I don’t know what we have growing in our backyard this year - after years of dead and dying junk i quit mowing this past year and just let nature take its course. Whatever took over is beautiful, soft, full of flowers and nearly covers my entire 1/2 acre. Seeds of Thought: NYPA Unveils New Kiosk at St. Lawrence Showcasing Vegetation Management

Interactive kiosks and displays are coming to visitors centers at New York Power Authority (NYPA) facilities near you. These kiosks showcase some of the less obvious, but interesting work we do to achieve the goals of our Strategic Vision 2020. For example, thousands of annual visitors to the Hawkins Point Visitors Center at the NYPA’s St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project can now enjoy a new kiosk providing information on our integrated vegetation management (IVM) program. Rather than simply mowing all vegetation along our transmission rights-of-way (ROW), IVM promotes the growth of desirable low-height shrub and grass species to limit the growth of undesirable high-growing vegetation that can interfere with power lines and cause outages. This ultimately improves the reliability and resiliency of our transmission equipment while also supporting sustainability.

The kiosk is located next to the visitors center in a scenic pull-off on Hawkins Point Road, and was unveiled to the public on June 16. It sits adjacent to the massive transmission lines exiting the St. Lawrence Power Project — an ideal location to showcase the implementation of IVM along our ROW. The kiosk houses an interactive three-panel display highlighting NYPA’s IVM activities, pollinator protection and the fight to control invasive species.

Vegetation management became a focus following the Northeast blackout of 2003, which was caused by transmission lines coming into contact with foliage. We manage vegetation by applying IVM along 1,400 circuit‑miles of transmission lines and over 16,000 acres of maintained ROW, which equates to managing over a million potentially high-growing plants. As a result of these IVM efforts, NYPA is both an accredited Right-of-Way Steward Utility and a national leader in implementing environmental stewardship into ROW operations. By encouraging native plants, we are also supporting habitats for pollinators such as birds, bees and butterflies, which play a crucial role in helping plants grow and improving agricultural productivity across New York State.

Future locations for IVM displays are also in the works. Installation of a similar kiosk is planned on a walking and biking trail in Utica by the end of 2020, and our new visitors center that is under construction at the Utica Zoo will house an interactive curved wall where visitors can view and move detailed 360-degree photos taken along NYPA’s ROW. The Blenheim-Gilboa Visitors Center already hosts an IVM display, which was introduced in summer 2018. Ultimately, the goal is to introduce IVM kiosks and visitors center exhibits at each of NYPA’s project sites.

“Managing vegetation with vegetation simply works — implementing IVM along our rights‑of‑way leads to a more reliable electric system,” said Lewis Payne, manager of ROW/Environmental. “The idea behind these kiosks is to allow the public to see and understand our IVM program and all of the effort that goes into it. It’s about fulfilling our responsibility to the environment and the community, as well as our stakeholders and our customers.”
