Good morrow.

Today I am here to discuss one of my all-time favorite shots in Tales of Arcadia. It's incredibly brief, and the part that makes it my favorite isn't even really the focus of the shot. It's this:

This shot appears in both halves of the Trollhunters/3Below crossover, and that's because of how telling it is. Up to this point in Trollhunters, Aja and Krel seem just completely oblivious and doofy.

And then we get this look from Krel, and the doofiness doesn't add up anymore. This tiny little shot is key to exposing how intelligent and aware Krel actually is in this moment. It's hardened, focused, shrewd- this look is more Krel than most of what we see in the Trollhunters half of the crossover (In Good Hands). You can build an entire sense of what Krel is truly like under his oddity just from this one little shot of his expression and body language narrowing in on the screen. You can see his royal regality for a moment in the way his shoulders set; you can see in his eyes just how much he's absorbing and comprehending inside.

And wow is that just some truly incredible work from the animators.

Just finished showing my boyfriend Tales of Arcadia. Some of his thoughts (please note these opinions do not represent the opinions of everyone associated with this blog, most notably that of the first bullet point):

- Varvatos Vex is what makes 3 Below watchable.

-“I hate it,” in response to the ending. “It implies the amulet chose wrong the first time.”

- The 9th configuration is so conceptually lame.

- Archie’s dad rocks.

- The animation in the movie is beautiful, Nari’s design is so pretty, and the Titan’s design is very cool.

- Steve’s mpreg: it’s funny but I hate it.

- Toby being the butt of the joke at the beginning of the movie about not knowing where to send him because they don’t think he’s good for anything is such a disservice to his character and regressive on the writers’ parts, especially since it’s Blinky saying it.

- The idea of a magic neutralizing ray is ridiculous, and makes Toby’s “sacrifice” all the more ridiculous.

- Akiridion tech and magic being compatible is kind of like when Thor says that Asgard’s tech is what humans call magic.

- Steve was robbed of being the first Knight of the modern age, a competent and skillful person who can actually do anything.

I feel like Arcadia Oaks from Tales of Arcadia and Amity Park from Danny Phantom, if they existed in the same universe, would both be weird, but like, in opposite ends of the spectrum.

Like, Arcadia sits on top of a primordial hearthstone, the last one and also the biggest. Magic radiates throughout the town. Everyone who lives there is a little more in tune with nature. Everything and everyone is just a little too perfect. Everyone’s a little to pretty. They live a little too long. Their eyes sparkle with something more. Their streets are too clean and outsiders feel like they’re walking into a dream when they visit. It’s almost eerily enchanting.

Amity Park is on the opposite spectrum. Everything there is off. When comparing the two towns, people will notice a lot of similarities but they can’t quite put there finger on what makes Amity so off-putting. Everyone lives a little too long. Their eyes sparkle with something more. All of these qualities are shared between the two towns, but one is enchanting and the other is terrifying.

Either way, very few outsiders can stand to stay more than a few days.
