"At nearly 150 acres, the Jardim Gramacho landfill in Rio de Janeiro was one of the largest and most infamous in all of Latin America. Now it’s a mangrove forest teeming with life.
Decommissioned 11 years ago, between 1970 and 2012 the dump, bordering Rio’s famous Guanabara Bay, received 80 million metric tonnes of trash from the area’s Gramacho neighborhood.
Now, a public-private partnership led by the Rio Municipal Cleaning Company has returned the area to nature, specifically mangroves, one of the most valuable of all ecosystems.
Planting 24 acres of mangroves at a time, today the forest stretches out more than 120 acres and is the largest mangrove area of the bay.
“Before, we polluted the bay and the rivers. Now, it’s the bay and the rivers that pollute us,” a lead official on the project told Africa News. “Today, the mangrove has completely recovered.”
Other organizations have taken action to restore mangroves along the bay as well. The non-profit Ocean Pact funded the Green Guanabara Bay Project which successfully restored 12.5 hectares or around 25 acres of mangroves.
According to some estimates, 1 acre of mangrove forests can store more carbon in roots and soil than 4 acres of even the most biodiverse rainforest, making them paramount to any world climate mitigation strategy.
Furthermore, their impressive lattice work of roots and insane durability means that storm surges impacting mangroves lose about 66% of their kinetic energy without even destroying the trees.
Lastly, coastal fishing communities, in [four] words, cannot exist without mangroves. They act as nurseries and perfect habitat for all kinds of fish and crustaceans that small-scale fishermen rely on for their daily bread."

Then it heads to Canada. This excerpt from the Yale Climate Connections story:
Fiona is predicted to maintain major hurricane strength unusually far to the north, thanks to sea surface temperatures between Bermuda and Canada that are up to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6°F) above average. The 11 a.m. EDT Tuesday NHC forecast put Fiona near the eastern tip of Nova Scotia on Saturday morning as a category 2 hurricane with 100 mph winds; the Wind Probability Forecast gave several locations in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia 10-23% odds of experiencing hurricane-force winds this weekend. These odds will likely rise as Fiona approaches Canada and the track and intensity of the hurricane become clearer.
As Fiona approaches Canada, the hurricane will merge with a trough of low pressure, transition to a hurricane-strength extratropical storm, and slow down, subjecting Canada to an unusually long and severe battering by what may be one of the strongest storms ever to affect the region.
Then this one, forming, which might bump into the Gulf Coast later on:

Mighty Big Storms. Mighty Big Storm Chaser.
Mighty Big Storms. Mighty Big Storm Chaser.
After I posted my blog yesterday, I hastened to see what was happening with the tropical storms and hurricanes. Ian is the ninth named storm of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. Then there’s Fiona, that was expected to make landfall in eastern Canada before dawn on Saturday, after days of lashing Bermuda, Puerto Rico and the eastern Dominican Republic. (Dear Lord, we pray for divine…

So the newest albums in the TikTok series "EPIC: The Musical" came out about a month or two ago, and I'm just gonna say it - these songs are the catchiest songs in the series so far!
Though as I kept listening to them, I kept wondering if my Beyblade God AU would fit into the plot.
And I decided... oh heck yeah!
So I've decided that I'm starting a new series in my Work Doodles (ONLY my work doodles), in which I'm going to draw my Beyblade God AU characters singing the songs from the new albums. They'll be portrayed as the various gods and mythical characters that appear in the songs. I've already drawn the first one!

First up is the Kiyama boys, also known as the Three Winds!
They’re singing as Aeolus and her “winions” from the song “Keep Your Friends Close”, the third song in the Ocean Saga. For this concept, I guess I could have gone with the Aoi siblings, since they’re also known as the Siblings of the Storm. I decided on the Kiyama boys, though, because Odysseus and his men are technically trying to get through a tropical storm, which is more the Three Winds’ territory. Rantaro is the God of Hurricanes, Ranjiro is the God of Typhoons, and Ranzo is the God of Tornadoes, which is technically a storm that happens on land, but not having him there would make the ensemble feel incomplete.
To be honest, I find the image of Honcho singing “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer~” with Cap’n and Ranzo adding “Never really know who you can trust~” over his shoulders very funny.
And here’s the song that this doodle was based on, animated by the amazing @gigizetz , who I learned is here on Tumblr! See you guys in the next work doodle!

Tropical Storm Ophelia Affects North East Coast of US
On Friday, September 22, 2023, governors of North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland declared they were in a state of emergency as a tropical storm called Ophelia was traveling up the coast, causing strong winds up to 74 miles per hour (mph), heavy rains, and river flooding. People and animals had brushes with danger regarding the flooding , but nobody in the affected areas was hurt or killed. The…

There'll be a chance of showers on Saturday night, but the storm is expected to hit Southern California on Sunday, with the most intense rain and wind striking at night and sticking around into Monday morning.
The only difference between a hurricane and a tropical storm is wind speed, and regardless of what Hilary is downgraded to, one thing's for certain: it's going to bring enough rain to threaten communities, particularly those in the mountains and deserts.

It’s already early May and that means it’s getting close to the start of the North Atlantic Basin tropical cyclone season.
If you live on or relatively close to the coast of the North Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, or the Caribbean Sea, this is a good time to become reacquainted with how to deal with tropical cyclones. The link above provides an excellent set of reminders.
Every day during the hurricane season I visit the official NOAA site. Getting accurate information is essential in an era of disinformation.
National Hurricane Center
If you’re looking for a general forecast for the 2023 season, the go-to place is the Colorado State University Hurricane Seasonal Forecasting site. It’s ironic that a landlocked Mountain state has a university known for it’s tropical weather expertise, but the CSU team is top notch.
Here is their extended-range forecast issued on April 13th.
If you want the TL;DR forecast that isn’t over 40 pages long, here is what they predict for 2023.

So it looks like a slightly below average season in terms of activity.
But even a low activity season can bring destruction. The 1992 Atlantic season had just six named storms – but the first of those was Category 5 Hurricane Andrew which made landfall both in Florida and in Louisiana.
