Kit’s After Hours Notes!
This past week Kit and Sarah talked After Hours by Yuhta Nishio! Here are Kit’s notes!
This story is the Biggest Mood
Emi is me at clubs
The thing I like about this manga is that its about two adult women who are very competent. They have things going on in their lives and there is points of contention, but both women feel like fully realized people who could exist in real life.
Flawed but competent, I get a lot of Scott Pilgrim vibes from this story
I really appreciate how Kei doesn’t feel manic pixie dream girl-ish.
Yet at the same time, she’s often framed that way in the way the panels are drawn and in silly quirks like none of the records being labeled.
But she’s open and honest and passionate in a way that feels real. It doesn’t feel like she is the way she is to somehow benefit the protagonist. It just feels like she’s the way she is because that’s how she wants to be.
I also love that sexuality never really comes into play here. You don’t get any of the internalized homophobia, there’s no sex shaming or regrets that Emi has about hooking up with Kei (I mean she doesn’t want to tell her friend but like… I don’t know how I would tell me my friends if I ended up hooking up with a DJ).
I feel like this is the most like… true to life yuri we’ve read so far. I don’t know how the rest of it will turn out but it feels like a real thing that would happen. Yet at the same time it does have that fantastical kind of romantic air to it.
Kei’s friends making Emi pound a shot of Jaeger and not telling her it was Jaeger was fucking hilarious
Talk about the soundtrack to the manga because Hot Diggity Shit
Viz Release not as high quality as Seven Seas
Talking point- musician culture
I really like this scene with her friend where they argue with each other but still take care of each other

Kit’s Akuma no Riddle Notes!
This week on TomoChoco, Kit and Sarah talked about the manga Akuma no Riddle by Yun Kouga. It was a wild ride. Here are Kit’s notes!
One of the things I liked about early episodes of the manga was how it lacked the same level of fanservice as the anime, however the later chapters so have many god damn bathhouse scenes and it annoys me
The Romeo and Juliet romance between Kirigaya and Kenmochi was very well done and much more explicit in the manga than the anime
The pool kiss was wonderfully drawn
Talking point- favorite assassination attempt and why?
Shuto, the whole pool game was well thought out and bridge character moments with tension very well
Talking point- favorite tragic backstory and why?
Banba, I like the way its written and how they tie the “no one is coming to save you” in
I really like the weight of the lines during dramatic scenes, i.e the typhoon. It adds a lot of drama
“But now I just want to be with her” too cute
Haru and Toukaku have such an interesting relationship
God I hated Hanabusa’s cyborg outfit in the anime and I hate it just as much in the manga omg
THE ENDING OF THE MANGA IS SO MUCH BETTER
I loooooooove the ending so much more than the anime

Kit’s Lonely Wolf, Lonely Sheep Notes
Hey there yuri fans!! Take a look at Kit’s notes for Lonely Wolf, Lonely Sheep:
Talking point: Do you believe in horoscopes and fate?
I love this ongoing style of them in some kind of blank or nebulous space, its appeared at least once her chapter so far and i love how it highlights the personality and weight of the characters
This manga vaguely reminds me of Seconds by Bryan Lee O’Malley in terms of its style and the way the two main characters are relating to one another
I identified with little Imari’s struggle a lot, we talked about this in the MLEWL episode but i struggled a lot with feeling like the choice of profession laid such a huge weight on me and I love how big Imari is able to support her and help her push through that phase, although it was a bit rushed
YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO YOUR ELDERS OMG THAT IS SO CUTE IM DYING
Uuuuuugh Rika makes me uncomfortable uuuuugh
Rika went full Yandere and it squiks me out uuuugh
Excellent manga! A very cute small story. I wish it had been longer and flashed out the characters more, I would love to see these characters again
I wanna talk about the title “Lonely Wolf, Lonely Sheep” because i think the idea of the “lonely wolf”, ie a character who acts predatorily because of loneliness, is interesting
Having a difficult time getting to know someone and having to really put a lot of effort into talking to them is a Mood and a half

Kase-san Notes!
