Prompt #254
Hero wrapped the emergency blanket around Villain's wet and trembling shoulders. "You know, when I let you escape into the woods, I didn't know you were going to get lost. Or that you sucked so bad that wilderness survival."
Villain managed a half-amused exhale through their clenched teeth. "And you know so much?"
"Actually, yes. My camp is about a mile over that ridge. You think you can make it that far?"
Villain fought their stiff legs into the standing position, stumbling a bit on the way up. "What, you can carry traumatized civilians, but can't spare a bit of muscle for your nemesis?"
Instead of quipping back, Hero suddenly scooped them into their arms. "I certainly can if you need me to."

Cocoon (Original selkie romance)
Tumblr media
Cocoon || Shipwrecked Sailor/Selkie || Explicit || 38k, In Progress
Trans Male Character, Shipwrecks, Wilderness Survival, Romance, Selkies, Cannibalism, Amputation, Blood and Injury, Huddling For Warmth, Ambiguous/Open Ending, Hopeful Ending, Mildly Dubious Consent, Fever, Abusive Parents, Fairy Tale Elements, Hurt/Comfort, Despair, Oral Sex, Frottage, Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, Animal Death (For the purposes of food)
William Caldwell is a man, and always has been. In order to escape his cruel, abusive father, and to live his life as he has always wished to, William signs up as a deckhand aboard the HMS Fearless, a ship bound for the antarctic circle. When the Fearless is sunk somewhere well south of Australia, in icy waters too frigid to navigate without a full crew, William is left stranded on a remote and deserted island with no food, no water, and no company. Except for the seal that might have saved him.
Here it is, the original story that I wrote in a fit of inspiration over like 3 weeks and then felt too self-conscious about to post right away! I have decided to post it now to get it out of my life whether it's good or bad! I hope some people enjoy it. <3
You can read it on AO3!

Another small fire with steel wool and flint & steel. Extremely viable option, was much quicker to flame than charcloth.

Watching Alone really drives home the low success rates of a single human hunter and makes you appreciate the value of food that can't run away.
It's also a really good example of how hunter gatherer subsistence works.
If you leave 10 humans in the environment with limited resources and no contact or rescue party, 9 of them will be dead in 90 days.all of them will be dead in a little over 100 days.
Even with 2 people, starvation tends to set in after a couple months.
And yeah, people from hunter gatherer cultures they'd probably be better at this than a bunch of Americans who do it as a side hustle, but there's only so much one person can do in one day. It's almost never enough.
It's too much for one human to collect enough berries to have vitamin c through the winter. It's too much for one human to hunt and process enough big game regularly to feed themselves. it's too much for one human to build an insulated home and then monitor their heat source to keep that home from catching fire.
It's too much to make and use sharp tools without injuring yourself, and it's too much to try and do all the work hurt if you do. It's too much to go out and find more food when your inability to find safe food made you sick.
On the other hand, if you put 10 people out in the environment together with limited resources and occasional contact with other small groups, you'd have a community that could last indefinitely.
For all that we glorify stories of the lone individual against the environment, it very much isn't how we evolved to survive.

