Pokémon Gym Leaders if they were from Paldea: Gen 1

Ever wonder what it would be like to see the return of past Gym Leaders in Gen 9? Maybe there's a worldwide tournament that they're participating in, or maybe it's more of a group vacation.

#1 Brock

Brock would be excited to try out some of the new Rock types in Paldea. Glimmora, Garganacl, and Klawf's Trap set-ups and general tankiness, plus Lycanroc's Dusk form as his speedy attacker, would make for a pretty balanced team to make-up for the lack of Fossil Pokémon in Paldea. Sudowoodo and Forretress would be there mostly as a reference to the anime, but also to show off Sturdy that is so common with Rock types. Forretress specifically would be Brock's Tera-Pokémon, paired with either Rock Tomb or Rock Slide for Brock to give to Trainers as a TM.

#2 Misty

Misty's team is a good blend of familiar and new Pokémon alike. Golduck is an obvious choice considering her partner in the anime, while Whiscash offers some defense against Electric-types. Azumarill would be her heavy hitter, while Palafin and Wugtrio would offer a nice mix of speed and power. Finally, Misty would be excited to use Wooper's new evolution as a Tera-Pokémon, as Clodsire offers defense against Electric-types and can be paired with Waterfall as a last resort.

#3 Lt. Surge

Lt. Surge would be throw Ampharos, Jolteon, and Raichu on his team, both for the Electric power they'd bring to his team as well as the fact that he used them during The War. He'd use Kilowattrel to speed up his team with Tailwind while also powering itself up a bit for some quick attacks, and a Hidden Ability Pawmot would offer some physical damage as well as type coverage. He'd wrap up the battle with Bronzong as his Tera-Pokémon finisher, taking advantage of Levitate to allow him to power up with Charge Beam while tanking through his opponent's attacks.

#4 Erika

Erika doesn't just love Grass-type Pokémon, she loves Grass-type Pokémon that resemble plants. She'd enjoy the new dual-type pairings of Arboliva, Brambleghast, and Scovillain, while also utilizing the classic Grass-types Jumpluff and Lilligant. She'd select Stonjourner as her Tera-Pokémon for defense against Fire, Flying, and Bug types, but also because it can be used as shelf for potted plants when not in battle.

#5 Koga

Being away from Kanto, Koga would want to take advantage of trying out the new Poison-types that Paldea has to offer. Did you know that Toxapex, Toxicroak, and Toxtricity all start would with "Tox"?. Because that's a large reason for their place on Koga's team. Besides that, he'd enjoy the type pairings of Grafaiai and Revavroom, although he would be a little disappointed that his personal favorite Crobat isn't in Paldea. No worries, though, because he'd have his new Noivern cosplaying as one with a Poison Tera-type. He'd also be the first Gym Leader to utilize the new move Tera Blast, which is fitting considering Noivern can't learn any Poison moves and Koga is the first Gym Leader of the back-half of the Gym Challenge.

#6 Sabrina

Sabrina likes playing with dolls back home, so some of the first Pokémon she'd add to her Paldean team would be those those resembling humans, specifically Armorouge, Gallade, and Gardevoir. She'd also enjoy Rabsca and Veluza as dual-type Psychic pets that she can bring home to Kanto. Finally, because there's so many Ghost-types at her gym in Kanto, she'd use a Psychic Tera-type Mismagius to show off her spooky side.

#7 Blaine

Blaine would enjoy the mix of Fire-types in Paldea to help him forget that he is a monster and a war criminal. Arcanine, Flareon, and the new form of Tauros would help keep him from getting homesick, while Torkoal can prepare the battlefield for them with Drought. Ceruledge looks quite similar to Blaine's most famous creation that murdered a bunch of people back home, so he'd enjoy using it on his team as well. Finally, Blaine seems like a weirdo who likes bugs, so a Fromantis with Fire tera-type would be a fun final addition to his team.

