I've been talking with a few people irl about the TikTok ban and I was wondering if I could get your take on it? (iirc you work in election security). Mainly I'd like to know why TikTok/China is *uniquely* bad wrt dating mining/potential election interference when we've seen other companies/governments do the same thing (thinking of the Russian psyops here on Tumblr in 2016). It feels like the scope is so narrow that it doesn't come close to targeting the root problem (user privacy and data mining as a whole), leading me to think it's only point is "ooh China Scary". Thoughts? (No worries if you'd rather not get into it, I just thought of you as someone who might have more insight/informed opinions on the matter).
So I'm not really familiar with all the details of the case and certainly not all the details of the bill. But I will give my perspective:
TikTok as a particular threat to users' data and privacy has been known for some time in the cybersecurity world. US government employees and contractors have been straight-up forbidden to have it on their phones for some time now. I, for example, have never had it on my phone because of these security concerns. (Worth noting, I'm not a government employee or contractor, it was just a known-to-be dangerous app in the cybersecurity world so I avoided it.)
This is because the parent company, as I understand, has known connections to the Chinese government that have been exploited in the past. For example, to target journalists.
Worth noting, another app that would potentially be on the chopping block is WeChat, which also has close ties to (or is outright owned by?) the Chinese government. This is just speculation on my part but it's based on the fact that all the concerns around TikTok are there for WeChat too and it has also been banned on government devices in some states, so I imagine it would be next if the bill passes.
I think this is important to note because I've seen some hot takes here on Tumblr have said that the entire case against TikTok is made up and there is no security threat. That is simply not true. The concerns have been there for a while.
However, the question of what to do about it is a thorny one.
The determination seems to be that so long as TikTok is still owned by its parent company with its direct ties to the Chinese government, there really is no way to guarantee that it's safe to use. From that angle, demanding that the company sever ties and set up some form of local ownership makes sense.
I am not a lawyer, but, that being said, forcing them to sell their local operations to a locally-based buyer is a pretty invasive and unusual step for legislators to take against a private company, even in a clear case of spying. I'm sure TikTok's widespread popularity is a big part of the threat it poses, which lends to the argument used to justify such an extreme step. (Because it is on so many phones, it really could be a danger to national security.)
That said, at one point young activists on TikTok embarrassed Trump (lots of good context in this article) while he was campaigning in 2020, and there was some talk then about shutting it down which seemed pretty clearly linked to how it was used as a platform to organize against him. I'm sure there's at least some right wing antipathy towards the app that has a political basis going back to this event. Trump signed an executive order banning it, the ban going into effect got bogged down in the courts, and then Biden rescinded that executive order when he got into office, pending an investigation into the threat it posed.
Those investigations seem to have further confirmed that the Chinese government is getting access to US user data through the app, and further confirmed it as a security threat.
Now, to muddy the waters further, there's several dodgy investment funds including one owned by former Secretary of the Treasury to Trump Steven Mnuchin that are circling with an interest to buy TikTok if it does sell. That's very concerning.
Funds like Mnuchin's interest in purchasing TikTok (even though they do invest in other technologies too, so it is in their portfolio) definitely makes the motivations behind the sale look pretty damning as momentum builds, that it could be some sort of money grab here in the US.
China has also pointed out that forcing the sale of a company because of spying concerns like this opens a whole can of worms. If China thinks that, say, Microsoft is spying on their citizens, could they force the US company to sell its operations in China to a Chinese investor? Could they force Google? Could they even further polarize the internet in general between "free" and "not free" (as in, behind the great Chinese or Russian firewall, as examples) if this precedent is set, so that no Western companies can operate in authoritarian states without selling their local operations there to a government-controlled organization, and thus be unable protect their users there? Or, if you don't have so rosy a view of Western companies, could it effectively deal a blow to international trade in general by saying you have to have to sell any overseas arms of a company to someone who is from there? Again, I'm not a lawyer, but this is a hell of a can of worms to open.
But again, this is muddy because China absolutely is spying on TikTok users. The security reason for all of this is real. What to do about it is the really muddled part that has a ton of consequences, and from that angle I agree with people who are against this bill. Tons of bad faith consequences could come out of it. But the concerns kicking off the bill are real.

Honestly, I'm surprised it took this long for the TikTok Tunnel Lady Saga to really pop off. She's been digging the damn thing for, like, a year. It has flooded, what, twice? It was fucking on fire at one point!

