Chapter seven
Tumblr media
               February 1944.
For the following months after his first rescue mission, Steve and the Howling commandos were sent back into the war with a special mission: take down Hydra’s outposts and bases all over Europe in order to stop Red Skull and his followers. Times were rough, fighting Hydra wasn’t easy but the simple thought of ending the war and being able to fly back and maybe start a simple life with Ellie kept Steve going. As a reminder, Steve had recently added a picture of his girl in his compass and looked at it every now and then. Every time things got too hard, he would just look at that picture and imagined what she was doing back in London where she stayed to work in an hospital in the city center.
In between each battle Steve always took the time to write her letters, he could never give a lot of details about their missions, he didn’t want to either because he didn’t want to worry her, but he always made sure to let her know that he and Bucky were okay. He also loved to receive her letters and kept them in the front of his sketch book, re-reading them when he was missing home and missing her.
Sitting on his camp bed, in his tent a few miles from the front, Steve was drawing Ellie’s face, her soft features pulled into that smile he loved so much and her long brown hair falling on her shoulders. It was how he remembered her from the last time he had seen her, asleep by his side. Steve was an amazing artist and taking the time to draw always kept him calm. He was lost in his own head and didn’t hear Bucky come into the tent until he felt the movement of his bed.
“You miss her.” Bucky simply said, looking at Steve’s drawing. He knew how his sister felt about Steve, he had known for a while and he was fully aware of Steve’s feeling for her as well, but he didn’t know they were going steady, not yet anyway.
“Yeah…” Steve stopped his pencil quickly glancing at his best friend. He was a little worried about telling Bucky how he felt about his sister because he was a protective brother.
“Me too.” Bucky admitted, studying his best friend’s face for a moment, while silence settled between them. “Tell her.”
“What?” Steve looked up, frowning, a little confused.
“Tell her how you feel about her, Steve. We’ll be back in London a few days, just tell her.”
Steve felt himself blush and rubbed his hand on the back of his neck nervously before he muttered. “She knows.”
“What do you mean she knows.” It was Bucky’s turn to be confused.
“She knows because I told her, a few weeks back.” Steve explained as Bucky’s face seemed unreadable.
“You told her, so does that mean…”
“We’re planning to go dancing, when everything is over.” Steve said, a smile on his face.
“I can’t believe it, my best friend and my sister.” Bucky shook his head, a small smirk across his lips.
“I thought it was best for her to tell you. That’s why I never said anything.” Steve confessed, closing his sketch book and placing it back into his bag.
“You know I should give you the whole speech of ‘if you hurt her, I’ll kill you’, but I feel like I probably won’t be able to kick your ass anymore now.” Bucky chuckled.
With the super soldier serum there was no chance he could win a fight against Steve now, but Bucky still wanted to let him know what he thought. He loved Steve like a brother, but Ellie was his little sister, his family, his blood and he love her to piece and would literally do anything for her.
“I’m not planning on hurting her, Buck. I’ve waiting for her long enough.” Steve confided quietly.
“I know.”
“You know?” Steve raised his eyes brows in surprise, not sure of what Bucky meant.
“I know Ellie’s been in love with you for years. And no offence Steve but you’re not that subtle either. I’ve known you liked her for a while too. You two are just the biggest idiots for not realizing it before.” Bucky noted, leaning against the wall behind him and studying Steve’s face who was surprised.
“So you don’t mind? Me and Ellie I mean.” Steve inquired as he always thought being in love with Ellie would be an issue for Bucky.
“Not really.” Bucky shrugged honestly. “At least I know she found a good guy. Stubborn and reckless sometimes, sure, but someone with a good heart.”
Steve offered him a smile and a silence fell between the two best friend. Steve’s mind racing through Bucky’s words: Ellie’s been in love with you for years. He hadn’t said months, he had said years. She’d been in love with him before the serum, before any other women really took an interest in him. He couldn’t deny that because of the serum he attracted a lot of attention, and especially a lot of women, something which had never been the case before. Except with her. She was special, she always had been, and this was only confirming it.
“She loved you way before the muscles and the serum, punk.” Bucky finally spoke, pulling the Captain out of his thoughts.
“I guess I just really don’t understand why.”
“Because she never cared about that, Steve. She likes you for you, always had, and not for all the things that came out of the lab. I just don’t understand why it took you two so long to figure it out.”
Steve shrugged; he didn’t know why it took so long either. If he had known earlier, he would have told her before, but he never thought he stood a chance with Ellie.
“She’s special.” Steve whispered more for himself than for Bucky before his best friend dropped his hand on his shoulder and squeezed it slightly.
“She is. You better not mess it up.” Bucky warned him, his eyes conveying the silent warning he was giving Steve if he ever hurt his sister.
“I won’t.” Steve shook his head. He had no plan on hurting her or on messing things up with Ellie, she was his girl, the one he had always wanted to have. He loved her and he was really hoping one day they would be able to build a life together, maybe move a little outside of city and start a family.
“Come on, punk. Let’s go finalize our plan for tomorrow.” Bucky stood up from the bed and walked out of the tent, Steve following closely. One mission, one base to take down and they’ll be back in London for a few days, and he could see Ellie, hold her in his arms.
****
A few days later, Steve was sat at the back plane, his leg bouncing nervously as they got closer to London. They were flying back to the base for a few days, and he was nervous to see Ellie again. They hadn’t seen each other in four months, not since their last face to face talk and the night they had spend laying in bed, cuddling and talking for hours. He missed her, dearly. It didn’t take long for Bucky to notice the way his best friend got into his own head, he knew the punk better than anyone and he turned from the conversation he was having with Dum Dum to make his way to Steve.
“Relax, punk.”
Steve looked up at him, frowning slightly. “What?”
“Steve, you’re so nervous, you almost make me nervous. What’s got into you?” Bucky wondered, taking a sit next to his best friend.
“Nothing, I’m fine.” Steve shook his head but sighed quietly.
“Yeah, right. And I’m the queen of England. Come on, spill it man.”
Steve stayed silent for a moment, looking down at his fingers, playing with the, nervously. “I’m just… I’m nervous to see her, that’s all.”
“Steve, it’s Ellie. You’ve known her for years.” Bucky shook his head, chuckling slightly.
“I know, but things are different now. We barely got a few hours together last time after I told her how I felt.” Steve confessed. Deep down, he knew things would be fine because it was Ellie, he knew her, but he never expected to be going steady with her one day, he never thought he would be good enough for her.
“I know, I know. But you should see the bright side of it, you finally get to spend time with her after the crazy last few months.” Bucky explained, a soft smile on his lips. “Oh man, I’m not even gonna get to spend time with my little sister, am I? She’s gonna be with you the whole time.” Bucky groaned, leaning his head against the back wall.
Steve let out a chuckled, relaxing a little as Bucky joked around. Deep down he knew things would be fine because it was him and Ellie and between them it had always been easy and natural. He didn’t have to pretend to be someone else, to like things he didn’t like, he could just be the weird skinny kid he had always been even if his body had changed.
A short hour later, they landed on the tarmac on London airport. Steve grabbed his bag and followed Bucky out of the cargo plane. Quickly his eyes noticed a familiar silhouette and he couldn’t help but smile. She was beautiful, her long brown hair, slightly longer than the last time he’s seen her, falling gently on her shoulders. She was wearing a beautiful blue dress which brought out those gorgeous blue eyes he loved so much. For a second, he stopped, watched as Bucky reached up to her first and pulled her into a tight hug, her arms slipping around his neck.
“I missed you.” Ellie whispered, glad to see Bucky before she pulled away from his brother, taking his face in her hands, checking him for any injuries.
“I missed you too. And I’m fine.” Bucky chuckled, grabbing Ellie’s hands, and squeezing them softly. “But I think someone else missed you.” Bucky whispered, stepping to the side and Ellie’s eyes landed on Steve, her heart speeding up in her chest.
For a moment, Ellie just looked at Steve as his smile widened. He was so handsome. She walked up to him, threw her arms around his neck and snuggled her face into the crook of his neck. Steve wrapped his arm around her, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath.
“I missed you so damn much…” Steve whispered, pressing a kiss to her neck.
“I missed you too! Are you okay?” Ellie pulled away, taking his face in her hands, checking him up just as she had done with Bucky a few minutes earlier.
Steve chuckled and without hesitation he gently pressed his lips to hers. “I’m perfect.” Steve pressed a kiss to her lips again and she felt herself blush.
The last four months had seemed so long and endless to Ellie but now that Steve was back, she just wanted time to stop. She wanted to snuggle by his side, kiss his lips, hold his hand and stay by his side. A part of her hoped the war would be won overnight so Steve wouldn’t have to leave again because every time he was gone, she couldn’t help but get scared to lose him for good. She knew with the serum he could take care of himself, but he wasn’t invisible.
Simply enjoying having him back by her side, Ellie slipped her hand in his, intertwining their fingers and followed him and Bucky to the car waiting for them. She probably wasn’t supposed to get to the base with them, but she didn’t want to leave Steve’s side, or Bukcy for that matter, she had missed him too. They were in London only for a few days before they had to leave again for God knows how long. Once at the base, Steve, Bucky and the rest of the Howling commandos made their way to the main room for a debrief and Ellie sat at a table waiting for them.
After a few hours, they all made their way to Whip and Fiddle and took seat at the tables while Dum Dum and Peggy ordered the first round of drinks. Steve sat by Ellie and slipped his arm behind her back, resting it on the back of her chair. He offered her a warm and gently smile which made her heart melt. She craved to touch him and kiss him, but she knew they couldn’t display too much affection while they were in public, so for the time being she simply smiled back.
Steve studied her for a moment, taking in every single feature of her gorgeous face. He was dying to kiss her too, and truth be told he was kind of hoping they could be alone. However, they simply set back and chatted with the group around them for a little while. They shared a quick diner, counting stories and when the Dum Dum, Jim and Jacques started to sing as they clearly had too much too drink and Steve knew it was his queue to leave. He chuckled at the loud men and shook his head before he turned toward Ellie.
“Want to go for a walk?” Steve offered, his thumb gently touching the back of her shoulder.
Ellie nodded, smiling at him lovingly. “Yes.”
“Alright guys, don’t drink too much.” Steve told his friends a little louder, even if it was probably too late for that and stood up, offering his hand to Ellie who took it without hesitation. “0800 at the base, we still have a lot to do.”
“Yes, Captain.” Gabe responded, saluting him before turning back to his conversation with Jacques.
Ellie looked at Bucky who had a smirk she knew all too well on his lips and she blushed slightly at his words. “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” Bucky winked at his sister, and she shook her head, trying to ignore what Bucky was implying.
Ellie pressed a kiss to her brother’s cheek before she followed Steve out of the pub, the cold air of February making her shiver. Steve grabbed his jacket and placed it on Ellie’s shoulder who muttered a quiet thank you. The walk to Ellie small studio in the city was silent, but it was a comfortable silence as they both enjoyed being back with each other. It had often been like that between them, they didn’t always need to talk. Ellie searched her bag for her keys, grabbed them and opened the door to the tiny appartement.
“It’s not big but make yourself at home.” Ellie said softly, taking Steve’s jacket off her shoulders and hanging it on the coat rack.
“Do you know how long you’re staying positioned in London?” Steve wondered, looking around and smiling as he noticed a picture of him before the serum resting on her coffee table.
“Not exactly. The head nurse says I’ll probably be here at least until the end of the war.” Ellie explained, taking off her low heels and making her way to her small brown couch.
Steve followed her, untying his tie and the first few buttons of his shirt and took a seat by her side, bending a leg under him to face her. He gently pushed away a piece of hair, placing it behind her ear and rested his hand against her cheek as she closed her eyes, leaning her cheek against his palm, and let out a soft hmm of contentment.
“God, I missed you so much…” Steve muttered, creeping closer to her and Ellie opened her eyes, meeting his.
“I missed you too. I was so scared something would happen to you, or Bucky.” Ellie confessed, putting one of her hands on his and the other playing with the untied tie of his uniform.
“I know, but we’re both here, safe and sound.” Steve reassured her, stroking her cheek and he leaned his face closer to hers. “And I can finally take you out, properly.”
Ellie chuckled quietly, pressing his forehead to his. “I can’t wait.”
Steve couldn’t wait any longer and he finally pressed his lips to hers, her hand wrapping around his tie. The kiss was slow and soft, full of the love they hadn’t been able to show each other over the past few months. Steve’s free hand grabbed her hip, pulling her closer to him as they both slowly started to feel the tension build up between them. It was something new and scary for both, it was a little clumsy, hesitant, especially on Ellie’s end, but they deeply craved each other touch. Steve’s hands found their way to Ellie’s thighs, slowly slipping under the edge of her dress, caressing her skin as her hands tried to unbutton his shirt.
Steve pulled away, panting and he opened his eyes to meet hers. “Ellie, wait…” She backed up a little, biting down on her lower lip, cheeks flushed from the situation. “I really want you. Are you… Are you sure you want to do this?” Steve whispered, looking for any trace of hesitation or regret in her face, but there was none.
Ellie nodded, pulling his shirt open, her fingers brushing against his skin making him shiver. “I am. I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life.”
That was all the confirmation Steve needed and he crashed his lips back on hers, as she slipped closer to him, wrapping her arms around his neck, fingers playing in the back of his neck. Steve lips made their way to her neck in a trail of kisses before he nibbled at her soft skin, making her moan softly throwing her head back. The sound coming out of Ellie’s mouth made Steve’s heart race in his chest and suddenly he was very hot. He grabbed her legs on each side of his body, pulling her closer and stood up. Ellie let out a cry of a surprise, tightening her legs around her soldier’s waist as he made his way to the bed standing in the corner of her apartment.
