So the American Girl Virtual Store Museum has a room for each historical character (except Caroline, MG&Cece and the best friends.... wth) and it made me wonder what the rooms would look like for those left out.
So uh. Part Two: Contemporaries. Historicals here.
This got long so after Chrissa they’re all under the keep reading.
Lindsey Bergman: She has a very artsy room, incredibly colorful. Her scooter is in the corner, along with a plush representation of her dog, Mr Tiny. She also has a desk with her collage along with her laptop and bag. She has a few posters/CDs of 2001 bands, and a corkboard with smiley face stickers, a flyer protesting the Pet Parade, an official invite to her brother’s bar mitzvah, and pictures of her parents, brother, uncle and best friend April.
Kailey Hopkins: Beachside house, painted a very light blue, fading to reveal the light brown beneath it. She has a window pointing towards the beach, with seashells on the sill. Her snorkel set and boogie board lean against the wall, with her plush dog playing on the ground. She has her own drawings taped to the wall, including those protesting the mall development, as well as photos of her parents and best friend Tess. A wicker sidetable holds her accessories.
Marisol Luna: Her apartment room, with a window overlooking the city outside, and of course her iconic glowing stars on the ceiling. Rascal sits on the windowsill, with a long mirror in the corner, hanging beside which are her performance outfits. Her dance duffle is under the mirror, and Performance Trunk beside it. Marisol is in the middle of her room on the Spotlight Stage; aside from all this, you can see a few moving boxes in the other corners of her room. Marisol has pictures of her parents and neighbor/dance instructor.
Jess McConnell: Jess is outside, in the Belieze rainforest, sitting in her Tree Swing and writing in her journal. Beneath the tree is her motor scooter and helmet, upon which sits her monkey. Her kayak and gear are elsewhere on the path, and if you look in the trees you can spot her parrot. There is also ancient pottery, like the kind Jess finds in the book, with information on ancient Mayan society. You can also see a soccer ball and guitar, referencing some of Jess’s hobbies.
Nicki Fleming: Nicki is in the field outside her house, with Sprocket at her feet with his training accessories. Behind a fence is her horse, Jackson, and his tack box, along with several plush pigs. Nicki’s ski gear leans against the fence, along with pictures of her parents, siblings, and best friends Becca and Kris. Her sketchbook is also somewhere in the grass, with her drawing of Sprocket and the butterfly.
Mia St Clair: Mia is skating in the ice rink, wearing her accessory skates and meet outfit, with her headphones on and attached to her iPod in her hand. Against the wall is her accessory bag, purple ice skates, some ice hockey sticks, and her plush toys. On the wall are tacked some of her bedroom posters and portraits of her family, with her silver trophy on display.
Chrissa Maxwell, Gwen Thompson and Sonali Matthews: The girls are all in an open field, with a banner reading “HELLO” as they celebrate their friendship. On Chrissa’s party table are her party treats, with her craft studio beside it, and a basket holding her swim team gear. On a picnic table nearby are Gwen’s violin, Sonali’s phone, the girls’ matching headbands, along with a knitting basket and half-painted pot. Near this is Starbust the llama.
Lanie Holland: Lanie is also outside, in her beautiful garden once it blooms, trying to catch a monarch butterfly on her finger. You can see her rabbit, Lulu, on a leash, as well as some of her wildlife set animals in the bushes and trees; up in the tree is the Carolina Wren nest from her second book, and on the fence you can see an orange plush cat, representing her neighbor’s pet. Hanging from the trees is Lanie’s hammock, with a small table holding her binoculars, insect jar, plush Orangutan, and laptop. Across from Lanie is a road with her camper and gear, in which are pictures of her family.
Kanani Akina: Kanani is on the beach, standing in front of her shave ice stand. Her lounge chair is across from it, with her ‘ukelele set on top of it and her dog, Barksee, laying on the ottoman near her diary. Beside it is her paddleboard set, with her monk seal beside it. Across from them is a small signpost, holding pictures of her family, Kanani’s photography, and posters about the monk seals. Her lei hangs from the side of the sign as well, and a plush rooster is underneath.
McKenna Brooks: McKenna is in the gym, with her accessories at her feet and a balance beam behind her. Her cast and crutches lean against the wall, with her dog lying nearby and her hamster on a shelf above, along with her medal. On a sidetable are McKenna’s homework books, and pictures of her parents, sisters, and friends Toulane, Sierra and Josie.
