Inflation

Can we apply a little common sense here? If the Fed is going to raise interest rates to “combat inflation,” it makes common sense to ask how raising the cost of every bank loan, every credit card, every mortgage, every business bond, and, of course, every salary to compensate for that raise in the cost of money is going to lower the rate of inflation? The Feds argument is that they have to fight fire with fire… just be careful how much gasoline the feds pour onto a blaze they got started in the first place.

It's like the forest fires out across the country. Most are caused by “controlled burns” to reduce flammable material littering the forests. If you don’t handle that just right it explodes into hundreds of thousands of forest fires. And yet, no one actually asks: Why the heck are you starting a fire in the dry season? Ah, but those Feds always know best.

Back to inflation: Exactly how is raising the cost of everything going to help normal people make ends meet? It’s not, is the obvious answer.

Look, there are only two ways the National Debt can be repaid. In Switzerland they once chose to raise taxes for two years, punishing as that may be, and they paid off their national debt as a matter of national security. In the USA, four times in my lifetime, our government has used “inflation” as an excuse to raise interest rates, causing prices to rise everywhere – houses, rents, food, salaries. Once the feds put “inflation” rising interest rates in place, you can start counting 2 to 4 years before a new level of much higher prices stabilizes.

Nixon took us off the gold standard so he could play with interest rates. Reagan allowed the mom-and-pop savings banks to become real estate and business traders and loaners, flooding money into the market at high risk, banks failed. Bush/Cheney lied about the National Debt and, in 2008, inflation struck again. Trump over spent, locked down and taxed imports, and reduced the immigrant workforce.

Nixon left in ’73, within 4 years inflation had doubled. Reagan left in ’88, prices doubled before Bush Sr. left office. Bush/Cheney left in 2008, the banks failed. Trump left in 2020. Here we are, almost 2 years later and inflation has struck—hard—again.

So what happens when inflation goes rampant? To finance DC spending, the US government sells bonds, Treasury Notes, which have a fixed value, non-index (inflation) linked. $100 US Treasury notes fall in real value when inflation hits. That value is crippled by inflation. A Ford station wagon in 1978 cost around $4,500. That size of car today costs $25,000. A house that sold in Amenia, NY for $65,000 in 1982 resold in 1989 for $330,000. The car your family needed in 2007 cost $8,500. It now cost $25,000. Even allowing for today’s car being 30% better made and longer lasting, that’s still a heck of a jump for a lump of metal. A house in Phoenix that sold in 2016 for $275,000 sold last week for $1,100,00 without any improvement.

So, did you cause this inflation? Nope. Can you control this inflation? Nope. How can you cope with this inflation? Well, the quicker you ask for a raise, the sooner you can protect your family. But here’s the downside… and why the Fed is acting slowly. If inflation becomes rampant, you will end up buying a loaf of bread with cash carried in a wheelbarrow.

So, what is America to do? So far, the Feds inflate interest rates to slow consumer buying, all with the hidden aim to reduce the value of those Treasury bonds. It has worked three times after Nixon took us off the gold standard. Will it work a fourth time? The pain will be measurable for every working American, every retiree, every military family and especially for people who save in banks at ridiculously low interest rates. That’s guaranteed. That buck you saved? Within a year it’ll be worth 60 cents. As long as we spend and tax without constraint, the government only has one way to protect the really wealthy and the power the US dollar wields worldwide. In the end, the middle class will be gone forever, the poor will become poorer and the very ethic of work in America will be valueless. It’s a downward spiral we’re caught in once again.

This is a masterpost for my ocs Mara and Rosemary for @smallartistocbracket, and also may contain other information about them and my other ocs outside of the competition. 

My first oc, Mara, is a teenage girl who with her friend Vivi and sibling Spencer, wander into the forests of amenia (the setting of the story, to be exact) one summer(Vivi is actually the protagonist, but this aint about her right now). Mara may come off as cold and aggressive, but she's actually fun and rebellious, with a soft side. Their actual name is Margot, just everyone calls her Mara instead.

My second oc is Rosemary, and she's a wood nymph who lives in one of the villages in the forests! She's the first forest being the group encountered, and she takes them back to the village. Rosemary is the same age as the trio and she's sweet and fun and loves flowers and exploring (she has a journal full of collected information on plants, mushrooms and flowers). When Mara and Rosemary meet, Rosemary instantly has a crush. But as they both hang out with each other, Mara is charmed by Rosemary's brightness and develops a crush on her as well.

Oo, your ocs look really cool! Is there a specific story line to them at all?

:D I’m so happy you asked, thank you so much!!!

So I have two oc stories, The forests of amenia(fantasy rpg inspired story) and Astrolina(space story)

For forests of amenia:

The story follows a girl named Vivi Hayashi(she/her, post canon is she/they) whose mother sends her to a town near these strange forests in a small town in west coast U.S. for the summer. She’s a bit of a silent protagonist lol. Two other kids come along with her on this vacation, Spencer Rodriguez(they/he) and Mara Rodriguez(she/they) due to their mothers deciding they should spend the summer together due to their children’s lack of friends. They don’t exactly know each other besides seeing each other around at school, and Mara doesn’t exactly trust Vivi at first, whereas Spencer is warm and friendly when meeting Vivi. Mara doesn’t exactly like the idea of this planned vacation and somehow drags Vivi and Spencer into the mysterious forests but then get lost deep into them and discover that the forests are magical(there’s more lore about the forests magic layer but I’m to lazy to discuss it right now). They meet Rosemary(she/her), a teen wood nymph who takes them to her local village where they later learn that the forest is dying and only they can save it.

For Astrolina:

Our protagonist is a teen named Cass(they/them) who’s been running on their own across the galaxy since they were five. Their mother gave them an amulet before never seeing her again, and it’s their life mission to find out what the amulet means. When Cass is 14, they accidentally stumble across legendary space pirate, Captain Leo Clicks(he/him) who then sort of in a way adopts them. Cass starts to travel with Clicks and his crew, and then eventually seeks out to find Leo’s ex, Forest Glenn(he/him) who’s been working on a long time project that would possibly lead to Cass finding answers on their amulet.

Well that’s a basic summary of each story, there’s more lore posts to come explaining the story in greater detail to come!

As mentioned before in my master post for my ocs Mara and Rosemary, Vivi Hayashi is the protagonist of my oc story. She has the nickname ‘bright eyes’ because the story is sort of like an rpg(I’m actually planning to make it one once I have better coding skills and get all the details straight!) and Vivi, being the protagonist is the only one who can see the little shadow boy(I’ll make a post about him later) where she can save. A legend in the story states ,’Only the child with the bright eyes can see the boy in the shadows’ so the shadow boy calls her bright eyes. Vivi’s a bit of a silent protagonist and selectivley mute, however, in the middle of the story, she starts to talk to and acknowledge the player.