That night Steve and Ellie made love to each other. It was the first time for both of them and truth be told it was a little awkward, a little bumpy, as any first time always was. But Steve was so tender and gentle with Ellie making sure he wasn’t doing anything she wasn’t okay with, and she couldn’t help but fall even more in love with him just as he did with her. It wasn’t perfect but it was perfect to them and they wouldn’t want to change a thing about it.

Chapter six
Tumblr media
Unable to fall back asleep, Ellie arrived early the next morning, before anyone else was there. She made her way to her laboratory and started preparing her materials for the day. Colonel Phillips had asked her to give a few of the Howling Commandos, as well as Steve, a full check up to. They knew Captain America was fine, but none of them knew the real power of the serum and the Colonel wanted to make sure he was fine to run the missions coming.
Once she had set up her lab properly, she checked the time and decided to look for Peggy. Ellie and Peggy had grown a little closer when they were both working on the front in Italy and Ellie was glad to have someone like agent Carter by her side. She was hot headed, strong and deep down she really admired her a lot.
“Hey Peg.” Ellie smiled at her friend.
“Hey Ellie. I was about to go look for Steve to take him to Stark’s lab, want to join?” Peggy offered.
“Actually, I just wanted to come say hi. Bucky should be at my lab soon. Colonel Phillips asked me to run a few tests and blood samples on him, Steve and a few of the other boys, make sure they’re okay before the mission. I just have to go grab some files.”
Peggy nodded and made her way to through the underground base where they were running their mission. Ellie followed her and grabbed the files she needed from a table. However, when she lifted her head, her eyes stopped on something she wished she hadn’t seen. Steve kissing a woman, kissing private Lorraine. Ellie’s heart dropped in her chest, and her eyes filles with tears as she noticed Peggy dropping her hands to her hips, her face becoming serious.
“Captain!” Peggy said loudly, making Steve jump and pull away from private Lorraine. “We’re ready for you, if you’re not otherwise occupied.”
Steve whipped his lips before his eyes flickered to Ellie who had freeze behind Agent Carter. Steve cursed himself, he really wished Ellie hadn’t seen that.
“I’ll see you later.” Ellie muttered to Peggy who simply nodded at her and started to walk away.
“Ellie, wait!” Steve exclaimed, trying to follow Ellie but she slammed the door in his face before he could catch up to her.
“Looks like finding a partner wasn’t that hard after all.” Ellie heard Peggy told him coldly; hurt for her friend as Steve replaced his tie properly.
Steve sighed and knocked on the door, Ellie standing right behind it, trying to hold her tears.
“Ellie, that’s not what you thought it was.” Steve tried to explain though the closed door separating them.
Ellie closed her eyes, her hands covering her mouth as she let out a soft sob. Why did she have to fall for the only man she was sure she couldn’t have.
“You always wanted to be a solider, and now you are, just like the rest of them.” Ellie heard Peggy say and she could perfectly picture her, standing with her hands on her hips facing Steve.
“What is that suppose to mean?” Steve turned to face Peggy.
“You still don’t know a bloody thing about women.” It was the last thing Ellie heard her friend say before Steve and Peggy’s voice disappeared behind the door.
Ellie took a deep shaky breath, trying to pull herself together and pushed away the picture of Steve and Private Lorraine out of her brain, she hah work to do. She knew Steve was a good man, but seeing him kiss another woman, after what Peggy had told her, felt like a stab in the back. After a moment, she pushed herself away from the door she had leaning on and dropped the files she was still holding on the desk. At the same time, the door of the lab opened, and Bucky stepped in.
“Good morning little sister.” The man said cheerfully before his eyes stopped on her and he frowned looking at her red and puffy eyes. “Hey, hey, what’s wrong?” Bucky came closer and gently grabbed her face in his hands.
“Nothing. I’m okay, Buck.” Ellie muttered.
“You’re definitely not. Come on, talk to me.” Bucky pulled her to sit on the edge on the medical bed, taking a sit next to her but she stayed silent. “It’s Steve, isn’t it?”
“Wh… What?!” Ellie stammered in surprise, looking up at her brother who smiled at her softly.
“You know, you think you’re good at hiding things, but I know you, Ellie.”
“How long have you known?” Ellie sniffled, tucking a lock of her hair behind her ear nervously.
“A few months. Before I left for the war.” Bucky admitted, gently squeezing her hand. “I just didn’t think it would get to the point where it would make you this unhappy.”
“I’m not unhappy, Buck. It’s just…” Ellie sighed. “I’m sorry. There’s a lot going on, and I can’t think about this right now.”
“You know, Steve is lucky to have you. He always has been lucky to have you, even before that stupid serum. And if he can’t see that, then it’s his loss. You are an amazing woman, Ellie, and you have a heart of gold.” Bucky slipped his arm around Ellie’s shoulders and pulled her into a hug, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “And if Steve doesn’t realize that, I know you’ll find something who truly deserves you.”
“Thanks, Buck.” Ellie sniffled, staying against him for a little while before she finally pulled away and stood up. “Okay, enough whipping. I’ve got a job to do here.”
“I wished you’d forgot about it.” Bucky admitted chuckling.
“Come on, lay down.”
Bucky did as he was told, laying on the medical bed while Ellie grabbed her stethoscope and her medical supplies. She checked up on her brother, making notes to his file before she took some blood to send it for test.
****
After running test on Bucky, Ellie did the same on the rest of the Howling Commandos’ members. As always, Dum Dum managed to lift her spirit, making her laugh and it made her day a little easier. At least that was until her last patient of the day showed up. Steve stood in the doorway, his hands pushed into the pockets of his pants, a guilty and sad look on his face. Ellie knew she could never be mad at Steve, she had never been able to, but yet her heart was still aching from what she had seen earlier in the day. She didn’t want to show Steve she was sad and disappointed, and it wasn’t the time to be anyways. She took a deep breath and quickly glanced at Steve, taking his file from the pile on the desk.
“Sit down on the bed. I just need a minute to finish my notes.” Ellie explained, writing down a few more notes, as Steve did as he was told.
“Ellie about…” Steve started.
“How do you feel?” Ellie interrupted him, wanting to stay professional.
Steve opened his mouth, surprised of her ton, even though a part of him knew he deserved her cold shoulder. “Fine. Really good actually.”
Ellie nodded, writing it down. “No sign of the effect of the serum wearing off?”
“No. I feel stronger. I can breathe, see and hear better. I guess it’s permanent so far.”
Once again Ellie simply nodded before she dropped the file on the desk. “Can you please take off your shirt, and I will have to take a few blood samples to make sure everything is fine.”
Steve executed the order, untying his tie, unbuttoning his shirt and taking it off, dropping it next to him. When Ellie turned back to face him, it took everything she got to stay concentrated. Steve was physically different, so different that it was almost unsettling. He went from these 95 pounds 5 feet 4 skinny kid to this 240 pounds 6 feet 2 muscular man and even if Ellie never cared about how Steve looked, she couldn’t help but feel a little disturbed at the sight. She bit down on her lip and looked up, her eyes meeting his for a second before she placed the stethoscope against his chest asking to breathe deeply.
“This is incredible…” Ellie whispered to herself.
“What is?” Steve wondered, never letting his eyes go of her.
“Your asthma, it sounds like it’s gone, completely gone. No whistling noises.”
“I told you, I feel like I breathe a lot better.”
“Do you realize how many lives we could help if we could figure out how the serum was made? This incredible.” Ellie repeated, amazed at how the serum had improved Steve’s health.
Steve smiled softly at her words. He loved when she geeked out like this, when she was amazed at the science that she was so passionate about, it was one of his favorite things about her. Ellie was dedicated, loving, generous and always there to put others first, that’s who she had always been and who she’ll always be. Steve got lost in his thought for a moment, staring at her as she moved around the lab where she perfectly belonged. He winced a little when he felt the sting of a needle entering the skin inside his elbow.
“Sorry.” Ellie muttered seeing his features twist slightly, but Steve simply smiled at her.
When she had everything, she needed, she wrote down a few more notes and put the blood tubes on the small tray.
“I’ve got everything I need. I will give Colonel Phillips the results of the blood tests as soon as I have them.” Ellie explained, keeping her eyes off of him.
Steve knew she was about to walk out, and he couldn’t let it happen, not before he had cleared the air between them. He hated seeing her so distant with him, he hated just thinking about leaving for the front again with her being mad or disappointed at him. Gently, he grabbed her hand as she was about to walk out of the lab.
“Ellie…”
“Look Steven, I don’t want to talk about it.” Ellie confessed, her eyes avoiding his.
Steve winced at the use of his full name, Ellie never called him Steven, never. “Listen, this is not what it looked like. I promise.”
“Please, don’t lie. I know what I saw, I’m not stupid.” Ellie pulled her hand away from his. “You should get dressed and go. You have a mission waiting for you.”
“Elizabeth, just stop.” Steve said a little louder than he had intended, putting his shirt back on and buttoning it back up. Ellie looked up at him, surprised by his ton and the use of her full name as well. “Sorry. But can you please listen to me for a second. I did not kiss her, okay? She kissed me and I just… I was taken by surprise. I don’t care about her.” Steve confessed, standing up and walking towards Ellie.
“It doesn’t matter, Steve.” Ellie shrugged, grabbing the files and blood tubes from her desk. “You never saw me like that, and you never will.”
Before the Captain could say anything, Ellie walked out of the room. Man, she was fast for someone so tiny Steve thought. He sighed loudly and followed her. “Ellie. Ellie!”
Ellie didn’t stop, simply dropping the blood tubes and the files on the desk of another nurse and exchanging a few words with her. Steve was about to call her back and say something when his name was called.
“Captain, Colonel Phillips wants to talk to you.” A soldier announced.
“Give me a minute.” Steve said to him, turning back to Ellie. “Ellie can we please talk about this. I can’t leave with you being mad at me.”
“I’m not mad at you, Steve, but there is nothing to talk about. Now, please just go. You wanted to fight in the war, and now you are.” Ellie looked at him for second, raised on her tiptoe and dropped a kiss on his cheek.
“Captain Rogers.” The soldier repeated.
“I’m coming.” Steve replied, watching Ellie walk away before he sighed loudly and followed the soldier to meet with the Colonel.
As soon as she was out of sight Ellie leaned against the nearest wall, her hands shaking and took a shaky breath. She stayed there for a while, trying to calm her heart beating way too fast in her chest and once she was finally calm, she pushed herself away from the wall and made her way out of the military facility. She climbed into a taxi and gave the address of her hotel. She needed some alone time; she needed to think and clear her head.
Once she was back in her hotel room, Ellie walked into her bathroom, quickly undressed, and slipped in the shower. She let the hot water run on her body, closing her eyes, and feeling her muscles slowly relax. After a while, she climbed out of the shower, dried herself and slipped into a fresh pair a pajama. She finally felt a little better as she walked into her kitchen and turned the kettle on to make some tea. She reached for her big Captain America’s mug, one that Steve had gifted her from his USO tour as a joke and put a bag of tea before pouring the hot water on it.
Ellie placed the mug on the small night table, sat on her bed and was about to open her book when there was a knock on the door. She frowned, walked to the door and opened it revealing Steve standing in front of her.
“Steve, what are you doing here?”
“I told you, I can’t leave if you don’t believe me.” Steve muttered softly. “Can I please come in? I just want to talk.”
Ellie hesitated for a moment before she nodded, and stepped to the side, letting Steve walk into her hotel room. “Can I get you some tea?”
“I’d love that.”
Ellie walked to the small kitchen area, took a second mug, and poured some tea. She brought the cup to Steve who had taken a sit on a chair by the small table. An awkward silence settled between them as Ellie sat on the edge of the bed, looking down at her bare feet. Steve knew Ellie enough to know she wouldn’t say anything, she would be the one to open up to him after what he had done that morning.
“I’m sorry if I hurt you. I never meant to. Truth is, I… I haven’t stopped thinking about you since that kiss, Ellie.” Steve confessed softly, putting his mug on the table.
“What?” Ellie stammered, her eyes opening wide in surprise and meeting Steve’s.
Steve stood up and walked to her, he offered her his hand and when she slipped hers into it, he pulled her to her feet, his other hand settling on her cheek. Her heart quickened in her chest as she felt her stomach twist.
“I only want you, Ellie. It’s been you for a while.” Steve finally said truthfully, pouring his heart out to the woman he had feelings for a while.
“Steve…” Ellie started but she couldn’t find the words because, in reality, she didn’t know what to say.
“I just never thought you’d ever feel the same. A beautiful dame like you liking a little skinny kid from Brooklyn.”
“Steve, I’ve liked you for years. I never cared how big or how small you were, and I don’t care if you have the super serum or not…” Ellie told him, slightly shaking his head.
“I know, I know that now. I just thought you’d never see me that way.” Steve gently stroked her cheek as she took a step closer to him. “I guess we’re two idiots then. My ma would probably laugh at us right now.”
Ellie chuckled slightly. “She would.” She rested her hand on his forearm, her eyes starring into his.
“So, you’re not mad at me anymore?” Steve asked her, pressing his forehead against Ellie’s.
Ellie shook her head, closing her eyes. “You know I can never stay mad at you.”
“And right now, I’m really glad you can’t.” Steve whispered before his lips gently met hers.
Ellie’s heart warmed in her chest as her lips moved perfectly against Steve’s. It was like the world disappeared around them and for a moment Ellie wished they could stay like this forever. She didn’t want to go back to the reality of the war, a reality where Steve had to leave in just a few short days to fight in the front again. Ellie had always been scared to lose him, but now she was even more terrified.
They both pulled away, slightly out of breath, their forehead resting together before Steve spoke quietly. “I should go. I have a lot of meetings tomorrow.”