Saige Copeland: Saige is in a field, holding a paintbrush in her hand and halfway through a drawing of Picasso, who is posing near her with the parade saddle set. At her feet is her dog, and she wears her purse, earrings, and necklace. Near them is a picnic set, behind which is her hot air balloon. Across from them are several other easels, which hold more of her paintings, portraits of her grandmother, parents and friends, and a poster for her school’s art fundraiser. A small kitten is beneath the easels, representing her grandmother’s cat, and more balloons can be seen in the sky.
Isabelle Palmer: Isabelle is in her room, with large windows overlooking DC. On a wall are large mirrors and a barre in front, with her ballet outfits hanging beside. The rest of Isabelle’s outfits are on a table near her sewing machine, with her dance case underneath it and her Studio behind it. Her kitten is at her feet as she dances in the middle of the room, while on the walls without mirrors are portraits of her family and friends, along with a poster for Anna Hart School of the Arts.
Grace Thomas: Of course, Grace is at her iconic Bakery set, ready to welcome guests. On a table to the left to the bakery is her baking set, and to the right is her pastry cart, with her travel set beside it. In the center of the room is Grace’s Bistro set, where Grace is sitting at a table, with her bulldog beside her. On the walls of the bakery are pictures of her family, including her stepcousin, Sylvie, and pictures of her friends Maddy and Ella.
Lea Clark: Lea’s rainforest house is the center of the room, with her sloth hanging out (no pun intended) in the hammock. To the left is Lea’s ocean kayak set and sea turtle, and to the right is her fruit stand and margay cat. Lea is in front of the rainforest house, sitting with her beach picnic set and grandmother’s journal; she also has her camera in hand and several of her photos scattered around her, including pictures of her parents, brother, and friend Camila. More Brazilian animals can be seen near the house and in the trees surrounding, with information on Brazilian wildlife.
Gabriela McBride: Gabriela’s Creative Studio Set provides the backdrop, as she dances in Liberty Arts. Her performance case is on a table near the Dance Barre, with her cat sitting on her chair and ottoman set. Gabriela’s loft bed is to the left, with pictures of her parents, cousin Red, and friends Teagan, Isaiah and Aaliyah. several of her poems are on the desk beneath, along with her accessories. Hung on the walls are more poems, as well as posters for her student council campaign and for Liberty Arts.
Tenney Grant and Logan Everett: Tenney and Logan are onstage, playing their guitar and drums, behind which is the dressing room, where her golden retriever is hanging out. Her and Logan have separate areas of the backstage; Tenney’s features her banjo, picnic set, and pictures of her family, while Logan’s has his own family pictures and drumsticks. Their performance outfits hang on a wall, along with Tenney’s music cartridge set.
Z Yang: Z sits at her editing desk, with some mini dolls on a shelf above her! To the right is her media kit, in front of which Popcorn is hanging out, as if she’ll be the next star of Z’s films. Z’s filming accessories are near the media kit, and to the left of Z’s desk is her scooter. Hanging on the wall, near her mini dolls, are pictures of her parents and Z.Crew, including Mariela, Lauren, Becka and Gigi. You can also see handmade posters for her stopmotions, Mariela’s band and Zeattle, with her umbrella leaning against the wall.
Luciana Vega: Luci is outside at night with her telescope, looking up at the stars, with her robot dog sitting beside her. To the right is her Mars Habitat, and to the left her Maker Station, along with her Visitor Center accessories. Luciana has a corkboard with several space facts and pictures of Mars, as well as pictures of her parents, baby sister Isadora, best friend Raelyn, and teammates- Ella and Meg Emmerick, Charlotte, Johanna, and Claire Jacobs.
Blaire Wilson: Of course, Blaire is on Pleasant View Farms, holding her party planner and tote bag, which holds her flowers and iPad. Behind her is the Family Farm Restaurant, with her Restaurant accessories and dairy-free food on a table in front, and next to her is her Party Decor. To the left is her garden, which her pig, lamb, silkie chicken and goat are playing in. Blaire’s inspiration board is hung from a tree, with pictures of her parents, brother, grandfather, and friends Theodora and Eli.
Joss Kendrick: Joss is on the beach, in front of her Volkswagen Surf Bus, near which is her Grill Set and bulldog, Murph, with life vest. Inside the bus are pictures of her parents and brothers, as well as her cheer team and best friend, Sofia. Against the Volkswagen doors is her surfboard set. To the right is Joss’s cheer stuff; on a small stage is Joss’s cheer equipment and accessories, with her uniform and bow hanging from the wall.
Kira Bailey: Kira is already given a room in the museum.