(NOTE: you are not a weirdo if you like bugs. Blaine is just a weirdo who happens to also like them)

#8 Giovanni

Giovanni is a world-renowned criminal mastermind, so you'll find Ground-types from every region on his team rather than new Paldea-specific Ground-types. At least, this is what he tells people, and not the fact that all his fellow Gym Leaders caught the cool new Ground-Types first and he wanted to seem original. To back up this new team, Gio would also use a Persian with Ground tera-type and Dig, because he's a cat guy and that's not gonna change any time or any day.

thus far i’ve concluded ultra moon is good, i love all of my team very much,,,

for those curious, my team’s rusty the incineroar (moves are flame charge, darkest lariat, double kick, and flamethrower, and he has the incinium z or whatever it’s called), grub the vikavolt (zap cannon, dig, x-scissor, thunderbolt, has electrium z), sparky the alolan raichu (brick break, volt tackle, thunderbolt, psychic, has the aloraichium z), pokey the slowbro (i don’t remember one of his moves but he has slack off, psychic(? might be psybeam) and water pulse, and the waterium z), tox the alolan muk (crunch, poison gas, poison fang, rock tomb, has the darknium z,,, also i wish i taught her gunk shot-), and nectar the floette (moonblast, petal blizzard, fairy wind, aromatherapy, has the grassnium z) and i love them all. yes i am very good at nicknames.

tox is a groomer and a pedophile, due to past actions, and if you believe pedophiles can grow in 3 years that's fine (we don’t personally because sex offenders register for life btw) but this pedophile has not grown at all, proven by this conversation that literally happened in november of 2021. not even 3 full months ago.

keep in mind they’re still talking about CHILD PORN, and later refers to CHILD PORN as a “squick” like it’s mildly uncomfortable to see and not something that is traumatic, illegal, or downright evil in real or fictional context. conflating what's legal and what's morally right is a form of child grooming. this is a known tactic used to break down natural/societal boundaries before sexual abuse of a minor person can occur.

we’re noting tox's preoccupation with what "isn't a crime" or dictating where the "illegal" label can or should be applied and it's quite literally a dangerous slope. that is the same sort of tactic people use to question the validity of age of consent laws. whether cp is of a fictional child or not, regular exposure to drawn cp literally serves to desensitize actual minors to what is and isn't a normal relationship with an adult individual. proshippers want cp to be more mainstream and accepted. it's literally the point of being a groomer.

they’re obviously not competitive teams but i’m trying not to give every member of the team 100% cut-and-dry attack sets... needle has spikes/tox spikes/stockpile/explosion and black sludge to replenish health... liron has fake out, dark pulse, zen headbutt, and confuse ray + king’s rock as a flinch set... juno has giga drain/drain punch/draining kiss/leech life + big root for an hp regen set... dunno if there’s anything i can really do with the raichu or zweilous

Cinderace|Blitz: Honestly it’s not surprising that I picked Scorbunny, I’ve played since Gen 1 & have always chosen the fire type, it’s tradition at this point. I love him very much he is energetic and loud.

Toxtricity|Vikktor: The son of my blue Tox, Stein, I’d been enamored with the yellow version and so hatched a few eggs until I managed to get one with the correct nature. He is surprisingly tanky, and very loveable. One of the Pokemon I’d been considering adding to my team but wasn’t 100% sure on.

Goodra|Everglow: My shiny honestly I feel like I always have the urge to have at least one shiny on my team since SM with my Raichu. It was a long & tedious process but well worth it. He’s surprisingly energetic and loves running around with Blitz in camp.

Rapidash|Debutante: One I knew just had to be on my team, she was in a three way tie though, between Hatterene & Alcremie, but in the end her duel typing of both psychic & fairy won out - plus the fact that I can’t stop oogling at the way her mane moves around when she walks around camp.

Barraskewda|Heart: This. Fucker. THIS. FUCKER. I didn’t want him on my team, I didn’t plan to have him on my team. He wasn’t even on my radar. But I needed a water type fairly early on and managed to catch this boy - I made the fatal mistake of making a camp with him in my team and oh my god. He won me over with his giddy excitable face. He is easily steals the spotlight, whenever I take out any toys he swims over to play with it, and he’s one of the few who will come up and say hello all on his own. 10/10. You get +1 Internet Cookie if you know where is name is from.

