Hi!!!! May I please request the J squad (Gotham) separately with a reader who works at the police office and is kinda like their inside mole? Like they let them know plans to catch them and are also always willing to help them escape and stuff? THANK YOU ❤️
A/N: All jobs are associated with the GCPD. Slite nsfw on Jerome's end.
Gotham!Jerome Valeska
Tumblr media
Job: Police Officer
Oh you little tattletale.
He’s not too surprised by your efforts in trying to keep him from getting caught.
Hell practically half if not most of his followers are or used to be coppers before joining him.
You’re no exception.
Expect to get anonymous calls from him talking and asking about anything other than any more information on Gordon being on his tail or big plans the precinct has been working toward.
For example, one day he called you while on shift to just say, “When are ya gettin’ off cop doody?”.
He has a printed and digital copy of your work schedule.
As we see in Season 4,he has complete control over Arkhams guards and prisoners, even saying that he wants to make a show of his escape, further displaying the extent of his 'showman complex'.
For the sake of the prompt, if he had any minor inconveniences with his little escape he wouldn’t turn down you assisting him in his plans.
Though do keep in mind his showman complex and that unless you want to be discovered as a traitor, you’ll need to discuss with him a plan where you won’t be seen as an accomplice.
He’ll leave little gifts for you on your desk mostly to show his appreciation for all that you’ve done for him.
How he gets them there, you’re not too sure.
If you don't care for his gifts, he'll offer other ways to show his appreciation. (I'm winking under the eyepatch)
Gotham!Jervis Tetch
Tumblr media
Job: Doctor
“Twinkle, twinkle, pretty doctor, how I long to unlock her. In this asylum, you shine with smite, but in my heart, you are my light.” (Yes, this is similar to him and Lee’s interaction.)
When he got sent to Arkham, there wasn’t much he was looking forward to.
Except getting back out on Gotham streets and getting revenge on James Gordon.
But when he meets you? Now there’s something to look forward to.
Once he realizes you’re on his side and help him escape the first time, expect to hear from him often.
Quite often in fact.
When he gets sent to Arkham a second time, doctor visits and check ups are a lot more fun now.
It’s like two kids in kindergarten, passing secret notes to one another while the teacher isn’t looking.
Some being about a plan for his escape while others are all laughs and giggles.
He is a gentleman when it comes to showing his gratitude for your assistance.
That is if he likes you of course.
Gotham!Jonathan Crane
Tumblr media
Job: Forensic science technician
When you first met, Jonathan didn’t trust you.
In fact he hated you.
Anyone associated with the GCPD and Jim Gordon, he hated.
He blamed you all for the death of his father.
It took a bit of time and patience for him to fully trust you.
Even when you started becoming a full time mole for him, he still kept you at an arms length.
No matter how often you’d update him on the GCPD and their plans, or Jim Gordon’s whereabouts, he’d just give a vague form of acknowledgment or confirmation in your words.
The only reason he started to put his whole trust in you was when you started showing interest in his experiments.
Especially his toxin.
He starts enjoying your company more when you start helping him perfect his toxin.
You both find out it comes in handy that you’re able to get information on your former colleagues' fears without any suspicion.
He’s able to find weak points in practically every police officer in the precinct.
He starts showing his gratitude for your help later on.
Though he does tend to act vague about it.

Brazil and The Dream of Escape
Tumblr media
I was delighted to find in the Xtras that the machine created to be used by Furfur to use to find out how many demons Shax could requisition for storming the bookshop was inspired by the movie Brazil. This is another nod to Monty Python member Terry Gilliam, who directed this film, and who almost directed the failed GO film in the 1990's.
I love this film. Always have. Yes, I was around when it came out in 1985. I'm that old. It's always been in my top 5 favourite films. And its totally relevant to Good Omens.
Tumblr media
Brazil can be described as a dark dystopian story based on the novel 1984. It doesn't have a happy ending, but its funny, horrific, ludicrous, romantic and timelessly beautiful all at the same time. Its so iconic that when ever I see its influence in other productions its been unmistakable.
It stars Jonathan Pryce long before he was a James Bond villain or the head Sparrow in Game of Thrones, a comedic turn from Robert de Niro and a handful of other famous faces that you are bound to recognise, such Bob Hoskins, Ian Holm and Jim Broadbent.
Pryce, as Sam Lowry, lives in a world that is strictly controlled with paperwork that comes in multiple copies, where people are routinely arrested and tortured and a long running unexplained terrorist campaign sees bombs explode in the most random of places. Sam has dreams of a beautiful woman floating in the sky, and he is a sliver-armoured winged hero trying to rescue her. He eventually finds that she is real, and finds out her name through various means via his work and contacts. He tracks her down, but that is where it all starts to unravel as she is mixed up with an unfortunate case of mistaken identity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Its easy to see the common themes and elements that run through the film with GO: the desire to run away and escape (that doesn't work,) a totalitarian authority controlling the masses, propaganda, piles of paperwork, an undercurrent of rebellion, torture and abuse, forbidden love between classes, a villain hidden in plain sight.
There is an art deco aesthetic to the film that also carries over to other films and shows it has influenced, and the busy work floor scene that stops on a dime to watch the tv show de jour while the boss isn't looking is one of the highlights of the film.
It was a reference of this that caught my eye in the Cohen Brothers modern fairy tale The Hudsucker Proxy, where they copied the busyness of the work floor for their mail room scenes, but also the art deco aesthetic. That's another film that is always in my top five films, and could go a round of comparisons with GO - its got time stoppage, an angel appearance and a near-godlike manipulator.
Tumblr media
It also appears, surprisingly, in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The casino at Canto Bight is Brazil inspired, in the way its introduced to us, its decor and the music. I know some people hate this film because of what they did to Luke, but I love it, the whole thing is just utterly gorgeous to look at.
Tumblr media
And if you've watched any of Loki recently, since S2 of that show finished not long ago, you would also seen some influence from Brazil in the retro look.
I love the classic art deco style. my grandparents had an art deco house that I spent many of my childhood hours in. The style itself is a clean, unadorned look, and often is meant to give a look of movement, speed or strength. A classic example of this is the Bentley, of course, which comes from the height of the art deco era in the 1930's.
Tumblr media
Hell is the other place we see the Brazil influence in GO, where is looks like it's constantly several decades behind the times, with overhead projectors and manual typewriters and odd looking not-quite steampunk contraptions.
Tumblr media
Brazil is available to stream on Disney at the moment, if you'd like to take a look. I highly recommend it, its one of those influential films that once you know it, you see its long reach in the most unexpected places.

Headcanons for being Jim Hopper’s child (Part 1)
Jim Hopper x child!reader
warnings: guns, knives, death, blood, cigarettes, alcohol and so on
a/n: might have 2 do another part bc it got so long lol. we’ll see how long that takes me
prompt: anonymous: “Could I request being Jim Hoppers teenage daughter headcanons please, like reader is as old as Steve, Nancy, Jonathan ect”
part 2 (tba)
Tumblr media
you spent most of your childhood in new york
but after things fell apart, after your sister passed, you decided to move back to hawkins with your dad when you were in middle school
which was very different than what you were used to.
starting with the fact that everyone knew your dad
and all eyes were on you to be a model citizen, you felt a lot of pressure to be the best you could be
most adults knew of the tragedy that struck your family, too. sooner or later, so would the kids
“so your sister had cancer? and she died?” -classmate
“…yes” -you
“that sucks” -classmate
you were definitely a rebel.
some blamed your “acting out” on the divorce, or the move, or losing sarah, but anyone who knew anything knew you were just jim hopper’s kid
“they’re trouble, just like their father” -anyone who knew jim as a teen
you were quite intimidating
you also inadvertently became popular in high school
“well, they’re dad is the chief of police, that means if we get into any trouble we’re golden!” -tommy h
“tommy, i hate you” -you
“yeah right! im your favorite person in the whole wide world” -tommy
“no, tommy, i mean it. if we get into any trouble im throwing you under the bus” -you
your dad taught you how to shoot a gun and defend yourself
and he’d take you camping in the woods in the summer
“how’s it going, kid? having fun?” -hopper
“you gave me a knife, of course im having fun” -you, carving up a chunk of wood
“that’s right, kid. proud of you” -hopper
he worried about you sometimes, looking back on everything he got away with as a kid
but he let go a bit just to let you live a little
you stole his cigarettes plenty of times
and his alcohol if he didn’t get to it first
he did hate your friends, though
“what’s up with you and all these preppy kids, y/n? really? aren’t they kind of assholes?” -hopper
“huge assholes. absolutely terrible. but they wont leave me alone, think im this super cool badass because im your kid, think i get away with everything” -you
“oh, so when i pull over one of these kids for drinking and driving while being underage, they think you’ll get them out of it?” -hopper
“that is correct” -you
“do they realize i’m probably gonna punish them harder?” -hopper
“no, but im counting on you to” -you
honestly you do share beers with him from time to time
not enough to get you drunk but enough to bond
hearing stories of his time at hawkins high
“then, and then—” -hopper, snorting laughter “me and joyce. you know joyce’s boy. jonathan byers’ mom. yeah, me and her were close back then! we revved up my car so hard that the principal ran outside to see what all the noise was and we ended up kicking back so much dirt…oh, man, there was so much dirt all over him and his stupid suit and his stupid glasses. he didn’t even go home, he stayed like that all day. me and joyce got detention for like, three weeks straight. ohhh, good times” -hopper
going out late to steve’s house nearly every weekend
and really showing off your teenage rebellion in his pool if you know what i mean
all in good fun
going to the station to help out when you could
flo thought you were an angel, callahan and powell always laughed at the remark
“y/n, how in the world did you convince that woman that you’re a saint?” -powell
“who says im not?” -you
“how many times have we had to give you a ride home after finding you stumbling down the street in the middle of the night? which of us is keeping score of that again?” -callahan
“that would be you, my friend” -powell
“hey, as long as i help her with paperwork and cleaning, i’m just the most selfless person on the face of the earth” -you
sooner or later that week that turned your life upside down came to be
when will byers went missing
you weren’t too worried until you found out what you were up against
but you weren’t much of a believer at first
but you were still highly sympathetic of jonathan’s situation to a certain extent
“hey, jonathan? i feel really shitty about everything you’re dealing with right now, man. i cant do much to help, but i’m here for you” -you
“uh, yeah, thanks. thank you, y/n” -jonathan
your friends didn’t bother making fun of you, they knew you’d tear them a new one over something like this
and you got a bit quiet as all of this went down
still went out with your friends, though
and sat with nancy at the pool to talk just a bit before barb disappeared, too
“i’m surprised you’re friends with them, honestly. i thought the chief’s kid would be more cautious and rule-abiding” -nancy
“then you got me all wrong, miss wheeler. rules are for suckers” -you, lighting a cigarette
“pass that this way, y/n” -steve
“get your own” -you
getting pretty freaked when barb went missing since you were the last to see her
steve begged you not to tell your dad
but you really weren’t having it
that’s when you started backing away from your shitty friend group, when nancy asked for your help
because no one believes kids, and you had all the resources she needed
“y/n, come on! we know you wanna hang this weekend, why are you being so difficult?” -steve
“difficult? difficult, steve? you’re kidding, right? all the messed up shit happening around here and you’re calling me difficult for showing caution, concern?” -you
“yeah, i am! since when are you cautious? i’m starting to think you don’t like us anymore” -steve
“i don’t! you’re all assholes who care more about your social self-preservation than the real lives that are at stake! when barb and will are back home safe, maybe i’ll consider a friendship with you, but until then? stay the fuck out of my way” -you
that really struck a chord with steve
but not quite on time considering he resorted to vandalism and picking fights with your crew
“oh, if it isn’t the junior chief. what are you gonna do, cuff us?” -tommy h
“grow the hell up” -you
“surprised you wound up with these two, y/n. they dont seem like your type of people” -steve
“and you are?” -you
after the fight, you got dragged back to the station with powell and callahan
and flo was DEVASTATED you could have been a part of that
“what were you thinking, y/n? these kids, they must be crazy. fights? weapons? you’re just a teenager, you shouldn’t be apart of that. especially with your father around. and what if you were the next to go missing?” -flo
“i promise you, flo, it was just the wrong place at the wrong time. i was trying to make sure they didn’t kill each other. things have been tense in the past week” -you
“oh, i know. you’re a good kid, sweetie” -flo
callahan and powell did have to question you to see what was going on, but they knew you were no snitch
“alright, y/n. go sit in your dad’s office. soon as he gets here, i’m sure he’d love to talk to you” -powell
hopper found you at his desk with your feet kicked up, and from there you hit him with everything you knew so far
“don’t tell me you actually believe all this shit” -hopper
“wish i could tell you i was kidding. but it’s just not adding up. i’ve got a really bad feeling” -you
it was a similar feeling to the weeks before your sister got sick and passed
and you were one of the most level-headed teens to walk the earth, you heard reason and scoffed at anything that fell outside of your bounds
soon after you and your dad were on the same page, he said to you
“think you can stay with a friend for a few days?” -hopper
you soon discovered why when you came home to grab some clothes and found your trailer turned upside down
which made you think this ran even deeper that you previously thought
aaaand eventually this led up to the middle school with a bunch of kids you didn’t know, a few teens you did, and the only adults you trusted
“eleven? hey, kid, you need anything?” -you
“so chief hopper’s kid, who just happens to be the biggest skeptic and irresponsible teen in hawkins, is on the same page as the rest of us now?” -dustin
“i mean, i guess so. theyre here arent they?” -lucas
“who says i’m skeptic and irresponsible?” -you, from behind
“w-what? no, we didn’t say that. i mean—we don’t believe that” -mike
“i’m just playing with you” -you, shaking two of them by the shoulders
your dad came up to you and handed you a revolver and some extra rounds
“you. you are in charge of these kids. you are to keep them safe and use this if absolutely necessary. i’m trusting you” -hopper
“why are you speaking to me like i’m a child?” -you
“because you are one” -hopper
“i know all about gun safety if that’s what you’re worried about” -you
“i’m worried about you and these kids and the monsters that are after you” -hopper
“think i’m not just as worried about you and joyce?” -you
“heh, that’s cute. behave yourself.” -hopper
“yes, sir” -you, sarcastically saluting
it didn’t take long for you and your crew to high tail it to the byers’ residence and make good with your own mission
it was a dumb idea, but so was staying at the school
and while you were preparing for a fight, steve started banging on the door
“steve?” -you
“y/n?” -steve
“get the hell out!” -you
“why do you have a gun?!” -steve
“do you want to find out?!” -you
nancy helped him with that part, pulling her own on him
it was funny (and invigorating) ((you’re a little wacky))
but it was too late and steve decided to join in on the action in some sort of offering of peace
*loud overlapping screaming*
“what…” *pant* “the hell…” *pant* “was that..?” -steve
“…are you insane?!” -you
“what?! what did i do?!” -steve
“you almost got yourself killed!” -you
“it’s okay, y/n…it’s over for now…we’re all okay” -jonathan
“this isn’t over, steve. the hell is wrong with you?” -you
“i was just trying to help, y/n. at least i know you still care” -steve
“i will shoot you if you try any shit like that again” -you
“maybe we should take the gun from them” -nancy
“you want to risk it when they’re this worked up?” -jonathan
you all shouted/talked it out and calmed down and headed back for the middle school together
which was a complete shitshow and you knew your dad would be pissed
but he hugged you and told you that he was proud of you
“give me back my gun” -hopper
you all hung out in the hospital waiting for will to wake up
and the kids huddled around you to ask about the demogorgon
“did you see it? did you shoot it? we saw it! and el completely destroyed it!” -lucas
“yeah, it was badass!” -dustin
“can you teach us how to shoot?” -lucas
“no” -you
you had to meet with a handful of government officials over all you’d just become aware of
mouths? sealed shut
you became closer with the people you almost died with, took special care with the kids
and eventually discovered el was still alive
“what do you say we move into grandpa’s old cabin?” -hopper

Dating Vance Hopper HCS (AU VER)
This is what it’s like dating Vance Hopper in my Ultim Hawkins AU (AKA an AU that’s just a whole bunch of AUs stuck together [plus OCs])
Warnings: None!<3
AN: Not proof read!! Was this an excuse to write about my AU? Oh yes absolutely. Will I regret it? NEVER. Don’t be afraid to send in a request! I don’t really have much to write so I can do more AU headcanons for like Robin or something
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To start with, Vance has A-LOT of siblings.
