Making Stuff and Doing Things DIY Guides
Tumblr media
Very excited to finally be adding this book to my collection. Its filled with DIY guides submitted by punks/alt people/DIY-ers and from old zines as well. There are SO many topics covered in this book from DIY pins and patches, stamp and zine making, and guitar basics, to pet care, outdoor survival, and even a section on sex ed. Truly an amazing book, I’m glad to finally own it!

My Guide to Patch/Crust DIY Pants That No One Asked For:
(If you see this guide go through changes, you’re not crazy, I update it all the time)
I’ve noticed that my DIY pants had been noticed on here, so I’d thought I make a guide for new punks getting into the scene 💖
I’ve been in the punk scene for a little over two years now, so don’t take everything I say to heart, I’ve got lots to learn.
Typically, you want to start out with a good base. For instance, the pants you choose can make or break your project. I don’t suggest buying super expensive pants, but don’t buy them super low quality either. You want something that lasts, as crust or patch pants are meant to be your only pair.
EDIT: Before I start any new project, I look around my stuff to see if I can repurpose anything. Old T shirts, bed sheets, bags, you name it. It’s so much easier to repurpose your stuff before buying new things, and you save money doing it. Before you buy pants, see if you can find a pair you already own! I had to buy new ones because I only had one other pair of jeans that I wear to work.
I’ve seen some tutorials floating around for DIY can spikes. Please be very careful doing this. If you’re moshing in a vest made with cut up aluminum, you can seriously hurt someone if you’re not careful. Be on the safe side and either borrow/buy pre made studs and spikes or save the DIY can spikes for non-moshing vests/pants/cuffs.
If you’re moshing with any studs or spikes at ALL, they should be blunt!!!
Good places to buy pants
Thrift (it’s a bit of a crapshoot if you have a hard time finding sizes, but if they’ve lasted long enough to end up in a thrift store, then it means they’re more likely good quality. Check the tags!!)
Edited above, been informed of how Goodwill treats disabled employees
ASOS (I recommend if you have a hard time finding your size. I can’t guarantee the sustainability of this site though.)
Mercari (Like an online goodwill. I find a lot of awesome clothes on here. You can download the app.)
Depop (I seldom shop on here, but similar to Mercari with a wider range of brands.)
How the Pants Should Fit
The fit of your pants can also affect how they lay on you. I suggest buying pants slightly larger on you, if you’re covering them in patches. When you start sewing, you’re going to find that they’re going to shrink a little bit. So please avoid tight fitting jeans if you can! Straight or relaxed fit are the best.
EDIT: If skinny/fitting pants are all you got, sometimes making relief cuts at the knees help when you try to bend down.
Patches
Patches are going to be what makes your pants unique! There’s quite a few you can choose from: plain patches, band patches, politics patches, etcetera. If you’re going to cover the entirety of your pants, I suggest going to Joann’s or Michaels (fuck Hobby Lobby) for fabric. Buy a yard or two canvas or pleather (or both). Otherwise, I usually cut up old T-shirts for my fabric.
How to Make Your Own Patches
Stencil (very straightforward, here’s a guide) (please check out Anarchostensilism on insta/Tiktok/Deviantart)
Paint (Buy white/black stencil fabric paint. I don’t suggest acrylic, since it’s not made to move with fabric)
Where to Buy Pre Printed Patches
crustpunks.com (Hella good, fast shipping, affordable!! Made by punks for punks)
nuclearwasteunderground.com (I found this one randomly)
Etsy (While I hate them for the way they treat their sellers, unfortunately this can be a main source of income for some.)
Shows, punk meets, friends
If you’re going to make crust pants, it’s imperative that you have crust bands on your patches, that’s what makes them crust! (Apart from never washing them)
Edit: I would do your own research on the crust punk subculture, there’s a lot of discourse out there on what makes punks crust punks and so on.
Washing your pants is not a black and white rule, but you can ruin the integrity of your work if you carelessly throw them in the washer. Like if you were to throw a suede jacket into the washer, there’s certain steps to take!
Here’s an enlightening guide on crust.
Here’s some crust band recs!