“Stay. You… You could stay, sleep here, with me.” Ellie offered even though she was almost sure of Steve’s answer.
“I’m not sure it’s a good idea, Angel.”
“We’re at war, we don’t have to do everything as if the world was the same.” Ellie admitted as Steve let out a soft chuckle. “I just want to enjoy the time we have together, before you have to go.”
Steve hesitated for a moment; he wanted to stay, he wanted to sleep with Ellie next to him, hold her in his arm, but part of him knew it wasn’t what he should do, it wasn’t what a gentleman would do. However, Steve and Ellie were a different story, they weren’t like any other couple, they had known each other for so many years and somehow, it didn’t feel rush.
Steve finally nodded and followed Ellie to the bed. He took off his uniform, keeping only his underpants and his undershirt before laying by her side and pulling her against his chest.
“I can’t believe this is happening, you and me…” Ellie whispered.
Steve turned to face her and rested a hand on her cheek, gently stroking it. “We’ll have to go dancing.”
“I’ve only been waiting for you, the right partner.” Ellie smiled softly before Steve dropped his lips to her.
“Me too.”

Chapter five
Tumblr media
Three days went by, and Ellie never received any news from Steve. Peggy had promised to keep her updated if she got a signal from the transponder but so far they had absolutely nothing and Ellie was starting to lose hope. Little positivity she had left thanks to her talks with Peggy over the last few days was now gone and she just felt lost and alone. She kept herself busy with her work, tending to the wounded the best way she could, and filling paperwork when everyone was resting. Things were quiet at the camp so far until Ellie heard loud claps coming from outside the tent. She frowned and turned to another nurse who shrugged as a soldier walked in, out of breath.
“We need medics, we have wounded soldiers who need medical attention!” A soldier announced.
“We’re coming.” Ellie simply said, whipping her hands and following other nurses and medics outside.
There were hundreds of men standing near the entrance of the camp, men who had disappeared weeks ago and for a moment Ellie didn’t understand. As people were rushing around her, she went into nurse mode, talking to a few soldiers and directing them to help carry the wounded to the medical tents. Quickly, her instincts took over and she grabbed a bag of medical supplies. She administered pain killers to those who needed it and started to take care of the wounds of others.
For the next few hours, she did her best to do her job, to patch bullets wounds, fix broken bones or tend to sick soldiers but her mind couldn’t help but wonder about Steve or Bucky. Where were they? Did they make it back? She hadn’t seen any of them and a part of her was still scared that neither of them had made it back.
“Leah, can you keep an eye on everyone for a minute?” Ellie wondered, looking up at her friend who simply nodded.
Ellie finished up a bandage on a young man, barely in his twenties before she stood up and walked to the entrance of the tent. She gave a quick glance around, the most seriously injured soldiers had already been taking care of and she needed to check on the others, but she also needed to find Steve. She needed to ask him about Bucky, she knew there was a chance he would bring back bad news, but she had to know.
“Hi, have you seen Steve Rogers?” Ellie asked the first soldier she crossed path with outside the medical tent.
“He was with Colonel Phillips, near the entrance of the camp.” The soldier explained, pointing out at the big tent and Ellie nodded.
Ellie thanked him, looked around and made her way through the small crowd still reunited. Her heart fastened in her chest; concern visible on her soft features as she searched for the captain. When her eyes landed on his dirt covered face, she let out a loud sigh she didn’t know she was holding. He was there, alive.
“Steve…” Ellie muttered, and the super soldier turned to her, a smile spreading on his lips. “Steve, is he…” But she couldn’t finish her sentence, her throat tightened at the thought of Steve telling her Bucky was gone for good.
Instead of replying, Steve moved a step to the side to let Ellie’s eyes fell on her brother. Bucky was there, dirty and smelly but alive. Her hands flew to her mouth, and she let out a sob.
“Bucky…” Ellie sobbed as she rushed to him, and he pulled her into a hug. For a moment they stayed like that, hugging each other. “I… I thought I’d never see you again…” Ellie admitted, stepping away a little and whipping her tears, sniffling a little.
“You won’t get rid of me so easily. We Barneses are tough, remember?” Bucky smiled, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “But what are you doing here?” Bucky frowned, a little confused.
“I graduated early. I’m officially a nurse.” Ellie stated as she observed Bucky a little closer. He was pale and weak, there was no doubt in that, but what got her worried was the sound of his breathing. “You’re sick.”
“I’m fine, Ellie.”
“No. You’re not. You need some medical attention, Buck.” Ellie observed and glanced at Steve. “Tell him to stop being so stubborn.”
Steve raised both his hand. “Hey, he always listened to you more than me.” He smirked but gave Bucky a knowing look.
“Okay, okay. Fine.” Bucky finally said with a sigh. “But I’m telling you, I’m fine.”
Ellie gave him a look, the one that resemble so much of the one their mother used to give him all the time, that he didn’t argue more and followed her to her own personal tent. He dropped on the camp bed. He was exhausted, struggling a little to breathe, but he would never tell Ellie she was right. Steve stayed in the entrance of the tent, not wanting to invade Ellie’s privacy.
“Okay, take of your shirt.” Ellie told her brother who did as he was told. She tried not to pay attention to the multiple bruises on his chest and grabbed a stethoscope, pressing it against his chest. “Take a deep breathe.”
Bucky took a deep breath but starting coughing, wincing at the pain in his lung. Ellie placed the stethoscope around her neck and touch his neck and forehead. He was burning up.
“You’ve got pneumonia, Buck. I’ll go grab some medication, you laid down and get some rest.” Ellie ordered and before he could reply, she walked out of the tent, Steve hot on her tail.
“Is he gonna be okay? He was in a lab of some sort when I found him.” Steve explained to Ellie, his hands resting on his buckle.
“He’ll be fine, he just need rest, a lot of it. Even if he says he’s fine.” Ellie took a bag and put a few needles, penicillin and other medications in it before she turned to Steve, hesitating a moment. “Do… Do you know what they did to him?”
“No. Not really. He didn’t talk about it. They were put to work, that’s all I know.”
Ellie nodded and for a moment silence set between them. Ellie’s mind went back to that kiss, the one she had initiated when she thought she would never see him again, and now that he was back, she felt awkward. And so did Steve. He didn’t have much time to think about what had happened between them before the plane ride and yet now that he was right in front of her, he couldn’t think about anything else than kissing her again.
“We should…” Ellie pointed at her tent.
“Right, yeah.” Steve nodded.
The captain followed her back to her tent where Bucky was now laying down on the bed, half asleep, his mind racing through what had happened to him over the last few weeks. However, as soon as Ellie passed the doors of the tent, he put a smile on his face. The smile was a fake one and both Steve and Ellie noticed as they exchanged a glance.
“I’ve got some penicillin and some antibiotics. That should help you.” Ellie said softly, sitting on the side on the bed.
“You know how much I hate needles.” Bucky pouted like a five-year-old boy.
“I know, but it’ll make you feel better, I promise.” Ellie explained, stroking his arm.
“Fine, make it quick.”
Ellie pulled a needle out of the bag, sterilized it and as gently as possible she administered Bucky with what he needed. She bent down and pressed a kiss to his forehead.
“Get some rest.” Ellie whispered.
It didn’t take long for Bucky to fall asleep, and Ellie stared at him for a few minutes, he looked so small… She stood up and walked to Steve who was unusually quiet.
“Thanks for saving him…” Ellie looked up at the captain and Steve simply smiled softly. “And for coming back.”
“I told you I would.”
“I know but I thought…” Ellie went quiet for a second and shook her head. “It doesn’t matter. You’re both safe.”
Steve nodded and pulled her into his chest. She snuggled against him for a moment, silence settling between the two. Things were a little awkward between them and for a moment Ellie was worried she had messed up everything between them. Why did she have to kiss him? Why couldn’t she just act like she always did with him? She finally pulled away and glanced at her brother.
“Just keep an eye on him, will you? I have to go back to the medic tent.” Ellie asked Steve.
“Of course.” Steve said, a soft smile on his lips and he watch Ellie walked out.
****
Weeks passed by quickly after Steve saved all those soldiers and he had brought Bucky back. Bucky had recovered from the pneumonia he had caught in Azzano and to Ellie’s surprise he had recovering faster than she expected. In barely two weeks, he had almost fully healed but Ellie still insisted on him resting, which he refused to do.
For the most part of that time, Steve had been busy with Peggy, some of the officers he had rescued and Colonel Phillips planning operations. From the little Ellie knew, he was now part of the fighting team going against Hydra, the Nazi Scientist Division and even if she worried of what it meant, she was relieved he was busy.
Ellie missed him, but since their kiss, she couldn’t keep Steve out of her mind. She wasn’t ready to face what she had done or what she felt for him, and she did her best to keep herself occupied and avoid Steve, which turned out to be easier than she thought as both of them were so busy. She knew she would have to face him at some point, to tell him why she had kissed him, but truth was, she was scared of telling him. She didn’t want things to change between them, she didn’t want to face the fact that she may have ruined their friendship.
Now back in London, Ellie was working in the same building as Steve and Bucky, but luckily their path didn’t cross much and when they did, she always found an excuse to leave. Bucky on his part had noticed something was up with Ellie, he knew her all too well not to notice, but he never pushed or never asked. However, Bucky wasn’t dumb, he knew how her sister felt about Steve, and he suspected something had happened for them to end up avoiding each other.
“Are you coming for a drink?” Peggy’s voice pulled Ellie out of her thoughts.
Ellie raised her head to look at Peggy, looking absolutely gorgeous in that tight red dress hugging her curves perfectly. “Wow, Peg you look beautiful.”
“Well, thank you.” The Agent smiled. “And soon you’ll look perfect, and Steve will only have eyes for you. Come on.”
“Peg… I don’t think I’m coming.” Ellie bit down on her lower lips.
“Oh yes, yes you are.” Peggy shook her head and went through Ellie’s small hotel room closet. She pulled out a very simple little pink dress. “Come on put this on.”
Ellie sighed but stood up from her bed where she was sat and grabbed the dress, walking to her bathroom.
“Have you talk to Steve yet?” Peggy asked a little louder from the room.
“To say what? I don’t know what to say, Peg, he’s my brother’s best friend.” Ellie took of her clothes and pull on the dress her friend had chosen for her.
“To say what you feel. I know Steve doesn’t know how act around women, but you have to talk to him.”
Ellie pulled her long brown hair back and walked back to the room. Peggy smiled at her, approving her outfit as she slipped on black shoes. “I guess I’m as bad as he is then.” Ellie admitted. “Look, in just a few days he’s going to be back on the front and I’m gonna be here, in London. What’s the point of telling him anything if he’s gonna leave?”
“So, you can have him when he comes back home.” Peggy simply stated as she gently squeezed Ellie’s hand in hers.
“I’ll think about it.” Ellie promised, giving Peggy a smile.
The Agent nodded and threw her arm around Ellie’s arm. Quickly, they made their way to the neighbor pub Whip & Fiddle near their hotel, the one where Steve, Bucky and a few other soldiers had decided to spend the night. As soon as the two ladies entered the bar, heads turned to look at them and Ellie felt herself blush. She never liked being the center of attention, but she knew Peggy often had that affect on men, she was a beautiful woman after all. Ellie silently followed Peggy to the back of the bar where Steve and Bucky were sat on stools, and she watched as they both leaned back to look at them approach. As soon as they noticed Ellie and Peggy, they both stood up, facing them.
“Captain.” The Agent Carter spoke.
“Agent Carter.” Steve replied, his eyes glancing at her before landing on Ellie, standing slightly behind the Agent.
“Ma’am.” Bucky saluted as looked up and down at Peggy.
“Howard has some equipment for you to try. Tomorrow morning?” Peggy announced as Steve couldn’t take his eyes of Ellie who felt herself blushed even more, pushing a piece of hair back behind her ear and looking down at the floor.
“Sounds good.” Steve replied, glancing quickly at Peggy.
Peggy looked to her right, her eyes falling on the men Steve had chosen to be in his team, where they resumed to their loud singing. “I see your top squad is prepping for duty.”
Bucky looked back and turned back to Peggy, a charming smile on his lips, a smile that Ellie knew all too well. “You don’t like music?”
“I do, actually.” Peggy turned to Ellie and smirked slightly. “And so does she.”
Ellie looked back up, her eyes landing on Steve who still hadn’t taken his eyes out of her. She is so gorgeous, he thought, his heart beating a little faster in his chest.
“We might even, when this is all over, go dancing.” Peggy added, offering a smile to Bucky.
“Then what are we waiting for?” Bucky asked, turning on his charm.
“The right partner.” Ellie spoke for the first time that evening.
Steve couldn’t help but notice this seemed to be aimed at him. Was she referring to the kiss they had shared? Was she trying to say something to him? Steve hadn’t stopped thinking about her since their kiss, he couldn’t and all he wanted to do at that moment was tasting her lips again. He missed her.
“0800, Captain.” Peggy ordered, taking Ellie’s arm back in hers as she started to walk away.
“Yes ma’am. I’ll be there.” Steve said, his eyes following Ellie as she walked away.
The last thing Ellie heard was her brother’s voice saying, “I’m invisible.”
Her heart was pounding loudly in her chest way and when she sat next to Peggy at the bar, she turned to her and shook her head. “What was that?”
“What was what?” Peggy said innocently, smiling at her friend and ordering them a drink.
“That. Saying we’ll go dancing.”
“Hey, you’re the one who said you were waiting for the right partner. But you know, Steve only had eyes for you in there, it was obvious.”