Though he only grew up with his older sister and sadly had to watch as their younger sister passed, he now has two more sisters and three more brothers
If you decide to spend the day at his house expect ZERO privacy from Roxy barging in to ask for cash to Will gently knocking on the door asking to borrow some pencils for him and El
You two barely get a moment alone
I can also imagine one day Roxy invites you over for a family dinner and Vance is begging you not to go, but you go anyways cause you’re curious to see what’s it like when all his family is together
Btw his family consists of his father Jim Hopper and his step-mother Joyce Byers. His siblings are Leo, Valerie, Jonathan and Will Byers and Roxanne and Jane Hopper :) [Jane is adopted]
When you finally sit down it’s utter chaos
Will and El are gossiping about kids at their school and judging them
Roxy and Leo look like their about to get into a fist fight (Which Jim is betting 10 bucks Roxy’ll win)
And Joyce is talking to Valerie trying to figure out what Jonathan and Argyle’s relationship is
Needless to say you just end up eating and listening to the different conversations with your hand intertwined with Vance’s, hidden under the table
And if you’re lucky some other guests will be there! Like Murray and his daughter Noelle, Jonathan’s partners Argyle and Nancy, Will’s boyfriends Lucas and Mike, El’s girlfriend Max, Valerie’s friend Bonnie and Jim’s friend Dmitri
Luckily Joyce threatened to take Lonnie to court for mental and physical abuse towards the kids so she got enough cash to buy a big enough house for her seven children
I’d like to imagine that Jonathan brings you two places and will always remind Vance to stay safe and stay with you at all times due to the situation that happened when Vance was in Denver with his birth mom
Joyce is the best mom ever, she supports you two sm and absolutely adores you. Vance loves her more then his birth mother and it shows.
Roxy is also super cool and will dye your hair if you ask since she did her own
It’s 100% canon in this AU that Vance is a punk metal head. You can and will be forced to listen to that kind of music, but if he’s feeling nicer then usual then he’ll let you put on what you like.
Vance most likely struggles in some subjects so you’d offer to help him study, and when you get to his place and tell Joyce she just nods her head like “ya sure. Study.”
But she’s pleasantly surprised when she walks past Vance’s open door to see you and him sitting at his desk with you explaining different aspects that go into solving a two step equation for math
Before you and Vance started dating, Will and El would be with you in their living room watching some program and Vance leaves to go grab some drinks from the fridge when El turns to you and says
“You know Vance has been talking about you ALOT lately. I think he might like you.”
And as your face is turning red Will is interjecting “YOU MEAN THEY AREN’T DATING? Shit. I owe Max 10 bucks now.”
Once Vance gets back he’s confused as he sits down next to you who’s face us flushed scarlet and El who’s mouth is painted with a smug smile
Cat person. If you have a cat expect him to lay on your couch with the cat on his chest as he gently strokes its furr while talking to you

You weren’t sure how your friends had roped you into this, but here you are sat on a stiff log bench, spraying your legs with stinky bug repellent, trying to figure out how you were going to entertain these crazy kids for the next three weeks with nothing but the great outdoors at your disposal. You supposed you had done it as a favor really. Robin and Steve had been recruited by Nancy and Jonathan, who had been recruited by Joyce and Hopper. The first official Hawkins Summer Camp was about to commence and Joyce wanted as many counselors as she could find in anticipation for a large turn out of campers.
When Robin approached you one day as you were browsing in Family Video, you couldn’t resist saying yes. Hell, if Robin asked you to scale the Washington Monument with only your shoelaces you would say yes. You would do anything for her. At some point your friendship had crossed a boundary into something more, and with the fear of actually coming out looming over you, Robin never needed to hear it from you and vise versa. You understood each other and you were both well aware of the feelings you harbored toward each other.
You had officially been dating for six months now, and it had been the best six months of your life. With the mostly conservative viewpoints radiating from Hawkins residents, you both favored the idea of keeping your relationship subtle, a secret if you will. The only other person who truly knew the extent of your relationship was Steve. He was Robin’s best friend and because of that he was slowly becoming your best friend as well. You were so thankful that Robin had a friend who understood her, and accepted her without hate or judgement. You knew that most people, yourself included, were not so lucky. It’s not that other people around you didn’t suspect that you and Robin were extra close, you were sure that Eddie or Nancy or Jonathan noticed the close proximity you would spend with Robin, lingering looks whenever you saw each other, lingering touches when you thought no one was looking. No one questioned it, and you opted to not explain it.
So here you were at the first official Hawkins Summer Camp.
Organized entirely by Joyce Byers, who would be serving as president of the camp. She had somehow roped Jim Hopper into being the forest ranger, forcing him to swear under oath that he would protect the kids from any rouge raccoons or squirrels and whatever else would pose a threat to your camp ground. You were currently set up on the outskirts of Hawkins in the middle of the woods at a campground that had been long forgotten. After a month of restoration and cleaning, the camp was ready to go and you were ready to welcome your campers.
Robin and Steve stood by you as a few cars lined up, ready to drop their kids off at the three week-long-camp. “I know that you two may be rookies, but I’ve been waiting for this moment,” Steve said, puffing his chest out and resting his hands on his hips, mentally gearing up to be the best camp counselor Hawkins has ever seen.
“I have no doubts that your babysitting skills will perfectly transfer over to camp counselor-ing, ole Stevo,” Robin said sarcastically, earning a chuckle from you and a heavy eye roll from Steve.
“You act as if the campers haven’t already been babysat by you for the past three years,” you said.
“Ladies!” Steve said, exasperated, “Let me live! I am excited, please let me have this moment.”
“Right Steve,” you said, walking to where you spotted the Byers family approaching you along with Hopper and El. “Take it all in buddy,” You said patting his chest.
//
“Well, I guess you guys are the only campers we have,” Hopper said dryly, looking at the seven kids sat criss cross on the ground in front of him and then back at Joyce who was nodding reassuringly. “I was going to have your counselors introduce themselves, but you already know all them… What the heck, counselors get up here and come talk to the kids.”
You, Robin and your five friends stood in front of the kids now, they all looked at you with scowls, unimpressed and slightly menacing. “Why don’t each of you still introduce yourselves and tell everyone what activity you will be specializing in,” Joyce said as all of the counselors got lined up.
First in line was Nancy. “Uh hi, I literally have known all of you for years, but I’m Nancy,” she said with a small wave. “I’m one of your camp counselors and together each day we will be shooting archery!” Everyone followed Nancy’s lead. Jonathan was going to be teaching the kids how to survive in the wilderness (think tying knots, starting fires, finding fresh water). Argyle was working with the kids to identify different types of plants and help them create their own ecosphere in a jar. Eddie would be doing music lessons over a campfire each night. Steve would be in charge of all water related activities and serving as lifeguard. Robin would be in charge of the theater lessons and the play, which all of the kids would put on at the end of camp. Next it was your turn to step forward.
“Hey guys, you already know me, but I’m y/n and for the next three weeks we will be doing arts and crafts together! I can’t wait to work with you guys and see what masterpieces you create.”
The kids looked at you somewhat unenthusiastically, with the exception of Will who had a gleam in his eyes.
“Before we go to dinner, we are going to start the night off with the most epic obstacle-course- water-balloon-fight-relay-race any of you have ever seen!” Steve said excitedly.
You and Robin walked closely together as Steve led you and the campers to his elaborately set up obstacle course. You saw a large bucket filled to the brim with water balloons along with a row of tires to jump through, a few baseball bats to spin around on, eggs to balance on spoons, hula hoops.
Steve explained that the object of the game would be to beat your opponent through the course and safely deliver an egg on a spoon to your relay partner all while being pelted with water balloons by spectators. The second relay partner would then complete the second half of the course and whichever team completed the course first would win.
“Alright, everyone get into teams of two,” Steve said.
Your instantly met with Robin’s.
“Want to be my partner?” She questioned quietly.
“Of course,” you said.
And so it was decided that you would go first. You were up against Nancy who was partnered with Jonathan. First up you had to spin around on a bat for thirty seconds. Thoroughly dizzy you stumbled your way over to the row of tires that you had to hop through.
“C’mon y/n!” Robin shouted from where she was waiting at the end of the relay. “You got this!”
You huffed out a breath of frustration as Max chucked a water ballon directly at your head, wetting your hair down in front of your eyes. Pushing your hair aside, you looked up at Robin with a smile, thankful to have her cheering you on.
You had barely gotten through the tire race before Nancy and now hurriedly stepped into the hula hoop where you would have to keep the hoop on your hips for exactly one minute.
It was a close one, but at the last second Nancy lost control of her hula hoop and you miraculously beat her. All that was left to do was put your egg on the spoon and deliver it to Robin. You slowly walked in a straight line to where Robin was waiting to collect the egg, dodging a water balloon heading straight toward you from Mike, ducking carefully as to not drop your precious cargo. Finally after what felt like an eternity, you made it to Robin handing her the egg, while Nancy was still only halfway to Jonathan.
“Okay Robin go!” You shouted excitedly, jumping up and down at your victory. Robin made her way to the second half of the course where she would go up against Jonathan to complete a ring toss, balance beam (you worried for her on that one) and a slip and slide, in which the winner would slide into victory. You jogged down to the end of the course now, at the end of the slip and slide to wait for Robin. You watched with anticipation as Robin and Jonathan went head to head on the ring toss, lucky Robin had won and was moving on to the balance beam. She was making her way very slowly and cautiously and you had to laugh. The girl had never had a day of coordination in her life and you had to give her credit for trying. You couldn’t tear your eyes away from her, taking in her natural beauty and her bright smile She laughed at herself and her balance issues. Just then your attention was averted as Lucas sent a water balloon right to the back of Robin’s head, making her lose her balance and fall to the ground.
“It’s okay Rob,” You shouted to her in encouragement, “You still have time to win this!”
Somehow against all odds, Will launched a water balloon to Jonathan, making him lose his balance too, falling to the ground just as Robin got back onto the beam.
“Go Robin!” You screamed, as other counselors and campers cheered along with you.
“Robin! Robin! Robin!” You all chanted as she hurriedly (but carefully) made her way to the end of the balance beam. She took off running to the slip and slide, diving head first and sliding to where you were waiting at the end. You must have been standing a bit too close though, because with Robin's momentum and maybe her lack of coordination, as she stood up she collided directly into you, forcing you to topple over and fall to the ground with Robin falling on top of you, barely able to feel the weight of her pressing into your body.
