So as I am wont to do when I enter a new fandom, I looked around and asked myself what resources would be useful to have. Also I need a ton of reference material for my Vash novels WIP. So I'm building a Trigun Reference Library, which will eventually contain timeline, atlas, and reference information (esp plant lore) for all three timelines. (There is some info already there, but I have a lot yet to add.)
But for now, the transcripts section is ready for the public! It still needs work, and I'm collaborating with a small group of volunteers to create the dub transcripts. (If you want to assist in that please let me know, more hands are welcome!) But better to have unformatted transcripts than nothing.
The Transcripts section has a full set of sub-based transcripts for Trigun Stampede, 1998, and Badlands Rumble.
Please reblog to let others know of this resource!

also it's incredibly difficult to talk about the plants because we know so little about the plants - I would love to know what environment a dependent would thrive in. I have written fic about individual dependents theorizing what their experiences are like. but Nightow himself glosses over their individual personhood so much that it's difficult to tell if it even EXISTS

time to be annoying. when one of the most important scenes in your entire manga hinges around a man having built relationships with two groups but you only ever show him in relation to one of those groups, and it's the group using the other as living factories, that weakens the overall message on the value of understanding and communication.
I actually think him calling that plant a brat is in vein with him telling Lina it's not a big deal that adult men touched her butt: a difficulty comforting people who have been unfairly injured because he struggles with the cognitive dissonance his own stance causes him, which is not unique to the stance on plants we're communicated through his on-screen moments.
it's clear Vash has some reverence for his sisters - we see moments of it in all three iterations of trigun. it's also clear that Vash is deeply angry, deeply unhappy, and uncomfortable with people lashing out against their oppressors in ways that might entail violence or harm. it's also clear that no, he is not working to educate humans, better the plight of plants, and build plant-human relationships. when he sees an angry plant, he reacts just as he does to an angry human child has been hurt.

thoughts I am capable of holding my in head at one time:
Knives was right
Knives did not take the most ethical, effective, non-controversial path towards realizing his goals

just saw someone unironically say “Knives was right” for the first time, when I’m pretty sure the entire point (in the manga at least) is that both twins’ points of view are fundamentally flawed - Knives is sympathetic yes, but he still knowingly commits atrocities in an attempt to make the human race suffer for their own collective wrongdoings
#knives#prev literally all of your tags are on point#Vash had no concrete plan and no solid vision for the future. no more than Knives had.#he too is struggling towards an Eden which cannot be realized except! he does so by excusing the horrific enslavement of his own kind#in trimax his terrified sister is a spoiled brat. in tristamp he expends his energy propping up plants without bettering their situation.#Nightow throws a line in at the end talking about him building relationships w plants and humans both but we never see this#if you think of plants only as an allegory and not individuals in their own right who can suffer and be harmed#trigun is an easier pill to swallow from Vash's POV#but if you take them as characters at all. it is much easier to be sympathetic to Knives as a representative of an oppressed species.#and much harder to excuse Vash's do no harm ethos bc it only applies to humans. harm to plants seems to be justified to him.#his brother's bad behaviour is ALL of their bad behaviour so they are all culpable in the end and deserve the harm done to them#yeah Knives commits atrocities - but as prev said it is almost entirely reactive harm. he doesn't lash out mindlessly.#even the harm he does to Vash! is mostly reactionary!#Vash shoots him - he takes his arm. Vash threatens him - he neutralizes him so they can talk.#he's a scared man doing terrible things but he is not an evil cackling madman setting himself up as god and master#he wants safety and security and his brother's response to that is “we can expose ourselves to the cycle of violence repeatedly”#“they can change we just have to subject ourselves to a meat grinder for god knows how long”#what sort of plan is that? what sort of life? for a boy who wanted to be accepted by humans as he is and not hide?#anyway. I love Knives.

the fact that Tesla’s ghost deliberately led Vash and Knives to her body is SO huge fr. it would have been so easy to make it a chance discovery, to keep her as a passive catalyst to kick-start the twins’ character arcs, but NO, she CHOSE this. “I will not be forgotten” she said. “my life was short and painful but most importantly it WAS.”
we don’t know what she expected to happen - whether she just wanted her brothers to know they had a sister, or wanted to caution them about humans’ capacity for cruelty to those that are different from them, or to galvanize them to seek justice on her behalf. but she wanted something. she was a person who could want things, even after she was dead.
(the implications wrt Plants, as interdimensional beings, possibly being able to persist at least in part after the death of the physical body in this dimension are also insane, but that’s a whole nother thing. just saying: she could still be out there)

also the idea that character dynamics are permanently fixed and that variation in how characters react to each other is necessarily "mischaracterization" no matter which point in time you select for a work examining their relationship is just... silly lol

One of my least favorite bits of mischaracterization I see with trigun is when people depict Knives and Vash’s dynamic like this
Tumblr media
When it’s way more like this usually