Casualty icon Tess Bateman returns as Charlie Fairhead bids farewell to BBC drama? | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV
Tess (played by Suzanne Packer) hasn’t been seen on Casualty for six years, having made her exit from the BBC medical drama in 2015 following a complicated affair with Adrian ‘Fletch’ Fletcher (Alex Walkinshaw). The beloved character was firm friends with Charlie (Derek Thompson) before her exit and her grandson was even named after the stalwart. As she makes her return this Christmas for a few…

off the rack #1186
Monday, October 23, 2017
The back door lock on my X-Trail wasn't working so I had to drop it off this morning at Japan Auto to see if they can fix it. Then it was off to Costco to stock up an a few necessities. It's so nice and warm here in Ottawa that I will be able to read Charles de Lint's new book The Wind in His Heart outside.
Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan #1 - Declan Shalvey (writer) Mike Henderson (art) Lee Loughridge (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). This 5-issue mini has the two stabby heroes with healing factors teaming up to keep a new mutant from being captured by bad guys. Sure, it's a story that's already been told many times but Declan does a good job of keeping the fun factor up so I will keep reading.
Batman: The Drowned #1 - Dan Abnett (writer) Philip Tan & Tyler Kirkman (art) Dean White & Arif Prianto (colours) Tom Napolitano (letters). There's a gender swap in this Dark Nights Metal tie-in where a woman named Bryce Wayne transforms herself into an evil version of Aquaman's wife Mera. That was unexpected. I like how this issue clarifies why the bad Batpersons are doing what they're doing. It's a basic motivation and not anything new so there's still a chance that I might stop caring about this story and stop reading.
Kid Lobotomy #1 - Peter Milligan (writer) Tess Fowler (art) Lee Loughridge (colours) Aditya Bidikar (letters). If I had looked at the credits before picking this book off the racks to read I should have expected the extreme weirdness in this comic book written by Peter Milligan. I remember his stint on Shade the Changing Man and what a psychedelic ride that was. This book is loopy too and it was the art that helped me power through to the last page. If you enjoy exploring odd mindscapes you'll like this.
Thor #700 - Jason Aaron (writer) Walt Simonson & Matthew Wilson, Russell Dauterman & Matthew Wilson, Daniel Acuna, James Harren & Dave Stewart, Becky Cloonan & Dave Stewart, Das Pastoras, Chris Burnham & Ive Svorcina, Andrew MacLean & Dave Stewart, Jill Thompson, Mike del Mundo, and Olivier Coipel & Dave Stewart (art) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). This 50-page epic features Part 1 of "The Death of Thor", but which Thor? There's a lot of them. If you've never read a Thor comic book this is a great place to start. You can tell that Jason Aaron is having so much fun writing these adventures and I am one very appreciative fan. Buy this book.
Aquaman #29 - Dan Abnett (writer) Stjepan Sejic (art & colours) Steve Wands (letters). Okay, things are starting to go the good guys' way. Evil King Rath is going to get what fer.
Maestros #1 - Steve Skroce (writer & art) Dave Stewart (colours) Fonografiks (letters). Yay, Steve Skroce is back on the racks and this time he's writing his own book. I loved "We Stand On Guard" and was hoping we'd see Steve's art again soon. This fantasy book is about a young wizard who inherits the title of big kahuna wizard after his Dad is killed. I thought that Geof Darrow did the art for this after turning the first page, but nope, it's Steve just painstakingly drawing up a storm. This new comic book gets added to my "must read" list.
Champions #13 - Mark Waid (writer) Humberto Ramos (pencils) Victor Olazaba (inks) Edgar Delgado (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). Part 2 of "Worlds Collide" has the Champions teaming up with the Avengers to stop the High Evolutionary from destroying the planet. Four groups scatter around the world to save lives but even though they keep the world's tallest buildings from disaster there's still plenty of danger ahead. The story continues in Avengers #673 which hits the racks on November 1.
