To evade a tokoloshe, one should elevate the legs of their bed. To capture and banish the creature, one would have to ask for help from a spiritual healer.

After the incidents at Kal Tur's Golden-Eye, the Tokolosh protocols from the Mfecane were repackaged and sold on the open market. The House of Sulfur took advantage of this both for operational intelligence as well as for force multiplication.

Welcome to all our new readers. (Thanks Johnnie!)
‘Kongos’: John Kongos Hi! … and a very warm welcome to everyone who may have joined us for the first time at ‘Once Upon a Time in The ’70s’ as a result of hearing our mention on the Johnnie Walker’s Sounds of The ’70s radio show. I should firstly thank Johnnie and his team for allowing John Kongos his second, and I suspect, final entry into The Jukebox. I have to concede, I took pelters at…

day 20 of horror mythology: tikoloshe
tikoloshe are a mischievous and evil spirit that can become invisible by drinking water or swallowing a stone. tokoloshes are called upon by malevolent people to cause trouble for others. at its least harmful, a tokoloshe can be used to scare children, but its power extends to causing illness or even the death of the victim.

what other beasts do you like/do you think you'd go beastwatching for...
You sent me this ask a while back and I actually had a reply but my phone got rid of it by accident but... for me I am willing to go beast watching for any creature that I haven't seen yet, which in Britain is most of them. If I were to make a short list of what I would definitely go for here:
Red Squirrels. I am dying to see one of these guys, please give me their address now (I have their address but I've never seen one still, it's kinda unfair!)
Badgers. I have seen a dead one that had it's head removed and defleshed (I took it home with me) but could I see a living one please. Can the British stop killing them for one (1) second!
Scottish Wildcats. Kinda a hard one to see since their range is even more limited than the Red Squirrel. Still would be neat to take a look at!
European Moles. This blind bastard is literally unfindable. Please let me find her so I can take a flick of him and then rebury them in the ground thank you!
Eurasian Otters. Why haven't I seen this thing once! I guarantee I find it one time, I'm gonna end up seeing it a dozen other times and then it'll slightly lose it's luster. Please let me find them.
Red Deers. The largest deer species that's native to the UK. I would just like to see one because it seems neat. That is all.
Now if I were to make a South African equivalent of this list I have a lot more to work with:
Aardvarks. The creature that brought destruction on the animal kingdom in /Xam myth, it is so weird looking and I wish to see it.
Yellow Mongoose. Kinda overshadowed by it's Meerkat cousins but this freak has some nice quirks like it's rectangular eyes it has for no reason.
Ground Pangolins. I mean look at it. It's a reptilian mammal. It's perhaps the most fantastical of all creatures on earth and I wish to watch it doddering around the Karoo.
Common Elands. The largest antelope on earth. 1.6 metres tall and 600 kg heavy, this shit can jump over you with ease. Every step it makes is accompanied by clicking noises. What's not love about this thing.
Mohol Galagos/Brown Greater Galagos. Either one of these freaky night apes will do... I just really want to see one because they're just so bizarre. What if lemurs were only nocturnal and also looked like Tokoloshe.
Riverine Rabbits. It might seem a bit of an odd pic since they're just bunny but also they're bunny that's critically endangered and are essentially the rabbit of the Karoo so i feel like they'd be interesting to look at specifically.
There are many other beasties (all of them essentially) in both countries that I'd love to look at but these are the major ones!