A quick sketch because I'm at work. But this whole situation was messed up. He really didn't deserve that kind of treatment.
Those that did this to him, I hope they realize now their mistakes.
I honestly can't believe that they didn't come to their senses. Since we were young, we've been taught about the dangers of cyber bullying and how to be responsible on the internet.
I'll be lighting my candles for him.
Rest well, Inquisitor. Rest well, Vincent.
We miss you dearly.

So APPARENTLY on TikTok mascara or make up refers to sex/penis now??
Tumblr media
Someone was giving another person hell on Tt and twit because they... Didn't know??
This is me finding out that mascara on TikTok is now sexual assault or dick. Or whatever... Y'all using code words because the apps censor is too wild is just as bad as the mom who taught her daughter to call her privates parts her "cookie" so it took the teacher talking to the mom about sharing her snacks to realize she was being abused.
NORMAL PEOPLE DONT KNOW WHAT THE FUCK MASCARA MEANS IN REGARDS TO SA
Stop attacking people for not understanding your convoluted slang that only exists on your app as a code word. On an app with an entire MAKE UP ART demographic

Today I'm mad about Elyse Myers getting bullied off tiktok because she dared not to say anything about Gaza, and like SURE yes it's nice and good to know your fave celebrities position on things so you can feel good about supporting them but when thousands of people are asking one content creator to talk about something, to the point that content creator feels the need to leave the entire platform, you have to ask HMM maybe there's a better use for that energy? Like imagine if all those people harassed Biden that same way? Or organised protests and grassroots activitism? The world would fucking crumble if the tiktok mobs put their collective energy into that, but nooo, gotta nerf them by making them only put their energy into bullying random celebs.
I wonder what they think would happen if EM *did* turn around tomorrow and say "Free Palestine" or whatever? Nothing would change, but now you'd know your favourite celebrities POV on the situation. Cool. Then what? What's the next step after she says that?
I don't have a problem with genuine people who are what people dub "armchair activists" because plenty of people are only capable of what they're capable of. But if what you count as "activism" is just "I'm gonna yell at someone until they say the keywords I'm looking for and then I'll leave them alone", maybe go figure out actual activism and then come back.

Lauren the Mortician is a TikTok content creator who has proved herself to be rather unreasonable following some self-inflicted controversies. What started as fighting with actual experts on Tiktok over her spreading harmful misinformation has now morphed into Lauren skirting around the law, with the help of her attorney, in order to threaten and silence her critics.

Imagine being so immature that you dox and harass a 13 y/o fan under the ASSUMPTION they traced your "artwork" (same-face syndrome is a killer when you make tutorials for a living).
Puririka is a fucking moron and anyone who supports her can kindly unfollow me <3