For a moment you just stared at each other, looking deeply into one another’s eyes. You both understood that if no one was around nothing would stop you from crashing your lips onto hers, fully taking in all of her body on top of yours. However you couldn’t do that. Not with Jonathan sliding down the slip and slide behind you, not with Steve rushing over to hand Robin a huge trophy, not with all of the campers and other counselors rushing toward you both. For a moment your soul crushed, your bones feeling like they were breaking, not from the weight of Robin on top of you, but from not being able to kiss your girlfriend in front of all of these people. You looked at Robin again, a different look now in both of your eyes now. She quickly got off of you offering her hand to you to help you up. You took her hand as she pulled you up to a standing position and you held her hand for an extra second longer than you should have, looking at her and giving her hand tight squeeze.
“I’m so proud of you,” you said somberly, almost wanting to cry.
“Thanks, y/n,” Robin said, letting both of your hands fall to your sides now. “Couldn’t have done it without you.”
Steve handed Robin her trophy and presented you with one of your own while Jonathan ran to go grab his camera, returning to snap a quick photo of you guys. You knew once that photo was developed you were gonna treasure it forever.
“Alright who’s next?” Steve questioned as Max and El stepped up to go against Dustin and Lucas.
You watched with admiration, water balloons in hand ready to pelt the kids as they cheerfully completed the course. You stood next to Robin now, probably closer than your should have but you didn’t care.
The relay race went on for a while longer, but you hardly noticed, just happy to be in the presence of your sweet, sweet girlfriend, in the middle of the woods somewhere Hawkins, Indiana. Maybe you couldn’t be exactly who you wanted to be in front of everyone. But you and Robin were each others’ and that was all that mattered to you. That was all that you could ask for, just to be with her.
With everyone at least somewhat air dried now, the obstacle course had been completed and Steve was in all of his glory, happy that everyone participated in his activity. Even Joyce and Hopper, much to Hopper’s dismay.
“C’mon guys,” you said, rounding up all of the kids, glancing up at Robin adoringly. “It’s time for dinner.”
//
In the dining hall you formed a line and grabbing a tray you were met with none other than Murray Bauman the camp’s appointed chef who insisted the first meal of the night be his famous dish “Mommy Murray’s Risotto.”
“I’ll have the risotto, please,” Steve said, stepping up to stepping up to Murray with his tray to be served.
“Ah ah ah, I have prepared no such thing as mere “risotto” please address the dish by its proper name,” Murray demanded.
“Holy shit, there’s no way you actually want us to call it that,” Robin said, standing behind you, shooting you a quick glance, her radiant smile tugging at your heart strings.
“If you can’t respect me and my dishes then I cannot respect your hunger. Repeat after me: Mommy. Murray’s. Risotto.” Murray said slowing, motioning to Steve to say it with him.
“Uh okay… M-mommy Murray’s Risotto, there are you happy?”
“Very,” Murray said, scooping a large helping of the coveted risotto onto Steve’s tray.
“Thanks… asshole,” Steve walked away, saying the last part under his breath.
“Hey, I heard that! Do not disrespect me or my Mommy Murray’s Risotto ever again!”
You and Robin giggled as you got your food and made your way to the counselor’s table where Steve, Eddie, Argyle, Jonathan and Nancy were already sitting. You sighed contently, digging into your food, feeling ravenously hungry from the day of checking in the kids and getting them moved in and giving your all in the water balloon obstacle course. Say what you want about Murray but he knew how to make a mean risotto.
Robin sat next to you, discretely tapping your foot with her own from under the table. A secret little message from her that you understood as her way of saying that she was right there, happy to be with you, even if it was in secret.
“Hey Rob,” Steve said, glancing at Robin from where he was sitting and talking to Nancy Jonathan, Argyle and Eddie, “tell everyone about the time that you had to perform the Heimlich on me after I choked on that grape at work!”
The group laughed enthusiastically as Robin animatedly explained how she narrowly saved Steve’s life from the grape he chocked on one day while on their lunch break at Family Video. Robin’s arms moved haphazardly as she retold the story, she looked so goofy and sweet and you couldn’t help to just take all of her beauty in. She was so special to you, even in these silly moments where she used her lighthearted and sarcastic jokes. You often grew sentimental at the fact that you got to be in a relationship with her. A secret relationship yes, but a relationship nonetheless.
You then refocused your attention back on the entire group. “Right, y/n?” you heard Robin asked.
“What?” You questioned, realizing you had zoned out of the conversation.
“I said that after that day I saved Steve’s life, y/n over here told me I should be the one doing all of the babysitting not Steve.”
“Ah yes, that is true and I did mean it, Robin is a superstar with the kids and a bonus! She knows how to perform the Heimlich,” you said, making eye contact with Robin. She looked back at you hard now, her blue eyes piercing your soul. Her foot tapped on yours again, this time little three taps I love you.
You tapped her foot back three times. //
Back in your cabins, you Nancy and Robin shared the “girls only” cabin, while Steve, Eddie, Jonathan and Argyle shared the other cabin. Hopper was sure to give you an hour long lecture about sneaking out to meet up with the boys along with a long list of “Don’t’s.”
Don’t sneak out. Don’t kiss each other. Don’t sneak into the cabin of the opposite gender. And absolutely do not hook up with each other. Luckily for you, you and Robin were already in the same cabin. Along with Nancy. It’s not like you were going to try anything with Nancy right there in the same room as you and Robin, but once she was fast asleep, your quietly crept over to Robin’s cot-like bed.
“Excuse me ma’am, are you in need of a cuddle?” You asked, scooting yourself under the covers with to Robin, her arms opening and pulling you in.
“Oh yes, that’s exactly what I needed, how did you know?” Robin said, taking you into her arms and holding you close to her, your head resting on her chest, listening to the soft sound of her heart beating.
“I just knew. What can I say,” you joked, “I’m psychic.”
You and Robin spent the next few hours just in each other’s presence, neither of you talking, but not sleeping either. You didn’t want to wake up Nancy with the sound of your voices. You enjoyed this quiet, seemingly normal time with Robin more than anything else in the world. It was rare you got to be alone in each other’s spaces, being who you truly are together. There was no faking, no pretending. Just you and your girlfriend, Robin.
You spoke suddenly, but in the most quiet whisper. “You’re my girlfriend.”
“Uh yeah, I would hope so, or it would be really awkward if I did this,” Robin whispered to you, placing a soft, delicate kiss onto your lips. “I wouldn’t do that to just anyone, ya know.”
“I know. I’m just happy you’re mine. Even if we have to hide forever, I’d do it for you. I would do anything for you.”
“I would do anything for you too,” Robin paused, looking at you intently, deep emotion spreading across her face. “I love you, ya know.”
Your heart filled with warmth at the confession. “I know. I love you too.”

In Our Favor
Part 189
McCoy
“Leonard?”
McCoy turned quickly at the sound of Pike's voice calling him quietly.
“Yes sir?” He hesitated a moment, then fell into step beside the older man.
“I’ve done my reading and I still have some contacts here in the Fleet as you know,” Pike began.
McCoy began to frown slightly. He wasn’t sure where their former headmaster was going.
“And of course I recognized the name of your friend.” Pike gestured subtly at Aporal. “Have you taken my advice about Kinnear and kept your head down?”
McCoy’s shoulders dropped. “For myself sir, yes. However his nephew had a grudge against myself and Scotty from the start. He went too far in self defense against Scotty and Aporal defended him. From that Aporal became one of Francis’ targets as well, and that led to all the rest.”
“I see,” said Pike.
“Everything has been much calmer since Francis left,” McCoy finished. “You remember Lt. Cmdr. Sullivan? Kinnear’s aide? Cora is his sister.” He gestured toward where Cora was walking with Eugene and Christine.
“And how is your sister?” Pike asked, as they picked up their pace to join the back of the group again.
“Good,” McCoy said quickly. “All recovered.”
“I haven’t had the time lately to have a nice chat with your father,” Pike said. “I’ll have to make time.”
“I’m sure he’d like that sir,” McCoy smiled. Moving up next to Scotty, McCoy slipped his hand into his husband’s.
“And how are you getting on Montgomery?” Pike asked as they kept heading for the lunch waiting in the dining hall. “Courses up to your liking?”
“Aye sir,” Scotty replied.
“He asked about Kinnear,” McCoy said in a whisper to Scotty as they ate. Jim was sitting next to Pike and talking away at him.
“What about?” Scotty asked back, turning wide eyes to McCoy.
“Making sure I was following his advice to behave.” McCoy grinned as he looked at Scotty. “He read the article or heard about it from someone here.”
“Do you think the admiral will really leave us alone now?” Scotty asked in a worried voice.
McCoy nodded his head at Aporal. “He took down Kinnear’s nephew; I’d like to think he’d think twice about going after us again.”
“I hope so,” Scotty said, looking back down at his food.
“Montgomery Scotty taught a class!”
Jaylah’s loud exclamation had both McCoy and Scotty looking over at her. Jaylah was looking at Pike and smiling proudly.
“You did?” Pike looked down the table at Scotty.
“I- I- I-” Scotty began to turn red.
“He did a wonderful job,” Cora spoke up. “I learned so much that day!”
“How did that happen?” Pike asked curiously.
Part 190
Scotty
The blush on Scotty's cheeks only increased at that question. He shrugged his shoulders.
"Oh, ye know, I'm... a good student," Scotty muttered. He heard Aporal chuckle next to him.
"Yeah, right. Because that's the reason for it," said the Andorian quietly, a smirk on his face. Scotty sent him a glare before he looked back at Pike who had raised an eyebrow at him.
"Well, maybe I talked a wee bit too loud about our instructor's teaching methods. And... he dared me to do better than him."
A soft smile pulled at the headmaster's lips as he nodded his head.
"I see. Talking about teachers behind their backs again, huh?"
Scotty felt even more heat filling his cheeks and he lowered his eyes. He knew that Pike was obviously talking about Archer. Jim and Scotty had often made fun of the stern faced teacher back at school and maybe their headmaster had heard it more often than they expected. But in the end, Archer had changed his way of thinking about scholarship holders and everything had changed for the better.
"How's Archer anyway?" Jim asked with a grin, obviously trying to change the subject. Scotty sent him a grateful look.
"Oh, Jonathan is fine. He asked me to tell you his best regards," Pike replied with a smile. "All of you."
Scotty nodded. Despite his history with Archer, he actually believed those words to be true.
The younger students had the afternoon off because of the visitors. There was a big ceremony and they were allowed to ask everyone questions.
Scotty met lots of engineers and talked to them about their experiences. The visit of the USS Hammersley had been special already, but this event was even better. So many people who had worked for Starfleet for several years. It was just awesome!
When everyone met again for dinner in the evening, Scotty could tell by the look on Jim's face that the blond didn't want for Pike to leave. He stayed close to the man at all times.
"Is he okay?" Leonard asked quietly when he sat down next to Scotty, nodding towards Jim. He was a wee bit later than the others due to his appointment with the psychologist.
Scotty sighed.
"I'm not sure. Guess he's sad that the day's already over."
They were chatting away about the day when suddenly a familiar voice filled their ears.
"Well, if it isn't the famous Christopher Pike?"
Everyone turned their heads to see Cmdr. Madison coming over to them. Scotty tried his best not to wince at the voice. He didn't have too many good memories with it.
"Harold Madison. Still here I see?" Pike looked at the man.
"I made the right decision, staying in the fleet. Even though some students might disagree." Madison glanced at Scotty and the Scotsman lowered his head. Pike looked at him too and seemed to understand.
"Well, you never were really adventurous. It was kinda obvious that you'd end up being an instructor after serving."
"I stayed loyal to Starfleet."
A strange tension lingered in the air. Apparently the two men had a history together.
"And I help raise the teenagers who will come here. Do not call me disloyal, Harold."
Madison huffed.
"You were one of the best, Christopher. And you turned your back on us. Just like that."

Jopper's headcanon: they had a daughter in 1968
Tumblr media
I have already written about how they could have had an unplanned daughter: here to read the headcanon.
Now, knowing she was born in 1968, middle child and from another father in comparison to Jonathan and Will, let's see how she'd be.
First of all — she has her mother's eyes and hair, and her father's nose. She's taller than Joyce, let's say she has Jonathan height which is a lot for a 80s high school girl. Her shoulders are just like her father's: broad and beautiful, while her long legs and tight hips matches her mother's phisique.
She was born and grewp up around men her whole life, and Joyce is pretty grunge and was pretty grunge even in her early days, so she's never learned how to be a girly girl. Sure, she's always been Hop's princess — he calls her peach, and painted her bedroom lilac, gifted her a bunch of old, romantic movies from the 50s ("Roman Holidays", "Gone with the Wind", "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", "The Carpetbaggers" and so on), and she is still very much a daddy's girl, but... she secretly listen to Joan Jett (and Metallica, The Scorpions, Cutting Crew, Ozzy and all that metal stuff Joyce would be impressed with and Jim would find slightly disturbing), insisting on wearing her hair short, and wearing the oversized jacket Hop brought home once from the Police Station. It's like his blue one, just a couple of sizes smaller (still, too big) and she took off the Police badgers. She's got at least four pair of jeans, all the same, tight on the hips and large around the calves, and several Hawkins High sweatshirt (so that her mama doesn't have to buy more for her too). Jim has tried a couple of time asking her about shopping, but she doesn't really seem interested. She should wear glasses, but she never does.