This week on TomoChoco, Kit and Sarah talked about the Kase-san Series, which is one of Kit’s favorite yuri manga. Here’s her notes!
Flowers: Morning glories, sunflowers, hydrangeas, tulips, cherry blossoms
The anthology that this manga was originally published in was called “Pure Yuri” and I think that’s a really good term to describe this series
I think the thing that I really love about these two is that they’re so open with each other. There’s a lot of new relationship anxiety that crops up from time to time, but at the end of the day they’re always honest with each other and feel like they can talk to each other about their feelings.
I like the way the series deals with different aspects of jealousy that happen in relationships and how they’re overcome with honest communication between the two girls
THESE TWO GIRLS ARE SUCH ABSOLUTE GOOBERS I ADORE THEM (re: waving at each other during Kase’s track meet)
Another thing I really love about the relationship is that it feels so balanced. It really feels to me like these two girls love each other to hell and back and that its MUTUAL.
The art is SO expressive. While it might not be as elegant as sometime with Aoi Hana, the slight cartoonishness of the panels does an excellent job of creating a vibrant, expressive story
Yamada is SO expressive, specifically. I could go through my books and screenshot like 100 panels or more of facial expressions she makes that just delight me
I love how these girls are just… allowed to love things and have other interests in their lives outside of each other. Kase LOVE track. Yamada LOVES horticulture. And they love listening to each other talk about their passions even if its an interest they don’t share. Girls being allowed to be passionate about things is SO FULFILLING.
Thing I didn’t like: “We’re both girls but we’ve been going out” at the beginning of like every chapter. Like, we get it. But I DO like how the story eventually moves away from that. The narration in and of itself is a form of character development. Because eventually it doesn’t matter that they’re both girls. All that matters is that they love each other. I’m trying not to cry in starbucks writing these notes like THEY’RE JUST SO BEAUTIFUL AND I LOVE THEM SO MUCH OKAY I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS
Talking point: What makes a good relationship? I know there’s that relationship goals meme but like… its interesting to me to think about what defines a good relationship
Yamada is the most useless lesbian but so is Kase and I just… I love them??? I love how much they love each other??? I can’t. I just can’t, you guys.

Aoi Hana Notes!!
Well these are certainly late getting posted but enjoy Kit’s Aoi Hana notes!!
Fumi is adorable
Sometimes this manga moves forward and backward in time and it can be a little confusing
The panel work and layouts for this manga is really good. It’s simple and clean, yet the emotions are the characters are always really prominent. And the establishing shots are GORGEOUS.
I really appreciate the complexity of the relationships at work in this manga. People can have complicated feelings for one another in a way that isn’t melodramatic and I feel like this manga strikes a good balance.
Framing the story around drama and theatre feels very grounding, somehow. Not sure how yet.
This story feels very realistic. While a lot of other yuri has sort of a fantastical feel to it. Like most romance novels. This one just… feels really real.
What grounds this manga? I can’t figure it out yet
“I shouldn’t get my hopes up” Yeeeeeeeeesh that line was a gut punch
The hand holding scene was precious
“How can i make sure she doesn’t end up hating me?” Another gut punch
This is something I don’t know if either of us has experience with but… dating someone who’s still figuring out their sexuality. I feel like we could talk for at least a hot minute about this.
Their first date outfits made me let out an audible “Awwww”
Them arguing about who is going to pay for what is precious as fuck
“Even if things go south for us, i won’t fall into despair like with sugimoto and chizu” -interesting thought
So like… they end up together in the end, but this wasnt one of those stories to me where it felt like the couple would end up like “together forever”, you know?I felt like Ah and Fumi are cuties but they’re… still figuring it out.
And it think THAT’s what grounds this to me. There’s a very real aspect to the “still figuring it out” parts of sexuality. Like, by the end Ah isn’t sure if she’s a lesbian, but she is sure she loves Fumi and wants to be in a relationship with her. It felt like it was just starting out. By the end I still wanted more. I wanted to see them grow more, learn more, and learn how to be together. Its interesting.
These girls need to learn how to trust and me themselves before they get in a relationship with anyone

Girlfriends notes!