Ellie felt herself blush again and grabbed the drink the bar tender was handing her. “I’ve always felt invisible with Steve, I mean not in a bad way. He’s always been an amazing friend, we’ve always been close, but I never thought…”
“You never thought he could feel something for you?”
“Well, yes.” Ellie admitted, taking a sip of her drink, and looking up at Peggy.
“I think you have to get use to the idea that he does feel something for you though. And you should stop overthinking, just… Go with it.”
Ellie stayed silent for a while, drinking with Peggy before she got tired. Things had been crazy and busy over the last few weeks, and everything that was going on with Steve wasn’t helping Ellie who struggled to sleep. She wished Peggy a good night and walked out of the pub, wrapping her arms around herself to shield her from the cold. She jumped a little when she felt someone dropped a jacket around her shoulder.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.” Steve softly spoke, offering her a soft smile.
“It’s okay. What are you doing here?” Ellie pulled his jacket around her.
“I was gonna go back to the hotel. Let me walk you back.”
Ellie smiled shyly. “Sure.”
Steve pushed his hands into his pants pocket as a silence settle between them. It was awkward, and for a moment Ellie’s remembered Peggy’s words: stop overthinking, go with it. Why was it so hard though? Why couldn’t she simply tell him how she felt?
“Are you okay, Angel?” Steve broke the silence, looking at the brunette by his side.
“I’m fine, just tired. It’s been a lot lately, you know.” Ellie admitted, glancing quickly at those blue eyes she loved so much.
“Yeah, I know how you feel. But you’re an amazing nurse, Ellie. I’m glad you were here after Azzano, and I know Bucky was too, even if he’s too proud to say it.”
Ellie chuckled slightly. “It’s Buck, I know he would never ask for help unless he’s dying. He likes to play tough.”
“He sure does.”
Silence fell between them again as Steve and Ellie entered the hotel. They reached out Ellie’s floor and stopped in front of her door before she took of Steve’s jacket and handed over back to him.
“Thanks for walking me back.” Ellie whispered with a small smile.
“Anytime.” Steve hesitated for a second before he spoke again. “You looked beautiful by the way, very beautiful.”
“Thanks.” Ellie placed a piece of her hair behind her ear as she always did when she was nervous and felt herself blush. “Goodnight, Steve.”
“Goodnight, Angel.” Without a second thought, he bent down and pressed a kiss to her cheek. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Ellie nodded and entered her hotel room, biting down on her lower lip. Maybe Peggy was right after all, maybe Steve felt more for her than she thought.

Chapter four, part two
Tumblr media
October 1943.
For the few months following his serum injection, instead of being stuck in a lab, Steve decided to make his part and go on tour to promote the war effort. Every night he was on stage selling bullets, pushing people staying in the United States of America to give money for the war effort and promoting war bonds for the Treasury Department. He went from city to city, sleeping in hotel rooms, far from the real action in the war and missing the comfort of his home in New York City, of Ellie. Truth was, he didn’t like his job very much, it wasn’t what he had imagined when he signed up for the serum. Sure, it was better than being stuck in a lab having scientist poking him and draining his blood, but he wished he could do more, he always wanted to do more.
Now he was sitting on the side of the stage he had been standing on a few moments earlier, in front of a crowd of soldiers, five miles away from the front in Italy. They had laughed at him, booed him and after dodging a few tomatoes he had simply walked out of stages as the chorus girls walked back on it. He had always wanted to be there, on the front but that was definitely not how he had imagined doing it.
“Hello, Steve.” A voice raised from behind him. He looked up, turned around and recognised Peggy.
“Hi.” Steve replied in surprise, she was the last person he was expecting to see here.
“Hi.”
“What are you doing here?” Steve wondered, while he stopped drawing.
“Officially, I’m not here at all.” Peggy sat on a box near him. “That was quite a performance.”
“Yeah. Huh.” Steve whipped his nose, bowing down a little to look at his shoes. “I had to improvise a little bit. The crowds I’m used to are usually more…” He looked up, searching for his words. “Twelve.”
“I understand you’re ‘America’s New Hope’.”
“Bonds sales take a 10% bump in every state I visit.” Steve announced, still not looking at Peggy.
“Is that Senator Brandt I hear?”
Steve licked his lips and glanced quickly at Agent Carter. “At least he’s got me doing this. Phillips would have had me stuck in a lab.”
“And these are your only two options? A lab rat or a dancing Monkey?” Peggy asked, looking at the drawing Steve had been working on a few minutes earlier. The drawing of a Monkey wearing his Captain America’s outfit, holding a shield and an umbrella and riding a unicycle. “You were meant for more than this, you know.”
Steve looked at her before he turned back to look in front of him, his mind wondering and getting lost. He hated that he couldn’t do more.
“What?” Peggy asked him, her eyes still on him.
“You know, for the longest time, I dreamt about coming overseas and being on the front lines, serving my country. I finally got everything I wanted and I’m wearing tights.” Steve explained before the horn of an ambulance van could be heard behind him and Peggy.
Steve turned around to watch the vehicle come to a stop in front of the big medical tent while the rain kept on falling heavily. A medic opened the back doors and two others walked out of it, holding a litter with a wounded man laying on it.
“They look like they’ve been through hell.” Steve observed, sadness in his voice.
“These men more than most.” Peggy hesitated for a moment, as Steve glanced at her. “Schmidt sent out a force to Azzano. Two hundred men went up against him, and less than 50 returned. Your audience contained what was left of the 107th. The rest were killed or captured.”
Steve’s face jerked up to look at the Agent as his heart seemed to stop in his chest. “The 107th?” He asked hoping he had miss heard.
“What?”
Without any hesitation, Steve stood up and started running to Colonel Phillips’s tent. “Come on!” He said to Peggy as he followed him, lifting her coat on top of her head to shield herself from the rain.
Bucky. It was the only thing on Steve’s mind at the moment. He needed to know if his best friend was still alive, he needed to find out he was okay. Then, his head went to Ellie who was probably back home missing him and his heart sank even lower. Steve walked into the tent, not even taking a look around him and walked straight to Colonel Phillips who was signing condolences letters at his desk.
“Colonel Phillips.”
“Well, if it isn’t the Star-Sprangled Man with a Plan. What is your plan today?”
“I need the casualty list from Azzano.” Steve explained.
“You don’t get to give me orders, son.” Colonel Phillips shook his head, but Steve was barely listening to him.
“I just need one name, Sergeant James Barnes from the 107th.” Steve replied, looking down at the desk.
The Colonel turned to Peggy who was standing by Steve’s side and pointed the pen he was holding in his hand towards her. “You and I are gonna have a conversation later that you won’t enjoy.”
“Please tell me if he’s alive, sir. B-A-R…” Steve insisted.
“I can spell.” The colonel cut off Steve and for a second, they glanced at each other. Phillips stood from his chair and turned around, looking at the letters in his hands. “I have signed more of these condolence letters today than I would care to count. But the name does sound familiar. I’m sorry.”
Steve heart dropped in his chest. His best friend was gone, probably dead and he had never felt more alone than at that moment.
“Colonel Phillips, we need…” A feminine voice raised as a familiar silhouette appeared in the tent. “Steve…”
Ellie was there, standing there, her hair pulled into a bun on top of her head, wearing a nurse uniform and her hands covered with dried blood.
“Ellie, what are you doing here?” Steve inquired, frowning and wondering what she was doing here.
“My job.” Ellie simply stated, offering him a shy smile.
Her eyes were red and a little puffy and it didn’t take more for Steve to realize that she knew Bucky was gone. He wanted to do was walk up to her and pull her into a hug, but this was neither the place nor the time. Instead, a plan started to form in his head, he wasn’t going to give up.
“What about the others? Are you planning a rescue mission?”
“Yes, it’s called winning the war.”
Steve tear his eyes off Ellie and turned back to the Colonel. “But if you know where they are, why not at least…”
“They’re 30 miles behind the lines through some of the most heavily fortified territory in Europe.” Colonel Phillips cut off Steve, walking to the map and showing an area on it. “We’d lose more men than we’d save. But I don’t except you to understand that because you’re a chorus girl.”
Steve jaw and shoulders clenched. “I think I understand it just fine.”
“Well, then understand it somewhere else. If I read the posters correctly, you got someplace to be in 30 minutes.”
Ellie looked at Steve, his eyes still staring at the map of the area. She knew him well enough to know what he was thinking, he was a stubborn man, and he wasn’t going to go give up that easily. But a part of her felt very uneasy about what he was about to do.
“Yes, sir. I do.” Steve simply replied as he started to walk out of the tent.
Ellie looked at the map, shook her head slightly and exchanged a glance with Peggy before she started following him to another tent containing the stage uniforms.
“Steve. Steve stop.” Ellie said loudly over the sound of the rain falling on the tent.
“Look Ellie, I’ve got to do something. And you. You shouldn’t be here. You should be home in New York, safe.” Steve said softly turning towards her. “You’re not even supposed to have graduated yet. Why are you here?” He asked, a point of worry in his voice.
“I graduated early. And I have every right to be here, just like you do.” Ellie replied, a little bit on the defensive. “I can help.”
“That’s not…” Steve sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose between his fingers. “That’s not what I meant, Ellie. You know that.” He took her hand in his. “But I got to do something. I got to try at least.”
Ellie looked up at him, eyes filling up with tears as she spoke, her voice shaking slightly. “I can’t lose you. Not you too, Steve.”
“You won’t lose me.” The soldier said, stroking her cheek gently before he pressed a kiss to her forehead.
Steve pulled her into a hug and for a moment, they stayed like this simply appreciating being with each other. Ellie was scared, terrified to lose Steve just as she had lost Bucky. She wasn’t ready to lose the only person she had left in her life, but she also knew he wouldn’t change his mind. Steve finally pulled away from her, grabbed a bag and a helmet as Peggy walked into the tent.
“What do you plan to do, walk to Austria?” The Agent asked him, taking of her coat and putting it down on a chair.
“If that’s what it takes.”
“You heard the Colonel. Your friend is most likely dead.” Peggy said calmly.
“You don’t know that.” Steve kept on packing his bag as Peggy exchanged a glance with Ellie who shook her head. She had tried to change his mind.
“Even so, he’s devising a strategy. If he detects…” Peggy tried to explain.
“By the time he’s done that, it could be too late.” Steve interrupted her loudly, anger coming through his voice. He put his leather brown jacket on, grabbed his bag and his shield and started to walk away.
“Steve!” Peggy exclaimed, following him outside of the tent as he headed toward the jeep parked in front of it.
Ellie followed them, feeling completely useless as she watched Steve throw his stuff in the back of a jeep. He stopped for a moment, looked at Ellie before he turned to Peggy.
“You told me you thought I was meant for more than this. Did you mean that?”
“Every word.” Peggy assured him.
“Then you got to let me go.” Steve admitted, stepping into the driver seat of the jeep and for a second Ellie contemplated the idea of going with him, maybe she could help somehow.
Peggy looked at her for a second, and both knew he would never change his mind, she stepped out near him. “I can do more than that.”
Steve looked at Peggy and turned to Ellie who unwillingly nodded. If he wasn’t going to change his mind, at least they could try to help him, make things easier for him. Steve was trained, he had the serum running through his vein, but none of them really knew what if fully did.
“Move.” Peggy told Steve, making him slid to the passenger seat as Ellie climbed into the back of the jeep. There was no chance she would leave them now, not until she knew exactly what Steve was going to do.
Peggy drove in silence. She took a road out of the camp and after about five minutes she turned left, taking a road Ellie hadn’t been on before. After a good twenty minutes, she came to a stop on a small airport tarmac and immediately recognized the silhouette standing a few meters away from them. Howard Stark. Ellie stepped out of jeep as Steve grabbed his stuff in the back and followed Peggy.
“Stark, we need your help.” Peggy announced, glancing back at Steve and Ellie.
“Well, hello there. I don’t believe we have met.” Howard pushed his sunglasses on top of his head, looking at Ellie. “Howard Stark.”
Howard offered Ellie his hand but before she could shake it Steve spoke loudly. “Stark. Now is not the time!”
“Right, right.” Howard winked at Ellie who blushed and Steve rolled his eyes, feeling slightly jealous. “What do you need?” The scientist asked, not even questioning Peggy or Steve’s intention.
Howard Stark was a genius, sure he was stubborn, hot headed and a womanizer but when it came to Peggy or Steve, he would do anything to help them and for that, they were both grateful. Peggy explained her plan to Stark, asking him to be their pilot and without even a second thought, he agreed. Peggy and Howard stepped away to prepare the plane as Ellie stayed back a little, sat on a large box in the air-shed, anxiety and fear running through her brain.
The soldier quickly glanced at the Agent and the Scientist who were both too busy to pay them attention and he stepped closer to her squatting down in front of her. He gently grabbed her hands to stop her from twisting nervously her fingers as she always did.
“Hey… Ellie, look at me.” Steve knew what was going through her brain, he could read her like an open book, always had. She looked up at him, her blue eyes meeting his. “I’ll be fine.”
“You don’t know that.” Ellie whispered, squeezing Steve’s hands as the man stayed silent. “Promise me…” She sniffled. “Promise me, you’ll be careful.”
“I promise you.” Steve gently whipped a tear from her cheek. “And I promise if I find Bucky, I’ll bring him back.”
Ellie nodded slightly and she pushed a piece of hair away from his forehead. She was so terrified to lose him too, and for a second, she wanted to tell him what he meant to her, she wanted to tell him how much she loved him, but she couldn’t find the words. Truth was, Steve was scared too. He didn’t know if he would make it out alive, he didn’t even know exactly what he was walking into, but he had to try to save those men, he would never forgive himself if he didn’t. He looked at Ellie, memorising her face, every single part of those features he loved so much.
