Uuugh there are so many cheap Tamagotchi Connection on Ebay. I'm considering opening an account there, though I'm kinda scared. I still don't have almost any experience with online shopping (I wasn't allowed to do it at home.) It just creeps me out. But I want a functioning Connection Tama so badly - my two V5.5 don't work anymore and I'm not sure I can fix them. I hope there will be a re-release of this line during the nearest anniversary. I'd buy like 3 of them

Does high weight negatively affect tamagotchis on the connection releases? I haven't found any solid information if it does or not, and it doesn't seem to be related to how care mistakes work. (I do know that on the Tama-Go and Osutchi and Mesutchi there are negative effects to reaching 99lbs.)
On the Plus/V1, being over 80g will make your Tamagotchi perform worse on connection games (this probably extends to all versions connecting on V1 mode).
On the Keitai series being over 80g will make them very likely to end up last on the racing / swimming game (but since you can bet on them losing, it can be a good thing).
On the V2 high weight will make it impossible to get very far on the jump game, but it makes it easier to win bump.
On the V3 high weight makes it easier to win bump, unsure if there's another game that's affected by weight too.
On the V4 high weight seems to make it more likely for your character to become an universal adult, which would make this the only version where it has a negative impact on growth.
On both the V4 and the V4.5 it also seems to make it harder to get jobs.
On the Entama and Uratama it seems to have no negative effects.
On the family ones (V5 & V5.5) there's no weight at all, but overfeeding adults until they can't eat anymore several times will make them transform into the large family.

Why does nobody have photos of the "tamagotchi babysitters" that the school teachers hated? You know, the person who had the lanyard with everyone else's toy attached to it and they spent all of class taking care of them

Celebrity Cruise Ship
When the Royal Dream Family Tamagotchi Plus was released on Japan and the Tamagotchi Connection Version 5 Celebrity was released in the USA and Asia/Oceania regions, a cruise ship appeared docked in front of the main Pavilion. On board is the Gotchi King and his family, as well as several celebrity characters. The Cruise Ship included several additional games.

I wanted to talk about the Connection era Tamagotchis and their version differences. When I was younger and didn't really pay much attention to the Japanese releases of these models I always assumed that the English and Japanese releases were the same. Or as similar as they can be to account for language and regional variations. I have fairly recently realized that that isn't the case at all. Since I recently got back into Tamagotchi and had a bit of income to play with I have been able to grab a few Japanese releases and a lot of stuff didn't make sense to me until I dug deeper.
Right off the bat I'm just going to say that of the V1-V5.5 the only versions with what I'm considering having regional parity are the V1, V5 and the V5.5. Basically every other English version of Tamagotchi Connection has been pulled out of the ether as some type of Frankenstein device that pulls inspiration from the more recent Japanese model and from past versions.
The V2: This is the first instance of the differences but when you get down to it the main difference mainly boils down to just adding more characters to the Japanese V2 release (Which is called the Keitai among most fans). The Keitai basically only had 2-3 more characters than the V1 which is a step up for sure but the V2 had significantly more than that. I believe something like 10-15 but I could be wrong. The Keitai added cellphone support to allow players to get codes and items into their device. This feature did not reach the V2 in any form.
The V3: This is where you really start to see the Frankenstein take form. The V3 has no equivalent Japanese release. It has an antenna that was lifted directly from the Keitai and it added support for a site called TamaTown. TamaTown was a flash based site where you could send your Tamagotchi and get gifts and items but the functionality at this point was very minimal. TamaTown was a feature lifted from the current Japanese release called the Entama (I'll talk more about that one later) and compared to the Japanese version was very very stripped down.
The V2 and V3 filled the character rosters with characters from older and classic models of Tamagotchi. A lot of them from Japanese exclusive releases which would make these the first time many people were able to meet these characters without importing.
The V4 and V4.5: Here is where the parity very slightly starts to come back into play, these two models were based on the Entama and UraTama respectively. For the most part the V4 series are toned down and simplified remasters of the Entama/UraTama consisting of 2 babies and 4 child characters to the Japanese versions 6 each. It may seem counter productive to remove characters at this point but when you take into account that the child characters were able to be either gender and grow into any of the families it added a bit of variety to every growth even if they would eventually end up as the same adult character in the end. The V4 series are the first models since the V1 to retain almost every adult character from the Japanese release with almost no changes. It is worth noting however that the En/Uras special family got replaced with a new family only in the V4 series however. Outside of those changes you would basically be experiencing the same characters between either release.
There are a lot more differences to go into such as the games being different a lot of the time between releases and items being cut/added but I am running out of steam so I'll just end it on that note.

Tamagotchi Connection and Plus series, comparison
The Tamagotchi Connection series is comprised of the Tamagotchi released in the west during the aughts, starting with the V1 and ending with the Friends.
The Tamagotchi Plus series is comprised of the Tamagotchi released in Japan during that same period of time. The Connection releases up to the V5.5 were based on these Japanese releases. But only the V1, V5 and V5.5 had mostly the same gameplay as their Japanese counterparts. The others were quite different so I would like to talk about these differences. because if i see the keitai getting called “japanese V3” or the entama getting called “japanese V4” one more time i WILL start biting people
So let’s start with the Japanese releases.
The Plus was the first release, introducing the IR communication. It was pretty basic in terms of functionality, but it had some charm that is missing from the future releases, like the idle animations and each adult tier having their own food.
If you had a Plus in Japan in 2004, you would have access to something we never got in the west: the Deka Tamagotchi.
All it did at this point was play a little animation with your own Tamagotchi, but this wasn’t the case for the next release, the Keitai series.
The Keitai series introduced the concept of money (Gotchi Points) in Tamagotchi. And with it, naturally, several items to buy. But the Keitai does not have a built-in shop, it just has a vendor that comes by at certain times and brings one item to sell. This is because, just like the matchmaker is a last resort in case you can’t connect with another device, the vendor is meant to be a way of getting items the days you didn’t have access to your nearest Deka Tama Shop or a phone with the Keitai app.
Similarly, there are just 3 built-in games and winning them only gets you 100 points. This is because you are meant to also be able to go to the Deka Tamagotchi Game Center, which had 5 games more. The phone app is not well documented, but it probably had more things to do other than shop.
The Entama and Uratama also relied on the Deka releases like this, but instead of the phone app it had e-tamago, the Japanese equivalent of TamaTown. This website had a very complete shop, with the gimmick of having some of the items be “sold out” some days.
Also, the Japanese releases tend to be cleaner in a way. There were guides explaining how to get each character and it’s easy to get the character you want every single time. All characters had a personality and an official artwork.
The Keitai series had very few characters in comparison to the V3, but their sprites were clean and the had more C-click reactions. The items you could use changed from character to character, and some items would unlock new connection games.
The Entama and Uratama have similar characters to their Connection counterparts, but in these you can always know who you are going to get from the moment you get a baby. The special families are obtained using an item you get from a Deka, and apparently also from a TV game.
The Plus series had a lot of features, but most were only accessible in Japan and / or are lost media now. But you can still get most if not all of the items via passwords and code generators.
Let’s talk about the Connections now.
The Plus had an interesting transition to the V1. First it was translated into English in an... interesting way with the European Tamagotchi Connexion, which was still mostly the same as the Plus. Then the USA Tamagotchi Connection was released, featuring the translation and the pause function that would persist on all the future releases of the series. This one altered many sprites to tone down the Japanese cultural elements present in the original Plus.
They couldn’t afford to do all the Deka stuff over here so they had to change how to get items in the V2. They made a built-in shop and added more games that could pay more if won. Since it could not connect to a phone, they did not give the V2 an antenna like the one the Keitai has. But then they did use the antenna with the V3, which now could connect to TamaTown.
And that’s it. That’s all the Keitai and the V3 have in common. The antenna. And one (1) game and some characters but the gameplay is completely different. The V2 and V3 just added stuff to the V1. More characters, more items and all adults can use all items.
But we didn’t get a guide and the characters you get are a bit randomized anyway. The Keitai series, had few carefully made characters with their own personalities and artwork. The Connections had a lot more characters but they were presented like this.
Tumblr media
This is an official chart by Bandai.
I am not joking. They only used artwork and descriptions for the characters that got one in Japan.
Also, some of the sprites made for the Connections are a bit rougher than the ones found in the Plus series.
The V4 was closer to the Entama since they took the main teens and adults and the whole skill system and career features. But you have no way of predicting what kind of adult you’ll get until you have a teen. Each toddler is more likely to become some specific teens, but there’s still randomness to it, unlike with the Entama. And the special families were replaced by a neglect family that you get if you don’t train them enough or neglect them too much. The V4 also had actual minigames for the jobs. It also retained the features found in the V3, like having an actual in-game shop instead of forcing you to use TamaTown or wait for some vendor.
So basically TLDR
The Plus series had less built-in content. Everything in them is very carefully thought and cleaner looking, but without access to many of the features lost to time some might find them lacking in content.
The Connections have way more characters and in-built games, but they are all based on the V1 and look a bit messier. Also the characters you get are a bit random so you never know who you will get.
I love them both but they are very different.

Throwback Thursday!: V5 Website
Tumblr media
With every release of a new Tamagotchi Bandai would always update tamagotchi.com with a layout to match. Above is the V5 designed tamagotchi.com landing page, where the theme was all about family. Clicking around to different pages not only brought up the requested information but plenty images of the different Tamagotchi families! This layout was on the tamagotchi.com website from 2007-2008.