Anywayssss reminder that Goblin a European creature meant to depict the grotesque charictures of Jewish people because of the hatred for us from the Christians.
The Tokoloshes are a creature from South African Folklore they’d describe as a water sprite. The Zulu people in a few interviews with Journalists have said they learned about the Tokoloshes from the Xosha. Word of mouth transference of culture and spiritual practices is very common in Africa and until Journalists and Anthropologists become committed to taking down their history in respectful good faith the ones of the past burned any and all literature.
Taking something spiritual that the Zulu truly believe in and writing it off as mythology because it does not align with Christian or Atheistic values is a very tried and true method of cultural genocide. Don’t do this. Their beliefs are not in anyway affecting your life.
Anyways the Tokoloshes are malevolent creatures who wreak havoc and can cause storms as well is used as a way to frighten children into behaving. Original Xosha descriptions of the Tokoloshes describe them as short hairy all over men like a baboon but squished. In Zulu tradition it is described more like an apparition or ghost like creature.
They have evil powers such as calling storms as in 2000 journalists were told Tokoloshes summoned the tornado that wrecked a neighborhood. And many say looking into their eyes in a mark for death. The Tokoloshe are an evil spirit that must be banished to protect people.
In 1933 a man became so frightened of what he was convinced was a Tokoloshe he killed his young cousin he mistook for the Tokoloshe. The high courts argued in defense that he had a mistake of fact his cousin for the creature but the courts argued it must be a mistake a reasonable man could make. However determining he was not a reasonable man they took his sentence from death to impriosonment. This was of course during apartheid and any cultural beliefs were written off as fantasy and myth where as belief in God was absolute. The racist split between myth and religion.
I tell these stories to make it clear that the Tokoloshe are a very real creature in Xosha and Zulu cultures. And there are lots of modern accurate and apartheid inaccurate accounts of them. If you wanted to depict them as a creature who comes to wreak havoc I imagine it would be possible to do so in a respectful way. But that would require respect for these spiritual beliefs to be there in the first place which in most cases I trust it is not.
Sources:
The Tikoloshe and the Reasonable Man: Transgressing South African Legal Fictions by Patrick Lenta
Tokoloshe Tales: Reflections on the Cultural Politics of Journalism in South Africa by Leslie Fonda Green
These two are sources I double checked today there are other bits I remember from actively learning in my pre colonial africa class. And if you look there are likely more modern pieces as well

i see posts going around about the creator of the mod pack that has the barakoa mobs here is the creators response:
Tumblr media
the creator claims that they meant to model the mobs after tokoloshes from zulu mythology. here is why i don't believe this for one second:
here is what tokoloshe are typically modelled as:
Tumblr media
goblins. they are goblins. tokoloshe are mischievous goblins that are said to take lifes while you sleep.
here is the original mobs that the creator made:
Tumblr media
these look and act nothing like tokoloshe. the creator mentions that they changed the skin to green and added pointy ears to better represent their idea:
Tumblr media
the fact is the only thing these mobs have in common with the tokoloshe is the green skin and pointy ears that were added only after people pointed out the racist connotations that these mobs held.
these mobs hunt in tribes and even have a 'chief' they wear masks and other traditionally indigenous attire. they have body paint and they will become passive only if you kill them and wear their masks. nothing i just mentioned is anyway related to tokoloshe.
the masks might be the biggest red flag considering the tokoloshe do not wear them in any form yet the mob name 'barakoa' literally means mask so clearly this is something the creator felt was important to the mobs design
i will not give a white person the benefit of the doubt especially a white person with the worlds shakiest excuse.