Nausea
Anti Cimex
Dystopia (my favorite)
disrupt
Doom
Heresy
Discharge
Amebix
Things to Add to Your Pants
Buttons (you can buy or make your own. Here’s a guide for DIY bottle cap buttons)
Pockets (easy to monkey wrench with a few spare patches, but here’s a pattern)
Handkerchiefs (the hankey code, much like the lace code, is pretty much dead. But it’s up to you if you want to signal something with it.)
Wallet chains (here’s a cool guide to making your own!)
Bum flap (by far the coolest thing on this list. Makes your ass not hurt when you sit on the sidewalk. Here’s a video)
Make them convertible (I made mine into zip off shorts. Here’s a video)
I made this up, but I added removable knee pads to mine.
Pant Inspiration
Have no shame in taking reference! Here’s are some cool accounts with awesome pants!

DIY- Plastic Cap Pins 📌
Tumblr media
I've seen Soooo many guides on using bottle caps as pins but honestly? I can't even remember the last time I saw a bottle with a metal cap on it in my house. And so I attempted to hunt down a DIY for a plastic lid version and they... don't seem to exist so here go!
Tumblr media
What you'll need:
Design!
Plastic caps (any size really)
Safety pin
Paint + brushes
Lighter (optional)
Sandpaper (mostly optional, depends on paints/cap combo)
Tumblr media
Once all assembled, it's pretty easy
Now depending on the pin it's surprisingly easy to just pierce the edge of the cap with a sharp safety pin and it'll go threw, however if your having a hard time or are worried about it then heating up the tip of the pin will help it go through fairly easily.
You can either let it stick out the top and hang it like a metal or you can push it in once it's closed and have it be a regular styled pin
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you want to sand down the cap to get a better surface to paint this is the time!
Now paint away!! I'd recommend doing either a white or black background and a few layers to boot just to ensure a good background. I of course did yellow so I did 3 layers to cover everything
Tumblr media
Let dry between layers or you'll end up with a marbled mess like mine. I'm not v patient
Look up or sketch out the design a few times while your waiting! Or drink a fave drink or enjoy something. Remember comfort and joy is the enemy of Capitalism and thus our best friends
Tumblr media
And bam!!! A pin!
Tumblr media
Go forth my sprouts and flourish with your new gear!! 💕💕🌱🌱

I'm kickstarting the audiobook for "The Internet Con: How To Seize the Means of Computation," a Big Tech disassembly manual to disenshittify the web and make a new, good internet that picks up where the old, good internet left off. It's a DRM-free book, which means Audible won't carry it, so this crowdfunder is essential. Back now to get the audio, Verso hardcover and ebook:

Tumblr media
Every trip to Defcon – the massive annual hacker-con in Las Vegas – is a delight. Partly it's the familiar – seeing old friends, getting updates on hacks of years gone by. But mostly, it's the surprises, the things you never anticipated. Defcon never fails to surprise.
I got back from Vegas yesterday and I've just unpacking my suitcase, and with it, the tangible evidence of Defcon's cave of wonders. My gear bag has a new essential: Hak5's malicious cable detector, a little USB gizmo that lights up if it detects surreptitious malicious activity, even as it interdicts those nasty payloads:
https://shop.hak5.org/collections/omg-row2/products/malicious-cable-detector-by-o-mg
(In case you're wondering if it's really possible to craft a malicious USB cable that injects badware into your computer and is visually indistinguishable from a regular cable, the answer is a resounding yes, and of course, Hak5 sells those cables, with a variety of USB tips:)
https://shop.hak5.org/collections/omg-row2/products/omg-cable
But merch is only a sideshow. The real action is in the conference rooms, where hackers update you on the pursuit of their obsessions. These are such beautiful weirdos who pursue knowledge to ridiculous extremes, untangling gnarly hairballs just to follow a thread to its origin point.
For the second year in a row, I caught a presentation from Joseph Gabay about his work on warshopping: slicing up shopping cart wheels and haunting shopping mall parking lots during resurfacing to figure out how the anti-theft mechanism that stops your cart from leaving the parking lot works:
https://www.begaydocrime.com/
And of course, I got to give one of those presentations, "An Audacious Plan to Halt the Internet's Enshittification," to a packed house. What a thrill! It was livestreamed, and if you missed it, you'll be able to catch it on Defcon's Youtube page as soon as they upload it (they've got a lot of uploading to do!):
https://www.youtube.com/@DEFCONConference/videos
Tumblr media
After my talk, I went back to the No Starch Press booth for a book signing – which was amazing, so many beautiful hackers, plus I got to share a signing table with Micah Lee. As I was leaving, Bill Pollock slipped me a giant hardcover art-book, and said, "You're gonna love this."