You want to see how she looked like? Here she is (inspo model).
Joyce chose her name all alone. Lonnie wasn't interested when he found out (or rather, he thought) he was having a girl — just another bloody good-for-nothing woman, we really didn't need that. So, Joyce chose alone. And she wanted her name to be strong and glorious, despite anything Lonnie would say. She chose Rhiannon. Rhiannon Byers. It was unique — maybe too much, since she never introduced with that name, opting for Ari or just peach, since everyone in Hawkins knew her by that name.
She was known, indeed, as the Chief's daughter. And people knew she was a Byers — even though, in the end, she found out the truth about her birth — but they still thought of her as a Hopper. She asked for her last name to be changed. She reffered, in front of teachers and classmates, to Jim Hopper as her dad. People were confused. Joyce had to explain many many times — but she refused to lecture her daughter about it. There were suspicions... she looked nothing like Lonnie. Nor Jonathan or Will, for what's worth. And while she had the best relationship with Will — being protective and supporting him, playing d&d and always acting the part of the monster to be defeated in the Byers' Fort, into the wood, playing knights with her brother — she always fought with Jonathan. And they fought hard. He accused her of not wanting to be part of their life, calling Jim a father while he never was for any of them (still, not knowing the whole truth), she accused him of being envy, and too proud to accept help anytime Jim offered. Jim and Joyce, slowly getting together and falling in love, would talk about this a lot.
She smokes her father's cigarettes, and she knows he knows but they both don't speak about it. She feels guilty every time.
Yes, she has the biggest daddy issue. She grew up twelve years in an abusive household, Lonnie being a prick and mocking her constantly: she was weak, and too small, and braid made her look like an idiot, she would be a waste of time growing up, and who would have ever wanted her? She looked stupid like her mother. These words echoes in her mind every single day, and she does her best to prove them wrong. She wants to be her father's favorite person. She wants to be smart enough, and she struggles to get good grades (not always succeding) and she shouldn't be smoking but curiosity got the best of her, and she started during her first high school year. She just wants to be like him. But he doesn't really see that... he cares and he loves her, but as most fathers in the 80s he's not that good at speaking heart to heart. Mama's the best. Ari rarely spend any time at the Byers house — and Joyce fine with it, since Rhiannon is always at school, in the library, at the Police Station, and when she doesn't want to sleep at home it's because she's sleeping at Jim's — but when she does, they spend hours talking in front of a cup of tea. Mama always has the answer.
Joyce knows deep down Rhiannon is sensitive and sweet like her brothers, just a little rough on the edges like her father. She has a temper, no doubt, and she is a little capricious since Jim spoils her way too much. But still, she is a funny sweet girl.
They drink tea together, on weekends, and they sometimes paint with Will.
She dreams of working for her dad at the Hawkins PD and, for a while, like any other girl in school, she had the hugest cruch on Steve Harrington. Put it was quickly gone and Jim was relive you didn't seem too much interested in guys.
He teaches her how to Rockabilly jive and they perform every Christmas, to the great entertainment of her brothers and Joyce. She would never admit it, but she loves to jive with her dad, she'd gladly to it every other day. Christmas is her favorite day of the year... because on that day she is sure to have her family reunited. And with time passing by, there won't be a single day they won't spend under the same roof. Her brother, her mother and her father — a real family, after all. A little broken, a little messy... but a family nonetheless.

Sinclair's adopt Steve
this is a a part of the Sinclair's adopt Steve fic I am writing, I needed to write this out so I did. Enjoy this snippet. (Also if anyone has that post about Jim and Joyce not really liking Steve please send it to me so I can link it here. I can't find it anymore ;( and I know I had it saved somewhere.)
It's the awkward comment that causes Joyce and Hopper to realize they're not as discreet as they thought. The older kids aside from Steve are hanging out at the Hopper-Byers. The kids were at the Wheeler's house for a sleepover and Hop had allowed Jane to join because both parents were home and Vecna was dead, so it would be fine. Sue and Charles Sinclair, Claudia Henderson and Wayne Munson, Joyce and Jim Hopper-Byers, Jonathan Byers, Argyle, Nancy Wheeler, Eddie Munson, and Robin Buckley were sitting around the table talking, catching up.
Mid conversation Sue's phone rang loudly. She glanced down and answered her cell.
“Hey baby. Is everything-” her voice cut off. She listened intently to the person on the other end. She nodded, she turned to her husband, “one second baby ok?” Sue turned to Charles, and put the call on hold.
“Steve needs to be picked up, his car broke down, and he just got it towed. He's at Rodney's. Can you get him?”
Charles paused, thinking, “yes I should be able to get him, I'd have to get gas but I'll have my phone on, I'll be there in forty to forty-five minutes.”
Sue nodded and relayed the information to Steve before hanging up. As she hung up she glanced up and noticed the barely held expressions on Jim Hopper’s face as well as Joyce Byers. Jim looked annoyed, and Joyce looked mildly disgusted. Sue didn’t want to say anything, and she didn’t have to because Joyce’s son Jonathon did.
“Mom,” his voice was calm but there was something else hidden in his tone, an anger Sue wasn’t expecting. “why do you and Hop look annoyed or angry everytime Steve is mentioned or brought up in a conversation or over at our house?”
Joyce blinked in shock, “oh I was thinking about something. It’s ok dear,”
Jim snorted and gave her a look. But Jonathon persisted, “No mom I know you and I know the faces you make. What is your problem with Steve? He’s a good guy mom.”
Charles quietly slipped out of the room, he had someone to pick up. Sue caught his eyes as he was leaving and gave him a look, he mouthed a simple, “I’ll bring him home to ours and stay with him. Call me if you need.” she gave him a nod and turned back to the conversation.
Jim and Joyce seemed to be communicating silently and finally Joyce turned to her son and stated, “I don’t like that he made you fight. You have never been an angry kid ever and he made you fight, he got into trouble and he never really apologized for it, honey that’s all.”
Jonathan looked at his mother in shock. And before anyone could say anything else Jim added, “besides he is a troublemaker. He got into fights and had a lot of parties. Do you know many noise complaints I had to deal with at the Harrington house? The fact that his parents didn’t instill in him any manners is not-”
Jim was cut off by Nancy’s sharp gasp. He looked at her, her face ashen, her hand covering her open mouth.
Jonathon sucked in a deep breath, “God no wonder he doesn’t trust you. You can barely hide the disdain on your faces when he was just mentioned. But this is crazy.” he turned to his mother,  “Steve apologized to me and Nancy several times already for that fight.”
Joyce opened her mouth to say something but Jonathon had already turned to Hopper, “Steve had parties because he was popular and wanted to fit in, that doesn’t make him a troublemaker. Besides Hop, I was at some of those parties. It’s normal teenager stuff but his neighbors in particular don’t like any noise. We drove up to his house once during the day and there was an officer there because his car made a loud noise, so they had a noise complaint. It’s unrealistic to get upset or lose respect for a teenager acting like a teenager. Steve never hurt anyone Hop, in fact he was one of the only people to make sure that girls got home safely. He made sure they all had a way home, and if they got drunk he’d offer them a ride with another one of their sober friends to make sure they all got back safely.”
Before anyone else could add in anything Sue injected, “you know Chief, I thought you were a mandated reporter. You don’t think it was suspicious that the Harrington parents never were around to help that boy?  You don’t it’s weird that his parents are not ever reachable to and I’m paraphrasing you here: ‘instill good manners into him’? Don’t you think most parents would answer when you’ve called about their son being in hospital, or getting hurt?” She looked directly at him and Jim found himself floundering because he had thought it was weird. But what did he know about the elite and their small issues? Steve Harrington is a rich white boy with wealthy parents who probably doted on him and at most his most pressing issue was not getting the girl he wanted.
Jonathan finally looked up at his mother and stated, “the reason for the fight we had was because I took a photo of Nancy and him without either of their consent and knowledge and Steve rightfully got angry at me and fought me for violating his and his then-girlfriend’s privacy. He fought with me and he apologized for it even though I should have apologized to him and Nancy first. We have since made up, and forgiven each other. But that still doesn’t explain anything.”
Sue interjected, “Joyce, Jim, you are in some ways a lot more aware of our kids and their little friend group and you do know more than I or my husband do when it comes to what made them such close friends, but I will say this as Steve Harrington’s mother in all but blood, Do not let Jane hear you talk like that about Steve. She adores him like he’s her older brother and she will not take kindly to that. Secondly, Steve is not Richard Harrington, they are two different people and judging Steve on who his father is, is a huge disservice to him especially since he has done his best to be someone different then his parents. And lastly, Steve Harrington-Sinclair was kicked out and disowned by his parents two years ago during his last year of high school due to him leaving the basketball team due to his brain trauma. Maybe you should try getting to know him, before making a judgment call on him based on who you think he was some years back.”
Sue stood up and grabbed her stuff, “if you excuse me I have a son to get home too.” She walked out, head held high.
They watched her leave and before anyone could say another word Wayne spoke up, “I may not have been that boy’s number one fan, but he’s good. He’s a good kid. He tries real hard to be a good person and role model to your kids. But you miss the person he became because you’re too busy with your preconceived notion of who he is, instead of getting to know who he actually is.” he shook his head. “C’mon Eddie let's get home. I have a night shift I gotta get ready for.” Both Munson men got up and gathered their things and left as well.
Once it was only Jim, Joyce, Nancy, Robin, Argyle and Jonathon, Joyce looked up at her son. He seemed sad, “mom, do you know that Will came out to Steve before he came out to the party? Do you know that Steve is the first person aside from you and I that Will felt enough to come out too? Steve made it a point to remind and show Will that he is always safe with him. Do you know Hop, that when Jane got sick last week she called Steve after you because she knew he’d not only pick her up from school but he’d take her home and take care of her until either you, mom or I got back from work. If he’s so bad, why do all the kids gravitate towards him? Why does Jane call him her big brother? Would Will feel safe around him?” Jonathan shook his head at them, “I have a friend to get to, I gotta go also.” The remaining teens got up and gathered their stuff.
Robin had stayed quiet the entire time, not daring to speak or else she’d lose her mind at them and curse them out. But right as they left, she turned towards them and looked at them both, her voice low and hurt, “he was the first and only person I came out to, and not only did he reassure me while we were being hurt, he protected me. I have met Richard Harrington and Steve is nothing like him.”
The door slammed shut behind the older teenagers, Jim and Joyce waited for a minute, breathing calmly or at least attempting to, “maybe we should take their advice and get to know him?” both of them thought quietly.
Joyce and Jim hoped they weren’t too late to find out what about Steve Harrington had caught their kids and their respective parents’ attention.

I got tagged in a WIP Wednesday by @dreamwatch ! I've never actually been tagged in one of these before, I was actually so excited to share that I ran around the house finishing up chores so I wouldn't feel bad if i just focussed on this :P
Anyhow! This is the beginning of what is currently titled Untitled Action Fic, which, yes, very creative, and it is part of my Sarge Series on ao3 :)
Jim Hopper had about four and a half minutes left on the clock. He was sitting in his car, head back against the headrest, eyes closed. His hat was on the seat beside him. There was no use getting anything started, as anything he could do would take longer than he was willing to stay. It was movie night, a tradition that Joyce, and now El, took very seriously. It was Will’s turn to pick the movie, but knowing Will, that really meant it was El’s turn to pick the movie. She was exploring her genres lately, so he had no idea what he expected to go home to.  His radio crackled to life. “Hey, Chief, you there?” Came Callahan’s voice. He groaned and cracked an eye open. Three minutes and forty seconds left.  “Whaddaya want?” “Got a weird call from the Leary family, up in Loch Nora.” Fuck. After his year undercover, Jim had instructed the station to make sure any “weird” calls weren’t dismissed, and that they go directly to him. The team had looked at him strangely when he had said it, but the government officials that had stood behind him intimidatingly had convinced them not to argue. Thus far, it really just meant that he had investigated a “monster” which had turned out to be a cat with a missing eye, and a “gate to the hell dimension” -- that one had sent his heart racing -- which had ended up being Jonathan’s friend, who had definitely taken too much of something.  He probably should’ve arrested the kid for possession, but he couldn’t not look the other way when he knew how much he had done for El. He had dropped him off at home instead, and made sure someone was there to take care of him before he had left.  “Yeah, what kind of weird?” He grumbled into his walkie.  “She says her neighbour’s house fell apart. Says that half of it fell into the pool.” Into the -- ?!  “Gimme the address.”  ~ The house looked like something had taken a giant bite out of it. Planks of plywood were hanging off of the torn edges, and shattered glass was tumbling down the sides of it. Jim could even see into one of the surviving rooms; a large bed dangled off the edge of the torn floorboards dangerously, threatening to fall into the pool. The pool that was now a pulsing, wet membrane. It looked like it was breathing. The concrete surrounding the pool disappeared and reappeared as the gate to the Upside Down threatened to stretch further. He called for backup immediately, and made his way around the neighbouring houses, ordering them to evacuate.  It was on his way back to check on the gate that he realized with horror that he recognized the BMW parked in the driveway.
