okay, i'm watching the patreon preview of the first half of hbomberguy's new video on plagiarism. And right after the cold open, he sets that top book down on this stack. And like...I just can't help noticing those bottom two books.

Sources for Somerton's Plagiarism from Hbomberguy's Video (as much as I could get)
I went back through Harry's video, focused entirely on the sources James Somerton pulled from in the hopes of creating as much of a comprehensive list as I could--though my Google-Fu is not very strong. I did however find something I thought was forever lost and that made me very happy--specifically the magazine Midlands Zone containing the column by Steven Spinks that Harry poignantly used as an illustration of gay erasure... while Somerton uses it to sound like HE is waxing remorseful about the very subject.
This is not a complete list, I'm sure. For one thing, I was only able to attempt to pull sources that Harry himself mentioned in the video. Surely there's so very much more out there. I expect there to be a great deal more internet archeology to unearth just how much writing and culture Somerton has stolen like he's the British Museum of Natural History but for gay people.

Harry's list of mentioned youtubers:
Alexander Avila - https://www.youtube.com/@alexander_avila Matt Baume - https://www.youtube.com/@MattBaume Khadija Mbowe - https://www.youtube.com/@KhadijaMbowe Lady Emily - https://www.youtube.com/@LadyEmilyPresents Shanspeare - https://www.youtube.com/@Shanspeare RickiHirsch - https://www.youtube.com/@RickiHirsch VerilyBitchie - https://www.youtube.com/@verilybitchie
Harry created a convenient playlist of videos by these and other people he wants to bring to everyone's attention.
Please give them your support.

Midlands Zone Magazine - Column by Steven Spinks
After a great deal of searching, I found an archive of the "Midlands Zone" magazine, where you can read through past issues dating all the way back to February 2014. I have also found the issue from which Somerton took Spinks' poignant discussion of gay erasure: Overall archive Specific Issue - Pages 16-17
It will not allow you to download it, but you can read it exactly as it appeared in print form.

First off only focusing on Somerton's work.
Secondly not including anything that might be visible enough to not require amplifying their voice (I cannot speak for all of those I have found links to, but journalism is frequently a thankless job).
Thirdly any source that is of a nature that is antithetical to the very existence of the queer community, such as the right-leaning source that didn't make it into Somerton's video, but Harry was able to identify as a source he had considered using.

Mickey Mouse is Gay
I'm working on research notes for my Hays Code video essay, and I'm reading The Celluloid Closet by Vito Russo. While reading, I came across this image:
Tumblr media
[Image description: A screenshot from the ebook of The Celluloid Closet. It shows an old poster of Mickey Mouse playing a harp, with text that reads "always gay!" in large capital letters. Smaller text at the bottom reads "(C) Walt Disney Enterprises." The image is captioned with, "When the word gay meant happy and nothing else." End description.]
There was no immediate information about when or in what context this poster was produced, but since I live in Florida, where Disney was involved in the recent "Don't Say Gay" chaos, I felt compelled to go dig up more info.
That digging led me to a copy of Tinker Belles and Evil Queens, by Sean Griffin, which opens chapter 2 ("Mickey Mouse--Always Gay!") with the following:
In the midst of The Celluloid Closet, Vito Russo’s groundbreaking work on representations of homosexuals in American film, there appears a poster advertising Mickey Mouse cartoons. As a joyous Mickey plucks out a tune on a harp, the poster proclaims, “Always Gay!” Underneath this picture, Russo writes the caption “When the word ‘gay’ meant happy and nothing else.” Although Russo separates Mickey’s personality from the modern connotations of the word “gay,” linking the word “gay” with “homosexual” had begun in various homosexual communities during the 1930s. The word “gay” was used in these circles as a method of code to let others know that someone was “a member of the community” without declaring it to those who would physically or legally threaten them. Furthermore, although Walt and most (if not all) of his employees probably would not have known this new meaning to the word when they created the aforementioned poster in the 1930s, it seems that certain audience members were watching and enjoying Mickey’s “gaiety” in all its connotations.
This dynamic becomes more apparent when certain historical evidence suggests that the phrase “Mickey Mouse” itself was bandied about by some homosexuals as a code phrase. Gay and lesbian historian Allan Berube found a photograph of a gay bar in Berlin during the 1930s called “Mickey Mouse.” A lesbian hobo of the 1930s who went by the name Box-Car Bertha related to Dr. Ben L. Reitman in 1937 that a group of wealthy Chicago lesbians threw soirees called “Mickey Mouse’s party.” Bertha maintained contact with these women in order to borrow money, introducing herself by saying “I met you at Mickey Mouse’s party.”
With this evidence of the use of “Mickey Mouse” as a code phrase for homosexuality, seemingly benign uses of the name by homosexual figure take on heightened meaning. When openly gay songwriter Cole Porter wrote the lyrics for “You’re the Top” in the early 1930s, he included the line “You’re Mickey Mouse.” In The Gay Divorcee (1934), Betty Grable approaches Edward Everett Horton, who made a career out of playing the bumbling sissy in Hollywood films during the ’30s, and sings to him “You make me feel so Mickey Mousey.” Although what Grable’s character means by this is left open to interpretation, in context she seems to mean that Horton stirs some emotion within her. Yet, “Mickey Mousey” might have had a sly double meaning—especially when a flustered Horton responds to Grable’s assertion, “Well, no wonder!”
I've said before that completely writing off Disney media is a bad take, because Disney media has been very important in queer history. The corporation is evil, but the art has the talent and soul of countless skilled artists, many of whom are/were queer. Painting Disney media as across-the-board soulless and terrible erases the contributions of countless artists who were themselves exploited by the company.
There is such a long tradition of queer people slipping queerness under Disney's radar and into their classic films. I typically use Howard Ashman's work on The Little Mermaid as my go-to example of this, because The Little Mermaid is a very queer movie based on a very queer story by a very queer author.
So it's pretty wild to learn Mickey Mouse himself has been used as queer flagging!
For more info about Disney Queerness, I recommend the video essay "What Makes Disney Villains So Gay?" by Matt Baume, as well as the YouTube channel Dreamsounds.
(Also, if you want to support the production of my video essay about the Hays Code, you can pledge to my Patreon. I still have some texts to track down for research and might have to shell out to buy them.)