Frosmoth|Decadence: Last but not least - another one I was almost certain I wanted on my team. She is gorgeous, tanky and a true bombastic babe. I love her aesthetic, her personality (very methodoical around the camp) and the fact that her and Debutante get along so well and spend all their time judging the other kiddos.

Bug Run 4: Through Fog, Smoke and Snow

Diving boldly forth into the fog of night, I eagerly set out!

But I am a tight-ass bitch who doesn’t want to waste a move slot on Defog, so instead I toughed it out with thrilling battles such as these:

Yeah. ROFLCOPTER still doesn’t have a flying move. It’s pretty messed up, honestly.

Battles on this route were a rather dreary affair, the most difficult being a tag-team of Raichu and Gyarados. Eventually I clawed my way out of the fog and immerged into the sleepy town of Celestic. Although it’s not so sleepy tonight, as an old lady informs me a spaceman is ranting about a bomb. I go kick his butt, check out some cave paintings, and then Cyrus pays me a visit.

After all my trouble to lay down tox spikes on his opening poke, I find out his next two are Crobat and Murkrow. Dangit. Cleo’s Power Gem is essential for flying types, although I mix it up a little this time and try some Ancient Powers to finish things off. It really wasn’t a problem.

Running into Gavin at Canalave, however …that was a little scary. Cleo took out his Staraptor just fine, because she’s a tanky beast, but next up was fully-evolved Infernape, a few levels higher then me. Ooof.

After a lot of thinking I sent Sparkler out against him. She was my fastest with a useful move. I tried Psybeam, but not surprisingly, Infernape still outsped.

What was surprising, though, was that Sparkler lived on 8 HP and got a good Mind-Plate-powered Psybeam off. Not enough to finish things entirely, but I used toxic and stalled him out with Cleo the rest of the way, just barely.

Next was his Heracross.I had Fiberglass’ Psybeam for that, no problem. Except, uhh. Despite my decent defense and Brick Break only being neutral, it was still doing a huge chunk. I couldn’t win at this rate. I swapped to ROFLCOPTER, feeling the pain of lacking a Flying move more keenly then over. Pelted away with Ancient Powers until eventually Heracross went down.

Finally was Floatzel, and after the rest of my Ancient Powers, I just chipped away with Pursuit until he caved.

So that was that. MAN, I need to get decent moves on Yanmega.

Next, I went to train hard in the gym! I never miss my workout! Just …gimme a minute let me watch some TV, I’ll go soon … *grabs a bag of chips* *flops on couch*

Hey, see? The TV says bug lovers are happy, well-adjusted people. We’re not freaks, I swear.

Anyway, I eventually got off my butt and went to visit Byron in his steely gym of doom. Most of his underlings were easy pickings for Sparkler’s HP-ground. For the rare few with Levitate, I had plenty of others to deal with it.

Byron himself, however, wasn’t exactly a pushover.

I did the Byron fight twice. The first time, Black Fang crit the opening Magneton and 1HKO’d. Buuuuut then Bastiodon came out and wrecked my face with Stone Edges. I had to try again and think a little harder about strategy instead of charging in so recklessly.

Second time round, Black Fang only got Magneton a little below half HP with his Dig. Somebody had to faint to give my Mothim a safe switch-in. I decided to toss ROFL out there for the slaughter, as I doubted he’d be doing much this match. Sparkler took Magneton out, but next was Bastiodon. I used Hidden Power Ground, did a great chunk but activated Bastiodon’s berry and healed him back up to 3/4s HP. Goddamnit. I hoped for a miss, but down Sparkler went to Stone Edge. Not a chance in heck he was livin’ that.

Next, I sent out Maestro. He’s easily my weakest of the team; I’m willing to bet nobody has ever sung the praises of Kricketune’s base stat totals. Around this time in the run, he’s been really struggling to be useful on the team at all, usually going down in one hit to everything. It makes sense; he’s available so early-on in the game, and those pokes tend to have low base stats. Sooner or later, that fact was going to bite Maestro in the butt.

