Alice, Sweet Alice Review (7/07/23-7/08/23)
⚠️This review contains spoilers!⚠️
Now this is an incredible little-known horror film- an undeniable cult classic. Where do I even start? The acting was phenomenal, the mystery intriguing, the setting felt very real and lived in, and man oh man that reveal toward the end of the movie! What a twist.
The horribly demented landlord character of Mr. Alfonso made me physically recoil and I was glad he was only in the film for as much time as needed to get things across. (I was even more glad that it was decided to kill him off!) As much as I hate the character, I have to give props to Alphonso DeNoble for acting such a sick character so well. I was quite saddened to read his IMDB page and find that he only appeared in 3 low-budget horror films (including Alice, Sweet Alice) and reportedly took his own life after a report of him getting stuck in a turnstile due to his weight was placed in a newspaper.
I hated that they killed off Alice's father, he was the closest thing to a good adult in this movie.
Have I ever mentioned how much I love the look of films from the 70s? I always feel like their colours are so gorgeous and the graininess/visual noise is part of the charm.
The phone call scenes and the ending is very much giving Black Christmas, likely because they were made around the same time and both are precursors to what makes a Slasher today.
Also, did this movie have like 3 or 4 title changes? I watched an upload of it on Youtube and the title card read "Holy Terror," the title of the video itself was "THE MASK MURDERS (aka Alice, Sweet Alice)," and just now I also found out it was initially titled "Communion," which I assume really was just a placeholder title based on it's simplicity.*
Apparently a reboot was planned in 2012 but never came to fruition. I'm usually against reboots, especially horror reboots (if it isn't broke, don't fix it, and if you have nothing interesting to add, you best leave it be!), but I'd be curious to see what a retelling of this story could become, especially because anti-church rhetoric is even stronger today than it was back then, I feel.
9/10 | ✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️⬛
*Edit: I found my answer on IMDB, Communion was a shorter cut re-released in full as Alice, Sweet Alice after one of the actresses became well-known for another movie, then released again as another shorter cut titled Holy Terror in 1981 for a similar reason, which is the version I watched. Not sure where the title for the Youtube video came from, however, unless the uploader just put a generic, vaguely related title to dissuade copyright issues. Also, it gives me some comfort learning that Alice's actress was 19 at the time of filming, though it makes sense as they probably couldn't have gotten away with what they did if she had been an actual underage actor. It also explains why her acting was so good, particularly how her demeanour changes around Alfonso.

Twilight syndrome, it’s an incredibly intriquing series of games that stars young high schoolers as they investigate rumors of paranormal phenomenon as young people do in real life, and the rumors are often based on real life urban legends, and to make it really interesting, the cases that these young people investigate, often make them realise things about themselves, or involve themselves in some kind of way.
And they’re incredibly well told stories that unlike a lot of other horror games, really nail… tension.
These games can build up to a confrontation like it’s nobody’s business, to the point that there is rarely if ever, any actual supernatural happening appearing on screen, but you feel it. You’re right there with the people investigating, and as they get more and more tense, so do you, and that’s an incredible feat for games that are just glorified walking simulators.
these almost 30 year old pieces of media, do things with storytelling in games that modern games could learn a lot from, and just experiencing them is an event and an incredibly immersive one.
Unfortunately they’re in Japanese, they never really sold all that well to my knowledge, they’ve never received a fan translation, and the sort of creator of them, Suda51, is uninterested in localizing them or even releasing them on modern platforms for Japanese audiences, because according to him, they aren’t really his games as he was only brought into the project on the first one, well into development, and on the 1st of march we got the first half of the duology released.
So sit back and relax and let me explain the plot of Twilight Syndrome, Tansaku-Hen, aka search

Watched Serial Mom for the first time tonight! Holy shit I love this movie, Beverly Sutphin is such an underrated horror villain. Matthew Lillard as Chip and as always killing the 90s fashion... <3 And was that fucking Mrs. Puff’s voice actor playing Rosemary?! /posi
The writing is so funny and the character relationships are great, I couldn’t help but crack up every time Misty immediately fell for any attractive young guy that was introduced. Kathleen Turner’s voice, aaahhh 💞💞
I liked that Beverly doesn’t judge Chip for his interest in horror (because she herself has an interest in murder, of course) and even fosters it by letting him decorate his room, work at a VHS rental, and letting him just watch the movies at all.
BEV’S POOR HUSBAND THO 😭 /lh
It is also particularly admirable that, despite Serial Mom's commercial-ness, it still has a sheen of Waters' signature taste for filth /posi