Surprise, everybody! It's exactly what nobody was expecting today, a new chapter of my 3x13 wilderness survival training fix-it fic. Who's ready for more trees and rain?? 🌲🌧️🏕️ And also some bad guys and conspiracy theories...
The party of three men and one woman that abducts Mac has high-powered rifles and no idea how to survive in the wilderness. That becomes apparent in the first twenty minutes he’s with them. The one thing they do well is tie his hands, which leaves him little choice but to come along quietly. Well. He technically had the option of yelling, but two of the four kidnappers had weapons trained on his sleeping friends when they pulled him away from his bathroom break just before dawn. He’s got a better chance of getting himself out of this mess with his hands tied than they had of surviving a couple bullets in their sleep. His estimation of their survival skills goes down as soon as they rifle through his backpack and start guzzling the contents of his canteen. “You might want to ration that,” he says. “Clean water can be hard to come by out here.” “Where’s your food?” one of the men asks, pulling Mac’s deflated backpack open more, as if that will make a pile of rations appear. He's a big guy, and he looks like he'd hold his own in hand-to-hand better than he's going against nature. And, of course, there's the rifle slung over his shoulder. Mac holds in a smile. “Don’t have any. I was going to find it on my own. How long has it been since you guys ran out?” “Too long,” says the guy who swallowed down half of Mac’s remaining water. The man who seems to be in charge, who one of the others called Giovanni, ends up with Mac’s knife, which kills the idea that he might be able to get to it and cut the rope around his hands. He’s pretty sure he could make a break for it, but he’s less certain that he could get out of range before one of them shot him. Even if he did get away, it’s still possible that they’d be able to track him back to the campsite, putting the rest of the team in danger. No, he’s going to have to cooperate for now. “So, are you going to tell me what this is all about? Where do you need to go so badly you’re willing to kidnap a guide?” For a moment, it looks like the guy in charge doesn’t want to tell him, but he pulls out a paper map and unfolds it. “X marks the spot,” Giovanni says, tapping it with his gun. “What’s at the X?” Giovanni’s eyes narrow but then he shrugs. “You ever heard of D. B. Cooper?”
(Chapter 5 on AO3) or (Start at the Beginning)
Chapter 6 will be out soon.
@diekatimitdemhutohnehut asked for a tag after I posted the last chapter... back a while ago. Here it is... 🥲😬

Short Prompt #255
"You lost your powers?" Villain cried, throwing their hands into the air. "How? No, better yet, why? Why now when we're in the middle of the flipping frozen tundra?"
Hero stared out at the miles and miles of untouched snow only broken by the thin green stripe of a treeline in the distance. They tugged at the spot inside where their power usually resided, pooled in their chest like a well, but again came up with nothing. "I don't know, it's just been happening lately."
"How long until it unhappens?"
Hero shrugged, trying not to let on how equally panicked they were to be stranded. "An hour? A day? Last time it took three days."
"Great," Villain said, throwing their hands in the air and then immediately shoving them back in their armpits with a seething glare. "We can be popsicles."
"I'm sorry," Hero muttered. They'd never expected to say that to someone like Villain, but it was true. Endangering another person with their glitchy powers was the last thing they needed on their conscience.
Villain huffed out a violent breath cloud. "Save it. For now, let's just get to those trees. Hopefully, we can find something to make a shelter, or at least make a fire. Buy us some time for those powers of yours to recharge."

You know what I wish I saw more in post-apocalyptic movies/books? People actually living off the land. Not just fighting over food and resources. Because let’s face it: it’s not the people who live in the middle of cities that are going to survive, but the farmers, the hunters, the foragers. People who actually have skill where they can keep themselves alive with minimal contact with humans.
I want to see people using animal pelts for blankets and clothes, I want to see people making their own moccasins and gloves, and making jerky for the winter
I want to see people healing infected wounds with a plantain weed poultice, eating the inner bark out of pine trees, and curing their colds with yarrow.
Native Americans were surviving fine for thousands of years living off the land in that manner. I know people who could disappear into the woods and never be seen again, yet live perfectly good lives roughing it.

Chapter 3! Please check the author's note at the beginning regarding this chapter, because now the tags for "amputation" and "blood and injury" are coming into play!
You can read it on AO3!
As always, thank you for reading, and if you are enjoying my writing think about reblogging this! Original fiction doesn't get nearly as much traction as fanfic does, even though it's every bit as free!

Using a carbon steel knife as the striker for flint and steel:
Tumblr media
The supplies for this exercise, the knife is 1095 steel
Tumblr media
Make downward strokes, you strike the flint against the spine at a 45 degree or less angle. If you keep a lanyard loop on your knife, i suggest placing your thumb through it to prevent the knife from slipping out of your grip.
Tumblr media
The money shot
Tumblr media
Ready to be placed into the tinder bundle
Tumblr media
Make sure your tinder has good contact with the ember
Tumblr media
Slowly and steadily blow air into the tinder bundle. It's not about how fast or hard you can blow into the tinder bundle, its about how steadily you can keep the flow of oxygen to the ember.
Tumblr media
Success!
Tumblr media
Not every knife will make sparks with flint. Even some carbon steels won't produce a spark. Using this method does leaves marks on the spine of your knife.