Batman #33 - Tom King (writer) Joelle Jones (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). You gotta read this. Do you guys have a good chuckle when you get to the last page of a really good comic book because you feel happily amused and think, man I can't wait to read the rest of this story? I do. Few writers can make me do that and Tom King just got added to the list of writers that do. Some fans might not like what's going on with Batman's love life but I think it's great. Part 1 of "Rules of Engagement" has the Bat visiting an old flame and boy, is he going to get burned. Joelle "Lady Killer" Jones did a wonderful job showing the men folk back at the mansion and made my heart swoon with her rendition of Selina. I wish the word balloon person hadn't screwed up on the last page, otherwise this issue was a perfect read.
Sherlock Frankenstein and the Legion of Evil #1 - Jeff Lemire (writer) David Rubin (art, colours & letters). This spin-ff of Black Hammer is worth checking out if you like that mystery about a team of old super heroes. This story focuses on their super villain enemies and follows Black Hammer's daughter as she goes searching for her father. Jeff Lemire is every bit as clever as Alan Moore at creating neat super characters when Alan was doing America's Best Comics.
Ms. Marvel #23 - G. Willow Wilson (writer) Diego Olortegui (art) Ian Herring (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Remember the time when Kamala went to Karachi and had a team up with a hero there? Guess who's in Jersey City and attending her high school now? I'm glad Willow did the conversion to metric on the runaway train's speed. I didn't have a sense of what 25 miles per hour feels like. 40 kilometres per hour I get. This was a great way to have the two heroes commiserate while the train rolls along.
Wonder Woman #32 - James Robinson (writer) Sergio Davila (pencils) Scott Hanna & Mark Morales (inks) Romulo Fajardo Jr. (colours) Saida Temofonte (letters). I found the writing in this issue was as stilted as a bad soap opera script. I don't like how the relationship between Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor is portrayed. I hate that he calls her "angel". I will read the next issue to find out more about Diana's "brother" Jason and to see Emanuela Lupacchino drawing her first issue of this series.
Groo: Play of the Gods #4 - Sergio Aragones & Mark Evanier (writers) Sergio Aragones (art) John Ercek & Tom Luth (colours) Stan Sakai (letters). And so another great Groo mini ends. This time the last laugh was on the gods.
Superman #33 - Peter J. Tomasi & Patrick Gleason (writer) Doug Mahnke (pencils) Jaime Mendoza (inks) Wil Quintana (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). "Imperius Lex" starts here. With baby Darkseid missing, Apokalips needs a new ruler and it has chosen Lex Luthor. But Lex is a good guy now, right? Maybe he'll find a way to change the Parademons into minions. I like that Lois and Jon are in this story too.
Incredible Hulk #709 - Greg Pak (writer) Greg Land (pencils) Jay Leisten (inks) Frank D'Armata (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). "Return To Planet Hulk" starts here. Not to worry, they haven't resurrected Bruce Banner (yet). This time it's Amadeus "The Totally Awesome Hulk" Cho crash landing on the planet. There's no holding back when the kid unleashes the junk in the trunk as he battles a tribe of bad guys. All hail the Green Scar. This is a refreshing change of pace.
Super Sons #9 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Jorge Jimenez & Carmine Di Giandomenico (art) Alejandro Sanchez & Ivan Plascencia (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). "Planet of the Capes" ends here. I much preferred the art of Jorge Jimenez over that of Carmine Di Giandomenico. Carmine's kids don't look like kids.
Wonder Woman Conan #2 - Gail Simone (writer) Aaron Lopresti (pencils) Matt Ryan (inks) Wendy Broome (colours) Saida Temofonte (letters). There's a #MeToo moment in this issue that I found was unnecessary that made me feel disappointed because this is written by a woman. The crew threatening Diana that way wasn't needed for Conan to be any more protective than he already was. I wondered if it was put in just to titillate male readers or to point out that most men are scum. I did like how the crow girls dealt with the wine besotted pervert in the stands though.
Invincible Iron Man #593 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Stefano Caselli & Alex Maleev (art) Marte Gracia &  Alex Maleev (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). "The Search for Tony Stark" starts here. Get everything you need to know to start reading this series. It's the rebirth of one of Marvel's iconic super heroes so join us long time shellhead fans and buckle up for a wild ride.