I don't know how many people I'm supposed to tag, but out of my moots, I know @aringofsalt , @shares-a-vest , and @eddiequinns all write fic, so there! (also, more of you, but i am bad at remembering who's who, i mostly just tagged the first folks that i could find chronologically that mentioned their fic in either their bio or first few posts). No pressure to respond, if you don't wanna do it just consider this a hello :D and if you do wanna do it and i didn't tag you, go right ahead, i love love love these kind of chain games :)

Chapter Sixteen: True Home
Tumblr media
Anyone who hadn’t yet seen Will’s drawings covering the house didn’t even ask.
On the couch lay the poor boy, who was still asleep. Jonathan was knelt beside him, softly speaking to him as he brushed his hair back. “I’m sorry, bud. Sorry I wasn’t there. I should have been here.”
Steve stood off to the side, watching as Nancy set a comforting hand on Jonathan’s shoulder. He had no room to feel any sort of jealousy towards Jonathan, not with everything going on. In fact, he was less worried for himself and more for the entire Byers family. The things they had been through, before and after Will was taken into the Upside Down. They just couldn’t seem to catch a break.
Still, the ache in his chest didn’t loosen when watching Nancy comfort him, knowing she was gone who-knows-where with him for more than one day. More than one night. Sniffling to keep his composure, he exited the room, passing Hopper, who was irritably speaking on the phone.
“I don’t know how many people are left alive!”
“Have you contacted the police?” The female voice on the other end patiently spoke.
“I am the police! Chief Jim Hopper!”
“Is there a number I can reach you at?”
He scoffed. “Yes, the number that I gave you, yes. 6767…”
“I’ll have them contact you.”
“I will be here.” He hissed through his clenched teeth before slamming the phone back on the wall. At the kitchen table sat the kids, who had been staring at Hopper while he was on the phone.
“They didn’t believe you, did they?”
Hopper turned to Dustin. “We’ll see.”
That lit a fire in Mike. “‘We’ll see’? We can’t just sit here while those things are loose!”
“We stay here, and we wait for help.”
“And what about my sister, huh? None of us have any idea where she is right now! What, we’re just supposed to sit and wait until she’s okay? No, we need to find her before they do!”
Hopper ran a hand down his face. “We can’t go out there right now. Not with those things. We’re no good to her if we’re dead. We stay and we wait. We will find her.” He left the room, anxiously running his hand through his hair. In all honesty, Hopper was worried sick about Doc. In a life-threatening situation, she was MIA. Last he saw her, she was itching to be away from his watchful eye, but now he wished that eye never left her. It may have been insufferable for her, but at least he knew she was okay.
And Eleven. He hadn’t spoken to her since their argument. If she was following the rules, then she was safer than Doc. At least she was in a boarded up space with a heavily-locked door. All she had to do was just listen. Just listen to him. He would be home to her soon.
And in the case that the two of them had found each other, he just hoped they were using their heads. Hopper let out a shaky exhale at the thought of the two of them in danger, either on their own or together. But there was nothing he could do about it right now. However, there was a third person on his list to fret over. And she was just down the hall.
Mike’s glare followed Hopper until he disappeared into Joyce’s bedroom. Most likely to comfort her after losing Bob. With a sigh, he buried his face into his hands. Dustin and Lucas shared a worried look before turning back to their friend.
“Hey, man… Come on, Doc’s fine.” Lucas tried to soothe.
“You don’t know that. None of us know that except for her, a-and she’s not even here to tell us. She won’t answer her walkie. That means she doesn’t have it or she’s too far for the signal to reach. I mean, she was… she was right beside me. She was sleeping. And I woke up and… she was gone. And all her note said was that she had to go. And not to worry about her,” He looked up at the two. “You think that means she’s not coming back?”
Dustin shook his head. “No. She wouldn’t leave you, Mike. She loves you, man. You’re, like, her favorite person in the whole world. She wouldn’t do that.”
He tried to blink back the tears stinging his eyes. “She probably wanted to get away from me. I’ve been horrible to her. I-I ignored her because I was angry about Eleven. I hurt her feelings. I hurt her. And I didn’t even say I was sorry. But I am. A-And then she got distant and I tried to talk to her, but… she just wouldn’t. And now she’s gone.”
Steve spoke up from the side. “You can’t think like that, Mike.”
“Thinking on the bright side doesn’t help find her. And it doesn’t help if she’s in danger.”
“Well, yeah, but if no one thinks she’s alive, she might as well be dead. I know your sister, dude. She’s awesome. She’s strong. If she was able to get through everything she’s been through, then she can survive these stupid monster-things. We just gotta be on her side… or no one else will be.”
Mike slowly nodded in determination. Steve was right. Doc had done the unspeakable, but she had also gone through the unspeakable to have to do so. She didn’t ask for this life, but she’s battling through it while finding a way to live it. Mike supposed that his family and friends were her way of living through the battle. She had done so much for them, she had killed for them. The very least they could do was have hope in her. Though, it didn’t settle his worry. Only her being with him would do that.
His eyes moved from the empty space he found himself staring at to the puzzles Bob had brought over in hopes of cheering up Will. His heart broke at all they had been through with him in the last 48 hours. Bob didn’t deserve what he got. He deserved to be here with them, alive, still fighting. He was a hero just as much as anyone in this house. A superhero.
Standing to his feet, Mike made his way over to the puzzles, picking up the blue Soma cube with a heavy heart. “Did you guys know that Bob was the original founder of Hawkins AV?”
“Really?” Lucas spoke as everyone looked to Mike. He turned to them and made his way back to the kitchen.
“He petitioned the school to start it and everything. Then he had a fundraiser for equipment. Mr Clarke learned everything from him. Pretty awesome, right?” He set the cube on the table. “We can’t let him die in vain.”
“What do you wanna do, Mike?” Dustin sharply asked. “The Chief’s right on this. We can’t stop those Demodogs on our own.”
Max blinked. “Demodogs?”
Dustin looked at her as if it were obvious. “Demogorgon. Dogs. Demodogs. It’s like a compound. It’s like a play on words-”
“Okay.”
He dropped his gaze and his enthusiasm before turning back to Mike. “I mean, when it was just Dart, maybe…”
“But there’s an army now.” Lucas finished his thought.
“Precisely.”
Mike’s eyes widened. “His army.”
Steve looked up at him in confusion. “What do you mean?”
“His army. Maybe if we stop him, we can stop his army, too.” He then led them into Will’s room, going to his dresser and picking up the boy’s drawing of the shadow monster and handing it to Dustin.
“The shadow monster.”
“It got Will that day on the field. Doc saw it, remember? She said it entered him, possessed him. The doctor said it was like a virus, it infected him.”
Max furrowed her brows. “And so this virus, it’s connecting him to the tunnels?”
“To the tunnels, monsters, the Upside Down, everything.”
“Whoa,” Steve took the drawing from Dustin to examine it. “Slow down. Slow down.”
Mike sighed. “Okay, so, the shadow monster’s inside everything. And if the vines feel something like pain, then so does Will.”
“And so does Dart.” Lucas added.
“Yeah. Like what Mr Clarke taught us. The hive mind.”
“Hive mind?” Steve shook his head.
“A collective consciousness. It’s a super organism.” Dustin informed.
Lucas fearfully widened his eyes. “Wait. If Doc could sense the Upside Down and creatures from the Upside Down, would she be apart of the hive mind?”
“No,” Mike shook his head. “She said after Will was infected, he was threatened by her. He’s been acting weird around her. Before she left, he had been afraid of her touching him. Then at the lab, he said he tried to get rid of her.”
“He tried to what?”
“That’s how much it's threatened. That’s how much it doesn’t want her near. So, no, she can’t be apart of it. It wouldn’t even let her. Besides, this is the thing that controls everything. It never controlled her. It’s like the brain.”
Dustin quietly gasped. “Like the Mind Flayer.” He thought aloud, Lucas snapping his fingers in understanding. Steve and Max frowned in confusion.
“The what?”
In the kitchen, Will’s D&D book had been thrown onto the table that everyone was now gathered around. Dustin opened it and turned to the exact page he needed. “The Mind Flayer.”
“What the hell is that?” Hopper asked, unimpressed.
“It’s a monster from an unknown dimension. It’s so ancient that it doesn’t even know its true home. Okay, it enslaves races of other dimensions by taking their brains using its highly-developed psionic powers.”
“Oh my god, none of this is real. This is a kids’ game.”
“No, i-it- it’s a manual. And it’s not for kids,” He quickly defended. “And unless you know something that we don’t, this is the best metaphor-”
“Analogy.” Lucas corrected, receiving raised brows from Dustin.
“Analogy? That’s what you’re worried about?! Fine! An analogy for understanding whatever the hell this is!”
Nancy leaned down to inspect the page better. “Okay, so this Mind Flamer thing-”
“Flayer. Mind Flayer.”
She sighed. “What does it want?”
“To conquer us, basically. It believes it’s the master race.”
Steve perked up. “Oh, like the… Like the Germans.”
Everyone’s expressions were a mix of disbelief and annoyance as Dustin slowly turned to him.
“Uh, the Nazis?”
Steve froze. “Yeah, yeah, yeah, the Nazis.”
“Uh… If the Nazis were from another dimenstion, totally. Uh, it views other races, like us, as inferior to itself.”
“It wants to spread, take over other dimensions.” Mike explained.
“We are talking about the destruction of our world as we know it.” Lucas exclaimed.
Steve scoffed and began to pace. “That’s great. That’s great. That’s really great. Jesus!”
Nancy picked up the book from the table to get an even closer look at the photos and text written. “Okay, so, if this thing is like a brain that’s controlling everything, then if we kill it…”
“We kill everything it controls.” Mike finished.
“We win.” Dustin nodded.
“Theoretically.” Lucas added.
“Great,” Hopper took the book from Nancy. “So, how do you kill this thing? Shoot it with Fireballs or something?”
Dustin chuckled. “No. No, no Fire- No Fireballs,” He dropped his smile at the pointed look he received. “Uh, you summon an undead army, uh, because… because zombies, you know, they- they don’t- they don’t have brains, and the Mind- the Mind Flayer, it… it… it likes brains.”
Hopper straightened.
“It’s just a game. It’s a game.”
He threw the book back onto the table. “What the hell are we doing here?”
“I thought we were waiting for your military backup?”
“We are!”
“Even if they come, how are we gonna stop this?” Mike pointed out. “You can’t just shoot it with guns.”
“You don’t know that! We don’t know anything!”
“We know it’s already killed everybody in that lab!”
Lucas cut in. “We know the monsters are gonna molt again.”
Dustin added. “And we know that it’s only a matter of time before those tunnels reach this town.”
“They’re right.”
Everyone turned to the weak voice belonging to Joyce, who had exited her room and was now slowly approaching them. She was still in her scrubs, she looked exhausted with her red and puffy eyes. “We have to kill it,” She almost whispered as Hopper walked towards her. “I want to kill it.”
“Me, too.”
“I-”
“Me, too, Joyce, okay?” He softly spoke. “But how do we do that? We don’t exactly know what we’re dealing with here.”
“No. But he does.” Mike sounded from where he was walking towards Will. “If anyone knows how to destroy this thing, it’s Will. He’s connected to it. He’ll know its weakness.”
“I thought we couldn’t trust him anymore?” Max sounded unsure. “That he’s a spy for the Mind Flayer now.”
“Yeah, but he can’t spy if he doesn’t know where he is.”
With that, they set out their mission. Hopper made his way outside and opened the door to the Byers shed, content with the space. “Yeah, this’ll work.” He mumbled. Everything within the shed had been thrown out to the side for the time being. They needed the space empty so as to not have Will recognize anything around him.
Afterwards, Nancy and Steve had found themselves alone in the shed as they began stapling a tarp onto the wall. Steve was hard at work, but Nancy couldn’t help the pit forming in her stomach and the guilt weighing on her shoulders.
Ever since the death of Barbara, Nancy had felt immense guilt. She stayed the night at Steve’s and urged Barb to go home so the two could be alone. Had she known what would have happened, she never would have stayed with Steve. Not only had she felt partially responsible for her best friend’s death, she included her own boyfriend in the blame. Not only that, but she couldn’t tell anyone the truth of how Barb really died besides those who already knew.
This put a strain on her relationship with everything spilling over on Halloween when she had drunkenly admitted everything she kept secret to Steve at a party. Including that their relationship was, as she put it, “bullshit”. The last time she had seen him, it wasn’t on great terms.
It also didn’t help that she and Jonathan had been gone together outside of Hawkins for more than one day, more than one night. At first, the trip was solely to get in contact with a conspiracy theorist to help with exposing Hawkins Lab for the death of Barbara. The two of them didn’t mean to rekindle what they had a year ago. But that second night proved that Steve was not who Nancy had feelings for. Ever since returning, she had no chance to speak to him on the matter. That, and she was afraid. But at this point, with the two alone, it was now or never to say something. Anything.
“Hey,” She caught his attention. “What you did, um, helping the kids… that was… really cool.” She smiled.
“Yeah,” Steve nodded, stepping back onto the ladder with the staple gun in his hand. “Those shits are real trouble, you know?”
She chuckled and returned back to her work. “Believe me, I know.”
And just like that, it fell silent once again. There was so much more she wanted to say, but she couldn’t force herself to let it out. Besides, it seemed Steve was completely unbothered about it. She needed to talk to him and apologize, but this was a nice start.