Still, I had a plan. I’d recently given Maestro Brick Break. This fantastic upgrade was 4x effective on Bastiodon. The only thing is, I knew from my last attempt it wasn’t a 1HKO. I had to Screech if I had any hope at all. I also knew Maestro went down to a single Stone Edge, so it would be up to the others to somehow chip away at Bastiodon… maybe? Though … that seemed unlikely. I had to try, though.

I screeched. It thankfully landed. And … Stone Edge missed. Sweet mercy. After that, Maestro was able to take level 41 Bastiodon out clean. Hoorah! Maestro took out Byron’s ace!! HE DID A THING!

The final was Steelix, though. I tried Brick Break first, and was apalled at how little it did. Utterly disgusting. So I screeched again, but this time it missed, unfortunately. However, Maestro managed to survive long enough to try one more time, successfully landing the second screech before going down. This ended up being very essential indeed.

Things were a bit tricky, because I didn’t exactly have much for Steelix– especially with Sparkler down, since Sparkler and his HP Ground was my main go-to for dealing with all these Steel and Rock types. I sent out Fiberglass and tried out a Bug Bite just to see … mmm yeah that’s not working in a million years. Psybeam was no better, quite frankly. Steelix took Fiber out with several Earthquakes.

Out of other options, I put Cleopatra out. I had to hope the Screech would be enough help for her to chip away with her newly-learned Attack Order. I honestly thought the battle was done at that point, though, because if Steelix knew Rock Slide …

Steelix used Ice Fang on me and the damage really wasn’t too horrible for super-effective damage. Ok, if that was the best he could use on me, I could work with this. I chipped away with Attack Order and kept healing up. Steelix used Sandstorm to do more chip damage for me– but despite the super effective Ice Fang and the Sandstorm, if I was careful enough with my heals and when I timed my attacks, I could maintain a good amount of health and come out on top.

It was a very slow process, though, and I was terrified of getting frozen, which had decent odds considering how many ice fangs I was taking. That would probably spell the end. Still, I couldn’t get too hasty.

Another thing I knew was probably coming was Byron would probably soon use–

Yeah, Full Restore. MMM THAT’S GREAT.

So back to chipping away all over again.

Somehow, I eventually prevailed (and was thankful Byron did not use another Full Restore).

(everyone was level 36 except Cleo and Sparkler at lvl 38)

After this was some more Team Galactic plot and exploding lakes, but beating the grunts and even the admins was really pretty trivial. After taking care of two lakes it was time to head in the direction of the final lake, first passing through Mt. Coronet.

Charging through the snow, I didn’t expect to have many problems, but almost immediately ran into somebody with a high-levelled Tropius and I was convinced I was going to full-party wipe after my ace Cleo was taken out. I’d stalled long enough for Maestro to take care of it, though. Whoo. Maybe I should be more careful.

I hadn’t exactly started out on this journey well-stocked, either. A little resthouse saved me from that problem, fortunately. Yeah! W-we’re good! Let’s just carry on then!

… oof. I was fine until an Electabuzz and Magmar tagteam wrecked my shit. I decided to backtrack and train on some of the other Ace Trainers, only to meet somebody with a Golduck, Rapidash and Sudoowoodoo that also wrecked my shit. A second try with a LOT of careful planning had me scraping through, though: lay down toxic spikes at the start with Golduck, clear Golduck out with Yanmega to get my speed boosts up and running, hit Rapidash with a good Ancient Power, then come in and finish stalling with Cleopatra. Sudoowoodoo was tough, though, man, his Rock Slide taking Cleo out cold. Black Fang got one Dig off, and then Maestro could finish with Brick Break.

Did I mention I was working with only five pokes since I had an HM slave at the time? All of them sub-level 40? Boy.

Getting past the gatekeeper with the Electabuzz and Magmar was going to take some thinking, though. I decided I’d leave that for another day, though. It had been a long day of work, and we all deserved to retire for the night in our rustic lodge.