Fomu Design, Odie Chair.  Photo – Sean Fennessy.
Cameron Foggo, Bureau Sofa
Influenced by mid-century design, this sofa plays with the juxtaposition of soft and hard elements. The severe steel rail and fine frame supports relaxed feather cushioning. The sofa is designed to fit within Cameron Foggo’s existing body of work, as a timeless piece to last a life time.
Fomu Design, Odie Chair
With the look of a handcrafted piece, this stackable chair by Fomu Design cleverly makes use of CNC technology to minimise timber wastage and maximise comfort and visual appeal. The chair plays with the expressive nature of art and the practicality of design, to create something equally functional and beautiful. The solid American oak chair is constructed from timber components of equal thickness, which limits wastage and creates a consistent and cohesive design.

Nick Rennie Studio, Wyrie Table
Responding to a brief from Artedomus, this dining table by Nick Rennie Studio is made of Elba stone and incredibly, is manufactured without any form of fixings, screws, glues or pins. The design is directly informed by a sense of responsibility to the material, which is millions of years old. The resolved design draws on the strength of the marble, using the stability of the legs to balance the top.
Daniel Poole, Freshwater Dining Table
Constructed from Rock Maple, this refined design was specifically created for an AuHaus project in Fresh Water, and uses advanced manufacturing techniques. The design required highly technical production from Daniel Poole, to maintain structural integrity for the 3.5m x 1.1m table, while maintaining a sleek profile.

Softer Studio, Clearer Coffee Table
A material exploration of timber and glass, this coffee table exemplifies Softer Studio’s edgy personality. The object is part of Softer’s recent experimentation with different materials, and the outcome is a toughened glass top and shelf, sitting on a timber base. The design pursues a sleek, mature aesthetic, but still captures the inventive character of the studio.
Pop & Scott, The Lou Alto
Paying homage to mid-century simplicity, this Pop and Scott collection aligns modern Australian lifestyle with classic form, realised in sustainable local timbers. All Pop and Scott furniture is crafted by hand in their Melbourne workshop.
Bern Chandley Furniture, CoCo Armchair
Bern Chandley Furniture presents a contemporary Australian take on the iconic Continuous Arm Windsor Chair. This piece plays with the limit of form, to create a durable and balanced functional object. The chair is produced through a mix of steambent and handshaped timber curves. The design highlights and enhances the inherent strength of natural timber.

A timeless and minimalist furniture collection from Dean Norton, where contemporary design meets traditional spinning and hand crafting techniques. The designer drew upon his 10 years as an interior designer to create a cohesive range of minimalist furniture. Incredibly, across the collection of the leaning shelf, coffee table, side table and two wall mirrors; there are no visible fixings.
Ross Thompson, Gentleman’s Wardrobe
An elegant statement piece by Ross Thompson that takes a wardrobe storage unit beyond its pure practical function, into the realm of a sophisticated design object. The hand cut dovetailed cabinet is traditionally fitted with dovetailed drawers, and counter balanced by contemporary fine tapered legs. Ross works with proportion and balance to create a statement piece that works as part of the architecture of a home.