This week, in a effort to not look like total goons in front of our guest @triaelf9, Kit did something slightly different from her usual notes. So instead of the usual rambling, please enjoy this handy podcast outline! See you all next week for Aoi Hana! Podcast outline:
Intro
Introduce Elaine; let them talk about themselves   Introduce the book and plot of the book, spoiler warning
Things We Didn’t Like
“Only difference between friends and lovers is sex” -Sugi-san Is this a common sentiment in Japan? Is there much of an ace community? Dieting, so much dieting I swear to god there was a Tales of a Gaijin about this Lack of communication between the characters when they had problems with each other Noncommunication for the sake of injecting drama into the plot, i.e the Maru-chan controversy that didn’t need to be a controversy
Things We Liked
Everything about Tama-min. Everything. She’s precious and must be protected.    Absolutely useless lesbians, specifically Akko        Akko was too damn relatable        What should I get the other for Christmas?        Looking at porn to figure out how sex works The part where they both liked each other but neither of them could figure out if they were dating or not was HIGHLY relatable
Spotlight on Elaine    Tell us about your journey of self discovery being queer in japan Girlfriends finished in 2010 and at the end of the book Akko and Mari mention fears associated with coming out to their friends and family. How authentic does this manga come to what it feels like to be gay in japan now and is it still difficult for LGBT to be out and open in society? What does representation mean to you and how do you bring that attitude into your work, on things like Pathways?
Viewer Questions
What’s your biggest pet peeve when it comes to gay representation in comics?
Plugs- ALL THE PLUGS

Kit’s Izetta Notes!
Episode 1:
Fine is a really good politician. Like, a REALLY good politician. I didn't notice this the first time I watched it but it immediately makes me appreciate her character more
I forgot how much I like the music in this show
Izetta riding an anti tank rifle is as badass as it is symbolic
Episode 2:
Okay so a Dutchy is a real thing, I looked it up. There's just no sovereign dutchys left in the world.
Write something about how you're noticing that in a lot of yuri the characters face adversity and how it often represents a lot of the social stigma about queer relationships I don't even know this is a complex subject and I'm too tired right now
Episode 3:
I don't really have a lot of notes on this episode but the true reveal of Izetta’s power and her beating the shit out if tanks in the bomb
Episode 4:
I want to talk about this scene with Izetta and the guard captain in the car. How Izetta pledged herself to Fine because she protected her, and because her smile brought Izetta so much joy.
And Fine’s nobility too. She stood up for what she believe was right even as a child and risked her life and title to make sure those around her were protected. That moment defines the demeanor that she’ll bring to the entire war and it is so pivotal in understanding the characters personalities and how that informs their sacrifices
The end of this episode is super adorable. Like… I love how Izetta realized the importance of Fine’s job and believes in her ability to change the world around her. Fine is a powerful force and a noble person, but she doesn't yet believe in her ability to inflict change. Izetta believes in her completely, and this helps Fine present herself as a more dominant force. It's just cute. I love how they support each other.
Izetta and Fine’s relationship is powerful because it is uplifting for both of them
Episode 6:
I forgot about this stupid dress boob scene
I love how obvious it is that they didn't have the budget to animate the dancing
Fine has a pie fetish
GOD FINE IS SUCH A GOOD POLITICIAN
Rip Jonas :(
Episode 11:
Izetta crying because she made Fine cry is a Big Mood
I know its cheesy but the assault rifle broom will never not be cool to me
I didn't take notes for like five episodes and it sort of worries me but also I just didn't have strong enough feelings to want to write anything down
Bianca is all of us
Izetta’s devotion to Fine is so fucking powerful she's so pure
That slap though
Okay so I have a lot of say about this broom riding scene specifically, but it can mostly be boiled down to the fact that I just find it to be incredibly romantic. You can just see how much these girls care about each other, and the framing and lighting is really well done and it makes the love feel magical and warm.