All right...for those of you who don't know my thoughts about Wish, yes, I wasn't happy with the finished result, but no, I'm not a hater. I'm mostly just disappointed that this project that had so many good ideas came out so half-baked, and THIS is a perfect example of what I mean.
No, it's not because "Star Boy" appears in it -- at least, not by itself. I do actually like Star's "himbo" personality in this, even if I also completely understand liking the idea of a mute version of the character. (The downside is that the mute Star from the finished film honestly doesn't have much personality outside of just being cute, in contrast to other mute magical Disney characters like Tinker Bell.)
No, the lost potential here is two-fold --
Firstly, I once again felt more emotion watching this storyboarded sequence than I did at any point in the finished film. I smiled hearing the fun banter between Star and Asha, insinuating that they're becoming closer despite their contrasting personalities; I felt some suspense in how Star and Asha were going to get away from evil!Queen Amaya; I even laughed pretty hard at the cat-and-yarn gag! I didn't laugh once while watching the finished movie.
Secondly -- and this point is actually the one I want to focus on more -- is the commentary given about why this scene was cut. I truly think another unspoken reason behind the decision was that this sequence was clearly inspired by the transforming chase scene in Nimona, which Disney of course infamously dropped when they closed Blue Sky Studios and later got picked up by Netflix, only to receive glowing reviews from just about everyone...but one of the core reasons that Head of Story Mark Kennedy cites for why they changed this scene (aside from wanting Star to be mute and not a shapeshifter like other Disney characters, which I'm a bit confused about because yeah, Disney's done cute, mute non-human characters before too -- what about Dopey, Pascal, Maximus, Dumbo, Bambi, Magic Carpet, Sven, and again Tinker Bell?) is that they wanted Asha to be the hero and be able to "solve all her problems" without Star's help.
Up to a point, I understand what Kennedy means -- the theme of the film is supposed to be that we all have the power inside of us to make a difference, and that's great. But by making it so that Asha doesn't need any help from Star, it takes something away from their relationship. No human is an island, and relationships, both in stories and real life, are often built on that fact. Just look at Ariel and Eric in the original Little Mermaid -- Ariel saves Eric from drowning and from Ursula zapping him with Triton's trident, and then Eric saves Ariel from Ursula by skewering her with the broken figurehead of a ship. Even in non-romantic examples, we have Judy and Nick having to help each other solve the case in Zootopia; Buzz and Woody helping each other get back to Andy in Toy Story; the Parr family and Frozone all fighting together against Syndrome's robot with their unique powers in The Incredibles; Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver working together to save themselves and everyone else at the end of Treasure Planet; even Anna helping Elsa learn how to control her magical abilities through an act of authentic, courageous, selfless love that only she can do in Frozen. These characters needing help and deep emotional connections with others is what creates a bond between them, helps the characters grow and change into stronger people, and makes us as an audience enjoy watching the two characters together. We become invested in both the two individual characters and the relationship forged between them. Because they all have their unique strengths and weaknesses, they supplement and complete each other. Even perfect paragon Superman in most DC properties isn't an island -- when he's in the Justice League, there are plenty of times where he needs help from Batman or other team members to save the day. Even Superman is a stronger character when he has people around him who can balance out his flaws.
If Asha never needs help, that runs the risk of the challenges she's facing seeming far less consequential, because no human can handle absolutely everything, all by themselves. Yes, perhaps in the finished film, Asha asks her friends to help her liberate the wishes (a task which ultimately fails, leaving Asha to confront Magnifico alone again and realize exactly what everyone has to do to defeat him on her own anyway)...but just in regards to Star and Asha's relationship -- which even the filmmakers have said is something like a "soulmate" relationship, though not in a romantic sense in the finished product -- these two can't have a meaningful connection if one of them is completely self-sufficient. This is also why quite a few Disney fans didn't like that the Little Mermaid remake changed Ursula's defeat to have it be Ariel who killed her, rather than Eric, because it hurt the "equal" dynamic between the main couple where they both helped and supported each other.
In short, "girl power" shouldn't have to mean never needing to rely on anyone else...and honestly, looking at this scene concept, we don't see Asha relying on Star too much! She's the brains of the outfit -- she's making plans; she's providing Star some much needed common sense; she's using Star's light as a distraction so they can get away...she even escapes Amaya at one point by sliding right under her horse! Asha in this storyboard is a bad-ass!
What we see in this sequence is these two characters having to help each other in order to succeed. And that would've been a great foundation on which to build more dramatic stakes and a relationship with actual pathos, whether romantic or not.

