The calloused hand now on your forehead distracted you from the nap you'd nearly fell into, now left squinting up at Kane's monotone expression.

"What are you doing?" It was a question that rolled comfortably off the tongue, having been used so often since his return from Area X, now matter how long ago it had been.

"Checking to see if you're ill." An answer that only led to more questions, another comfortable routine you both found yourselves in.

"Why would you think I'm sick?"

"You're trying to sleep midday."

Another familiar, yet sporadic, routine between you both was finding out things commonly socialized into every human under the embrace of society that were so foreign to him they lacked any sort of concept his mind could stumble upon on its own. Like the point of buying a new candle when your last one hadn't finished, re-watching the same comfort movie, finding comfort in his arms.

He never understood a lot, but learning with him was almost like falling in love again, with him and love itself.

"Kane, I was trying to nap..." The pause was always given to him, room to attempt an understanding before the explanation.

The tilt of his head showed there wasn't even a hint of understanding.

"Napping. People take small rests, usually half an hour to two hours long, usually around the afternoon. Either to re-energize or just... rest."

Another beat passed. The information being slotted somewhere, dissected and appraised.

The moment it was fully understood was made obvious when he turned away, and with a quiet gratefulness that he had no follow up questions your eyes shut once more.

Only to open once again when a sudden weight dipped the bed behind you, thick arm laying unobtrusively over your waist, a simple reminder. Warm breath fanned over your neck in a slow, even rhythm.

It was the best nap since he'd come home.

Jamie laughs quietly. “I want to kiss you so fucking bad right now, it’s not fair.”

“You can,” Roy offers, even though he knows he won’t. He heard Jamie say he couldn’t, felt Jamie tear away from that first kiss. If they had a chance, it’s long since passed. “I wouldn’t mind.”

His smile turns sad, and he runs a knuckle across Roy’s cheek before letting his hand drop. “I really do love you, Roy. I’ve wanted this to happen for so long. But I really want to go to Amsterdam. And I know that if I start something with you now, I’m not going to go.”

And Roy— Roy wants to beg him to change his mind, wants to kiss him and make him stay, wants to tell him that the thought of finding out he could have Jamie only for him to leave makes him feel like he’s dying. But he loves Jamie too much for that; he wants him to be happy too badly to be that selfish. So he just smiles his own sad smile, instead. 

“Yeah. Yeah, I understand.”

Jamie deflates into Roy’s side, slumping over as if his worry about Roy’s reaction was the only thing keeping him up. “Thank you, Roy. And I really am sorry, you know. I’m sure you had a whole idea about how this night was going to go, and—”

“It’s fine,” he cuts Jamie off. “It’s just… Right person, wrong time, yeah?”
