untitled quinn hughes

here is a sneak peak of my quinn hughes fic that’s been in the works literally since august. it’s at nearly 5k and it’s even close to being done so do with that what you will! 

“Did you watch the game on Thursday?” 

He was referring to his NHL debut which, admittedly, you had watched. You wanted to see what all the hype was about and, when your dad and brother had looked at you incredulously after you sat down on the sofa next to them, you told them as much. 

It was impressive, you’d give him that. 

“I sure did, Mr. Bank-It-Off-The-Net-To-Himself,” you teased. 

His face reddened at the mention of his first point in The Show, the puck from the play displayed prominently on the dresser in Chris Tanev’s guest bedroom. “Look at you, with the terminology,” he nodded his head in approval. “Finally decided to learn a thing or two, eh?” 

You scoffed and peeled off a chunk of the croissant, throwing it into your mouth. “Hardly,” you said around the pastry. “My dad and brother had it on in the living room and I just decided to see what all the fuss was about.” 

Quinn’s eyes twinkled. “Yeah? Who’s your favourite player?”

Scrunching your nose to the side, you rested your hands on your hips. “I don’t know, but people keep telling me that ‘43’ kid is kind of good.”

He laughed, and you decided you could never make a joke in front of him again because there was a real risk that his laugh might become your favourite sound in the world. 

The conversation lulled into a silence that was not awkward, but not quite comfortable either. 

“So um,” Quinn started, breaking eye contact with you and looking down at his cup, where his index finger was circling the rim. “We leave on Wednesday morning for a road trip, and then since our season is done after that, I’m going back home to Michigan.”

“Oh.” You weren’t really sure what else to say. Logically, you should have known his time spent in Vancouver this season was limited, since you heard lamenting up and down about the Canucks missing the playoffs for a fourth-straight year — of course he was leaving, who played summer hockey anyways?

“Yeah but, um, I’ll be back here in June for the draft and in September for training camp, so that’ll be fun.” Your heart certainly skipped a beat when he shifted his eyes back to yours. “Will you still be here on Mondays? When I get back?” 

You had the day of your last closing shift circled on your calendar circled and surrounded with exclamation marks, but you’d tell your manager you’d take all the Monday closings she needed if it meant Quinn would keep coming around. 

You didn’t have the courage to tell him that, though, so you just nodded. 

That answer seemed to satisfy Quinn because he looked relieved when he nodded and mumbled a “good,” into his coffee cup.