I've caved and I'm watching the hbomber youtube plagarism video. I'm about halfway in and something that stood out to me was that when James Somerton plagiarised "Tinker Bells and Evil Queens" (2000), he went and replaced words like gay and homosexual with queer and lgbt. But hbomber doesn't analyse this beyond a purely plagiarism angle. Because hbomber, a massive TRA who crowd-funded for mermaids when they were under investigation in 2018, won't go the extra step and analyse how modern, prominent "queer activists/creators" are stealing and then rewriting older, gay writers' work to suit modern lingo. He sees Somerton replace "sex roles" with "gender roles" and doesn't put two and two together. Hbomber understands that Somerton is ripping off niche, gay writers because their work is not well-known, but he won't go the extra mile and see how the modern "queer movement" for the lack of a better term is riding on the back of unwilling lgb activism.

The Pirate Queens
Pirate Queens Baela and Rhaena who kidnap the crown prince Jacaerys and the lord of the tides Lucerys.. well, it's more a rescue since the brothers' ship is sinking.
Baela & Rhaena ran away from home long time back because misogyny denied them their birthright. They were mere 8 years old then and their mother had just died. Horrible stuff happens and they sneak after their uncle Laenor who fakes his death to escape the tragedies of their house (and his homophobic father), but the ship the girls' follow him in crashes. The girls barely hold onto each other and survive, but their uncle never finds out that he was being followed. 30 years pass and the girls have grown to rule over all pirates with hair died black and enough scars to completely detach themselves from the identity of rich ladies.
They do not remember much of their previous life, only their mother's loving face and the dragons.. but their love for the skies and to take flight never leaves. However, they have no wish to return to dragons and the so called honorable houses where little girls are thrown under grown men. Baela and Rhaena have been free at the sea long enough to understand the madness they come from. However, one day, Rhaena hears of the tale of the flying ship and curiosity makes her seek out the storyteller who sits on a grand ship. The man is tall with a head full of black curly hair and his skin has just the slightest bit of green tinge to it. Rhaena snorts because she sees his commander clothes, but also knows a person out of their depth.. she has learnt to recognize it otherwise she would just send more people to absolutely unnecessary deaths. Better that the land creatures stay on their lands instead of trying to find fins and gills at the bottom of the ocean. The seas didn't come naturally to many, not in the way it did to her and Baela, so she wonders how this man came to be commander.
The commander/storyteller is joined by an older man with a striking resemblance to him and together they continue his story about Peter Pan helping Wendy fly with a bit of magical dust and then.. oh! A flying ship!
Rhaena almost gasps, but a hand closes around her mouth before she can and she relaxes in the hold. Baela
The older man (brother to the storyteller, Rhaena guesses) has a small ship figurine he mimics flying in the air and the sailors around the two men look enchanted. Rhaena looks back at her sister and there is a twinkle in her older sister's eye..who looks enchanted at the sight of the man with the figurine just as the sailors do and Rhaena can see the trouble the pirate queen is going to bring on their heads.. she cannot wait to assist her.
And so, by absolutely no evil machinations on the part of Baela and Rhaena, the ship of the storyteller crashes and well, what are pirates to do but sack and steal? Rhaena is disappointed at the lack of pretty dresses (Luke makes sure to always stack his ships full of dresses later on so that the pirate queens may sack happily). She's not the world's most fashionable pirate for nothing. But she guess the storyteller will have to do. He can regail her with stories of Peter Pan. And if she feels like Peter Pan stealing herself a Wendy who will tell her stories, she keeps it to herself until maybe the sisters' 4th or 5th kidnapping of the princes.
And one day, she hopes, maybe they can find a tinker bell who will sprinkle her magical dust to make Baela and Rhaena's ship Laena, fly. The magic would have to be strong to achieve such a feat, but with the help of Jace and Luke's aunty Alys, they just might be able to do it.
Epilogue: Captain Hook Aemond One-Eye comes to steals Wendy Luke who goes with him happily.. Apparently being kidnapped is not a new thing for the princes. Sometimes it's dragons, sometimes it's wolves and recently it's pirate queens. Basically, Jace and Luke become Baela and Rhaena's land husbands whom they come to visit from time to time unless the girls get impatient and just steal them. Baela has other land husbands too and Jace is a lovely addition to her harem while Jace has other husbands and a wife (Cregan, Aegon, Helaena) and Baela is a positively feral enchanting addition to his harem. Rhaena and Luke share a more platonic love much like Rhaenyra and Laenor once did because they are both super gay, but also soulmates because Peter Pan and Wendy will always be soulmates. Captain Hook cough Aemond cough is a jealous dragon, but he has no choice but to concede to his beloved. He anyway has Alys to keep him company as he follows after her like a lost boy handing her this potion and that herb to help Laena take to the skies.