Starlight Furnace - Hercynian Lowlands
Lazarus - VTT Sci-Fi Tactical Map
On FoundryVTT, using Grapejuice Isometrics.
This week on Saturday lancer, the party began their dragon hunt on Caliburnus. They'd need to trek through the wilderness, using their skills to avoid riling up the forest too much while approaching their prey. They opted to take the river path, and ran into the Metal Men.
While previous Cynthia seemed to have made a good impression on them, at the sight of Ea (Ria's mech), they were sent into a frenzy and started attacking the party.
Mission deets under cut:
Mission // 005
Dragon Hunt
After the tense mission on Ulone Fortuna Wing decides to travel first to Cephus for vacation, and then to Caliburnus once Dandelion's curiosity of the oddities regarding Arianna's home become too much to bear. Caliburnus is an incredibly dangerous world, and simply leaving the settlement necessitates being in a mech suit lest one perishes.
Driven to seek answers, the party requests a chance to hunt a dragon as Arianna has mentioned them before, and Maeve grants them the right—but no more than that—to drive off Tiarna Dóiteáin who has nested close enough to be a risk. Arianna hopes to speak with the other Cursed Ones in order to find why Ea has gone silent, but before that they must succeed in hunting the Lord of Fire…
Goals
Find the Lord of Fire's resting place.
Drive the "dragon" off.
Enemy OPFOR
Wildly varied local flora and fauna, likely primarily biological units.
Though the locals and Arianna are familiar with the wildlife, that does not necessarily translate into Scan-quality knowledge.
Potential encounters include: Metal Men, Centaurus, Ironbeaks, Steel Crackers, Furnace Flowers, Shambling Trees, Vine Men, Luring Snappers, Rolling Clickers, Web Swarmers, Strangling Waters, Living Flames, Moving Forests, and Dragon Scales.
Reserves
Environmental shielding (On Ria)
Boosted Servos
Access
Knowledge
Special Conditions
Living World: At the start of every Round, roll 1d6. On 4+, the location of every character that moved last Round is targeted by "Living Thorns", which activate at the end of the current Round.
Choking Miasma: Areas around fungal terrain count as Hard Cover, but units within them cannot draw Line of Sight outside of them. These areas are designated by Purple measurement templates.
Hostile Flora: Ending a turn in soft cover granted by plants deals 1 AP Kinetic damage. Any attempt to clear out plant-based soft cover must deal a minimum of 5 damage in a single attack, otherwise the cover is unaffected. Fire/fire-effects from attacks or abilities do not spread, unless explicitly stated by it.
River Path
The Great Tree that Làirig Dhrù rests upon condenses much of the local rainfall, converting it into flowing rivers leading down. Following this flow allows for quick traversal, assuming you're willing to risk the dangers involved.
Primary Objective: Defeat all enemy units.
Secondary Objective // 1: Allow a Metal Man to summon a Moving Forest, then defeat it. (0/1)
Reward: x1 CORE battery As a rule, even the most hostile of flora seem to respect the Metal Men. Likely due to their inedible nature, and tendency to care for them.
Special Conditions
Torus: Moving into one of the Torus's hexes immediately causes that unit to be randomly teleported to one of the other Torus hexes.
Enemy comp for this map includes:
Metal Men, who are Tokolosh (Field Guide to Mfecane) Veterans with a special ability to affect both Biological units with tech attacks and spend a Full Action to summon Reinforcements. Their gimmick is to Lure players out of hiding, slap them with Death Clock to force a player to maintain Danger Zone. This combos with—
Ironbeaks, who are Nosferatu (Lancer Enhanced Combat) that primarily hunt high heat targets. While not mandatory, I played them as predator animals mostly focused on hunting down high heat (both player and enemy), so they mostly hover out of combat and only swoop in when someone hits the Danger Zone. The Bite to absorb heat, then attack repeatedly with Talon once exposed. +Heat Seeking to make their targeting priorities clear. Slightly customized with the Monstrosity's +Winged.
Furnace Flower Seedlings, who are Stormcallers (Field Guide to Liminal Space) with the Turret Template (Maximum Threat) +Fixed. Their job is to mostly be a long range nuisance on the other side of the river, forcing players to deal with them or slowly get burned and impaired.
Spear Roots, who are Monstrosities with +Natural Camouflage and +Burrower. They only activate when someone is within LOS and Sensors, and then will target whoever they think is the weakest. Mostly just a hassle.
Vine Blights, Monstrosity Grunts with the Revenant Template (Maximum Threat), whose gimmick is being able to survive dying once (unless overkilled enough to remove the wreckage). Low risk but demanding two actions across two Rounds to put down for good.
Vine Men, Barricades with the Horror Template (Dustgrave), but really just for a custom trait called +Living that turns them Biological. Comes with +Drag Down to be a threat to the team's Nelson.
Walking Forest, a Brute (Lancer Enhanced Combat) Veteran with a renamed +Grafted Weapon who job it is is to be a big scary meatshield.
Had to call it at the top of Round 4, we rolled Living Thorns going off every Round. Burst 4, attack roll for 4 AP Kinetic damage Hull Save vs Prone, miss halves damage and no Prone. Not supposed to be huge damage (and the attack roll means our Saladin's abilities can help reduce damage or risk), but makes a constant pressure on the players when it goes off. You can only ever be attacked by a single Living Thorn no matter how many aoes you are in.

❝ That? Yes i´m rather fond of it myself. ❞ Lips curled into a smile, glancing up from her paperwork to the object in question. To the left side of her office, within a small glass case, sat a rather unusual hologram depicting a terrifying mask hovering mere inches above a purple cushion. ❝ Itś a Tokoloshe. A Zulu-Xhosa trickster spirit. They believe that to summon it, you have to give up a loved one, only you'll never know who you´ve condemned until it happens. I left the real mask back in Pretoria in the early 2000´s, or perhaps it was Cape town, I can´t quite remember which .... ❞ She trailed off, smile faltering as she caught sight of Chloe´s face in the reflection of the glass. ❝ ..... everything alright? You look like you´ve seen a ghost. ❞

The Umnyama [Zulu mythology; South African mythology]
In Zulu mythology, the Umnyama is an enigmatic aquatic creature. It resembles a common sheep, but it lives in ponds and pools. The skin of these beings is a potent magical component and can be used by diviners to cast a magical protection against lightning. As such, these creatures are highly prized and coveted by sorcerers.
It is, however, very difficult to find an Umnyama because it only lives in ponds at the end of rainbows (which, obviously, don’t actually exist). If you do manage to find such a pond, be very careful not to touch the rainbow, as doing so will either make you ill or curse you, and you’d be the victim of some horrible disaster.