“Please come back to me…” Ellie whispered.
Without realising, he brought his face closer to hers, but she was the one who made the first move. She shyly pressed her lips to his, closing her eyes. The kiss was tender, so full of emotions and fears on both ends.
“Hey Cap, we need to go.” Stark’s voice raised from behind, interrupting them and Steve pulled away.
The soldier stood up and gave a last look to Ellie before he walked to the plane. Ellie wrapped her arms around herself as she watched the plane take off, an unease feeling twisting her guts. She didn’t like this; she didn’t like this at all and yet there was absolutely nothing she could do. She wasn’t a soldier; she couldn’t go help Steve even when it was all she wanted to do. Instead, she had to stay back, she had to stay at the base, and she already knew she would be losing herself in her job. There were so many people injured, so many soldiers she had to help that maybe she would be to busy to think about Steve behind enemy lines, alone.
It was almost an hour later, when Peggy’s voice raised from the radio she had in her hand. “Steve’s been dropped behind the line. We’re making our way back.”
“I’m waiting for you at the hangar.” Ellie stated on the radio.
They landed back an hour later; it was completely dark out by then and Ellie couldn’t help but notice the graze of bullets on the Stark’s industries plane. She looked at Stark and Carter walking out of the engine and made their way towards her.
“I guess I’ll see you ladies later.” Stark shot a wink to Agent Carter and walked away.
Ellie followed Peggy back to the jeep. She knew they would both be in trouble as soon as they would be back to the camp, but honestly, they didn’t really care. It was Steve’s decision, and if he managed to save soldiers, then it was a risk he was willing to take and both women were ready to do anything to help him.
“So, you and Steve.” Peggy said quietly, starting the jeep’s engine and driving away.
“What about it?”
“How long have been in love with him?” Peggy kept her eyes on the road.
“I’m no…” Ellie sighed and closed her eyes for a second, there was no point of denying it. “A long time.”
“But you never told him.”
“No. He’s my brother’s best friend. If Bucky knew how I felt about Steve…” Ellie shook her head.
Steve probably didn’t even feel the same way, he had never seen her that way and he never will. Even when he was still a little guy, Steve had never had eyes for her, she had always only been Bucky’s little sister. Sure they had kissed, twice now, but they never talked about it and she knew it wouldn’t change anything.
“Wait. Barnes. Your last name is Barnes.” Peggy said, glancing at Ellie. “Sergeant James Barnes is your brother.” She had never made the connexion before.
“Yes. And it doesn’t matter how I feel about Steve because he will never feel the same way, especially not now, not with the serum.”
“That’s where you’re wrong. I see the way Steve looks at you.” Peggy parked the car and turned the ignition off. “And I think it’s been a while for him too. He already talked about you all the time, way before the serum.”
Ellie shrugged. “It doesn’t matter Peggy. We…” She hesitated for a second, stepping out of the car before she looked at the Agent. “We’re in a middle of a war. It doesn’t matter how I feel about him.”
“It does. Love in the time of war is something beautiful, Ellie. Don’t wait too long to let it come into your life, because I think it’s actually the best time to do it.”
With those words Peggy offered her a smile and walked away, leaving Ellie with her thoughts. Was she right? Was Steve really looking at her differently? She didn’t want to think about it, not now, not when she wasn’t even sure he would make it back alive.

Chapter four, part one.

“This way.” Agent Carter said, stepping out of the car and leading Steve and Ellie toward the Antiques shop.
“What are we doing here?” Steve asked, looking at the display.
“Follow me.”
Agent Carter entered the shop, followed by Ellie and then Steve who placed his military hat on his head. He closed the door behind him, and Ellie took a look around. The place looked exactly like an Antiques shop, filled with old objects and furniture.
“Wonderful weather this morning, isn’t it?” An old lady entering the main room said, looking at Peggy.
“Yes, but I always carry an umbrella.” Peggy simply stated and the old lady in a pink cardigan walked behind the counter, pressed a button under it and Peggy led Steve and Ellie to the back of the shop. Suddenly, the large book shell in front of them split open, revealing some kind of huge underground bunker. Ellie wasn’t surprised, not really. If what Steve had told her and the project was a secret, it only made sense for it to be hidden from the public eyes. She quickly exchanged a glance with Steve and stood behind him, following them through the corridor as they passed a few guards along the way.
They walked through double steel doors and stopped on top of a stair case leading to huge laboratory, or at least what looked like a laboratory. Nurses and scientist all stopped and turned to look at Steve who suddenly felt a little overwhelmed. Ellie gently grabbed his hand and gave it a squeeze before everyone moved back to their occupation and Peggy led them to the bottom of the stairs. If Ellie had felt like it was a bad idea for her to be here, she felt even more like it at that moment. Maybe she should have stayed home after all, wait for Steve there.
“Good morning.” Doctor Erskine said as Steve walked toward him, shaking his head, a smile on his lips. A photography flash pulled Ellie out of her thoughts, and she stopped behind Peggy. “Please, not now.” Erskine added, shaking his head.
The Doctor looked up at Agent Carter, giving her a small nod, and then at Ellie and frowned. Shyly, she offered him a smile and it didn’t take a lot for Erskine to understand why this stranger stood there. From the few chats he had with Steve throughout the last week it wasn’t hard to guess who she was, but he thought best not to comment on her presence here.
“Are you ready?” The Doctor asked Steve whose eyes flickered to the pod and nodded. “Good. Take off your shirt, your tie, and your hat.” He continued, pointing at each of the items as Steve executed the order and handed them to a nurse standing nearby, whispering a small thank you.
Once he was shirtless, Steve stepped on the small stairs by the pod he had to lay in and sat on the edge of it. His heart was beating loudly and way too fast in his chest. He looked at Ellie for a few seconds, as she smiled at him tenderly, giving him the courage to go through it. I can do this, he thought while laying down on the cold surface, trying to calm his nerves and to be as comfortable as possible.
“Comfortable?” Erskine asked, stepping closer to him.
“It’s a little big.” Steve admitted, and Erskine chuckled. “You save me any of that schnapps?”
Erskine popped a shoulder. “Not as much as I should have. Sorry. Next time.” He stepped back from the steps and spoke louder. “Mr. Stark, how are your levels?”
“Levels at 100%.” Stark confirmed, walking past Ellie, Peggy and stopping by Steve’s side.
“Good.” The Doctor pushed his glasses back in place.
“We may dim half the lights in Brooklyn, but we are ready as we’ll ever be.” Stark explained as nurses started to prep Steve up for the procedure, tying straps around his chest.
Ellie didn’t like it, she felt herself growing more and more nervous, playing with the little locket around her neck which contained a picture of Bucky, Steve and her.
“Ladies?” Erskine turned to Ellie and Peggy. “Don’t you think you would be more comfortable in the booth?” He asked pointing at the small sitting area hiding behind a glass on the upper level.
“Yes, of course. Sorry.” Peggy mumbled as she turned back and started to walk away.
However, Ellie didn’t move, she couldn’t, she felt uneasy and as Steve turned his head toward her, they eye locked for a second. Without any hesitation and a sudden burst of courage, she walked to him, leaned over and quickly pressed her lips to his. Ellie was surprised by her own actions, but it was nothing compared to Steve’s surprise. Before he could realize what was happening, Ellie turned around, climbed the stairs to join Peggy in the booth and the only thing Steve could do was watch her walk away. His mind raced through what had just happened and he really hoped the procedure was not going to kill him.
A high pitch noise made Ellie winced and Doctor Erskine’s voice raised in the microphone. “Do you hear me? Is this on? Ladies and Gentlemen, today we take not another step towards annihilation, but the first step on the path of peace. We begin with a series of microinjections into the subject’s major muscle groups.” Erskine explained as Ellie took a sit by Peggy’s side. “The serum infusion will cause immediate cellular change. And then, to stimulate growth, the subject will be saturated with Vita-Rays.”
The voice of the doctor stopped, and Ellie looked through the glass as people started the procedure. Her leg nervously bounced, her fingers still playing with her locket when she felt a hand on her arm. She turned her head and Peggy offered her a soft reassuring smile before she turned back to look at the pod pulling up and closing the door in front of Steve. Then, bright light started to shine through the pod small window and Ellie felt like she was about to be sick, but it was when she heard Steve screaming in pain she couldn’t take it anymore. She stood up and walked out of the booth, her voice getting stuck in her throat.
“Steven!” Erskine yelled, stepping close to the pod.
“Shut it down!” Agent Carted ordered loudly as Ellie watched her step out of the booth. “Shut it down!”
“Kill the reactor, Mr. Stark!” Erskine said walking toward the commands.
“Please stop it, you’re hurting him!” Ellie finally said, coming down the stairs, panic through her voice.
“Turn it off! Kill it! Kill the reactor!” Erskine kept on yelling in the middle of the agitation.
“No!” Steve’s voice suddenly raised from the pod, stopping everyone in their actions. “Don’t! I can do this!”
Ellie’s heart tightened in her chest as she watched Stark exchanged a look with the doctor and turning back the command. “Eighty… Ninety… That’s 100%.” Stark announced and Ellie closed her eyes.
When she opened back her eyes, all the lights were out and there was nothing shinning through the pod window anymore. Ellie took a few steps forward, her heart beating like crazy in her chest.
“Mr. Stark?” The Doctor asked and then the pod opened.
If Ellie hadn’t known Steve as well as she did, she probably would not have recognized him. He was physically nothing like his old self. He was a pile of muscle, much broader and much taller that he had ever been, not that it changed anything for Ellie after all. It had worked. She couldn’t believe it.
Steve couldn’t remember the last few minutes, he didn’t know if he had lost consciousness, but suddenly everything around him felt… Weird. The first thing he noticed was his earing was much better, he could hear everything so clearly around him. He could also breathe, properly. There was no pressure against his lungs, no shaky breath and everything felt so much… Clearer.
“Steven. Steven.” Steve heard, as a few pairs of hands grabbed his arms, helping him out of the pod.
When he opened his eyes and took a look around him for the first time, nothing was blurry. He could every single person faces, every details so clearly. There were a few chatters around him but he couldn’t quite figure out what everyone was saying. He felt good, really good, but still a little bit foggy.
“How do you feel?” Peggy asked him, stepping in front of him.
As Steve looked up, he realized he was taller than everyone presents around him. “Taller.” He simply stated, still trying to catch his breath.
“You look taller.” Peggy informed him, reaching to touch his chest, but pulling her hand back and handing him a tee-shirt.
“Where’s…” Steve started but his eyes finally fell on Ellie, standing a little further, worry on her face.
“Hi…” Ellie whispered, reaching his side and Steve offered her one of the smiles she loved so much. At least that hadn’t changed she thought.
“Hey.”
For a second, they stared at each other, at lost with words. Steve’s mind went back to the kiss, and all of the sudden he was very aware of the taste of her lips, the way they had felt on his and he wanted to kiss her again but he was too focused on examining her features as it was the first time he ever seen her. She was more gorgeous than he remembered. Ellie on her side couldn’t keep looking at him, at how much had changed in such a short time. She never cared about Steve’s physique, but she was glad to know that if it had worked at least, he wouldn’t have anymore health issues.
Ellie was about to say something when there was a huge explosion coming from the booth and she send to the floor.
“Stop him!” Ellie heard someone yell before two-gun shots were shot.
When she looked up, Steve was already up, running to Doctor Erskine who had been shot. Staying down, she made her way to Steve and Erskine, looking at his wounds. She may not have been a certified nurse yet, but she knew full well it didn’t look good. She pressed her hands to one the wounds, trying to stop the bleeding as the doctor pointed his finger to Steve’s chest before his head rolled to the side. He was gone. Ellie looked up at Steve and shook her head as his eyes filled with anger.
“Steve…” Ellie didn’t have time to say more before Steve was up on his feet, running toward danger. Steve was being Steve… The serum had certainly not changed that.
Ellie sighed, other nurses gathering around her. “He’s gone.” She announced, standing up, her hands full of the Doctor’s blood.
****
It took hours for Steve to make his way back to the hidden base in New York. Ellie had helped tend to the few military agents who had been hurt in the bombing, she had helped clean up the place, trying to keep her mind busy but she was worried. When Steve had left to run after the Nazi spy he had been unarmed and not even sure that the serum had properly worked on him despite the obvious physical changes. So, when Steve appeared she straightened up and walked up to him.
“Steve, are you okay?” Ellie asked him, checking for injuries but he didn’t seem to have any.
“I’m fine, Liz.” Steve reassured her, offering her a smile and she let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding.
“He’s here because we need to run some test on him. And you should have gone home miss Barnes.” Peggy explained, stepping by his side.
“I… Huh, I helped. There were a few people wounded and I’m training to be a nurse, so I just thought…” Ellie started, in order to justify her presence.
“A nurse? I didn’t know.”
“Maybe she can stay.” Steve offered, turning to Peggy who looked at him then at Ellie.
“Fine. Follow me.”
Once again, Ellie followed Peggy and Steve in silence, looking at her friend’s back. He looked so different and a part of that scared her. She didn’t want him to change, she wanted him to stay the man he always had, the one she had always loved.
“Sit down, we’ll start with some blood tests.” Peggy explained, taking Steve’s file from the desk.
“I can do it.” Ellie offered. She couldn’t stay still; she couldn’t sit without doing anything so if she could be helpful for something she would be happy to do it.
Peggy inspected her face for a moment and nodded to the other nurse in the room who immediately walked away. Ellie slipped on a white blouse, washed her hands and grabbed the kit she needed as Steve took a sit on the edge of the medical bed. The soldier pulled his sleeve up and looked at Ellie as she cleaned the crook of his arm and, as gently as possible, she pushed the needle into his skin. She saw him wince slightly.
