i went to the round1 in nebraska, so…

things i learned from round1 (in no particular order):

i am already pretty good at chrono circle, sorta good at museca, and pretty ok at chunithm

either the touch screen wasn’t registering my inputs, or i am very bad at tetote x connect

the only other round1 i went to, like, a year ago had wacca and dancerush, and i am already really good at both (but dancerush tires me the hell out)

groove coaster: im a natural, sdvx: that faucetwo paid off

chrono circle is wack, i love it

i should really get an aime card, because not only do i not have either a nesica or aime card, but my virtual suica e-amusement card just… changed card numbers for no reason??? worst part was that i paid for both e-amusement subscription and sdvx blaster pass and got to use neither

but possibly the most important?

do NOT take anything for granted. especially beatmania. i went there fully expecting to get my first good beatmania iidx experience, and not only was the regular machine not outputting video, but the lightning model was COMPLETELY TURNED OFF.

my ranking of rhythm games i played at the arcade today

(least good to best good)

tetote x connect: look man, the gimmick is cute but this game is extremely annoying to play. it's hard to tell where the next note is about to pop up and the touch screen didn't feel very responsive. also kind of a pervert game.

project diva future tone: it's good but you can literally just buy this for your pc or home console and it'll be the exact same if not better. also only lets you play one song per credit when every other game here lets you play three songs per credit. the miku tax.

chunithm paradise: good gameplay, i like the air notes gimmick but the version i was playing had a garbage lineup of songs. idk if it's because I picked a certain option but most of the list was from this weird off-brand bang dream thing. would be way higher if it had better songs.

chrono circle: FASCINATING. feels like if you got a mad scientist to design a rhythm game. i can't describe this, it must be seen to be believed. has kpop if you're into that.

beatmania: The Classic. not super engaging visually, but the keys + record make it fun to play. the best part is the vibrating platform you stand on. every rhythm game should have that. has RED ZONE.

wacca: just really really solid all around. good song line up, fun to play, great visuals. i heard that they ended support for this game and while the machines will still be playable they won't be updated any more which is a damn shame. has The 90s Decision.

Taito is releasing a new rhythm game this winter: Tetote Connect This is a new type of rhythm game where you can dance with your partner in life! There are eight characters, each with a different personality. You will hear their reactions and voices, and they will be voiced in famous actors. You can build a stronger bond with your partner by playing more. disclaimer: im not a huge rhythm game fanatic, i dont play any of the little gacha apps or online games. i just play them in arcades and i am not good at them.

WACCA Reverse

tragically offline now, wacca is as easy to pick up as people say it is. different movements are obvious so there is not a complex symbol language to learn, and theres no buttons. menus use lots of english loan words in katakana which make it easier to use than other untranslated games, but is a barrier to entry versus translated games. songs are very limited now that its offline, but i still enjoyed it.

CRONO CIRCLE

gimmick haters begone. yes you have to manage the touch screen and buttons and the spinning ring. maybe it becomes too much at higher difficulties but for a medium player like myself the diversity of inputs is fun. the spinning is so good. the touch screen is definitely the weakest aspect of the game though and im really just here for the spinning. it has some k-pop included in the song list as well as the typical.

TETOTE X CONNECT

i did make fun of this before playing it but its so cute and fun. the first time it was offline and was cute but not something i would play again, but online! bops in the songs available and actual ability to save progress. the fact that you and the character are supposed to press the screen at the same time and its mapped to the choreography is also really helpful to predict what it wants you to do. is it just big ipad rhythm game? yes. but is that not enough? dorothy is my friend :)

GROOVE COASTER

best song list out of any of the games at the arcade, and though there are home versions i think they joystick is a lot of the fun. that being said, im not sure how youre supposed to hold it? i always end up with my hand hurting after three songs. i also cannot remember what the different inputs are supposed to be for the life of me. more fun to watch than to play for me.

PROJECT DIVA

i dont think the arcade cabinet is giving us anything the console versions arent already. i was really excited for it last year but its priced the same as the other games despite having such simple controls and being untranslated. just play it at home.

#i also played sound voltex but the japanese was even harder for me to understand than project diva and the controls were a little off so i #cant really judge the gameplay. the sexualization is too far for me to actually want to play tho.... #in conclusion i wish there was a round1 or another import arcade closer to me than fucking atlanta