Tumblr media
I did. The book is Open Circuits: The Inner Beauty of Electronic Components, by Windell Oskay and Eric Schlaepfer, and it is a drop-dead gorgeous collection of photos of electronic components, painstakingly cross-sectioned and polished:
Tumblr media
The photos illustrate layperson-friendly explanations of what each component does, how it is constructed, and why. Perhaps you've pondered a circuit board and wondered about the colorful, candy-shaped components soldered to it. It's natural to assume that these are indivisible, abstract functional units, a thing that is best understood as a reliable and deterministic brick that can be used to construct a specific kind of wall.
Tumblr media
But peering inside these sealed packages reveals another world, a miniature land where things get simpler – and more complex. Inside these blobs of resin are snips of wire, plugs of wax, simple screws, fine sheets of metal in stacks, wafers of plain ceramic, springs and screws.
Tumblr media
Truly, quantity has a quality all its own. Miniaturize these assemblies and produce them at unimaginable scale and the simple, legible components turn into mystical black boxes that only the most dedicated study can reveal. Like every magician's trick, the unfathomable effect is built up through the precise repetition of something very simple.
Tumblr media
A prolonged study of Open Circuits reveals something important about the hacker aesthetic, a collection of graphic design, fashion and industrial design conventions that begins with this realization: that the crisp lines of digital logic can be decomposed into blobby, probabilistic lumps of metal, plastic, and even wax.
Tumblr media
It reminds me of George Dyson's brilliant memoir/history of computing, Turing's Cathedral, where he describes how he and the other children of the scientists building the first digital computers at the Princeton Institute spent their summers in the basement, hand-winding cores for the early colossi their parents were building on the floors above them:
https://memex.craphound.com/2012/03/12/george-dysons-history-of-the-computer-turings-cathedral/
You can see my hacker aesthetic photos in my Defcon 31 photo set:
https://www.flickr.com/search/?sort=date-taken-desc&safe_search=1&tags=defcon31&user_id=37996580417%40N01&view_all=1
In this video, Eric Schlaepfer illustrates the painstaking work that went into decomposing these tiny, precise components into their messy, analog subcomponents. It's pure hacker aesthetic, and it's mesmerizing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byKyJ0b04Lo
But Open Circuits isn't just an aesthetic journey, it's a technical one. After all, Oskay is co-founder of Evil Mad Scientist Labs, one of the defining places where hardware hackers gather to tear down, pick apart, mod, improve and destroy electronics. The accompanying text is a masterclass in the simple machines that combine together to make complex assemblies:
https://www.evilmadscientist.com/
Defcon is a reminder that the world only seems hermetically sealed and legible to authorized parties with clearance to crack open the box. From shopping cart wheels to thermal fuses, that illegibility is only a few millimeters thick. Sand away the glossy outer layer and you will find yourself in a weird land of wax-blobs, rough approximations, expedient choices and endless opportunities for delight and terror, mischief and care.
Tumblr media
Back my anti-enshittification Kickstarter here!

Supersonic Art’s: "Gifts Artists will Actually Love!" (Holidays '22 Gift Guide!)
Tumblr media
Here’s a little list of gifts artists will actually love.
The list isn’t comprehensive by any means - in fact it’s quite brief considering how long it could be - but these are a few personal favorites which I think are important and was led to by talking to other artists, learning what their favorite art supplies and tools are, and many years of trial and error on my own.
So take a look below and hopefully find something for that hard to shop for artist or artists in your life (Or something for yourself):
(Some of these links below are monetized and I receive a small percentage of the sale if you decide to purchase something.)
Tumblr media
Sketchbooks & Journals:
Maruman MNEMOSYNE Notebook - My personal favorite journaling notebook.  This larged-sized notebook has incredibly smooth paper and is just an extremely nice notebook to record anything.  It’s the best one I’ve come across and I journal in mine daily.