“Sorry.” Ellie whispered.
“It’s okay, Angel.” Steve smiled and for a moment silence fell over the room.
Peggy was studying Steve’s file, trying to think about where to go from there, without Doctor Erskine, Ellie was busy changing the tube to withdraw enough blood from Steve and Steve was lost in his mind, thinking about what had happened when he chased down the Nazi spy. He had been able to do things he had never done before.
“Think you got enough?” Steve asked when he felt Ellie pulling the needle out of his arm.
“Any hope of reproducing the program is locked in your genetic code.” Peggy explained as Steve pulled his sleeve down and stood up. “But without Dr. Erskine, it would take years.”
“He deserved more than this.” Steve commented.
“If it could work only once, he’d be proud it was you.” Peggy admitted, exchanging a look with Steve and offering him a soft smile.
“I think she’s right Steve. You were chosen for a reason.” Ellie agreed and he looked at her, giving her a small smile.
Steve’s sight went back to the window in front of him as Colonel Phillips walked in the underground room where Howard Stark was studying the submarine they had taken from the Nazi spy.
“Colonel Phillips, my committee is demanding answers.” The man walking behind to the Colonel said and Ellie recognised him as the senator Brandt.
“Great. Why don’t we start with how a German spy got a ride to my secret installation in your car?” The Colonel stated before stopping to look at Stark. “What we got here?”
“Speaking modestly, I’m the best mechanical engineer in this country. But I don’t know what’s inside this thing or how it works. We’re not even close to this technology.”
“Then who is?” Senator Brandt asked.
“Hydra.” Colonel Phillips answered. “I’m sure you’ve been reading our briefings.”
“I’m on a number of committees, Colonel.”
“Hydra is the Nazi deep-science division.” Peggy explained, walking towards the men, followed by Steve and Ellie. The Senator took his hat off of his head as Peggy continued. “It’s led by Johann Schmidt. But he has much bigger ambitions.”
“Hydra is practically a cult.” Colonel Phillips added. “They worship Schmidt. They think he’s invincible.”
“So, what are you going to do about it?” Senator Brandt asked as Ellie stopped by Steve’s side.
“I spoke to the President this morning. As of today, the SSR is being retasked.” Phillips explained, walking toward the two women and Steve, talking directly to Peggy.
“Colonel?” Agent Carter frowned slightly.
“We are taking the fight to Hydra. Pack your bags, Agent Carter. You too, Stark.” The colonel turned to give a glance at the engineer before turning back toward the agent. “We’re flying to London tonight.”
Steve glanced quickly at Peggy and turned to the Colonel, standing tall. “Sir? If you’re going after Schmidt, I want in.”
“You’re an experiment. You’re going to Alamogordo.”
Steve sighed slightly, his heart dropping in his chest, and he glanced at Peggy and Ellie. He was not going to give up without a fight, not now that he could fight. “The serum worked.”
“I asked for an army and all I got was you. You are not enough.” Colonel Phillips emphasized, and he turned back and started to walk away.
Ellie’s hand dropped to Steve’s forearm. She was mad at the Colonel Phillips for not giving Steve a chance, especially since he was right, the serum had worked. At least for now. Steve jaw clenched and he looked down for a second.
“With all due respect to the Colonel, I think we may be missing the point. I’ve seen you in action, Steve. More importantly, the country’s seen it.” Senator Brandt said, stopping in front of Steve. “Paper.” He grabbed the newspaper his man handed him and showed Steve the front page where his picture was put up under the title Nazis in New York. Mystery man saves child. “The enlistment lines have been around the block since your picture hit the newsstands. You don’t take a soldier, a symbol like that, and hide him in a lab.”
Steve took a look at the newspaper and suddenly felt his hopes back up. Was Senator Brandt giving him a chance to fight?
“Son.” The Senator slipped his hand on Steve shoulder and pulled him to walk with him. “Do you want to serve your country on the most important battlefield of the war?”
Steve stopped, speaking very seriously. “Sir, that’s all I want.”
“Then, congratulations. You just got promoted.” The Senator offered Steve his hand and he quickly shook it in his, a small smile appearing on his lips. “I’ll send a car for you tomorrow and we can discuss this further.”
Steve nodded and watched the Senator walk away before he turned back to smile at Ellie who was nervously biting the inside of her cheek.
“I guess this is goodbye for now, Steve.” Peggy passed by, standing by his side a second and she nodded.
“Goodbye Peggy.” Steve offered her a smile before she left the room.
For a moment silence fell in the room where Ellie and Steve were the only one left. “I guess you made it, Soldier.” Ellie spoke softly.
“I guess I did.” Steve smiled and slipped his arm around her shoulders. “Should we get out of here while I can?”
“Yes, let’s go back home.”
Without a word, they both walked out of the secret facility and took a car back to Ellie’s apartment. Steve got lost in his thoughts, trying to get his head wrapped around what he just had been through. It had been a long day, but he was glad Ellie was there, by his side.

Chapter three
Tumblr media
“Recruits, attention!” A womans voice raised a few meters away from Steve was standing in his army uniform.
Steve had arrived earlier that day at the training camp in Lehigh in New Jersey. He was filled with a mixed of emotions, fear, apprehension, but most of all excitement. Saying his goodbye to Ellie had been hard, really hard, but he was glad he was finally here, doing the training and starting to do his part for the war.
“Gentlemen, I’m Agent Carter. I supervise all operation for this division.” The woman added, walking toward the recruits standing in line.
Steve looked at her quickly, she was beautiful, wearing a khaki army uniform, her hair perfectly pulled away from her face and her lips painted in red.
“What’s with the accent, Queen Victoria?” One of the soldiers asked, a smirk of deviance on his face. “I thought I was signing up for the U.S. Army.”
“What’s your name, soldier?” Agent Carter asked him, turning to face him.
“Gilmore Hodge, Your Majesty.”
“Step forward, Hodge.” Carter ordered him.
Hodge stepped forward, looking back at the soldier standing next to him, rolling his eyes. Steve hated bullies, and that man was clearly one. A man too damn proud to take orders from a woman.
“Put your right foot forward.” Carter added, always keeping her cool.
Hodge once more did exactly what she asked and spoke. “We gonna wrassle? ‘Cause I got a few moves I know you’ll like.”
Hodge winked at Carter but before he could say anything else, she punched him straight in the face sending him to the ground and Steve couldn’t hold back the proud smile spreading on his lips. He liked her very much already.
“Agent Carter!” A man coming out of a jeep exclaimed loudly and agent Carter straightened up.
“Colonel Phillips.” Carter turned to face the colonel, saluting him.
“I can see that you are breaking in the candidates. That’s good!” The colonel spoke, walking toward her and the recruits. “Get your ass up out of that dirt and stand in that line at attention till somebody comes and tells you what to do.”
“Yes, sir!” Hodge stood up, straight up.
“General Patton has said that wars are fought with weapons, but they are won by men.” The colonel started, walking along the line of standing recruits and Steve didn’t let go of him of one second. “We are going to win this war because we have the best... men.” He hesitated, looking at Steve before he glanced at Doctor Erskine standing next to Agent Carter. “And because they’re gonna get better. Much better. The Strategic Scientific Reserve is an allied effort made up of the best minds in the free world. Our goal is to create the best army in history. But every army starts with one man. At the end of this week, we will choose that man. He will be the first in a new breed of super-soldier. And they will escort Adolf Hitler to the gates of Hell.”
Super-soldiers, that was why he had been given a chance, why Doctor Erskine had offered him a pass. Steve knew it was his only chance to get what he wanted, and he certainly wasn’t going to waste it.
For the following week, Steve did his best. He trained as hard as he could, but most of all he stayed true to himself. If Steve wasn’t a big guy and really struggled with his training, on the intellectual and human level he was obviously one of the best. If Colonel Phillips still wasn’t agreeing with his presence here, Doctor Erskine was only comforted in the fact that he had made the right choice by giving Steve a chance.
On the final day of training, Steve was amongst the other recruits, struggling to go through God knows how many push ups. Every single part of his body was hurting, he was tired, exhausted, but there was no way in hell he was gonna give up now, not after everything he had to get exactly where he was.
“Up!” Agent Carter ordered.
Steve raised to his feet, trying to catch his breath but there was no time for it as they started to do jumping jacks. Steve felt like he was about to collapse to the floor, or be sick, and yet he pushed back, again, and again, and followed others recruits.
“Grenade!” Colonel Phillips yelled as a little metal grenade rolled down on the floor to the middle of the group.
“Move, move, move!” The recruits yelled, running away from it as Steve did the opposite.
Before he could even think about it, Steve ran toward the grenade and jumped on top of it. He rolled his body into a ball and yelled. “Get away! Get back!” Steve thought this was the end and a clear image of Ellie appeared in head. She was standing in front of him, looking at him through her gorgeous blue eyes with that warm smile he loved so much curled on her lips as she placed a piece of her hair behind her ear. But nothing happened and when he looked up, every pair of eyes around was one him.
“It was a dummy grenade. All clear. Back in formation.” Steve heard someone say and he suddenly felt a little stupid.
Steve looked up at Agent Carter, standing in front of him, a proud smile on her face. “Is this a test?” He asked even if he was pretty sure of the answer. A simple look at Doctor Erskine’s face, who smirked proudly, made him think he might have actually made the right choice by following his instinct.
“Alright ladies, everyone in line!” Agent Carter ordered.
Steve pushed himself up from the ground, still trying to catch his breath and process was had just happened. If this grenade had been real, his last thoughts went towards Ellie, the girl he had liked for months, years even, and who didn’t know about it. He joined all the other recruits stood in line and straightened himself up. He quickly glances at Doctor Erskine and Agent Carter exchanging a few words before the Agent nodded.
“The decision has been made.” Agent Carter announced, walking toward the group. “All of you may pack your bags you will be reassigned to your new unites and will continue training. Except for you Rogers.” She added, stopping in front of the blond man who felt his heart banging in his chest. “Congratulation, Soldier.” She offered him a soft smile before he walked away.
He had been chosen. Steve couldn’t quite believe what he just happened, but it was happening and he exchanged a simple glance with the Erskine. He was going to become a super-soldier.
****
Steve didn’t sleep much that night, he was too nervous for it. The previous night he had a talk with Doctor Erskine and his words kept on turning into his head: “The serum amplifies everything that is inside. So, good becomes great. Bad becomes worse. This is why you were chosen. Because a strong man, who has known power all his life, will lose respect for that power. But a weak man knows the value of strength and knows compassion.” He had been chosen because he was a good man, not a perfect soldier and Erskine had made him promise to stay that way, to stay true to himself.
Sat in the car that drove the streets of New York, Steve grew even more nervous. He knew this could fail, but he was hopeful, he always was hopeful that what life had taught him.
“I know this neighborhood. I got beat up in that alley.” Steve pointed out, showing a small alley while they passed by. “And that parking lot. And behind that diner.” He added, looking down at his hands.
“Did you have something against running away?” Agent Carter wondered a fond smile on her face.
Steve shook his head and looked up to glance at her. “You start running, they’ll never let you stop. You stand up, you push back. They can’t say no forever, right?”
“I know a little of what that’s like, to have every door shut in your face.” Carter agreed softly with him.
“I guess I just don’t know why you’d want to join the Army if you were a beautiful dame.” Steve started before he realized what he had just said. “Or a… A woman. An agent. Not a dame.” He was only making things worse as Peggy frowned at him. “You are beautiful, but...”
“You have no idea how to talk to a woman, do you?” The agent shook her head, the smile spreading a little more on her lips.
“I think this is the longest conversation I’ve had with one. Except for my best friend’s sister, but I’ve known her since we were kids.” Steve admitted with an awkward chuckle. “Women aren’t exactly lining up to dance with a guy they might step on.”
“You must have danced.”
“Well, asking a woman to dance always seemed so terrifying. And the past few years, it just…” Steve shrugged, his mind running to Ellie. “Didn’t seem to matter that much. I figure I’d wait.”
“For what?” Peggy asked softly.
“The right partner.” Steve confessed and for a moment silence fell over in the car. “Can we make a quick stop?” He inquired, recognizing they weren’t far from the Barnes’s apartment.
Agent Carter looked at her watch and nodded. “Sure, we have some time.”
Steve smiled at her and gave the driver the direction to Ellie’s apartment. He needed to see her before the procedure, he needed to talk to her, to explain what was going to happen to him and in case something happened to him… Well he needed her to know, that’s all. On top of this, Steve knew she was the only one that could calm his nerve right now, and truth be told, he missed her dearly in the last week.
When the car came to a stop in front of the familiar building, he recognized Ellie’s figure right away as she was talking to the owner of the small shop a few doors away. He glanced at Peggy who nodded.
“I’ll wait for you here, don’t take too long. We can’t be late.” Peggy told him, offering him a smile as she noticed his eyes sparkle in a way she had never seen before.
“Yes m’am.” Steve replied and he stepped out of the vehicle, looked right and left before he crossed the road to meet Ellie. “Hey Ellie.” He greeted her, the loving smile he had just for her already spread on his lips.
At the sound of such a familiar voice, Ellie turned around to see Steve, standing in front of her in his army uniform. “Stevie!” She squealed, pulling him into a hug, wrapping her arms around his neck, as he let out a chuckle. “What are you doing here? I thought you were at training camp.”
“I am, I mean was. It’s a long story, I’ll explain everything in a second.” Steve said looking at her. She was more beautiful than ever, wearing a dark blue pinafore style pants and a simple white blouse, her hair cascading down on her shoulders.
“Let’s get inside.” Ellie offered, taking his hand and pulling Steve with her.