Outside, Dustin and Lucas emptied the family’s trash can, beginning to dig through it for anything they could cover the walls with. They worked in silence for a bit before Dustin decided that there was something he needed to say. “Hey,” He quietly called, gaining Lucas’s attention. “I’m… I’m sorry about Dart and all. I guess I just thought that he was my friend. I was wrong,” His voice started to wobble as he continued. “I bro- I broke the rule of law, so, I mean, if you want- if you want your girlfriend to… to take over my spot in the Party, I-I understand.”
Lucas pinched the bridge of his nose. “She’s not my girlfriend.”
“I saw you two holding hands in the bus, Lucas.”
“She was just scared.”
“Maybe. But I could feel it.”
“Feel what?”
“The electricity.” He picked up a great pile of newspapers and walked away, leaving Lucas alone to deeply contemplate whatever he had, or could have, with Max.
Said girl was inside the house, taping pieces of cardboard together as she watched Mike rifle through the cupboard under the kitchen sink, pulling out a jug of ammonia cleaner and setting it beside him before going back to searching.
“I get why El was your mage now. Why (Y/N) is your sorceress.”
Mike turned to her. “What?”
“Lucas. He told me all about them.”
“Yeah, well, he shouldn’t have.” He harshly spoke. “And just because you know the truth, it doesn’t mean you’re in our Party. You do know that, right?”
Max swallowed. After all she had been through with them, she was almost certain she was deemed one of them now. But it seemed it took a bit more than experience to win over Mike Wheeler. “Yeah, I know.”
Mike took his eyes away from her and went back to the cupboard.
“I mean, why would you want a stupid zoomer in your Party, anyway?” She lightly joked, watching Mike send her a very quick look over his shoulder. “I’m just saying, El? She sounds like she was really awesome.”
“Yeah, she was,” He agreed before shutting the cupboard and collecting the supplies in his arms. “Until that thing took her. Just like it took Bob. And I’m not letting it take my sister, if it hasn’t already.” He stood and walked out of the kitchen, leaving Max alone.
Once enough materials and supplies had been gathered, everyone worked together in the shed to conceal every last inch of the walls to keep Will from knowing where he was, even going as far as to cover the chair he would be sitting in. Afterwards, Jonathan carried his brother inside and placed his slumped figure in the chair. Hopper used their clothesline that was cut to tie Will up in the chair, just in case he lashed out.
Off to the side, Joyce readied the syringe with the anesthesia as Mike duct taped big lights onto a stand, Lucas plugging them all in. The lights were almost blinding when they turned on, shining down on the unconscious Byers boy. Hopper sighed and turned to Joyce.
“Alright, you ready?”
“Yeah.”
Hopper gently shook the container of ammonia as he came up to Will and knelt in front of him. He dumped a bit of the substance on a cotton ball and held it up to his nose. In the next second, Will shot up, his now deep brown eyes still dark even in the light.
In the house, Dustin paced, taking his signature hat off to nervously run his hair through his curls. He passed by Nancy, who silently leaned against the wall. She could hear something swiping through the air and turned her head to Steve, who was practicing with his bat in the living room. Outside the room, in the hallway, sat Max and Lucas across from each other.
“If he finds out where we are,” Max started. “...will he send those dogs after us?”
“He won’t find out.” Lucas reassured her.
She sighed out anxiously. “Yeah, but, if he does…”
“Judgement day.”
-------------------------------------------------
Will’s eyes, that were much lighter days ago, blinked against the light as he looked around. All he could see were four figures staring at him. He hardly recognized them, only the woman. Very vaguely, though. He grunted when he tried to move, his bindings stopping him from doing so. “What?” He frantically looked around. “What? What is this?”
They watched as he became more agitated. “What? What is this?” He thrashed harder. “Why am I tied up?”
Joyce knelt down in front of him. “Will,” She gently spoke. “We just wanna talk to you. We’re not gonna hurt you.”
He ignored her, looking up at the rest of them. “Where am I?”
Hopper joined his side, holding up his drawing of the Mind Flayer. “You recognize this? Do you recognize this?”
Will shook his head and averted his gaze with no emotion.
“Hey,” Joyce quietly called. “We wanna help you. But to do that, we have to understand how to kill it.”
“Why am I tied up?!” His sudden increase in volume caused Joyce to move back a bit. “Why am I tied up?! Why am I tied up! Why am I tied up!”
Hopper placed his hands on Will’s shoulders to keep him from moving too much, the lights in front of him flickering as he violently thrashed in Hopper’s hold.
“Why am I tied up?! Why am I tied up?! Let me go! Let me go! Let me go!!! Let me go!”
His voice became distorted in pitch the louder and harder he screamed. In the house, the lights flickered as well, alerting everyone inside. Inside the shed, Joyce stared down as she tried to contain her sobs at the sight of her son losing control of his body.
“Let me go! Let me go! Let me go!” He continued to scream as Hopper enveloped him in his arms, forcefully keeping him from lunging forwards to Joyce. “Let me go! Let me go! Let me go! Let me go! Let me go! Let me go! Let me go. Let me go… Go…”
Hopper let go of him when his movements ceased and the flickering stopped.
“Go…”
Joyce inhaled deeply before taking a seat in the disguised chair across from him. She looked her son in his wide, unfamiliar eyes for a moment before a very small smile made its way onto her face. “Do you know what March 22nd is?”
No response.
“It’s your birthday. Your birthday. When you turned eight, I gave you that huge box of crayons. Do you remember that?” She proudly smiled. “It was 120 colors. And all your friends, they got you Star Wars toys, but all you wanted to do was draw with all your new colors. And you drew this big spaceship, but it wasn’t from a movie. It w- It was your spaceship. A rainbow ship is what you called it.”
Will’s eyes widened.
“And you must have used every color in the box. I… I took that with me to Melvald’s and I put it up and I told everyone who came in, ‘My son drew this’.”
His lips parted.
“And you were so embarrassed.” Joyce chuckled. “But I was so proud. I was so, so proud.”
A shaky breath left Jonathan’s lips. “Do you remember the day Dad left?” He walked over and knelt beside his mother, Will’s eyes watching his every movement. “We stayed up all night building Castle Byers…”
One side of Will’s lips quirked up ever so slightly.
“...just the way you drew it. And it took so long because you were so bad at hammering,” He and Joyce softly chuckled. “You’d miss the nail every time.”
Will’s lips trembled as the side of his lips quirked higher.
“And then it started raining, but we stayed out there, anyway. We were both sick for, like, a week after that. But we just had to finish it, didn’t we?”
He was fully smiling on one side of his mouth as his fingers shook beside one of the chair legs.
“We just had to.”
“Do you remember the first day that we met?”
His smile fell as he whipped his head up to Mike, who already had a tear falling down his cheek. He swallowed to move the lump in his throat out of the way of his words. “It was… It was the first day of kindergarten. I knew nobody. We hadn’t met Doc yet, so I had no friends and…” He sniffled as more tears fell. “I just felt so alone and so scared, but… I saw you on the swings and you were alone, too.”
Will’s eyebrows twitched, as if he were fighting to make a facial reaction.
“You were just swinging by yourself. And I just walked up to you and… I asked. I asked if you wanted to be my friend. And you said yes. You said yes,” Mike fought off more tears. “It was the best thing I’ve ever done.”
His half-smile had returned, but it was filled more with sadness than anything. His eyes were filled with everything but tears and he seemed as though he wanted to react so badly, but all he could provide were subtle face twitches.
“Will, baby…” Joyce got his attention again. “...if you’re in there, just please… please, talk to us. Please, honey, please, can you do that for me?”
Will’s entire face scrunched up as if he were going to sob, his breathing shaky.
“Please. I love you so much.”
But he had lost the fight. Any emotion etched into his features was erased when he returned to his blank stare. Their progress was gone.
“Let me go.”
Joyce deflated almost in defeat and shook her head. Off to the side, Hopper turned his attention back to the scene, his brows furrowing at the sight of Will’s hand tapping the chair leg. It was some sort of code. He was communicating.
The four returned to the house quickly. Hopper picked up a piece of paper and headed to the kitchen table, where everyone gathered.
“What happened?” Dustin asked as Hopper began writing.
“I think he’s talking, just not with words.”
Steve confusedly stared at the dashes and dots Hopper drew. “What is that?”
“Morse code.” Everyone answered as he decoded the message.
“H-E-R-E.”
“Here.”
Hopper sighed out and set his pen down. “Will’s still in there. He’s talking to us.”
And with that, Jonathan grabbed his stereo and cassette tape.
-------------------------------------------------
Jonathan sat in front of his brother with a determined look as “Should I Stay Or Should I Go?” played behind him. “Do you remember the first time I played you this? Mom and Dad were both arguing in the next room. So, I played you the mixtape I made you. And it was the first time you got into music. Real music.”
Hopper watched from the side as Will’s hand tapped a code onto the chair leg. Behind his back was the clicker he used for the people in the house to decode. Dustin sat at the kitchen table, writing the code as it came to them.
“Dash, dot, dash, dot.”
Lucas looked through the morse code alphabet. “Okay, I got it. C.”
And on a piece of cardboard, Nancy wrote down the message.
Now, Mike sat in front of Will, excitedly recalling one of their D&D campaigns. “And then the party escaped into the sewers, and there were those big insect things, and you guys were still on level one.”
Dot, dash, dot, dot. L
Dash, dash, dash. O.
“Then you cast Fog Cloud and you saved us. You saved the whole Party.”
Dot, dot, dot. S.
With a warm smile, Mike recalled another fond memory. “I remember when you gave (Y/N) your tonka truck for her first birthday with us,” He shook his head as his smile grew. “She was so happy, she wouldn’t stop talking about it for days.”
Dot. E.
Joyce then took Mike’s place. “I remember I told you that we couldn’t afford another Tonka Truck if you gave yours to (Y/N).”
Dash, dash, dot. G.
“You said she should have it because it was her birthday. ‘It’s for her birthday, Mommy. I love it, and she’s gonna love it, too’.”
Dot, dash. A.
“I love you so much.”
Dash. T
“So, so much.”
Dot. E.
The group in the house gathered around Nancy to read the message decoded.
CLOSEGATE
Just then, the telephone rang, startling everyone. Dustin cursed as they rushed to the phone, the Henderson boy picking it up and then harshly hanging it up. The house fell silent for a couple seconds before the ringing started again. This time, Nancy grabbed the phone and ripped it from the wall, throwing it to the ground.
“Do you think he heard that?” Max asked.
“It’s just a phone,” Steve shrugged. “It could be anywhere. Right?”
Unbeknownst to them, Will’s eyelids had fluttered shut, his eyeballs moving crazily behind them. Joyce placed a hand on his knee. “Hey. Hey, can you hear me?” She asked, but was only met with Will’s heavy breathing. It became heavier and faster the longer he stayed that way. Hopper slowly crouched beside him.
“It knows. It knows where we are.”
“Oh, shit.” Joyce whispered as she made her way to the syringe. With less regret than she felt before, she stuck the needle into Will’s arm and watched as he slumped in his seat, unmoving. Hopper, Jonathan and Mike stepped outside in search of the Demodogs, but none were in sight.
But their screeching was in earshot. With a start, they ran back into the shed and instantly started untying Will. Joyce didn’t even question it and dropped down to help them. After he was freed, Jonathan hoisted his brother into his arms and ran back to the house with Joyce and Mike following. Hopper was right behind them, but remembered that they were unarmed. They had nothing but the gun he used at the lab.
And the shotgun from the shed.
Spinning around, Hopper retrieved the gun from the pile of possessions and darted to the house. Once inside, he shut the backdoor behind him and marched through the house, swiftly picking up his gun into his other hand as he made his way into the living room. “Hey. Hey, get away from the windows!”
The kids quickly did as they were told and ran to where Joyce and the teens were standing. Hopper held the shotgun up to Jonathan. “Do you know how to use this?”
“What?”
“Can you use this?”
“U-Um-”
Nancy stepped forward. “I can.”
Without question, Hopper threw the gun to her. As a unit, the team stood together, either wielding some sort of weapon or standing their ground, they were ready for a fight. Their hearts beat rapidly as one as their eyes stayed focused on the front windows. The Demodogs’ screeching could be heard in the distance. They were close, they could tell from a growl that sounded nearer to the house.
Everyone whipped to the right towards the dining room window at the loud thud from outside. “What are they doing?” Nancy shakily asked. She was met with no responses. None of them could have known whatever was occurring outside those windows, and they weren’t sure if they even wanted to know, so they all remained silent and held their breath.
A snarl directed them back to the front window. Whatever was happening, the Demodogs were fighting something. Or someone. And by the sound of their groans and screeches, they were losing. The screeching came to an abrupt stop, and the team had no choice but to wait with baited breath for what was next. In any case, they were prepared. Maybe not heavily prepared, but prepared nonetheless.
A chorus of curses and yells could be heard when a Demodog crashed through the window and slid across the living room floor, motionless. Everyone with a weapon held it up towards the monster, but it was still unmoving. Hopper inched closer and closer to it with careful steps. He, along with everyone on the front lines, jumped almost three feet in the air when the monster suddenly exploded, sending its flesh sticking to the walls and furniture.
“Oh, shit!” Dustin squealed.
“What the hell?!” Max exclaimed. The group stood in stunned silence at what had just happened. There couldn’t have been any explanation with their limited knowledge on how a Demodog spontaneously exploding was even possible. But even then, with part of the threat eliminated, they released a breath of relief.
