A very brief turn by Frazer Hines, as stable hand Jem, in Peter Diamond's pilot for a proposed adventure series Lochinvar (1968). There was little interest in the pilot or any subsequent series, and ultimately the sole filmed episode was never transmitted - it survived in the hands of director/producer Diamond until his family donated the film stock to Kaleidoscope a few years ago.

#fave spotting #frazer hines #lochinvar #tv pilot #jamie mccrimmon #doctor who #classic doctor who #1968 #peter diamond #an unusually small role for Frazer; he may not have been lead material‚ but he's barely onscreen 30 seconds here and was a well known tv #presence thanks to stints on Emergency Ward 10 and of course DW (which he was still starring in). possibly he did this as a favour to #Diamond; a ubiquitous stunt arranger and fight choreographer‚ this was Diamond's attempt at breaking out into production and direction but #he would have known Frazer from various jobs he'd done on DW (including Frazer's intro story The Highlanders‚ where Diamond had been fight #arranger as well as having a credited acting role as a sailor). this was shot around July '68 so presumably between Frazer's work on The #Mind Robber and The Invasion; apologies for the slightly weird stretcg effect on the pics but that's true of the materials themselves #strangely Lochinvar is not in 4:3 aspect‚ despite being quite definitely a tv pilot‚ but in a strangely unnatural widescreen as if the #masters were altered at some point in post production (perhaps for a potential cinema release as a support feature?). i can only conjecture #tho. unsurprisingly there's almost no info out there about this obscure tv film that sat in a rusty can for 50 years unseen. #also my immediate thought on reading about it was that the shooting dates Very Nearly coincide with The Mind Robber shooting #(nearly but not quite) and i excitedly wondered if maybe Frazer's infamous bout of chickenpox that saw him replaced for ep2 of that serial #had secretly been a little mischievous excuse to go away and have some fun playing with horses in Buckinghamshire... alas no #Diamond would reunite with Frazer (and Lochinvar co star Noel Coleman) for the following years The War Games where he'd again #be pulling double duty as fight arranger and (uncredited) actor. later in life he would end up doing a little more directing work for tv #but afaik the Peter Diamond Productions company that made this film never worked again

just a post documenting alastor and touches throughout the show

I didn't include the pilot, but i do want to mention it, because one thing that's quite striking is how they changed that element from pilot!alastor to show!alastor somewhat. might make a separate post for the pilot at some point to compare

I also did a mix of when alastor noticeably doesn't touch someone directly and in what contexts he gets touched, as well as a couple of other related boundaries and moments of interest

ep1 overture: alastor doesn't touch anyone in this episode. also noting that this is the episode where we get him unequivocally turning down angel's advances, and avoiding being filmed several times, with the iconic "this face was made for radio" line, so not only is he not touching, he's also making some general boundaries clear

ep2 radio killed the video star: 1. niffty crawls up alastor and he picks her up and puts her down. she crawls up him again. he clearly doesn't mind 2. sir pentious rips off a corner of his coat. alastor blows him up -- he later burns the piece of coat that sir pentious had kept: "not many people have been able to take even this much off me." 3. the entirety of the vox vs al showdown is of course notably done over radio/tv, so they're never in the same room. just interesting in terms of how it goes down with them generally in s1, they're constantly kept at a distance via screens and airwaves

ep3 scrambled eggs: 1. taps an egg boi with his staff, while threatening it. generally uses his stick to interact with the egg bois -- pointing, tapping, etc 2. another brief "makes screen fuzzy on a security camera"

ep4 masquerade: notably the episode (with lots of sexual content and specifically valentino) where he doesn't appear, except for briefly in a flashback

ep5 dad beat dad: 1. shakes lucifer's cane, rather than his hand -- he also wipes his hand on his suit afterwards, as if disgusted 2. TOUCHES CHARLIE'S SHOULDER!! notably in front of lucifer in order to piss him off. then goes ONE STEP FURTHER and partially puts his arm around her when saying how proud they all are of her 3. grabs lucifer and spins him out of the way during his part of the song 4. picks niffty out of the toilet 5. during the song: dances with charlie, pats her on the head/tucks her in, and puts his hands on her shoulders 6. during the song: pushes lucifer aside again, including doing a little hip shove 7. lucifer grabs him by his lapels and gets right in his face 8. hugs mimzy 9. grabs charlie and steers her by the shoulders 10. grabs/strokes husk's ear 11. grabs husk via his leash 12. rips the bad guys apart with his tentacles. also picks them up with his hands and eats them 13. mimzy pokes him several times in the chest. he removes her finger in annoyance, and boops her on the nose condescendingly