The concept here is to send in a question or a letter request, and you’ll get a response from your fictional character of choice, from the list below. Please stick to the list I’ve made, but of course, you can ask if there’s some other characters I write for, I don’t always remember all the shows, movies or books I’ve consumed over the years and I’m sure I’m missing a lot 😅

I don't know when but I'm going to go through the videos and find the soruces of the stuff that James Somerton took,
coz the thoughts he had were tasty, and I'd like the full knowledge
we usually listen to video essays whilst playing games so we don't see the screen, and assumed he was doing it like how Contrapoints does...
SO we will be looking into it.
Go check out libraries btw, I went to buy Tinker Belles and Evil Queens, and its like minimum $54 where I'm from, and ya girl/system cant afford that
If anyone has the list already, because yall are obviously better scholars obvi considering my naivity, PLEASE reblog, I'd love to consume some knowledge

Fun Fact Day!!!
Happy Wednesday friends!!! Hare are some fun facts from the nursery this week!!
The song Be Prepared from Lion King was sung by two different people. The voice of scar lost his voice during recording, so the voice of the hyena stepped in to finish the recording!
One man (Marc Davis) single-handedly animated Cruella De Vil. He also animated Snow White, Bambi, Alice, Aurora, Tinker Bell, and Maleficent!!
Oogie Boogie almost wasn't a character in Nightmare Before Christmas. It was only after Tim Burton sketched the look for Oogie that they wrote him into the script and came up with his famous song!
When writing Tangled, writers weren't sure how Mother Gothel should look and behave. She was maternal, yet evil and that was tricky. Once they heard the song "Mother Knows Best," they immediately knew how she should be portrayed.
Hades is modeled after a fast talking salesman.
Most Disney villains wear red, black, purple, or some combination of the three.
The evil queen from Snow White has a name!! It's Queen Grimhilde!

Wishing you all a happy new year and to Disney, a belated 100th anniversary! 🎉
To celebrate Disney’s century milestone, I created an illustration based on 100 of Disney’s most known and loved characters from their respective movies/ series. I’ve included all the ones I’ve known and feel are generally popular but I’m sorry if your personal favourites aren’t here.
This has been in the works for almost four months now but due to many delays I couldn’t finish it on time. So here it finally is!
Out of all these range characters, the hardest to draw was the Cars. I’m not used to drawing cars so I’m not generally good at them (yet). Some of these may look simple and easy to draw but trust me, they’re not 😂.
With drawing the characters and the background, I like to be accurate with the respective style it’s drawn/ animated in and the colours too. But also I wanted to also simplify the 3D ones and add a little depth using shadow to the 2D ones. For example some of these films would have a desaturated grainy effect to it and I wanted to keep that. But finally after months of working on it, it’s completed and I’m happy with it! ✨.
Please, please do check it out on Instagram too:
