I'm more excited to find out more about the past avatars than to get new avatars, honestly, but that might just be me.

Avatar Roku’s big mistake was doing nothing decisive about Sozin. He says as much himself. What’s interesting is a very common critique of him extrapolates further, saying he did nothing noteworthy at all.

I disagree. ATLA is a story about Aang. The narrative orbits Aang. He’s The Guy. All we need to know about Roku is how his life relates to The Last Airbender’s life. I think Roku was a good avatar, but he was an even better (though imperfect) mentor. Everything he said was to lift up Aang, and erase himself. It’s a combo of his self-effacing nature and just good writing to keep the narrative tight.

Roku talks about Sozin much more than the longtime love of his life. That’s not because he loved Sozin much more than Ta Min, it’s to set up a direct parallel to Aang & Zuko, a very timely hint at generational healing.

When he does touch on Ta Min, the main focus is on his complete awkwardness around her. He knows Aang is having big first crush angst. Although saving the world is foremost on everyone’s mind, Aang is thirteen and the need for hope in the ways of love is likely just as pressing for him. Seeing the past avatar struggle with this and still find love probably brought Aang a lot of subconscious peace of mind.

What stood out to me the most to me: Roku doesn’t even mention his own children. Is that because he doesn’t care about them? You cannot convince me that’s true. Now, if he didn’t even mention them, he definitely won’t regale Aang with tales of raising Fang (not canonically confirmed), or pushing for legal restrictions on dragon-poaching (which canonically exploded in popularity only after his death), or bringing about tedious peace between the Northern Water Tribe and the Earth Kingdom (also canon), especially not when time is of the essence & Ozai’s lit a candle under everyone’s ass…

Maybe if someone like Bumi had been the previous avatar we’d get some random stories like that, winding wildly back to a lesson that solves everything. But not with Roku, he’s gonna show Aang what it was like, and what it could be again, subtlety nudging him in the right direction for the world: making peace with Zuko.

Past glories do not matter so much as the possibility of future peace.

(ATLA) Giving Ta Min a backstory

I always said that many Avatars' partners need a more fleshed out backstory, specially Ta Min (Roku's wife), Ummi (Kuruk's fiancé) and Katara (after ATLA). Today I'll give some agenda to Ta Min's character...

Ta Min (b. c. 82 BG) was Avatar Roku's wife and a Fire Nation noblewoman. The series' encyclopedia says: born into one of the wealthiest families in the Fire Nation, Ta Min always thought that she would marry someone in the royal family. But then, she met Roku and was attracted to his persistence, kindness, and intelligence. She never stopped loving Roku, even after he died. She never remarried and quietly lived out the rest of her days on Ember Island.

That's all we got from this Avatar's love, and I think it's time we do her some justice. So, how can we give Ta Min a backstory? Well, she was a noble, so her family should trace its origin back to one of the clans we met in 'The Shadow of Kyoshi'. Only five clans are mentioned by Rangi: Saowon (lady Huazo's), Keohso (lady Sulan's), Sei'naka (Rangi's), Inta and Lahaisin. As we know, the clans tend to name their offspring after a significant syllable or letter of their familyname (Hei-Ran and Rangi; Ilah and Iroh; Chaejin and Chaeryu; Sozin, Azulon, Ozai, Zuko and Izumi...), so Ta Min's family must have follow this tradition. 'The Shadow of Kyoshi' also tells us that the Inta clan controls trade with the Earth Kingdom, meanwhile the Lahaisins are in charge of the passage of many sea routes. By the 3rd Century BG, both families fell in disrepair because of the Fifth Nation and the sacking of their islands and fortresses by Fire Lord Zoryu.

However, I think both clans could've made peace with the Fire Lord, and thus the Inta clan was still in control of trade with the Earth Kingdom by the 1st Century BG. The Intas are the best clan for Ta Min: first, Ta Min and Inta share the ta syllable, which could be the one passed from generation to generation; second, the control of trade would explain why they were one of the richest families, living in Hari Bulkan and being part of the Royal Court; Third, what better backstory for the Avatar's wife than that of an international family traveling through the Earth Kingdom? It fits perfectly!

Therefore, Ta Min was born the same Summer Roku and Sozin were, in 82 BG, to Tanu and Min Su (I made up their names, yes). Their home island could be... Jonduri? Makes sense, since it was an island controlled by Shang Merchants, and its inhospitable environment would explain why the family chose to live in the capital. Other options are Kirachu Island―famous for its delectable and spicy food―and Hing Wa, where ash bananas―which are later exported―grow. If 'The Dawn of Yangchen' secquel leaves Jonduri's fate open, I'll go with that island, which looks (almost) uninhabited and (almost) deserted by Aang's Era.

She grew up in Hari Bulkan and she must have attended the Royal Fire Academy for Girls. I wonder if she was a firebender, but perhaps diplomacy, cultural knowledge and politics were her forte. Anyway, I headcanon she was a bender and part of Roku's team Avatar along Sud, Taqukaq, Gyatso and possibly Sozin―this last one for a time, at least.

Ta Min's parents died when she was just seventeen. Many nobles wanted to take over her family's business, so the young woman sought Prince Sozin's help. She wanted to keep her father's loom at all costs, since the silk business with the Earth Kingdom was very profitable, but even the Fire Lord (Sozin’s father) doubted that Ta Min could manage the business, especially since she had rarely set foot in the factories. Roku's family was her great ally: Roku's father loyally managed the looms, but always under Ta Min’s orders. In time, Roku’s parents made Ta Min their heiress, since Roku had to maintain his role as the Avatar. Of course, they were targeted by the Guiding Wind...

Ta Min was a brilliant and highly educated woman, interested in poetry, astronomy, physics, music, mathematics, and geometry. She never liked easy things and that is why Roku always saw her as someone admirable, unpredictable and shrewd. For Sozin, Ta Min was unsettling...

Hope you like Ta Min's fleshed out backstory. Gosh, how I'd love to work in Avatar Studios or writing the novels like FC Yee does...

Nous avons remonté la baie jusqu’à l’Île de Baffin, contourné l’Île Somerset, puis nous sommes repartis au sud en longeant l’Île du Prince-de-Galles, avant que l’on me dépose au Glacier de Fharhond, là où Roald Amundsen et son équipage ont été aperçus pour la dernière fois il y a deux ans. En ce début d’été, les températures sont les plus douces de l’année, puisqu’il y fait quelques degrés à peine en dessous de zéro.

here's the opening passage to fic 2 of echo bren which i really enjoy re-reading, because i'm weirdly affectionate about hobbyist fishing when it's done by people who aren't good at it

The house itself is not much larger than the average family home in the center of the Candles, but it is made massive by the optical illusion of being set in the middle of the forest instead. Fifteen minutes’ walk away, a sizeable lake of foaming teal water froths and stills and froths again under the beating wind, all of the suds scumming on the surface from the soapbark trees around. On a lucky day, they have caught fish in that lake: iridescent-scaled, cranky little things that pop out of the water with a temper, snapping and cracking around on the soil until Caleb throws them in the bin to make a lethally good sashimi out of later. 

Today, they stand in front of the lake, Caleb in his unflattering fisherman’s hat, Essek in his massive swathe of an injurious-looking suncape, and together they fish and fish and catch absolutely nothing.

“We’re fools,” huffs Caleb. “It’s Da’leysen.”

“The fish are not any less active on the weekend, Caleb.”

“No,” says Caleb. He turns to Essek in the eye-sizzling sunlight, shaded so sharply by the hat that his face looks small and dark as a hole underneath a dome of yellow. “We told him Da’leysen. We should have told him that we would summon him Miresen. I have an outing later today to chaperone. I won’t be getting home in time.”

On traverse les Atlas, moyen et haut, sans y croiser la neige que nous avions eu vers Ifrane. On en profite donc pour une courte virée dans la forêt de cèdres avec l’espoir de croiser quelques singes magots qui nous attendent en nombre et directement sur le parking. Pas grand chose de plus ici …

On file donc vers le sud pour rejoindre Tinghir en fin de journée où l’on passera la nuit dans une chambre d’hôte face a la palmeraie. Meilleure nuit jusqu’ici 😇

Avant de reprendre la route, visite de la palmeraie qui démarre juste en sortie des gorges du Todgha, juste après la source des poissons sacrés : cultures de blé (évidemment), de luzerne, de maïs et quelques carrés de carottes entourés de menthe. À midi on file vers le désert.