ep6 welcome to heaven: the other episode that notably includes a sex club (and also heaven and a lot of talk about redemption) that does not involve alastor

ep7 hello rosie: 1. grabs charlie's shoulders, and then her face, forcing her to smile 2. grabs her shoulders again when talking about the angels 3. touches her hair, and then sidehugs her while selling her on the deal 4. DEAL HANDSHAKE 5. more shoulder grabbing, cheek pinching, and patting on head when he's talking about her being charming and capable 6. links arms with her while taking her to rosie 7. rosie joyfully grabs him and spins him around 8. grabs charlie when introducing her to rosie 9. gives charlie his mic in order to help her inspire the cannibals (later replaced with a cane given by rosie) 10. dances with rosie, including a little dip

ep8 the show must go on: 1. more attempted screen voyeurism by vox 2. charlie uses alastor's cane again to speech 3. niffty crawls over him again and places a crown of roaches on his head (possibly his most openly joyous moment) 4. fights adam using his shadow tentacles and creatures, before getting seriously wounded by him (and then has his famous mental breakdown at the idea that his reputation could have been blemished by having been read as altruistic of all things, *spits*) 5. the torn picture of alastor and vox shows them a little apart from one another 6. appears in the middle of the hotel gang and is hugged by charlie, patted on the back by vaggie, and also adorably hugged around the legs by niffty

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS: 1. other characters do initiate more touches, with husk being the other character who's more standoffish, but that's also his general slowly beginning to open up emotionally and he shifts especially with regards to angel after ep4 (although he does do casual pats and the like before that + the massage) 2. generally everyone touches casually in some way or other throughout the show, including in background moments, except for alastor, who always touches very deliberately, whether it's for violence, manipulation, condescension, or affection -- he doesn't seem to engage in casual touch, but does accept it from certain individuals (mainly niffty). for example in dad beat dad in which he initiates the most touches, he's pissing off lucifer and manipulating charlie. he hasn't touched her before this on the show proper, and he's doing it because he has an audience and is trying to convince both lucifer and her of something (that he's a better mentor/support system than lucifer) 3. similarly when he's being very familiar with charlie in hello rosie, he's selling her on making a deal with him, and then on making himself indispensable to her, while also grooming her*** [EDIT: been informed that this could be misread: "grooming" here meant in the general sense of mentoring her in a way that would benefit him, as he says "she's full of potential that i could guide," NOT in a sexual context] -- in true alastor fashion it's hard to say what's sincere and what's self-serving, but it certainly all serves a purpose 4. that being said, i think charlie has become a character he doesn't mind touching, just like he doesn't mind it with niffty, rosie, or mimzy. funnily enough the only time charlie initiates a touch with him is in the finale, when she's relieved he's alive 5. i think the kinds of touches from each of these characters is different. with charlie it's that aforementioned part-manipulation, part-mentor type vibe, where he's very much insinuating himself into her good graces and trust, with niffty it's because She Is A Creature Who Crawls, with mimzy there's a Past (and she clearly crosses a boundary because she thinks she can with him, and he puts his foot down on that), and with rosie there's a respect. before i did this noting down i also thought he touched rosie way more than he actually does, but he only does it once in order to dance (which, if anything else even applies, i think is his main source of actually enjoying touching others, i personally don't think he actually enjoys hugs, it's just a Thing some people expect of you), and simply acquiesces to her grabbing him in the first scene. again, i think he accepts this because he likes her 6. This Deer Does Not Touch Men If He Can Help It

CONCLUSION: if alastor respects you, he will let you touch him to an extent. he's not touchy himself, and mainly does it as a show of power, manipulation, and condescension (lucifer, mimzy, husk, charlie), but he likes dancing. he stays faaar away from sexual contexts in general

I also want to do a separate post on alastor and respect/closeness/familiarity, because i think it's worthwhile analysing how he expresses these things with characters on his terms (for example, giving charlie the mic says far more about his positive feelings towards her than any of the times he touches her), and it's mostly very clear when he's comfortable in a situation and when he's not

PJO TV SHOW Episode 3 Review:

THIS EPISODE WAS AMAZING!!!

Overall I was so happy with it. This episode really solidified that it’s an adaptation for me and got rid of any expectations that every moment would be ripped from the book and definitely helped me enjoy it more.

(At first I commented about Gabe as the oracle completely forgetting it was that way in the books too so I just deleted that comment entirely)

Some thoughts:

1. Was a little disappointed that we didn’t have Percy actually meet Blackjack and realize he could understand him. It is pretty important to his character that he has so many abilities and it’s a fan-favorite gift so it was weird choice to have Percy meet with Grover by the Pegasi and not include that moment.

2. Of course at first I was excited to get “seaweed brain” and “wise girl” but I actually don’t think their relationship is there yet in the show. In the books Annabeth shows him around so they’ve already made a connection but that hasn’t really happened yet so I’m still hopeful.

3. Clarisse should have mentioned that Ares gave her the spear in ep2 because with Luke saying he got the shoes from Hermes in this episode, both the spear and the shoes would’ve added a nice layer to the whole “gifts from the parents” commentary Percy had regarding Annabeth’s hat. So I was a little put off that they didn’t talk about either of those things as part of that.

THE GOOD STUFF!

1. Annabeth claiming Grover as being her protector first literally made me melt it was so cute.

2. There was a lot less voiceover so I felt like we actually got to experience moments with them rather than it be so expositional which was nice.

3. The conversations they added between the trio and how they approached Medusa were well done and really showed us where the show is trying to go with the characters and introduced their fatal flaws in a subtle but important way.

4. How they showed the magic of the 600th floor was fun because it just existed as it was and Lin Manuel Miranda is so funny as just a cameo.

I am so happy that I enjoyed and loved this episode. Can’t wait for next week!

The last scene in EP1 with Umbrella Man is a bit of a confusing one, this part especially, so I want to elaborate on my working theory.

When Charlotte mentions “the person I met in the TV world”, she is referring to the masked executioner she met in the maze (which, as we know from EP3, was Charles in a Vincent vessel). He possesses her body and kills the 3-eyed. That scene is the unimaginable sin she mentions to UM, the memories of which are fuzzy to her. He explains that he “edited her source code” which consisted of him messing with her memory of the event.

Though it’s hard to say which UM this is (Charles or Father), I’m inclined to think it is the second. He says those memories were unnecessary and removed them for the sake of her Education Program.

Charles went out of his way to remind her of her true identity (Scarlett from EP3) which as we know, was the root of her breakdown in EP2. We can assume this suppression was UM’s was of meddling with Charles’ goal, delaying her awareness and maintaining the “proper” story.

“I can’t tell her the truth, can I?” He says to himself- I’ll have to reread some of his dialogues for 2/3 because I forget some of his goals/reasoning...

There's such an insanity in this. The fact they are taking this so seriously and expect the audience too as well. Like, people don't fondly look as product placement as something positive in movies and tv.

GotG works because stuff like 80 music and aesthetic is something that can be liked even if one doesn't have personal nostalgic attachment to it. And it is music, aesthetic and pop culture that people do form attachment to and keep in their lives.

For most McDonald is not some warm nostalgic experience people think of. It's thought of as cheap, unhealthy and more often than not poor quality food. Like, Wanda finding comfort in watching sitcoms is a thing people do. Sylvie finding comfort in working for a fast food chain is a joke and them taking it so seriously just makes even more of a joke

Yeah, it is kind of weird. You think maybe it's an American thing? Maybe they feel some kind of attachment to McDonald's for some reason, but I doubt the rest of the world gives a damn. It's just one of a million other fast-food joints that I particularly never go to. If I go fast-food, I'm buying pizza, baby.

I wasn't watching the MCU back then but did they make such a huge fuss about Stark eating a burger back in IM 2? It's like they're trying to convince the audience that this has a deeper meaning or something. Wanna give it an emotional angle? Do it in the script! The fact that they're trying to sell this so much and so repeatedly kind of makes me think they didn't do a good enough job of it in the episode and they're trying to cover their asses or something.

Anyway, Sylvie is not human. She could find those families with kids at a park or coming out of school, the McDonald's thing was done for marketing purposes and that's it.

I gotta say though, this part in that article is bothering me:

"The season 2 trailer indicated that he (Loki) is having an issue with time slippage, and there would be no individual better at understanding the problem than a person who spent her entire life hiding in the timelines."

Sylvie knows nothing about that. She didn't even know magic didn't work at the TVA. She's not some expert about timelines and time shenanigans, she was only at the TVA for a few minutes as a kid. Loki said in ep2 he had been watching videos regarding those aspects of timelines, etc so if anything... he knows a lot more than she does. But S2 is going to be more of the same, I'm afraid. Loki being clueless and Sylvie showing how much more than him she knows.

PS. Isn't this show supposed to be about him? Yet all articles I've seen talk about her. Why don't they change the title of the series? Oh right, it may not sell as well...

its kind of funny that ppl are talking like Literally Everyone is Actually saying or implying they would rather have the ice king than simon that. seems like an exaggeration. the only people who say anything of the sort are astrid, who wasn’t even born yet while simon was still ice king and just thinks of him as “cool wizard” and “wrote some fun books”, and fionna & cake, who have seen approximately 10 seconds of ice king in a moment where he’s not doing particularly bad, and who have only interacted with simon at literally the lowest point of his entire life so far. what finn & tv say in ep2 reads as them hearing the conversation and assuming its more along the lines of “simon being embarrassed by work he thinks is bad” than “simon trying to avoid this thing because it is associated with a traumatic part of his life”. and prismo is just like. a little peeved that he can’t access or control his own creation anymore. Like, the Points people are generally trying to make when they bring this up are not without merit, and you could say that’s the message simon got from the last couple of days but. unless i forgot something there is absolutely 0 indication of any person who met ice king saying anything that remotely actually implies they enjoyed having ice king around more than simon. we just have a handful of people saying they happen to like One Thing ice king did. the people of ooo did not undergo a wave of selective amnesia about the ice king

PJO (TV) -- Luke (ep2~3)

That speech Luke made about glory was so impactful. It was such an important part of Luke's character. Sure, he was a good mentor and he cared about other demigods, but seeking glory (or rather, attention) was what motivated him, ultimately.

I think similar paragraph was also in the book, but I'm not sure if it was Luke who said it. Even if he did, it certainly wasn’t as pointed as the way it played out in the show. I supported their decision to emphasize this aspect of Luke wholeheartedly. It was easy to be overlooked in the book. At least when I thought of Luke, glory-seeking wasn’t the first thing that came to my mind. But when Luke said the word Glory in the show, I instantly thought, that was such a Luke thing! Of course, it could be more of a common value among demigods, but I think Luke took it more seriously than others.

Also, Luke looked so likeable and easy to approach here. I've read the book too many times and forgotten the feeling of liking and trusting him. But I could feel it when I watched the episode! He was such a caring big brother. I loved that little moment of him dragging Percy away from the fire. So lovely. I liked the height different between Percy and Luke too <3 I'm glad they cut down the Annabeth part in the camp to give Luke and Percy enough bonding time. It will definitely make the ending hit harder... I mean, Percy didn't choose Luke for the quest because he didn't want to be betrayed by him! (That's how I interpreted it anyway)

OFTS Ep2 - Stringed throughts

As last time, I already watch the episode yesterday. These are my thoughts on rewatch. I know it may be weird to process this way, but I want to actually watch this series and not focus on analysis first. It also allows me to connect elements better and perceive things I hadn't.

I thought mew was our narrator, but with more characters showing in the confessional, it's now obvious he isn't. Interesting way to borrow from reality tv format to get insight in characters thoughts. Also, it gets very noticeable that nick has not been shown in the confessional (yet), but every character introduced in the first bar scene of Ep1 has. Is nick set as an outsider of the main group?

ray starting to drink in daylight because mew's in a relationship now... ouch, my heart. I appreciate their friendship dynamic though, it's not fully honest, but there's true care

is Top the possessive kind? weird how this doesn't match with the dynamic he and mew have when it's just the two of them... maybe he just doesn't like to share (his toys)

Was wondering how Nick would end up crying in Sand's arms, now I know. I love how Sand looks like he hit the jackpot just because he won't have to move out

I liked that the public confession and the uneasiness it creates for the person on the receiving hand were mentioned.

boston definitely knows about ray's feelings for mew. will he try to use this to drive top away from mew? (this is me clowning, i'm just wondering as to how it'll play out)

back to the confessional: we opened the episode with perspectives on romantic relationships, and we're closing with perspectives on sex relationships

the closing credits have each character alone (mew in ep1, ray in ep2)... will we see characters in pairs later on?