Steve took a quick glance back at Peggy in the car across the street and Ellie noticed. She looked back and her heart tightened when she looked at the beautiful agent smiling back at Steve. Ellie swallowed hard and smiled to keep the appearances. Steve was gone for a few weeks and he already found a women… A few seconds later, she stepped into her apartment, Steve right behind her.
“Do you want some tea?” Ellie asked him, dropping the bag of grocery she had been holding on the kitchen counter.
“Actually, I don’t have a lot of time. I just wanted to see you before… Well, before everything.” Steve explained, leaning back onto the kitchen counter near Ellie.
“Before everything?” Ellie frowned in confusion.
“Yes. You know when I told you Doctor Erskine gave me a chance to join the army, I didn’t know it yet, but it was to join a special branch of it. The SSR, Strategic Scientific Reserve. At the end of the first week of training they wanted to choose someone for their project Rebirth.” Steve started to explain.
“Project Rebirth. You’ve lost me, Stevie.” Ellie shook her head, all her attention now turned to her friend.
“It’s a super-soldier program. Whoever they chose would go under a procedure to become one.”
“Super-soldier? Really?” Ellie chuckled, replacing a piece of her hair behind her ear. “Is that a joke?”
“No. I’m serious, Ellie. Doctor Erskine has developed a serum that would enhance everything in my body. Look I don’t know how it works exactly, but it’s real and I’ve been chosen for the procedure.”
“So, you’re telling me that you… You’re about to become a super-soldier?”
“Yes.” Steve smiled proudly but he saw Ellie’s doubt. “If it works this could be something… Wonderful. This could change everything Liz.”
“That’s what I’m afraid of…” Ellie whispered to herself before she sighed softly. “Are you sure about this Steve?”
“I’m nervous as hell but I’m sure. This is my chance to make a difference. If it works, it probably means no more health issues Liz.”
For a moment, there was a silence between Steve and Ellie. Steve was nervous, yes, but he was excited of what it could mean for him, for his life. Ellie on her end wasn’t so sure how she felt about it. She was scared that Steve hopes were too high, and he would end up disappointed, or that he would end up hurt somehow. She didn’t trust the process, or this doctor, or the army for that matter. They had already taken her brother away from her.
“I thought you’d be happier.” Steve whispered and it was he’s turn to sigh, crossing his arm in front of his chest.
“I am. Steve, I am. I’m glad they chose you because they clearly made the right choice, I’m just…” Ellie started but at the look Steve gave her she decided not to tell him how scared she really was. “I’m happy for you, Stevie. You’ll be a great super-soldier, I’m sure of that.” She smiled softly and Steve face split into a grin.
“Thanks. I’m nervous.”
“It’s understandable.” Ellie reached out to him and straightened his tie, glancing quickly at his lips. “I told you you’d look good in the uniform.” She added to try to clear the air a little more.
Steve chuckled and felt his cheek turn red before he glanced at the clock on the wall. “I have to go. I’m gonna be late.”
Ellie nodded. “I’ll come down with you.”
Steve and Ellie made their way back to the street which was a little emptier than it had been before and Ellie’s eyes fell on the car waiting for him, or more precisely on the person inside.
“She’s pretty.” Ellie said, nodding the Agent Carter, her body tensing up a little.
Steve turned around to glance at Peggy and he frowned. “Yeah. Huh… I guess, she’s a beautiful dame.”
“I’m happy for you Stevie.” Ellie said, a forced smile he knew all too well curling on her lips.
Steve frowned a little more, confused by the young Barnes reaction and he opened his mouth to say something but before he could say anything Peggy’s voice raised next to him. “Steve, we have to go or we’re gonna be late.”
“Yes m’am.” Steve answered and he was about to walk away when a thought came through his head. He turned back to Ellie and spoke. “Come with us.”
“What?” Ellie opened her eyes in surprise.
“Steve, she can’t come with us.” Peggy stated firmly but gently. “This project is top secret.”
“Well, she kind of knows everything about it.” Steve pointed out, letting out a chuckle. “Sorry Agent Carter.”
Peggy sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. “Fine, but you get in trouble because of this, it’s not my problem.” She added before she smiled softly at Ellie. “I’m Agent Carter by the way. But you can call me Peggy. I have a feeling we might see a lot of each other in the future.”
“Elizabeth Barnes, but everyone calls me Ellie.” Ellie offered in return, shaking the hand Peggy was offering her.
“Now, let’s go.” Peggy ordered turning to Steve and she walked back to the car.
“Are you sure you want me to come?” Ellie asked Steve.
“Absolutely. And you know, you could always disguise yourself as a nurse if you need.” Steve chuckled and Ellie rolled her eyes.
“I am a nurse. Well, soon to be anyway.”
“I know.” Steve smiled proudly, offering his arm out to her and Ellie slipped her hand under it, following him across the street.
Steve opened the door for her, and she slipped into the passenger seat before he joined her. Peggy had taken a seat in the front, next to the driver. As soon as everyone was settled in, the car started to drive away.
“Looks like you might go dancing sooner than you excepted private Rogers.” Peggy observed, giving him a glance in the small mirror.
Steve wasn’t sure what she meant by it, or maybe he just didn’t want to believe it. Ellie frowned slightly, not entirely sure she understood what was happening, but she stayed silent, her eyes flickering to the window, as they passed all those streets that were so familiar to her and Steve. She looked back at him and suddenly noticed he was nervously twisting his military hat in his hands. She smiled to herself and slowly wrapped her hand around one of his.
“It’s gonna be okay, Stevie.” Ellie whispered quietly just for him to hear.
“I know.” Steve looked up, his gaze meeting hers. “Thanks for coming. It’s always easier when you’re here.” He admitted, squeezing her hand.
“You know, I’ll always be. Even when you won’t need me because you’re a super-soldier.” Ellie smirked in a teasing voice and Steve let out a chuckle.
“I’ll always need you. Even if I’m super-soldier.”
Ellie was about to say something else when the car came to a full stop. They were in front of an antiques shop, which was odd, and they both exchanges a glance, not sure why they had stopped here. But after all, a secret project couldn’t be held into somewhere obvious right?

Chapter two
Tumblr media
The next morning when Ellie woke up, she had barely managed to sleep a few hours because of the nightmares, and she felt exhausted. For a moment she contemplated the idea to stay in bed, but she needed to keep her mind busy, she needed to stop imagining all those scenarios running through her head. So slowly, she pushed herself out of bed, rubbing her eyes before she stepped into the shower. She stayed there for a while, letting the hot water running on her body and relaxing the muscle in her body. She finally stepped out of the show and pulled on a red skirt with a white blouse, put on some light make up and painted her lips of a light red color.
She had slow morning after that. She went to the grocery store only a few blocks from her apartment, to buy a few fruits and vegetables before she walked by the little bookstore at the corner of her street. It was little shop full of old books collected from people who simply didn’t want them anymore. The place was cozy and quiet, and she would often spend hours there just looking at books. She had become such a regular client that the owner and her became friends. After a while, she headed back home and started to cook some lunch when there was a knock on the door. She whipped her hands on her apron and walked to the entrance to find a very cheerful Steve, too cheerfully she thought.
“You never gonna believe what happened.” Steve blurted out before Ellie could even say a word.
“Hi to you too Stevie.” Ellie giggled, rolling her eyes a light.
“Sorry. Hi.” Steve replied, kissing her cheek before entering the apartment.
Ellie was the only woman around which Steve felt so comfortable. He had known her for so long that he could be hundred pour cent himself when he was around her. Ellie would never judge him and wasn’t one to see him differently because he was weak or tiny. In fact, she had always been one of the rare people to treat him exactly as anyone else. She was nice, generous, beautiful and yet he knew better than to push her buttons. She was strong headed when she wanted to.
“It smells good.” Steve observed with a smile.
“I’m making some soup. You can stay for lunch if you want. I bought a piece of this bread you like so much.”
“Okay, I’m sold.” Steve snorted as she glanced up at her, his eyes falling in hers.
“You seem very… Joyful. Are you in love or something?” Ellie walked back to the kitchen and started to cut two pieces of bread.
Steve let out a laugh, one of those laughs Ellie loved so much, the one which made her stomach tightened. “No. No, I’m definitely not.” He said as he grabbed two balls in the cupboard to set the table.
“I’m all ears then.”
“I enrolled.” Steve announced with a grin on his face as the glass Ellie was holding in her hand slipped and smashed on the floor.
“Wh… What?” Ellie turned to face Steve, her heart pounding in her chest.
“That night at the expo, I went back to try again. A doctor showed up, Doctor Abraham Erskine. At first, I thought I was gonna get caught you know but then he asked me a few questions and offered me a chance. Can you believe it?” Steve explained, the smile never leaving his lips.
“Is this a joke?” Ellie whispered, her voice breaking as her eyes filled with tears.
“No. I’m leaving for training camp in a week. I’ll be part of special force called the Strategic Scientific Reserve. I don’t really know much more for now, but I can…” Steve stopped in his track, his eyes dropping on Ellie’s face who was covered with tears. “Angel, what is it?”
“I… You’re leaving too…” Ellie sobbed quietly, and it hit Steve. He had been so excited to tell her that he hadn’t noticed her breath getting heavier and her tears rolling down.
“You knew I tried again.”
“Of course, I did because you’ve always been too stubborn to take no for an answer!” Ellie spitted out, anger in her voice.
“Hey, why are you angry at me all of a sudden?”
“Because you’re gonna get yourself killed, Steve!”
Steve tensed up a little at the brunette’s words. If there was one person, he was excepting to support him it was her. “You and Bucky really have little faith in me.”
“It’s not…” Ellie sighed, taking a deep breath. “It’s not about faith Steve. Of course, I have faith in you, more than anyone but I… I just…” She stopped and looked down, playing nervously with her fingers. “I already feeling like I’m losing Bucky and now you…”
“Ellie…” Steve whispered, stepping closer to her and grabbing one hand in his, the other slipping under her chin and raising her head. “I have to do my part; you know that, we’ve already talked about it.”
“I know. But I hate it. I really do. I wish you were staying…”
Steve sighed loudly. “I’ll be fine, I promise.”
“You always say that. Why do you always say that?! You don’t even know. Your asthma alone can be a big issue during training Steve. Open you eyes please.”
“I can’t say no, Angel, you know that.”
“You… You should leave… I need to be alone…” Ellie said, pulling away from Steve as his heart sank into his chest. Why was it hurting him so much to see her like that because of him?
Steve didn’t have time to say anything before Ellie walked into her bedroom and closed the door shut. She leaned against the door as a loud sob came out of her throat. She hated this, she hated to think about Steve in a training camp or even on a battlefield. She had made her peace with the fact that she would never be the girl he chose, and she was ready to lose him in that, but she wasn’t ready to lose him completely. If she knew Bucky had a chance to survive the war, she never believed Steve stood a chance. She had faith in him, she believed in him more than hundred pour cents, but not in the war. He had so many health issues, asthma, high blood pressure, heart trouble and she didn’t understand how he had been approved.
“Angel… Please open the door.” Steve voice said from the living room.
“You… You should go home Steve.” Ellie told him, closing her eyes as she sat down on the floor of her bedroom, her back against the door.
Steve sighed, hesitated a few seconds before letting his hand drop from the handle. “You know where to find me if you want to talk.”
Ellie heard his footsteps before the front door slammed shut. Ellie couldn’t move, her body shaken by her sobs, and it took a while she finally calmed down. She was exhausted and felt completely drained. She simply raised to her feet, changed to more comfortable clothes and crawled into her bed. She didn’t have the strength for anything else, not today.
****
As Steve stepped out of the Barnes’ apartment, he found himself upset and he wasn’t sure why. A part of him hated to see her cry as she did when he announced he was joining the army, and the other part of him felt guilty. In some ways, he knew she may have been right. He wasn’t really suited for the army, he wasn’t as strong as Bucky, he probably never would be, but he had to try. If this doctor gave him a chance, then he had to take it, he had to, even if that meant leaving Ellie. Before today Steve had never thought that the simple idea of leaving Ellie behind would be so hard. Sure, they were close, he liked her a lot, he even liked more than he had ever cared to admit, but she had always been off limits. She was Bucky’s little sister.
Steve sighed loudly, pushing his hands into his pants’ pockets as he walked toward Ellie’s favorite flower shop. He had been here a thousand times with her before.
“Good morning, Mrs Hilton.” Steve smiled at the old lady who owned the shop.
“G’morning Steven. You alone today?” Mrs Hilton replied with a soft smile.
“Yes. I was just hoping to buy some flowers, for Ellie.”
“Of course, you do.” The old lady grinned, a look on her face Steve had seen before but never paid attention to.
“I want to, before I leave for training.” Steve grabbed a few of Ellie’s favorites flowers.
“Training?” Mrs Hilton frowned.
“Yes. I’ve enrolled in the army. I’m leaving next week, and Ellie didn’t really take it that well…” Steve admitted, looking up at the lady who shook her head.
“Of course, she did not. How could she?” It was Steve to frown for a moment before the old lady talked again. “That lady loves you very much.”
“I’m her friend.” Steve stated almost as he felt the need to clarify things, but the look Mrs Hilton gave him made him wonder if she knew something more. He shook his head, pushing those thoughts out of his head and raised his hand full of flowers. “I’ll take those.”
Mrs Hilton nodded and smiled softly as Steve was reaching for some money. “No need, Steven.”
“I insist.” Steve handed the money over to her but she shood her head again.
“Consider it as a gift.” Mrs Hilton said with a warm smile.
“Thanks, Mrs Hilton.” Steve put the money back into his pocket and started to walk away.
“And Steven.” Mrs Hilton called, and Steve turned back to look at her. “Don’t wait to long, otherwise it might be too late.”