Suddenly, all eyes were on the front door at the sound of a creak. The top lock clicked into its unlocked position, causing everyone to hold up their weapons again. The chain lock slid and popped on its own before the door slowly creaked open. Following it inside was a pair of white Converses stepping into the house, leading in a pair of black and red rollerskates.
Weapons were lowered, faces fell, and hearts swelled at the sight of Eleven and Doc standing before them all, hands clasped together. El’s nose ran with blood and Doc’s arms were painted with black veins, fingertips smudged black. Everyone’s thoughts ran less with why they were dressed in grunge and more with if they were the cause of the exploding Demodog, where they had been, how they reunited in the first place. All in all, they were amazed to see them. El, more specifically.
Especially Mike.
The boy stepped forward, eyes wide and glossy with tears. El’s face warmed in temperature and in expression when she set her sights on him. He had grown in the past year, no doubt, but so had she. Even so, the two couldn’t have seen any difference in each other. She was still the same girl he had found in the rain, and he was still the same boy she stumbled upon. There were no words needed to be spoken for now. Just the sweet, pure smiles exchanged between them was enough for now.
From where Doc stood beside El, she could see the faces of her friends, her family, standing before them in awe. There was much to explain, so many apologies to trade, but for now, she just wanted to take this in. She knew, here and now, that this band of friends and family members was her home.
Her true home.
And nothing was going to take that away.

Some notes that come to my mind as I watch Season 2, episode 3 of Stranger Things (YEs, this would be the equivalent of tweeting live watch, but in just one post)
Jim Hooper is VERY out of his depth. I get him trying to reassure El, but on one hand, BAD idea to lie, even white lie, to a girl whose only socialization after thirteen years or so is the phrase "Friends don't lie" and can make Carrie White look like a parlor trick magician. On the other, not explaining to El that he was late because of probable Upside down shenanigans? Good to protect her of a REAL danger, Bad to give his case. And also, uhm, he knows that Mike, Will, Dustin and Lucas CAN keep El a secret. He saw them ride literal circles around the goverment Shop guys (I know they're not the Shop... but they act like the Shop, they quack like the Shop, they are as stupid as the Shop) so why not trust them a bit?
El of course got her teenage rebellion runaway mood going on. Because come on, El was going to run away. She absolutely tasted freedom in season 1, she was not going to stay locked up in a cabin in the woods forever. Plus, now that she has hair? She looks completely different from before. People wouldn't think much about "Jim Hopper's niece", not even if he is still working with the idiot Shop. OTOH, Why absolutely NO ONE ever tries to teach her how to act normally ? She calls attention to herself precisely because she doesn't know how to talk to people.
Dustin being equally smart (because he started researching wtf was hiding in his trashcan) and stupid (Because he feed it the ONE THING we know is really toxic to a lot of animals and then invited Max to see something that OBVIOUSLY came from the Upside down when Max has no idea of it) is... very sweet in a "teenagers will be teenagers" way. OTOH, not realizing that Dart is OBVIOUSLY from the Upside Down, is a mayor fail on Dustin. I get why Will didn't tell him "Oh, I puked him up", but still, it is an obvious alien thing.
Of course he'd tell Mike. But well, then Will has no taste.
Max has the patience of a saint. But then she has to have it if she's related to Bill.
Bob is equally sweet and while his advice is not that good for Will since... uhm... well, Big Nightmare Clown is not the same as what Will experienced -unless his Big Nightmare Clown was named Pennywise and now I weep that Sean Astin didn't have a chance to be a character in It- at least he is TRYING to treat Will normally which is far, far more than everyone else is doing... and of course his advice ended up backfiring because, well, Will wasn't having NIGHTMARES.
Jonathan has fell SO down on my list of liked characters, he's sitting in the fort with Mike. I would get him angry that his mom is dating a perfectly absolute great guy if his father was a) dead, or b) had been a perfectly absolute great guy. But we have established he hates his dad. So why the hell is he mad his mom has a chance to happiness? It's not as if he read the script and he knows Bob will die and break Joyce's heart!
On other hand... wow, Steve really matured in the year between Season 1 and 2. And he called out Nancy on her secret threesome because wow, she was so entitled "where were you?" so Steve is apparently her driver? So good for Steve to actually step out of something that is bad for him. I understand Nancy complaining that she was drunk and thus he shouldn't take what she said seriously... but then she didn't contradict anything of what she said while drunk so... yeah. No Nancy, you want everything? You need to communicate. While on the other hand, Jonathan absolutely thinks they're a trio and just didn't thought of mentioning it to Nancy or Steve either. This really doesn't work.
Nancy is an IDIOT. Like, she KNOWS her phoneline is intervened. She SAW them do it in a montage. I mean, I love her gumption when it comes to hit things with more teeth than the Osmond's family, but she is an idiot when it comes to common sense. Then again, her brother is also an idiot. Him treating Max like trash just because he misses El is not fair. And why the hell El reacts like a jealous girlfriend? That was the worst narrative choice ever for everyone.
Joyce should take a second job as a private detective. She's REALLY good at it. Of course, she's also a total Mama Bear. And the first one who sees that there's something going on with Will more than what everyone is telling her, because of course. How long before everyone calls her crazy? 10 minutes? (I have to say, Winnona Ryder? KILLS the role). Oh, wow, i was right. It took us 10 minutes to see someone rolling her eyes at her. At least it was not one of the main characters.
Oh, that line of Mike saying "That's like saying if someone is from the Death Star they're not necessarily evil" hits really funny since... in OUR timeline, in 2015, two years before? We got Finn. And a bunch of other non-evil Storm troopers in the comics. And well, by THEIR timeline, they ALREADY had Return of the Jedi, where we see that Darth Vader was, in fact, not evil. So yeah, Mike... You don't get to say that someone is evil just because they were born in a very ugly dimension. And while Dart might be dangerous, Mike's reaction to it is not a good one. Especially when the show shows us that yes, Dart DOES trust Dustin, as he's the one kid that it doesn't hiss at.
I also finally realized WHY it bugs me so much that Stranger Things is Stephen King's lite. It FEELS like a Stephen King story, it moves like an Stephen King story, the characters CAN be paralleled to a lot of Stephen King's characters (Jim Hooper is Alan Pangborn without the knowledge of magic tricks to ease kids into talking with him, Dustin is right out of the Richie Tozier school of kids who don't know when to shut up for their own sake. Hell, I can play "scenes that come right out of a King book" and write a ten pages or so post with season one alone), but it has NO credit or acknowledge to King from the creators at all. On the other hand, two years later we got a series that was supposedly based on King's works and... felt nothing like a King story. So part of my anger is that Stranger Things is what Castle Rock should've been.
I need to work on that because well, not fair to the series. Even if they did took a TON of "inspiration" from King.

As someone who is selectively mute cause of anxiety I must project
If Jonathan is pushed too far, just too worked up and in his own head, he just completely stops talking. Even if he wanted to, he can’t make himself. It’s a mechanism derived from Lonnie always yelling at him for being too quiet or talking back too much when defending his mom or Will.
He’s always been a quiet person, never really being the one to carry a conversation. But it’s noticeable when he’s completely silent.
Over the years, he’s gotten a lot better with being able to control if he gets that bad. But sometimes it’s just triggered by something. In the heat of the moment, maybe someone shouts at him directly in his face. Hopper, Maybe even Joyce or Nancy losing her cool. But it sends him into panic overdrive. His eyes shift to the floor, he hunches over and looks like he’s struggling to talk or respond.
Jonathan has so much trauma from Lonnie. But yes, after awhile, he can just shut down. Lonnie would hit and scream at him for not defending himself, but then do the same when he defended his mom or Will. His voice meant nothing and his body was a shield for his little brother. So after awhile, he just stopped talking.
He doesn't do it too much these days, he's always quiet, especially after everything that happened with Will, but he forces himself to not shut down. He can't afford to and when he goes completely silent, it worries Will to no ends. Though, he did have constant panic attacks when he was alone.
But when the entire Vecna situation is going down, Jonathan uses himself to protect Hopper and almost dies. Maybe it's against a demogorgon, or one of the dogs, but he tackles it away from Hopper and had it not been for Nancy shooting it, he would have easily been killed. Hopper yanks him away from the danger quickly, but doesn't say anything.
Later, Hopper blows up at him when they get home. At first he's quiet, saying "you almost died" and when Jonathan says nothing Hopper just explodes. He's worried and stress and fuck his kid almost died for him and he just screams, not realizing how close Jonathan is to him until it's too late "what the hell were you thinking?"
He snaps it as he spins around only to see he's right in Jonathan's face. And Jonathan freezes. He looks like he's trying to speak, but can't. He stares at the floor, hunched over like he's preparing for a hit. Hopper stops immediately.
"Jonathan, kid, look at me, you're okay." But Jonathan can't. He physically can't. Words can't come out and he can't look at Hopper. He looks like he can barely breathe for God's sake. And Jim knows he's fucked up so he just pulls Jonathan into a hug and keeps a hold of him until his shoulders relax. And he says he thought he lost Jonathan for a minute there. He didn't mean to yell, he shouldn't have, but he was just scared. He loves his kids and he can't stand the concept of losing one of them. Not again. He basically tells Jonathan he can't afford the pain of burying another one of his children.
Jonathan starts to be able to talk again, but there's a lot of stuttering and crying because he's still processing the fact Hopper didn't hit him. Lonnie would have. But Hopper isn't Lonnie. And he relaxes and cries against his dad's chest because he just wants this to be over already and he wants to feel safe and he doesn't want to lose anyone else to this war.
Jim never raises his voice to any of his kids after that.

How and where do you think Hopper would propose? Or do you think Joyce would be the one to propose?
ohhhh man I love this okay I could see it a few different ways...
Option 1:
Joyce doesn't know why he hasn't proposed. They're basically living together, they're raising their kids together, but he doesn't seem to be making any moves towards anything. Christmas...New Year's...Valentine's Day...anniversary...birthdays...all go by with nothing. And so she one day just gets annoyed and says "Why haven't you asked me to marry you?" and he just looks at her like "Why do you want to get married?" like it hasn't even crossed his mind. And then they have a big fight where they yell a lot about how marriage wasn't good for either of them but they're a family but but but and he just ends it with "FINE LET'S GET MARRIED GOD DAMMIT!" and El and Will overhear and immediately start wedding planning.
Option 2:
It's about a year after they save Hawkins and they've made a life together and he knows it's time. And he's agonizing about it and wants to plan out this whole thing and wants it to be perfect but in typical Jim Hopper fashion, it all goes to hell and he's embarrassed and awkward and frustrated and Joyce is just kinda giggling but also feels bad for him because he's obviously disappointed but he's trying so hard and it's so cute! They're out to a fancy dinner and he pulls out the ring box and fumbles over his speech and ends up dropping the ring in the butter dish, and Joyce fishes it out and slips it on her own finger and just says "Yes!" and then leans over and kisses him and he looks at her all goofy and adorable.
Option 3:
Hopper gets the kids involved to help plan a big surprise. Not just Jonathan and Will and El. All the kids. Mike and Lucas and Max and Dustin and Nancy and Steve. Everyone gets involved and makes magic. Like something amazing and out of this world and blows her entire mind. Think Luke and Lorelai's wedding at the end of Fall in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Just weird and cute and romantic and perfect. And at the end of this strange (ha) thing, Hopper is there in a suit that he feels super awkward in, but Joyce is there with her sweet little face all amazed and then he gently and sweetly asks her to marry him, and she cries and says yes and they kiss <3

                            Everything You Hold Dear
Summary: For the first time in awhile, blissful rest had finally found Jim Hopper. He laid there, lost in his dreams. It was only when the panicked shouting of his wife ruthlessly yanked him out from the darkness and into the cold light that he realized a new, living nightmare had only just begun. "Hopper, where's Will?!"
(AU that follows the story if Jopper was canon prior to 1x01 and how that would completely change the canonical story we know).
Rating: T
Ship: Joyce/Hopper (Jopper)
Read on: FFN and AO3
A/N: So this is my first attempt at a Stranger Things fanfic. Basically, this is an AU where Jopper has been canon since 1x01 making him the biological father of both Will and Jonathan and how this alters the canon verse as we know it. I thought about incorporating Sara into the story, but it didn't work out the way I would've liked so she never existed. Oh yes, I decided to continue to have Joyce called Hopper "Hopper" because I like it like that haha. Alrighty, enough of my chatter, here we go! Comments, hearts, and reblogs are greatly loved and appreciated. If you wished to be tagged for future updates, please let me know! -Jen
                                                Chapter One
Jim Hopper ignored the numbness that came with the bitter cold morning as he stood on his back porch overlooking the lake. He was on his second cigarette, the first crushed and forgotten on the railing. Later, he'd try to remind himself, to toss it away inside. For now, the chief of police sought comfort in the remaining precious minutes before the sun rose over the horizon.
It had been a rough night, not that sleep often came easy. Another dream, another nightmare from the war that mentally he wondered if he'd ever come back home from. The doctors said it was post traumatic stress disorder, that he wasn't alone in this suffering. That he should reach out, seek help. But he sure as hell wouldn't dare to ever drag Joyce down with him. She didn't need to know what he saw. What he did. He loved her too much to subject her to such horrors. Even though she practically begged him time and time again to open up. He wouldn't do that to her. Ever.
