Former home of railfan, photographer, and author, Lucius Beebe, the Amtrak certified luxurious private railcar, the Virginia City, is currently for sale (early 2024). Price comparable to a nice Bay Area home. If I don't win the Powerball this week, I hope that whoever purchases it keeps tagging the tail of Amtrak trains with it!

Serendipitously a few Sothern Pacific railfan videos have popped up on YT, featuring the Virginia City

I still love my period instrument recordings, but as of the past 6 months or so I've been leaning more heavily on modern ensembles playing in the "Historically Informed Performance" style like Berlin Barock Solisten and Combattimento Consort Amsterdam (or the period orchestras that stay tuned to 440 and play in a more "modern friendly" style like Venice Baroque Orchestra, L'Arte del Mondo, or Atalanta Fugiens, for example). Idk, something about it is just scratching an itch in my brain as of recent

A Self-Portrait by Rosalba Carriera. Italian, c. 1745. Pastel on paper. Royal Collection Trust (bought by George III from Joseph Smith).
Description from the RCT:
This is probably her final self-portrait, executed shortly before the onset of blindness in 1746; a contemporary engraving by Giuseppe Wagner after this portrait records in its inscription that the pastel was a gift from Carriera to Joseph Smith, Magnæ Britanniæ Cos. (Consul of Great Britain). On that evidence, it would have been executed after Smith's appointment as British Consul in Venice in 1744. Carriera's apparent age (which is well documented through a succession of self portraits) would also date the pastel to around this time. The theory that the pastel was made as a gift is supported by the lack of affectation in the portrait, which would imply a friendship between artist and recipient. Smith was one of Carriera's major patrons, owning thirty-eight of her works, of which five remain in the Royal Collection.