Killing Pioneer: Trophy Hunter Kills Iconic Elephant In Namibia
YouTube (BBC) Screenshot
Voortrekker (“Pioneer”)  is arguably the world’s most photographed and famous living elephant.  Thousands of tourists would go to Namibia to see the massive elephant with its signature perfect ears and profile. One tourist however came not just to admire but to kill the famous elephant. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) agreed to allow the unnamed trophy hunter to shoot Pioneer for N$120 000. It was not hard.  Pioneer was famous in part because of his gentle and friendly demeanor.  It was like shooting a couch, but someone can now claim to have killed the most famous elephant in the world. The rest of us can look at pictures.
In order to grab the money, MET declared Pioneer a “problem elephant” despite letters from local groups that the claims of crossing into communities were false. That did not matter. Someone wanted a thrill kill and Namibian officials wanted the money.
As regulars on this blog know, I am no fan of such trophy hunts.  I often hike in remote spots to see bears and other animals in their natural habitat. We have previously followed the controversy over the shooting of “Cecil the Lion” by an American dentist Walter Palmer from Minnesota as well as  subsequent controversies of an Idaho hunter taunting animal advocates and killing giant elephants or giraffes  or rare goats or famed wolves for trophies. Recently, we discussed how the highly corrupt Zambian government to allow trophy hunters to kill thousands of hippos, including rare and threatens species for windfall payments.
I will again express my confusion on why there is such a thrill to these kills for trophy hunters. I am not sure of the trophy that is commonly obtained from a hippo. However, shooting a hippo with a high-powered rifle is about as challenging shooting cars in the airport parking lot. Yet, thrilled hunters are shown posing with the dead animals like they have achieved something truly grand in the killing such animals.
We previously wrote about the disturbing pictures of trophy hunter Tess Thompson Talley posing with her giant dead giraffe like it was some great feat to shoot a giraffe standing still eating leaves.  She told “CBS This Morning” “ I am proud of that giraffe.” She said that she had his skin made into a gun case that “everybody loves” as well as a couple decorative pillows.  She added “He was delicious. He really was. Not only was he beautiful and majestic, he was good.”
Yup, I saw a beautiful and majestic giant giraffe so I killed it and turned it into decorative pillows and a gun case.  As a lifelong outdoorsman, I cannot get my mind around that logic.

The first feminist comedy club is ready to bring the funny

The first feminist comedy club is ready to bring the funny
On Los Angeles’s Sunset Boulevard, a street bursting with comedy clubs and live acts, lies a small theater devoted to a new kind of entertainment: inclusive comedy. The Ruby is a self-described comedy theater and school “openly founded on the ideals of intersectional feminism.”

On a late Friday night in May, a showcase at The Ruby features a medley of women putting a humorous spin on difficult topics ranging from a parent’s death to childhood racism to tokenism in Hollywood. After each set, presenters are handed a bat and given free will to bash a number of archaic ’80s electronics. It’s meant to be cathartic.
Soon, it’s time for a thirtysomething Asian-American comedian to take the stage. (For privacy reasons, the theater requested that we not use the comics’ names.) “I am what you call fat,” she says, before launching into her stand-up origin story.
At an open mic night some years prior, she went on right after a male comedian whose set dripped with sexism. The man told one “joke” that went, “If a girl says no, it means yes, and if she says hell no, that means I’m gonna follow her to her car.” The audience ate it up.
Already nervous, the young woman was now alarmed. She got on stage and started her act. She poked fun at her size, insinuating that she eats too much or confuses eating a rabbit dish with consuming an entire rabbit. A few chuckles and snickers were thrown her way.
Following her set, the male comedian who made the rape joke came up to her. “You really shouldn’t do jokes about your weight,” he said. “It makes the audience uncomfortable.”
She responded the way society expects women to: with a polite nod and a meek thanks. The experience was so humiliating that she was sure she was done. Tonight, at the Ruby, she tells the audience, “That was the last stand-up comedy set I tried [for years].”

From there, she walks over to the corner of the small black stage, picks up goggles and a bat, and eviscerates a VHS tape. Beyoncé’s “I’m Feeling Myself” blares over the speakers as pieces of plastic zip across the room. The crowd erupts into cheers.
“We couldn’t have done this five years ago”
Comedian Jen Curran performed and taught sketch comedy for over 15 years, having previously served as the managing director of the Peoples Improv Theater in New York. She’s no stranger to a scene dominated by men. A recent report by Bitch Media found that female comics represented just 20% of the lineup at New York City’s iconic club Caroline’s, and only 8% of headliners were women.
Jesse Suphan, creator of Impride, a  LGBTQ Pride Comedy Festival in its second year, says openly gay, queer, and trans comics are “vastly underrepresented,” accounting for less than 10% of onstage acts.
This trend plays out on the national stage as well: Of 2017’s top 10 highest-earning stand-up comedians, only one was a woman: Amy Schumer. She is also the first female comic to make the Forbes top paid comedians list.