Moleskine Large Size Sketchbook - An unequaled sketchbook that has been hard to come by for the last few years.  Smooth paper that is thick enough and sturdy enough for a wide variety of media, but the truly special distinction of Moleskine’s sketchbooks are how wonderfully the paper accepts graphite.  The sturdy construction means you’re able to draw anywhere.
(Pro-tip: If you paint in your sketchbooks, use heavy duty binder clips to close the sketchbook.  It will keep the pages pretty flat!  But be careful not to smudge undried acrylic or oil paints.)
Pencils
Mitsubishi Hi-Uni Pencil Set - The Bugattis of pencils.  These are better than any others.  I use them personally and have never come across a better set of pencils.
Tumblr media
Mechanical Pencils
Staedtler 925 95 - At nearly $300, the Staedtler 925 95 is the Holy Grail of mechanical pencils.  It is the best mechanical pencil ever made and was discontinued because it was too well made (Seriously).  You can only find them on eBay these days, but if you have the money and want something truly special, these are worth it.
(Please note - This mechanical pencil is so sought after that there are often imitations being sold.  Currently there is only one available on eBay.  They show up from time to time.  Also please note that this is the “925 95.”  There are also 35s and 25s; which are somewhat good.)
Platinum Pro-Use 171 Matte Black - An acceptable (and affordable) replacement for the Staedtler 925 95.  Extremely well made and a well-weighted mechanical pencil.  It also has a tip protector - which the 925 95 lacks.
Tumblr media
Paper
Fabriano Artistico Extra White Watercolor Paper 22” x 30” 140 lb or 300 lb Hot Press - Professional paper for a multitude of mediums.  By far the best paper I’ve ever come across.
(“What are you talking about?  Arches paper is the best!” – Look, Arches paper is great and I’ve used it plenty of times before, but the moment I started using Fabriano - I never looked back.  It is the far superior paper in my opinion.)
Canvas & Stretcher Bars
Artel - I suggest cotton canvas from Artel - An affordable company based out of Belgium that makes truly excellent canvases.  Their metal stretcher bars are by far the best stretcher bars I’ve ever had the pleasure of using.
Wood Panels
If you use them or know an artist who needs some, wood panels should be custom built and there’s no one better out there at making them than Craig Hejka at Hejka Studios based in Detroit, Michigan.  Craig’s craftsmanship and knowledge is unmatched and exceptional.  Seriously: The.  Best.  You’ll need to contact him directly about having them made, but he has a nice contact form on his website.
Acrylic Paints
Golden Heavy Body Artist Acrylic Paints - These are the best acrylic paints out there.  I’m not sure why you would use any other brand other than price.  They offer acrylic sets and up to multiple gallons of specific colors.  Have fun!
Tumblr media
Oil Paints
Well, this one is a hard one.  There is such a wide range in discrepancies of color and quality between brands and within brands that it’s hard to narrow it down to just a few items or a set of oil paints.
That being said, every artist who uses oil paints probably needs more white paint for mixing colors.  Here are a few of my favorite titanium whites:
Holbein Titanium White - If you’re unable to locate a lead based white from the olden days, this is a pretty good match.  (Don’t actually seek out a lead based paint please - They were really amazing, though and this is just sorta an artist joke).  This is a fantastic titanium white.
Grumbacher Titanium White - A more than suitable white for oil painting.  Probably the best?  I don’t know.  I use this one and Holbein’s.
Winsor & Newton Titanium White - Another, more than suitable, titanium white.
Please note if buying for someone else: ARTISTS ARE INCREDIBLY PICKY ABOUT THEIR PAINTS.  Please ask your artist what brand they prefer before buying them any paint.
Paint Brushes
Qualita Golden Taklon Brushes - You won't believe it, but these brushes by Qualita are spectacular! Not only that, but they won't bust the bank.
Tumblr media
Painting Accessories
Silicoil Brush Cleaning Tank - Every artist needs a few!
Richeson Nesting Porcelain Palette Sets - Great for paint mediums .
Stainless Steel Brush Stand - I use this for holding brushes (Wash your brushes by hand).
