The Everly Brothers - June is as Cold as December (1966)
With jangly guitars, the Everlys attempt to keep up with changing times. Works for me, and their harmonies are still perfection.
But June doesn’t have a heart to offer anymore

Hey, anybody remember Love Hurts, by 70s metal band Nazareth?
I only recently learned that it's a cover. Of a 1960 Everly Brothers song.
My life is a lie.

Year-End Poll #11: 1960
Tumblr media
More information about this blog here
To quote a song from a certain John Waters adaptation, "Welcome to the 60's." And to mark the occasion, here's some songs from that decade of sex, drugs, and rock and roll! Woo!
So our modern perceptions of any given decade are rarely exhibited by the Billboard Hot 100 charts, especially when the decade is only just starting. I have my own thoughts on when the 60's truly comes into its own, but we'll get to that later. In the meantime, the top hits of 1960 wouldn't seem that out of place in the 1950s. Compositions, traditional pop, and doo-wop. Elvis is back on the charts after his time in the military.
However, there is one song featured in this poll that was truly a sign of where pop music was heading. If anyone can't figure out which one it is, don't worry. The same song will return in a future 1960s poll.

Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives Get Behind NPR’s Tiny Desk and Make Big Impression
Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives are one hell of a gospel group.
The quartet made the point in closing its NPR “Tiny Desk Concert” with “Heaven,” a true gospel-’grass number that toggles between a cappella vocalizations and acoustic instrumentation and proves the group equally adept on the mic and stringed things.
Stuart, on mandolin and guitar, Kenny Vaughan (guitar), Chris Scruggs (bass) and drummer Harry Stinson also made the point that cliched lyrics and straight Johnny Cash ripoffs - Stuart owned it by singing a bar of “Big River” before “Tomahawk” - can work in the hands of the right musicians.
“What a great way to spend an afternoon,” Stuart said at one point. The audience members obviously agreed.
For the in-studio crowd was even louder than the band, whoopin’ and a-hollerin’ as the FabSupes performed “Streamline” - with Stinson on brushed snare as his bandmates offered fiery acoustic guitar, mandolin and double bass solos - after warming up with the set-opening, Everly-esque rockabilly of “Tempted.”

Axl: I was sitting in my litigation with my ex-wife, and it was the day after the bombing. We had a break, and I'm sitting with my attorneys with a sort of smile on my face, more like a nervous thing - it was like, 'Forgive me, people, I'm having trouble taking this seriously.' It's just ironic that we're sitting there and this person is spewing all kinds of things and 168 people just got killed. And this person I'm sitting there with, she don't care. Obliterating me is their goal.
[ Axl Speaks, Rolling Stone, January 2000 ]
"Another unreleased song, was inspired by a court date, called “Oklahoma” – heard only as an instrumental dating back to 2000. 'Oklahoma' later became Berlin and subject to change. "

WIP WEDNESDAY (plus a fic rec!!)
(the way I just spent so much time beating myself into posting and then almost said "who cares" and deleted it. literally screaming at my own brain.)
Oh boy, well as usual, I was not prepared but feel inspired by you all. I've missed a ton of tags lately for lots of wonderful shares and tag games, and I'm so sorry.
After @cutestkilla and I gifted our song to Pati last week (linked at the bottom if you haven't heard it yet!) I started working on another song.
This is a cover of an old favorite, All I Have to do is Dream by The Everly Brothers. I wanted the song on the playlist for my WIP fic, currently known as sad!Baz, but couldn't find a version that felt as helpless, depressing and full of agonizing longing as I needed. 🫠 So...just trying to do it myself.
How do you transform a song, made to showcase gorgeous harmonies, into its most depressing version?? How about slow it down, strip it back and take away the harmonies so it's obvious just how alone you are in this deep pit of despair and longing. (sorry Baz, "it helps to hurt the most")
This is very rough, just literally kinda free styling vocals, (and not hitting notes, messing up Uke fingerings) and seeing what works.
Also I can NOT stop thinking about a particular scene in What's Left, by @cutestkilla while working on this song. (If you've read the fic you know. The hotel bed, waking from dreams. 😭❤️) And right away I was like, screw my playlist this should be a gift for Dre...but Dre is also the person I've been sending messages to non-stop about how to make this song work 🤣 so...not much of a surprise there. Dre, I'm publicly declaring this song will be dedicated to you and that scene. ❤️
INCREDIBLE FIC REC If you haven't read What's Left. Please don't let the tags scare you away. This fic has changed me as a person. It is beautiful!! Do not miss out!
Gift Song by @cutestkilla and me, for @aristocratic-otter.
Thanks for tags lately and new tags: @fatalfangirl @you-remind-me-of-the-babe @whatevertheweather @cutestkilla @bookish-bogwitch @skeedelvee @whogaveyoupermission @artsyunderstudy @chen-chen-chen-again-chen @shrekgogurt @yellobb @palimpsessed @aristocratic-otter @martsonmars @johnwgrey @ic3-que3n @ileadacharmedlife @forabeatofadrum @facewithoutheart @jbrrring @raenestee @basiltonbutliketheherb @aroace-genderfluid-sheep @confused-bi-queer and probably so many more. I'm not good at juggling things lately.