In April of this year, Curran, along with fellow comedians Lindsey Barrow and Randy Thompson, opened The Ruby, named after the precious stone known for its beauty, value, and strength. “It’s something that can cut you,” Curran says. The founders envisioned an Upright Citizens Brigade, but built on the ideals of intersectional feminism, which takes into consideration the multiple facets of women’s identity, including race, class, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation. Curran, Barrow, and Thompson wanted a theater and school for people who were fed up with the standard comedy model, “which tends to, perhaps just by default, cater to a straight white guy who probably has a little extra money in his pocket,” says Curran.
The founders used the tenets of The Feminist Organization’s Handbook for The Ruby’s hiring process, teaching methods, and programming. Curran says it accentuates the need to be communicative, transparent, safe, tolerant, and open-minded about all groups and genders. “Our goal is to lift up and support and carry and represent underrepresented voices in comedy,” Curran says.

More than 50% of The Ruby’s teachers are women or minorities, and in-house performers are evenly split between men and women. (When Curran performed elsewhere, she says it was closer to 20% women.) Roughly 80% of The Ruby’s visiting groups of performers are led by women, LGBTQ, or persons of color.
There’s also transparency into which board members approve house teams—crucial in a medium as subjective as comedy. “If you don’t have representation across the board at these places, you’re probably only having your staff and your leadership and the people who are the gatekeepers respond to a certain type of comedy,” says Curran. “A woman of color might have a very different sense of humor than a white guy.”
There is zero tolerance for bullying and sexual harassment at The Ruby. Anti-harassment policy guidelines hang all over the theater. Curran notes that female performers and writers are drawn to the club because they haven’t felt safe in traditional theaters where, they say, sexual assault accusations are swept under the rug.
“I would say in the last few years there’s really been a groundswell of women not willing to put up with it anymore,” Curran says. The explosion of the #MeToo movement made the need for female-centered spaces all the more urgent.
As for the comedy, The Ruby doesn’t focus exclusively on feminist or progressive topics, though it often swings that way. A show called Headscarves and Durags, for example, is described as a “one-hour comedy show featuring ‘woke’ comedians with an emphasis on legitimate diversity.” But there’s also a show about “all of the things people ignore in pop culture classics.” The only way the theater influences content is by ensuring that jokes punch up, not down.
“You want to make jokes about people who may oppress us,” Curran says. “We don’t want to make jokes about people that we are in a system to oppress.”

Curran doesn’t find all traditional stand-up clubs to be anti-feminist; in fact, she applauds recent efforts to add more female-focused showcases and inclusion initiatives. UCB hosts more than a dozen shows featuring underrepresented groups, as well as Improv Jams specifically open to women, LGBTQ, and diverse backgrounds. But prior to The Ruby’s founding, no one theater was devoted to these ideals.
“Something we kept hearing over and over from women in the comedy scene is, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we had a space, a community, an idea that we could get behind, that was for us?’” Curran says. “I think that is something we probably could not have even done five years ago. I don’t think it would have been welcome.”
Comedian Emily Heller
No boys allowed (jk)
Women in comedy have long felt the need for female-centric spaces. Last year, comedic writer Erika Abdelatif founded Late Night with Jimmy Fallopian Tubes, a late night-style show written and performed entirely by a diverse group of women at UCB in L.A. Like its namesake, the ongoing series features a monologue and pokes fun at current events from a female perspective.
Abdelatif started the mock program after realizing that late-night TV was still essentially a boys’ club. Women have made progress in late-night–with Samantha Bee and soon Busy Phillips joining the ranks–but they still make up less than 20% of writers’ rooms on these programs.
“Women needed a place that was accessible for them to go and learn, where they could grow in their practice,” Abdelatif says. “Every single month I have women come up to me and say, ‘Thank you—I never thought that I would have this opportunity.’ I can relate to that.”