I really like how each character handles relationships in different ways, how we get different views on romance, sex, and even friendship to some extent.

Will and Mike = Robin and Vickie... and Steve is the Byler shipper stand-in

Thinking back through some scenes in s4 and there are sooo many parallels to these two relationships, and Steve is there every step of the way, telling us that Byler is requited and all the tiny clues are not just a coincidence.

In ep1, we get a reminder of homophobia and heteronormativity. We see Robin crushing on Vickie and being concerned about asking out the wrong girl and becoming the town pariah. We see Will painting and El assuming it's for a girl he likes, and him rejecting his classmate flirtating with him. The scene with Robin and Vickie at the basketball game is paralleled and juxtaposed with the airport scene as well. Robin almost blurts out that she had a crush on a girl but stops herself when Vickie says "sorry?"

In ep2, we get that direct comparison with Mike's greeting putting Will off from showing him the painting, especially with his "cool." We then see Robin reflecting on her behavior with Vickie in a scene directly after the airport scene. We see Robin freaking out about how she word vomits around Vickie when she's nervous, but we see the opposite from Will. Will gets nervous about Mike's response and clams up. There's also a ton of emphasis from Robin about Vickie having a "real, genuine laugh, not fake at all," compared to Mike's stilted awkwardness and Argyle calling him out for his shirt being a shitty knockoff. This juxtaposition is more to show us that these are just different characters handling being queer in the 80s differently. They're not telling the exact same story with these couples. Similar enough for parallels, different enough for direct juxtaposition.

In episodes 8 and 9, of course we get the shot of Robin and Will standing between the couples they're in a love triangle with. Steve stares on sadly as Robin watches Vickie and her bf kiss, exactly like how I was staring with devastation at my tv throughout all of the sad Will scenes. Robin says that the stakes of her love life seem low in the face of the world ending, and in the next episode, we see Will encouraging Mike to share his feelings to El (putting his love life aside) in the face of her fighting Vecna, losing, and dying (the end of the world). I've seen this mentioned a couple times, but Mike in the van scene says that it seems silly to be worried about his relationship with everything going on, and Vickie says something almost identical about her ex-boyfriend in ep9.

We also see Vickie complaining about how her and her bf didn't have the same interests in ep9: he didn't like Fast Times! Robin, on the other hand, loves movies. Not a super direct parallel to anything in s4, but we've seen this with El and Mike. El has never shown interest in DnD, maybe foreshadowing Mike realizing that of course she had nothing to the with Will's painting. Mike wanted to goof around and sing while making out with El, but she didn't like that. Mike goofed around, asking if he looked good with the light blocking glasses, and El didn't joke back or tell him he looked good. Will, however, loves DnD, we see him singing in s4 in a similar to way that Mike sang in s3, and I'm 100% sure that Will would joke around and heap praise on Mike if Mike asked something like that of Will if they were dating.

In all of this, Steve is there hyping Robin up, reassuring Robin and the audience that her feelings are reciprocated! In this parallel, it only makes sense that the Duffer Brothers are signaling to the audience that if these two relationships are paralleled, with Vickie reciprocating, Mike reciprocates too. Steve encourages Robin to be herself with Vickie, and we see Mike giving Will heart eyes when Will comes close sharing his feelings in the van, "being himself." Steve brings up tiny clues that others might not think twice about, but that point to Vickie's queerness. Returning a movie at a certain time, when exactly her boyfriend returned to town, the timeline not adding up? Those sound like the kind of clues Byler shippers focus on all the time. We see Steve in ep8 reassuring Robin that even though Vickie has a bf, that doesn't mean requited feelings are out of the question. And of course we see Steve smiling at Vickie and Robin ending the season standing side by side, Vickie recently single with a hint of Vickie liking back. Exactly how Will and Mike end the seasonn standing side by side, after we see that Mike and El haven't talked much in 2 days and with Mike feeling protective towards Will again.

Steve is the Duffer Brother Byler shipper stand-in, telling us to not lose hope.