Rest In Paradise. Rest In Power. ❤️
I’m not part of the COD cosplayer community on TikTok, but I gathered what I could and am going to speak on this because it’s tearing me apart. As a family member of someone who killed themselves this whole thing makes me so fucking angry and upset. And it’s painful to sit here and watch all this happen and see that nobody is being held accountable for it.
This is all the information that I have, there may be some content creators out there that could probably help you understand it better than me but here’s what I know..
Inquisitor was a really genuine guy who had a positive message and told a lot of people that he loved them. Just spreading positivity and good energy through his content and alike. I didn’t follow him and wasn’t part of his fan base but his videos did appear on my FYP consistently. And from what I could tell in his videos that’s not far off, he really did seem like a good guy, really sweet and kind and spreading positivity and love through content he created on his platform.
AJ is a girl who edited videos for him. They had DM’s back and forth on what I believe was Discord, he didn’t realize she was a minor because she had lied to him about being a minor. After he received an edited video from her that he liked he told her; ‘I love you’ and for someone who is just genuinely a positive person that is a normal thing to say to someone who does something nice for you or says something nice to you.
After he got another video from her that he really enjoyed he said ‘Imma marry you’ which admittedly may have not been professional or appropriate but also that is not fucking grooming. Again, he didn’t know that she was underage.
AJ then went to her boyfriend Tito whom encouraged her to keep messaging him under the guise of being an adult. Which she did. Messaged Inquisitor again saying she wanted to talk to him, “be friends”, which he repeatedly denied and shut down. She even lied to him and told him she was not a minor. Something she did because she saw the “MDNI” (minors do not interact) right there in his fucking bio!
She continued to try to bait him into talking to her and he continued to deny her, even going as far as telling her to leave him alone. Of course, this would’ve been incriminating on her as opposed to Inquisitor so she never released any of those screenshots. Only the ones that made it seem like he was grooming her.
As a result, people went after him. Bullying and harassing him on all of his socials, calling him a pedophile and a groomer. She knew that he was not a groomer and she knew that he was not trying to groom her. She was hung up that he didn’t want to do business with her anymore and decided to take a route that would get him canceled. She lied and her and her boyfriend premeditated these allegations to plot against Inquisitor to ruin his reputation, his career and his life.
AJ bullied and harassed him into suicide— which is a crime by the way! And both her and Tito should absolutely be charged for the life they ruined.
They took the bulk of this tragedy but content creator; Keegan’s Mask is at fault too. Not as much as AJ and Tito, she is still at fault for taking AJ’s words as scripture and just running with it. No questions asked, no research of her own, and no follow-up on if what she was saying was true.
Bravo 0-7 was also involved in some way. I’m not sure how or what they did but people know they’re not a good person. Users on TikTok that are or were part of their Discord server have come forward and stated that both Bravo 0-7 and AJ have caused problems before. Bravo 0-7 is apparently known for being rude to strangers or random people in the server. And AJ liked drama, she liked to be part of it and she liked to start it.
They all are responsible, AJ and Tito mostly but Keegan’s Mask has a part on this and I refuse to let that go. What’s more is Tito is refusing to take responsibility for what he has done, saying he had nothing to do with it when he was absolutely the main part of the problem. His behavior is unbelievable and quite frankly— absolutely fucking disgusting and pathetic.
I don’t care what anyone else says, and I especially don’t care what the people defending these two have to say. They absolutely set Inquisitor up, there is no doubt about that. To cancel him. For clout, jealousy or because AJ really wanted to be that petty just because Inquisitor didn’t wish to speak with her I’m unsure, but Tito told AJ to continue messaging him posing as an adult knowing full well she is in fact a minor. “To get more proof to keep my audience entertained.” Is word for word the message that Tito sent during a conversation about the issue.
The “apologies” they issued on their platforms after were pathetic, poorly strung together and if I may be frank— made me fucking livid. I do not wish for their deaths in the slightest as that would not make me any better than them. But I sincerely hope they never find peace over this, they deserve to remember how they drove an innocent man to kill himself, they deserve that constant reminder how their deranged actions had a very real consequence.
We need to do better, not only as a fandom community but as a society as a whole. Dogpiling and witch hunting with no real evidence or proof of allegations has cost a young man his life. He was only 23 years old.
Everything regarding the matter is devastating and everyone involved should 100% be fucking ashamed of themselves.
That being said once again I do not wish to fall to their level and I do not wish that for any of you either. I do not condone sending AJ, Tito, Bravo 0-7 or Keegan’s Mask death threats of any kind, or doxxing them.. if you do that then you are no better than them. Be better than them.
Rest In Paradise. Rest In Power. ❤️
I hope you found the peace you were looking for Vincent.
My condolences and prayers go out to his family and friends that were affected by this tragedy.
You can sign the petition to get him added as a skin in COD here:

So White cosplayers on TikTok are cosplaing Velvette as Gray skinned then people are calling it black face. I don't think it's black face, white washing sure but it's not really my place to speak but what I CAN do, is this!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her skin colour is definitely brown, inconsistently brown but still brown. The only time she is gray is on a TV screen and I understand that it's her first appearance but like bro! Your job as an artist is to look at more than one picture to use as reference and also not one in REALLY bad lighting. I could understand drawing her as pink because of the 7th picture because if you just look at it alone, it does look normal but LIGHT gray?? These cosplayers are doing homestuck gray as if she's Emily and it is SO strange because if she was gray, like I genuinely thought picture 10 was before color picking, it'd be a dark gray not THAT!!

WTF Did I Just Watch: The "Who TF Did I Marry" Saga
I'm sure you all have heard by now about the "Who TF Did I Marry" TikTok saga. I finally caved and binge-watched the whole thing, and honestly... I'm speechless. Like, what did I just witness?!
This girl, Reesa, spills ALL the tea about her marriage to this guy she calls "Legion." Turns out he was basically a professional liar. We're talking fake jobs, fake past, the whole nine yards. It's like something out of a Lifetime movie, but way messier.
Now, I get that sometimes you need to vent, and sharing your experiences can be healing. But putting this much intensely personal stuff out there for the internet to devour? That's a bold move. Especially when you know there will be a whole chorus of opinions (and not all of them kind).
Don't get me wrong, the story is absolutely riveting. But it's also got me wondering where we draw the line between sharing and oversharing. Am I the only one who thinks this is a little TMI?