Izetta is primarily a story about a war and how a small country strategically uses the assets it has to win over a large opponent. But I love that at the center of this story is the love between two women who have saved each other in different ways. Fine saved Izetta quite literally by saving her from the mod, but Izetta’s devotion also saves Fine when she doubts herself and has given up. The two push each other forward to help end the war and without their love and devotion to each other the war would be a very different thing. It's just really cute and nice.
The sound design in this show is very satisfying. I love that sound effect when she uses magic
Episode 12:
FUCK I FORGOT SEIG DIES
Uuuuuuuugh I want to talk about this ending but I'm not quite sure how to say it
I think this show is best summed up by my good friend Elizabeth: “Those girls deserved better writing.”
I hate the ending of this show. Like okay it's not the worst ending in the entirety of the world but also it is just so goddamn disappointing and the post credits ending scene is equally, if not more, disappointing. It's not technically bury your gays but at the same time it falls into so many of those tragic love tropes and after such an uplifting romance to see it end in a huge sacrifice and then not even follow up on how Izetta lived or how their relationship dealt with the fallout of that decision feels like such a Goddamn ripoff.

Kit’s Dragon Maid Notes
Episode 1:
Kobayashi has a maid fetish
I FUCKING LOVE this opening
“If you consider starting Armageddon strong” “I do and please don't”
Kobayashi's deadpan “right you're a dragon” gets me every time
“no threatening murder!!”
Tohru is actually me
“it's cultural appropriation but without any culture” (re: tohrus outfit)
“show us what your moe is made of”
Episode 2:
“no that's not true shut up” -kanna
Okay so they make this point in episode 2 that kanna loves practical jokes and pranks and this literally never comes up again
“once you're stuck with one you might as well have two” -kobayashi
Tohru is in love with Kobayashi because of her kindness to others and I think that's really special. Because Tohru is kind to others. Tohru is a character that is just naturally kind but her backstory has made it fairly clear that she's been raised in a world that has never really shown her kindness (her dad is an asshole, the humans are at war with dragons, even fafnir and lucoa are single mindedly focused on their own gain) in return. And then she meets kobayashi and she meets someone who shares the same core value of humanity that she has and just… instantly falls in love with that. I love that. It's great.
I want to talk about this scene in episode 2 where the girls play because it really sums up one of my favorite things about this show. Which is not the over the top comedy, but the quieter more human moments. Dragon Maid is a zany show, but it balances itself out by really putting the characters and their relationships in the spotlight. There's always a moment where things slow down and focus on the bonds that these people feel for each other, and it's what takes the show, which could've just been any other zany comedy, and kicks it up to the next level. In episode 1 it's when lucoa asks Tohru if she likes living with humans, in episode 2 it's when they play word chain. I just love these emotional character beats.
This montage if kanna learning about human things makes me smile so hard
Episode 3:
“I can overlook the catastrophe of books” tohru is SO ME
“This must be like how my dad feels when my mom yells at him” So… married?
I love how happy Kobayashi gets when Tohru and Kanna are happy. Even in episode three, after being annoyed at living in a small house and having to move with them, when she sees that they are genuinely happy she does this small smile of just… content. Kobayashi is a character that comes off as callous but is really super gentle and caring and I love the small character moments when we see that sweetness and care for others shine through
I forgot about their metalhead neighbor hahahaha
“I hate this and everything it stands for. Kill me. I’m already dead inside.” Faf’s opening line
Okay when do we talk about how disappointed I am about Lucoa? Because in these first few episodes she’s painted as a wise, older sister character that, while still wacky, plays well with Kobayashi’s straight woman schtick. And then she’s...not that. And it sucks.
Episode 4:
Time for my favorite episode!
Sometimes a family is an exhausted lesbian and two dragons
I legitimately don’t have any other notes for this part of the episode its just cute
I used to think Saikawa’s tsudere act was super over exaggerated and it is to a point but no there’s actual kids at my school who act like this
So in the dub, they pronounce Saikawa’s name “Sai-ko-wa” which I thought was like a mean nickname as first like “psycho-wa” but no that’s just how they say it and its annoying
Okay but can we talk about how fucking ride or die dragons are for each other? Like Kanna comes home and says she has to do a duel and Tohru and Fafnir don’t even flinch they’re just like “okay who do i have to kill?” and I love that.
