I'm safe in Ontario OR after an extremely boring drive. Blue high sky but lower-level thick haze obscured the mountains on both sides of a broad plain. Their presence was intermittently hinted at by blue or darker gray silhouettes. The first 3 hours the road was relatively straight & relatively level. There was nothing to see but yellow grasslands & corn fields w/ chains of mobile irritators keeping them green. I began to feel hypnotized &, by golly, it was time for more Calvin Harris music to keep me alert.
I also saw farmers on huge tractors harvesting or plowing & stirring up huge clouds of pale clay dust. Everything that was green was irrigated. Otherwise, this territory is a dry dust bowl. Further evidence of that was seeing the black remains of grassfires along the highway, no doubt caused by people tossing out still burning cigarettes.
I am glad I kept my ashtray from the PT Cruiser. It has a snap-shut lid & fits in a cup holder. I need to remember to empty it/should do that after I post this update.
Eventually, the road rose above the haze to make a passage between close mountains & I got to see what they looked like. They were mainly grassy rounded hills on the left (south) but, on the right, there were intriguing flat-topped mountains crowned by dark boulders. Their flared skirts were covered w/ yellowed grass.
I wondered how those mountains happened. Were they originally much larger & their sloping sides created by the erosion that exposed the bedrock that seems to crown them? I dunno. <shrug>
But soon the road dived back down into the haze. Clouds from the West covered the sky & all was bleakly white above empty yellow grassland. I began to suspect the entire Mountain Time Zone is covered by haze. That's probably also true for Southern California.
I dunno about Oregon yet. I'll find out tomorrow when I pass over the mountainous Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. If the haze is on the other side, then, dammit, the entire Western US could be under this shroud of possibly toxic haze. And our media only says it could happen while it actually IS HAPPENING! DAMN!
I crossed the almost the entire width of southern Idaho & didn't hardly see anything.
I'm currently sitting at 2150' above sea level by tomorrow I'll be down to 1200' & won't be able to use altitude as an excuse for my body's dysfunctional condition.
Welp, I'm hungry now. Gonna hit Denny's, the nearest eatery.