Tapping on his cigarette, he inhaled deeply. Soon both kids would be up wanting breakfast and despite the fact that he would be leaving for work well before both Jonathan and Joyce, he'd designated Sundays as his day to cook. Waffles-or "Willfles" as Will had so proudly dubbed them when he was learning to talk. Something that now only embarrassed his pre-teen son.
The thought caused the corners of his mouth to twitch upwards into a small smile. He was lucky and realized that. A wife and two sons, something he made sure he'd never take for granted. All the pain, the bad dreams, they made everything worth it. They were the light at the end of a dark tunnel, a rope that pulled him out of the deepest of holes. He loved them so much it hurt, but that in itself was a good kind of pain. The best pain. One that he was more than willing to endure.
"Hop?"
The sound of Joyce's voice snapped Hopper out of his trance. He turned to find his wife standing in the open doorway, slipper-less and wearing the old, purple bathrobe he'd gotten her last Christmas. A look of concern was etched across her features as she studied him.
"Hey." He greeted, clearing his throat as he put out the cigarette. "What are you doing out here?"
"I could ask you the same." Joyce responded, stepping out onto the deck. "I woke up and you weren't in bed. I was worried." Hugging her arms around her chest, she made her way to her husband's side. "Are you okay?"
"Couldn't sleep." That really was the truth. "So I came out here for a smoke. Nice weather for it." That wasn't.
"Hopper…"
"I'm fine. Really." Hopper could feel Joyce's stare burning into him. She could read him like a book-something he could never decide if he loved or hated. "Stop looking at me like that. Keep it up and your mind will be so focused on me it'll forget how to regulate temperature. You'll get hypothermia."
His wife snorted softly. "And this information is coming from…"
"Ms. Ratliff," he shrugged, trying to hide his smile. "Or I could've heard wrong. You know I've always hated science."
"Clearly."
Silence fell between them as the sun began to barely peek over the skyline. Hopper's arm wound around Joyce's waist as he pulled her closer. Decades they'd known each other. Since childhood. And yet, it didn't feel like it had been that long. The older they got, time seemed to blur with each passing day. She was his person and he was her's.
"You know you can always talk to me right? About anything?" There was a hint of desperation in her tone. A sense of pleading he wouldn't allow himself to give in to. "There's nothing you can say that'll change how I feel or whatever you're so worried about that might happen. Hopper, I-"
"I know that, Joyce." He interrupted, cutting her off before she could finish. "I'm fine. I promise."
Joyce let out a sigh of defeat and Hopper felt a small pang of guilt over her distress. He despised putting a wedge like this between them. Creating distance. Attempting to move past the subject, he pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
"Hey, sun's coming up and I was thinking about maybe going all out for breakfast? Eggs, bacon, maybe some of that fruit we've had crammed in the back of the fridge that's about to go bad? …Willfles?"
If smiles could light up a room then hers could illuminate a mansion. One of the many, many things he adored about her. "Will you wear the apron?" Hopper's eyes narrowed, his frown only making her grin grow. "C'mon, for me?"
The infamous yellow and pink floral apron. Something their household had acquired during the police station's annual Christmas party. It had been an anonymous gift exchange, but something about the way Flo was smiling when he first set his eyes on it made it easy to put two and two together. As if he already hadn't had enough mockery to deal with that night from the ugly Christmas sweater his wife had coaxed him into.
"I'm gonna get rid of that thing one of these days." He grumbled, ushering her back inside before closing the door behind them. "When you aren't here to rescue it."
"Then I'll just get a new one." Joyce stated bluntly with a shrug. "Maybe I'll ask Karen where she got hers." Smirking softly, she poked his chest with her index finger. "Magenta has always suited you, and that checkered pattern…"
Joyce's words were cut short as Hopper pulled her in for a kiss, officially putting an end to the apron decision. She giggled and again he couldn't help but smile. The thoughts that had previously plagued him had begun to slip back into the shadows. He wanted nothing more to melt into their embrace, fingers curled in her messy bed hair. His eyes closed and the idea of pulling her back into their bedroom and collapsing onto their mattress sounded better than a winning lottery ticket.
"Just so you know, I'm right here."
Hopper and Joyce turned to see their eldest son standing a few feet away from them. Jonathan, still clearly half asleep, watched them bleary eyed. Throwing Joyce a small smirk, he made his way towards the kitchen giving his kid a quick pat on the shoulder as he went.
"You're up early." He commented, going to start a pot of coffee. "I thought you'd sleep in a bit longer since you don't have to be out the door at the crack of dawn. Thought I'd make some breakfast and get you up after."
Jonathan shrugged and he shuffled in after Joyce. "I woke up and couldn't fall back asleep."
"Seems to be a common problem in this family," his mother replied. "It's beautiful outside today. Maybe you could take some pictures before you go to work. I've been meaning to update the ones I have at work. You know how much people like to see them. I get so many compliments. And there is always your dad's office. Right, Hopper?"
"Hm?" He hadn't exactly been paying attention to what was being said but whatever it was, Joyce was giving him that look so nodded in agreement. "Yeah, kid. Sure."
Growing up, Hopper's relationship with his own father was strained. They never really connected on any sort of level, not that either party put any effort into it. That was one of the many reasons he promised himself he'd be a better parent even before the subject of kids was broached between him and Joyce. Something that he had learned early on wasn't always a walk in the park.
Fishing around the fridge for what he needed, Hopper began the task of cooking for his family. He could feel Joyce's eyes following him as she sipped contently from her mug.
"Like what you see?" He asked, not looking up from the eggs he was scrambling.
"A free show with a complimentary meal isn't something to complain about, that's for sure." She placed her cup on the counter. "Are you sure you don't need a sous chef?"
"And be even more distracted by you?" He snorted, throwing her a side glance. "Not a chance." Setting the eggs off of the side, Hopper paused. "But I guess it wouldn't hurt to enlist some help with the waffle batter. Got any references?"
"Does my husband count?" She asked, feigning innocence.
Hopper pretended to hesitate. "Guess if I have to…" Grabbing a spoon, he held it out to Joyce. "Don't make me fire you." His wife rolled her eyes and he gave her a lopsided grin. "The floor is yours."
With two people in the kitchen, the prepping time lessened and soon enough a skillet full of eggs, a tray of crispy bacon, a bowl of fruit, and a steaming heap of waffles were sprawled out across the counter. Hopper exhaled, wiping his sweaty brow with the back of his hand. It looked good enough. Hopefully it would taste the same too.
"Jonathan, go wake your brother up." Joyce called out as the teenager rose up from his spot on the couch. "Tell him it's time for breakfast."
Hopper's eyes followed his son as he sauntered out of sight. When Jonathan turned of age to get a job, he'd been glad. The kid had always been a loner, far more interested in spending his time doing photography than enjoying the company of others. He'd hoped with his new gig that maybe he'd make some friends. People other than Will. Not that there was anything wrong with their tight bond. He and Joyce after all wanted to make sure they didn't have just one child as they both had been only children. But that wish of Jonathan finally being in with a group of his peers fell through. And while it didn't seem to concern his wife so much, he did for him a lot.
"You think maybe we should've waited to let him get a job?" He asked once he was sure Jonathan was out of earshot. "I've just been thinking maybe we get him involved with something else."
"Like sports?" Joyce frowned as she grabbed a stack of plates. "Hopper, we've talked about this. We aren't going to force either of the boys into something they don't want to do. Besides," she glanced towards the doorway. "He doesn't seem unhappy at all. He likes working at the movie theater. It's good for him."
"I know. I just…all I'm trying to get at is I want what's good for him. Both of them." Hopper turned back to the food in an attempt to busy himself.
"They're good kids," Joyce assured him, resting a hand on his arm. "We've raised them well."
Hopper shrugged and turned towards her. "Gotta give most of the credit to you in that department. Your parenting instincts kicked in before Jonathan was even born."
As if on cue, Jonathan entered the room once more only now joined by Will. Hopper watched as his son's eyes lit up as he took in the spread before him. Despite being skinner than a twig, the boy had a bottomless stomach with an appetite to boot.
"Mm, good morning." Joyce smiled, pulling Will into a tight hug. You sleep okay? Dad made Willfles."
Will made a face, his expression of irritation only deepening as Jonathan chuckled from behind. "Can we just call them waffles? I'm not a little kid anymore."
"But it's just so sweet," his mother replied. "I love Willfles."
"Well I don't." He responded.
"Okay, okay, we hear you." Hopper said, grabbing a spatula. "...So I guess that means you don't want any?"
There was no hesitation as Will quickly snatched up a plate. Hopper smiled, throwing his wife a triumphant look as he placed a waffle on the kid's plate.
Once they had all filled their plates, the family of four gathered around their small dining room table. Hopper took a large swig of his coffee and glanced down at yesterday's newspaper he had left haphazardly folded before him. Hawkins' news always proved to be boring. Nothing ever exciting or out of the ordinary making its way into the quiet town. It made his job as the chief of police easy.
"Mike said his mom said it was okay if Dustin, Lucas, and I came over to play D&D today." Will said, looking from Joyce to Hopper. "Can I go?"
"Did you finish your homework?" Hopper asked, stabbing his fork into his eggs.
It was a ridiculous question he already knew the answer to. Will definitely didn't inherit his focus on academics from him. When it came to his youngest, Hopper often found himself struggling to connect with the boy on many levels. Will was…different. Different in a good way. A wonderful way. But still he found it hard to level with him. He tried though. Tried to be there in the best way he could. Attempted to learn the ways of this fantasy board game his son loved. Expressed interest in the kid's art. Yet still he felt like he was somehow failing him. That he wasn't being there as much as he should be. Joyce relentlessly assured him that he was a good father. A good man. But deep down he doubted her words.
"I finished it all on Friday," Will replied, pulling Hopper out of his thoughts. "So, can I go?"
Hopper glanced over at his wife who nodded. "Alright, ride your bike over there and when I get off from work, I'll come pick you up and we can throw it into the back of my truck. But when it's time to go, I want you to be ready." He took another sip of coffee before clearing his throat. "I don't want his mom trying to set up me and his dad on a playdate." Not that Ted was much of a talker anyway. "Okay?"
"Hopper."
The disapproval in Joyce's tone made it clear that she found his choice of words undesirable. He gave her a small shrug before returning to his meal.
"Okay!" Will agreed, more than happy to abide by his father's terms and conditions. "I won't make you wait."
The boy began to shovel down his food so fast that Hopper began to worry he'd choke on something. Chugging down his orange juice, Will haphazardly grabbed his dirty dishes and hurried to the sink.
"Hey, slow down before you trip and hurt yourself!" The chief called out after his kid. "Were you planning to say goodbye?"
Will shuffled back over and soon found himself pulled into Joyce's tight embrace.
"Mom, let go! It isn't like you're not going to see me again." Will protested, trying to wiggle out of his mother's arms. "I can't breathe!"
"I'm sorry," Joyce sighed, pulling back. Holding him out at arms length she smiled. "You're just growing up so fast. Soon you'll be driving a car just like Jonathan."
"Maybe you can work at the theater too." His brother replied. "We can carpool."
Hopper opened his mouth to join in on the conversation when the telephone rang behind him. Sharing a look with Joyce, he stood up and walked over to it and answered.
"Hello?"
"Chief, it's Flo." The station's secretary sounded flat on the other end. "Sorry if I interrupted anything, but you are needed downtown at the intersection of Main and Mulberry? We've got a fender bender. Accident's not bad but the drivers are worked up. Callahan and Powell just got might want to get here quickly."
He grimaced at her words already feeling a headache coming on. "Yeah, alright. Just give me fifteen minutes. I'll head on out."
"Great, I'll radio in and let them know," Flo replied. "Oh, and give Joyce my best."
"Is everything okay?" Joyce asked as he hung the phone back up. "Is anyone hurt?"
"Nah," Hopper exhaled, abandoning his breakfast as he retrieved his hat and jacket. "Just two idiots who don't know how to drive." He walked over and gave her a kiss. "Real concern is a fight breaking out. Oh and Flo says hi."
"They're lucky to have you, Hop." His wife smiled, pulling him in for another kiss much to their boys' dismay. "Since we all have different schedules tonight, there's lasagne in the fridge if anyone wants to heat that up for dinner. We really need to finish it off."
"Sounds good." Turning to Jonathan, he placed a hand on his shoulder and gave him a squeeze. "Have a good day at work, kid. Feel free to bring your old man home any leftover popcorn you have lying around. Stuff's addicting." And probably artery clogging too. Hopper walked over to Will and pulled his youngest into a side hug. "You have fun with the boys. I'll pick you up later, alright?"
Will smiled up at him and nodded. "Okay."
Grabbing his keys from where they were laying in a dish on the counter, he met his wife's gaze once more. Her features were soft and he found himself transfixed by those deep brown eyes he'd loved since those many, many years ago they'd met. Joyce smiled and mouthed I love you. She didn't even need to talk for him to know what it would've sounded like.
"I love you too." And he met every syllable he said. "I'll see you later."
Throwing one final glance at his family, Hopper made his way to the door and exited the house. The sun, though bright in the sky, still didn't offer much warmth as the chief got into his car. Hopper grunted as he shifted in his seat, finding his seat buckle to click himself in. It was going to be one hell of a long day. He didn't need to feel it. He knew it.