Okay I know this wasn’t in the sub but during this playground scene the guy starts bullying the girls and his friend is like “Dude relax” and then he keepings bullying them and his friend says “Seriously dude, who hurt you?” and it just kills me.
“Saikawa’s not very popular...” “I KNOW IM THE WORST”
Dodgeball game is Good Shit
I’m always very impressed by the quality of the visuals in this show and then I remember that it’s a KyoAni show and I’m like “Oh yeah well duh”
Episode 5:
I have no notes for this episode… honestly it’s really forgettable?
Episode 6:
So, this is the first episode where Shouta appears and NOW I feel like it's a good time to talk about how deeply disappointed this part of the show makes me feel. Here's my whole thing with it… the dynamic between Shouta and Lucoa could've actually been really funny without being sexual. Lucoa is this big sister character that we’ve seen be wise and collected in the past, but when someone doesn't need or want her, she becomes very flustered and needy. And that, by itself, is fucking hilarious. The goddess needs others to think of her highly and when someone doesn't want anything to do with her she becomes an attention whore. But this DIDN'T NEED TO BE SEXUAL. look at Konosuba. Konosuba does a very similar bit with Aqua and Kazuma and it works amazingly. The added sexuality simply exists to objectify Lucoa and turn her in a bimbo, which contradicts her earlier character development. Plus like… the kid is literally named Shouta. Which adds even more layers of grossness to it.
Now I wanna speak to a counter argument one of my exes made about Lucoa, who was one of his favorite characters on the show. He said the whole bit was funny but girls wouldn't get it because “you've never been an 11 year old boy”. Like… okay that's true but I have been an 11 year old girl who was attracted to other girls and let me tell you these things were extremely uncomfortable. Adults should never force sexuality on children. It's icky as fuck. That's why I'm glad the kanna stuff is kept as like a child romance, it works a lot better and it overall a lot more palatable.
Episode 7:
Okay, THIS actually might be my favorite episode. I know it's labeled the fanservice episode, but I feel like it has not only the best jokes but some really good relationship building between Tohru and Kobayashi. The speech where they talk about their parents and the differences in the way they grew up in really good. And it does a really good job of kind of reiterating the idea that Tohru came from an abusive home and that part of her journey in this world is healing that trauma. And kobayashi is helping her through her kindness, tolerance, and allowance for Tohru to have new experiences. The more their relationship developed the more I love it.
Episode 8:
The moms fight over who gets to make lunch for Kanna, grow closer as people
Episode 9:
So I almost skipped this episode because I was running out of time, but this was the first episode to make me full on tear up so I am glad I kept it. The expansion and evolution of Kanna and Kobayashi’s relationship is ADORABLE and I really love it.
Saikawa needs to calm the fuck down
This episode also gives me better context for the kids’ ages, since it states that Kanna and Saikawa are 3rd graders and Shouta is a 5th grader. And now that I have that context for Shouta like… the Lucoa this is even ickier ugh I can’t.
Episode 10:
Christmas!!!
This was a sweet, goofy episode. I love when the ensemble gets together for goofs. I wish there was more of it throughout the show.
Episode 11:
I want to talk about Faf and Takiya’s relationship too, because its equally adorable. I know they’re just gamer bros but the roommate relationship is very very cute.
I love that Tohru has clairvoyance and could look through the door to see who is there but the kotatsu has made her LITERALLY too lazy to even use magic. True to life.
I really wanna hear this story about how Lucoa got trashed and lost her goddess powers
This is where the show starts to really lay into this idea of found family and finding a place where you belong hardcore and i am into it
Episode 12:
Okay so I can’t tell if this is a contradiction or not but Tohru says Lucoa should try changing her body rather than doing over modest dress but in the valentines day episode don’t they say that the reason they all look the way they look in human form is because it’s kind of the rough equivalent to their dragon forms? Like, they’re all especially cute dragons so that’s why they’re all especially cute girls. So like… is Tohru being facetious here?
Tohru and Kobayashi meet