Comedian Emily Heller took the idea one step further by jokingly requesting that men refrain from purchasing tickets to her taped comedy special in Seattle. Heller, who also serves as a writer on the HBO series Barry, has performed stand-up for 10 years, with appearances on Conan as well as a Comedy Central Half Hour.
“NO MEN ALLOWED!” Heller tweeted last month, adding “This policy will not be enforced, but I’d love to get as much publicity as Wonder Woman for this.” She tells Fast Company that the tweet was not meant literally, but rather as “just sort of a joke about how difficult it is to create women-only spaces when it’s technically illegal.” (Last year, comedian Iliza Shlesinger was sued for discrimination after a man was turned away from her “Girls Night In” show at the Largo in Los Angeles.)
“There are jokes in my act that women like more than men, and I want my comedy to do as well as possible when I’m recording it,” Heller says. “There’s a joke in my act about wanting to take my bra off as soon as I get home. There’s just there’s no way men are going to understand that joke the way women do.”
Heller recalls the instrumental women-only open mic nights she attended in San Francisco, whose camaraderie and communal support encouraged individuals to rally for representation. “Women have had to build these spaces for ourselves,” she says. “I think that that is true of any other group that’s seen as not the norm in stand-up comedy.”
Tokenism, bye
Supporting inclusivity is more than just hosting a one-off women’s showcase or adding a person of color to a line-up. Abdelatif says she’s witnessed numerous writers’ rooms hire one woman or person of color to satisfy management. “But is that really sufficient?” she asks.

Tess Paras is an Asian-American actress and comedian who now teaches regularly at The Ruby. She’s appeared on popular TV shows such as Grimm, Crazy-Ex Girlfriend, and Take My Wife, and she’s experienced tokenism, even now as the industry claims it wants to be more minority-friendly. “We’re in a messy place,” she says.
It’s not enough to cast underrepresented groups here and there, Paras says. They need to be in leadership roles: in the writers’ room and in the director’s chair. She points to the quote by activist and scholar Dr. Su’ad Abdul Khabeer: “You don’t give a voice to the voiceless–just pass the mic.”
“If we want better shows, better content, better stories, it’s got to come from the folks who haven’t had the opportunity to share their experiences,” Paras says.
Heller also takes issue with the overwhelming amount of press coverage female comedians receive regarding their gender status. “It seems like the only thing people want to write about us sometimes,” she says.
She wishes the focus would stick to what these comedians are doing: working on being funny. It’s what male comics get, no questions asked. “We don’t want the shit we’re up against to define what we do,” Heller says. A the same time, she says, in a follow-up email, “If the only media requests I get are to talk about this stuff, you can bet I’m gonna use it to talk about my special.”

Financial barriers and accessibility are also overlooked. Women in Comedy, a Chicago-based volunteer organization and accelerator, offers free or low-cost events and resources for women seeking paid careers in comedy. It’s a donation-based network of six chapters across the U.S. that partners with established theaters like Second City, coworking spaces, and local community shows. It currently has 1,000 registered members.
“Paying $400 to take a comedy class can be a financial barrier for a lot of women,” says Women in Comedy founder Victoria Elena Nones. “We’re breaking down those barriers so they can connect to each other without feeling like they have to pay to take a class to do that.”
Despite the growing pains in this industry, Paras is optimistic about what Hollywood might look like in the next few years. She points to a recent casting call in which the sign-in sheet asked actors to write their preferred gender pronoun. “I feel like the fact that people are being more vocal about trying is imperative and inspiring,” she says.
The Ruby, for its part, is in growth mode. The theater launched a podcast network and is contemplating opening a location in New York. At the school, most classes are full, with women making up 70% of students.
The cofounders envision spreading The Ruby format to more cities across America–not just with a physical concept, but through partnerships and collaborations. It’s about “comedy using tolerance, open-mindedness, and representations to build itself,” Curran says. “The Ruby is helping forge that trend ahead, and potentially, inspire fellow industry leaders and comedians.

“It’s encouraging women and underrepresented people to create comedy that they find funny. We want to inspire you to say, ‘I am funny, I’m enough–my voice is good enough.’”
