen. He has no way of knowing about the document, no evidence that he was there. No evidence of motive (except that his sister is getting married and that makes people commit crimes sometimes apparently). But I don't like him, so I will persist.
We've got a mysterious bell, a fleeing woman who may or may not have been the commissionaire's wife and a document that no one should have known Percy had.
The only people who knew about the document were Percy, his uncle and the woman who came to take his coffee order, as far as we know.
So either one of them told someone, the crime was merely opportunity based and not specific to that document, or one of them committed the crime.
We're going to discount Percy because why would he call in Holmes if he did it himself and he's been pretty clear and explicit in his insistence that he did not tell anyone.
His uncle could have told someone. No doubt other people were aware that a copy needed to be made and could have made extrapolations, but that seems too distanced from the narrative at this point. His uncle could have stolen the treaty himself, but it seems unlikely he'd be involved in treason based on what we've seen of him. We have no motive for his treason.
Would the commissionaire's wife be able to read French legalese? Maybe? Was the woman even the commissionaire's wife. Or perhaps the wife herself is uninvolved. She came, took the coffee... but then how would her imposter know about the document?
Whoever the woman who took the coffee order was, they're the only person who had a chance to see the document. But why would anyone think to impersonate the commissionaire's wife if they didn't already know about the treaty? I keep going round in circles.
And the bell is still weird. Accident or lure? But why lure? How accident? Hmmmm...