Tumblr media
Easels
Note: I am lucky enough to have built my own easel to my own specifications.  These easels have not been tested by me.
The Santa Fe II - This looks to be a fantastic professional easel.
Richeson Italian Field Easel - I hear this is a truly excellent field easel.
Blick Heavy Duty H-Frame Easel - This looks like an excellent beginner’s easel with everything you might need; plus it seems professional and that is great motivation to work more.
Tumblr media
Books
The War of Art - A phenomenal book that can help you understand why art is so difficult and why it must be, at all costs, pursued.
David & Goliath - Sometimes what we think are obstacles are actually extremely valuable tools for overcoming adversity.  A fascinating read.
I Will Teach You To Be Rich - Being an artist is incredibly expensive.  Learn about finances and set things up so that you can continue making art for a very long time.
Barbarian Days - Sometimes you just gotta go surfing.
Tumblr media
Ephemera
Retractable Utility Knife - I have at least 5 of these and still don’t have enough.  I prefer Milwaukees, but as of writing this Amazon is out of stock.
Wooden Drawer Storage Box - Invaluable and stackable!
Dewalt Cordless Circular Saw - If I didn’t have a circular saw, there would be endless times I wished I had one.  A truly excellent gift for any artist - seriously.
Empire Framing Square - A remarkably valuable studio tool.  Will be used countless times and will last forever.

So, How to Build an Astrolabe: Overview
Tumblr media
Let’s gooooooooo! 🎉 🔭
Part One is live! Long time coming, but it is finally out. Biggest project I’ve undertaken for the History Survival Guide so far but learned a lot and I am excited to finally get a chance to share this
This is a step-by-step guide to the complete construction of an astrolabe that I think might exist. At least, in any accessible form
This work is a synthesis of dozens of papers/books, one or two out-of-print books, a book entirely in French that I had to translate each section as I read, a few emails to authors, and one long Twitter conversation with a museum curator
My goal is for this to be as accessible as possible for any kind of reader, so if there are any questions, feel free to reach out
🚀 Enjoy! Stay safe and keep learning, fellow chrononauts 🚀

Let's talk about one of my upcoming DIY's! If you love plants but say "oh but I don't have a balcony/lots of light/a yard" this is for you.
The most important thing to note about this entire project is that you need to be intentional about what you're buying and doing. So ask yourself a couple questions:
What kind of plants am I going to grow? How big are they?
Do I need to automate things or will I be able to do everything on my own?
This helps you determine how big of a glass cabinet/greenhouse you need and if you're going to be using smart plugs or not.
Now you can absolutely just buy a damn greenhouse online and put it inside. Don't let no one tell you that you can't. But if you're a DIY hottie and like to do things yourself and learn, you could benefit from doing this yourself.
You'll need some tools, for assembly. Probably a circular hole saw to cut a hole in the bottom of your cabinet, some magnets or something to keep the lights up and basic skills. Also a bowl of water to help humidity can be put at the bottom.
"What kind of plants can I grow?" Basically anything that can fit. Plants that need heat and lots of sunlight should be placed towards the top, plants that are okay with a tiny bit less heat and sun should be at the bottom.
"I don't know what to grow!" Cool, Here's some ideas:
Basil
Parsley
Tomatoes
Green onions
Lettuce
Peppers
Lavender
Rosemary
Chamomile
Dandelion
Garlic
Carrots
Marigold
Generally the more space, the better. So if you can get a really tall cabinet and just use a big step stool to reach the plants, do it! You can also buy acrylic shelves to place inside to promote airflow.
Plants can get big, don't be afraid to cut them down a little if your greenhouse becomes more of a jungle than you're okay with.
You can automate this whole thing (save for the watering, kind of) using smart plugs to turn off the fan and lights. For watering, you can buy self watering plant spikes for some of them (unless you want to water them, then that's fine)!
You'll want fertilizer (you can DIY it, or you can buy something like fish fertilizer), soil, and some pots of some sort.
Groceries have been god awfully expensive and this can help save money over time. Less trips to the grocery store and most importantly- you're not riding on someone else to make the prices for you. You pay for the electricity to run it, the water, the materials, and seeds. That's all you need.

good luck and remember: DIY with caution and care!
