A loving rant about Christian Rock Hard:
Christian Rock Hard is by far my favourite South Park episode- When it comes to comedic perfection, this is subjectively as close as you can get for me- It has all the ingredients for an episode I would view as perfect-
Characters:
The main feature characters of this episode are the main four, as well as Token and Butters. However I’ll focus on Eric, Token and Butters as they are the main reason for this section of the rant.
When is comes to characters you wouldn’t really see together, I definitely think of this group, and in particular Token. My soft spot for Token will never diminish and his very realistic outlook on every situation he is in works really well in dichotomy with Butter’s quite innocent yet sometimes sadistic and Cartman’s sociopathic personalities. It creates a dynamic of chaotic, level headed, naivete which is perfect to depict the sheer absurdity yet groundedness of this episode when in comparison with other episodes. Ignoring our star, Eric, Token is in my opinion one of the most important characters, successfully acting as the everyman to juxtapose with the absurdity of the situation Cartman has put him and Butters in. Not only does this give a character for the audience to project their disbelief onto, but it also leads to comedic banter between him and the central character of this episode, Eric Cartman.
Speaking of the man of the hour, our pudgy little prince of pomposity once again succeeds in being a hilariously trashy human being on all different fronts. Everything that Cartman does in this episode feels very in order with the Cartman we know up until this point (unlike later fucking episodes *cough cough*). Despite him being quintessentially Cartman, I don’t find myself seeing him as the antagonist in the episode, something I find myself frequently doing in other episodes for obvious reasons. This episode doesn’t feel like it has a good and bad side, rather, it is just usual shenanigans between two equally interesting sides of two different conversations. This doesn’t paint anyone as evil and makes the episode feel far more laid back and allows you to just sink in the comedy and suspend your disbelief.
Butters inclusion is much more into the background of the episode, acting as the usual innocent 8 year old he has been often characterised as. He is mostly present in the episode as someone who has taken neither side to the debate on the morality of Faith + 1, unlike Eric and Token, who are both for and against the band respectively. This just makes the dynamic of the group flow better, as not one side is more outnumbered than the other, continuing to help prevent painting anyone in the majority of the episode as evil.
Humour:
As I mentioned earlier, I consider Token to be a very important factor in this episode. Particularly due to his straight and level headed approach or outlook being used in conflict with Cartman’s insane and outgoing nature. This conflict leads to some great lines- Such as the entire album cover sequence to one of my favourite sequences of the whole show-
My favourite part of this episode is the segment where we get to hear a preview of many of the songs Faith + 1 (Cartman’s fake christian rock band) have plagarised. The presentation of this, in those shitty CD commercials, coupled with the inspiring imagery of a fat kid singing about jesus in an overly sexual manner paired excellently with the fact that the audience knows this entire thing is ingenuine makes the whole thing seems so unreal in a way that is simply unparalleld.
I feel like the humour of this episode so successfully displays how religion can be easily used to manipulate people- This is done by having the audience see how insane and hyperbolic Cartman’s situation is by making it come off as absurd and hilarious, and still having people thinks it’s genuine because of Faith + 1′s so called “Christian Messages.” It calls out the insane nature of some of the things people who are taking advantage of religion have made people believe. It gets this message across as well as being hilarious-