Weirdly enough Steve understood what she was talking about. He opened his mouth to ask her how she knew, but he didn’t. “It’s complicated.” He simply stated, shrugging.
“It’s complicated only because you make it complicated.”
With those words Mrs Hilton turned around and walked back into her shop, leaving Steve lost in his own thought. Steve didn’t know what to think about what she had just said. He had thought about telling Ellie how he felt, he had thought about it a lot, but every time he found a reason not to. She was too pretty for him; she could never like him as much as he liked her; he was only Bucky’s best friend; he was too small, too weak and Ellie needed a real man; all those thoughts had already crossed Steve’s mind. But then, it was the war, maybe it was his chance to tell her before he left.
Steve reached back Ellie’s apartment but instead of knocking on the door, he dropped off the bouquet of flower in front of the door and left.
****
Three days passed before Ellie had the courage to walk up to Steve’s apartment a few blocks from hers. It had been a lot harder for her to digest the news of Steve becoming a soldier that she had thought, and she had felt the need to be alone for a while. But the truth was, she couldn’t stay away from him; she hated to be away from him, especially after their last conversation. She couldn’t let him leave like this, not without letting him know she wasn’t mad at him, because inside she understood why he wanted to enroll. Standing in front of his apartment, she raised her hand, hesitated a few seconds and finally knocked on the door.
“Ellie? Hi. What are you doing here?” Steve couldn’t hide his surprise when he opened the door and noticed Ellie, beautiful as ever.
“I came to apologize. And to thank you for the flowers, they’re beautiful.” Ellie smiled shyly as Steve stepped aside to let her come in.
“You don’t have to apologize for anything you know.”
“I do. The way I reacted when you told me about your enlistment it was… Well, it was uncalled for. I know how much you wanted this.” Ellie explained nervously.
“It’s fine Ellie, really. I know how hard it was for you to let Bucky go and I…” Steve grabbed her hand, squeezing it gently.
“But you’re not Bucky.” Ellie cut him off, looking down at their hands. She bit her lower lip nervously. “I just thought that with all your health issue you’ll… You’ll never be able to enroll and then you’ll stay with me, here.”
“Ellie…”
“No, just let me finish. Please.” Ellie looked up back at him. “I know it’s selfish but if Bucky never comes back, you were the last person that feels like family and I…” Her voice broke and she sniffled a little, a tear running down her cheek.
Ellie couldn’t imagine losing them both because if she did, she wouldn’t have anyone else. She knew Steve would never feel the way she felt about him, but at least he was her friend.
“Liz… Look at me.” Steve said softly, his other hand reaching up to her chin and raising her head to meet her gaze. “I will come back, we both will. Plus, I’m not shipping out yet, I’m just going to training camp for now. I don’t know how it’ll go but I’ll be back in New York before I can ship out anyway.”
“Just promise me you’ll write to me?” Ellie whispered as Steve smiled softly.
“I promise. And I’ll come see you when I’m back in the city.” Steve stroke her cheek.
Steve pulled her into a hug and Ellie pressed her face into his neck, letting out a soft sob. They stayed like that for a few minutes, in silence, before Ellie stepped away from Steve. For a moment she contemplates the idea of telling how she felt because she was scared, she would actually never get the chance too, but she couldn’t. She was unable to find the words and she didn’t want to ruin everything between them so instead she just decided to spend as much time possible with him before he left for training camp.
“I made you some diner by the way.” Ellie told him, handing over some left over she had brought with her.
“Thanks, you should stay.” Steve smiled and as he always did, he helped her around the kitchen.
Steve set out two balls on the small kitchen table and sat in front of Ellie as she filled them with homemade tomato soup. It was Steve’s favorite, Ellie knew it, and the smile he gave her when he realized made her heart skip a beat. She couldn’t help but imagine Steve at the boot camp and she was scared. Steve was skinny, had a ton of health issues, and for the first time in her life, she really wished he was more like Bucky. She had never cared for all of that before, because she liked Steve for who he was inside, but right now she hated that he was so frail and fragile. Ellie slowly shook her head, not wanting to think about the worse. Instead, they simply ate dinner while making small talk and Steve once more didn’t fail to put a smile on her face.
After washing the dishes and cleaning the kitchen, Ellie took a spot next Steve on the couch in the living room. He had turned on the small radio and was listening to the baseball game. Ellie placed the cup for the tea she was making on the coffee table and smiled at him.
“I think you’ll look great in the uniform.” Ellie stated.
“You think?” Steve asked and Ellie nodded. “I guess we’ll see.”
“I’m sure all the dames are gonna want to go dancing with you now.” Ellie admitted, a small hint of deception in her voice which made Steve frowned.
“I’d settle just for one.” Steve replied, his eyes landing on Ellie’s.
For a second the air in the apartment felt heavy and Ellie was about to say something when the teapot in the kitchen started to hiss. She abruptly stood up and walked back to the kitchen. Did he mean anything when he said that? Ellie wondered. No, of course not, it was something Steve always told Bucky after all. She came back and poured two cups of tea.
“Actually, I have to get up early tomorrow, I should take you home.” Steve said, his hand rubbing nervously the back of his neck.
“Can… Can I stay, please Stevie? I really don’t want to be alone right now.” Ellie admitted, her hand dropping on the soon-to-be soldier’s arm unconsciously and just the thought of being without Steve made her heart ache.
Steve hesitated a few seconds, but he knew full well he was done, he had never been able to say no to Ellie, and he probably never will be. “Okay. I’ll stay.”
Ellie simply smiled and handed him a cup of tea. As conversation naturally started, the tension in room slowly disappeared and things started to feel normal again. Steve told Ellie exactly what had happened the night of the exposition, explaining his meeting with Doctor Erskine.  Ellie could hear the excitement in his voice, after all, he was getting exactly what he had wanted for months; he was about to become a soldier. Even though Ellie’s stomach twisted at the thought of it, a part of her was proud. Steve was an amazing man, the most wonderful one actually and if he wasn’t made to fight, maybe he could help on the battlefield in a different manner.
Later that night Ellie had trouble falling asleep, her mind racing thinking about Bucky but mostly about Steve leaving just a few days later. For a few seconds, she even thought of going back to the living room where Steve was sleeping on the couch just to be next to him, but she didn’t. It was a bad idea. When she finally managed to fall asleep, she was restless, bad dreams shaking her sleep.

“KISS ME GOODBYE!” Sebastian yelled at you, as your heart tightened in your chest.
This was your last performance of The Picnic, this was the last time you would get to kiss Sebastian while you were both in characters, the last time you would get to touch him the way you did during the play. You couldn’t believe it had been only a few months since you two had met, because it almost felt like you had known each other since forever. However, a few months had been enough time for you to fall head over the hills for the man standing in front of you. You two got to kiss passionately almost every night while on stage. It wasn’t real, nothing was real but even if you knew that, you couldn't help at your heart breaking a little more every time, especially now that it was your last performance together. Staring the next day, you and Sebastian would probably never see each other again. You knew he was destined to do amazing in his career and even if deep down you really hoped he would at least stay friends with you, you didn’t want to get your hopes up.
You looked at him and your hands reached out to grab his face, as you did every night, to press your lips to his as his hands settled on your hips to bring you closer. Somehow that night you kissed him differently. It was deep, full of love and desperate and for a moment you wished he would never step back from you. Unfortunately, after a longer kiss than the one you usually shared, he did.
“I feel like a freak when I say this.” Sebastian told his lines and pointed at you. “I love you! Goodbye.”
As your heart broke even more in your chest, Sebastian stepped out of the stage and the rest of the performance was a blur to you. You finished your scene as if you were on auto pilot and soon enough you were in front of the stage, bowing down as the public cheered, Sebastian’s hand holding yours tightly, his thumb gently stroking yours. You didn’t want to let go of him and, almost as he felt the same or read your mind somehow, he kept your hands linked as you and all your co-stars made your way backstage when the light turned off. You had barely passed the door hiding you from the crowd that he pulled you in a tight hug, wrapping his strong arms around you and you slowly buried your face into his neck, inhaling his scent and closing his eyes for a second.
“You were amazing tonight.” Seb whispered into your ear, pressing a kiss to your temple before he stepped away.
“Thanks, so were you, as always.” You smiled softly, pushing a piece of hair from his forehead and getting lost into those big blue eyes you loved so much for a short moment.
You glimpsed quickly at his lips, already missing the feeling of them against yours but you were never going to admit it, not to him or not to anyone. You were going to miss Sebastian, so damn much, and you weren’t sure how to handle it. It has become such a strong and important presence in your life and you wanted to tell him how much he meant to you, you wanted to tell him that you didn’t want to lose touch with him because, even if he probably didn’t feel the same about you, he was still your friend. You opened your mouth to say something but before you could get a word out, you were cut off by one of your co-star.
“Guys, come on, we’re going out to celebrate!”
Sebastian offered you a soft smile and you cleared your throat nervously, taking out the wigs you were wearing for the play, letting your natural brown hair down. For a moment, you swear you could sense Seb stare at you, something different in his eyes but it was probably just your imagination because when you looked back up at him, he looked away.
“I’m gonna go shower, I’ll meet you out back in 30 minutes?” Sebastian asked you and you simply nodded, taking the time to step into your own shower in your dressing room.
After a quick warm shower, trying to get your mind off of what was bothering you, you dried yourself and slipped into a simple pair of jeans and a plain white tee-shirt. The night was clear, beautiful and warm. You always loved New York in the summer and you would spend hours outside going for strolls, short runs or just to sit in a park and read a book. You grabbed your sweater, your bag and made your way to the back of the theater where Seb was already waiting for you. A loving smile spread on his lips as soon as he saw you and you offered him a small, slightly forced one, trying to clear your head.
“The others have already left; they’ll be waiting for us there. Are you ready?” Seb explained to you, grabbing your hand in his, once again taking you by surprise.
“Yeah. Where are we going?”
“Sam rented a room at a restaurant for the party. A car’s waiting for us to take us there.”
You nodded and without anything else to say, you followed Sebastian outside. There were people waiting by the door, most of them fans of the man standing by your side, and as soon as you spotted them, Seb let go of your hand and went to sign autographs and take a few pictures with them. Silently, smiling and waving at a few fans, you made your way to the car waiting for you and stepped inside. You knew Seb was the most famous person out of the whole cast, he was now pretty well-known for his role in the Marvel universe, but he remained the most wonderful, generous and amazing man you'd ever met. You loved that about him, he was the most down-to-earth person and it just made you love him a little more every time your realize how much love he had to share with everyone around him.
After a moment, Seb finally stepped into the car and took a seat next to you, that smile you loved so much still spread on his lips. He really had the biggest heart, and you couldn’t help but feel a pinch on your heart at that thought. The ride to the restaurant was silent but not uncomfortable, you had had always felt really comfortable around him, being able to be the best version of yourself. Slowly, the car slowed down and when you stepped into the room, people were already chatting, alcohol was filling the glasses and soon enough Seb and you were pulled in different directions.
****
As much as the night was fun, and you love being able to spend a little more time with your co-star, the unsettling feeling about losing Sebastian settled back in after a while. You suddenly felt very overwhelmed, the few drinks you had throughout the night not really helping your mind stay clear. Politely you excused yourself to Ben, who played Alan, and made your way to the empty balcony. The fresh air made you shiver, and you closed your eyes for a minute, taking a long and shaky breath. You were so lost in your thoughts that you didn’t hear Sebastian step outside, and you jumped slightly when he dropped his jacket on your shoulder.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scar… Hey, what’s wrong?” Sebastian asked, worries quickly filling his eyes when he noticed the tears on your cheeks.
“Nothing.” You smiled softly and whipped your cheeks with your hand.
“It doesn’t look like nothing. You seemed like you were having a great time out there.”
“I was, I mean, I am. I just… I guess I’m a little sad it’s our last night, that’s all.” You admitted with a small chuckle, trying to avoid Seb’s gaze.
“Yeah, me too. But that doesn’t mean we won’t see each other again you know. We’ll keep in touch.” Sebastian’s hand gently brushed against your back, and you shivered.
“You know you don’t have to say that right? I know you’ll probably be too busy becoming a superstar with your other Marvel movies.” You teased, trying to keep a little ton.
Sebastian rolled his eyes and shook his head. “I’ll never be too busy for you.”
Your heart skipped a beat as you registered Sebastian’s words, glancing up at him to realize he was absolutely serious. Sure, you two had become pretty close over the last few months, acting every night on stage together, hanging out on the days where you were not performing but you had never really imagined he could care about you as much as you did.
“Actually I… I kinda of wanted to talk to you about something.” Sebastian suddenly looked nervous and ran a hand through his hair, licking his lips as your frown.
“About what?”
“I realize that… Well that we were always acting, that you probably don’t feel the same way but I…” He massaged his neck and looked up to meet your eyes. “I like you.”
Seb’s words felt like a punch in the gut and for a second you completely froze, your eyes scanning his face for any sign of this just being a prank. But he seemed serious, honest but you still couldn’t believe it was real. How was it possible that someone as wonderful and generous as Seb could like you?
You chuckle slightly and Seb frowned at your reaction. “Very funny, Seb. Who put you up to this?”
“What?” He shook his head in denial and slowly took your hands in his, stroking gently the back with his thumb. “I’m… I’m serious, y/n.”
“You can’t be.”
For a moment, Sebastian seemed hurt by your words, really hurt and as he stepped back, letting go of your hand, you knew he was serious. You bit on your lower lips, immediately feeling guilty for doubting him. Sure Seb and you were close, but never in a million years you would have thought he liked you, or at least not in that way.
“You… You like me? Why?” You asked before you could even think about your words.
“Because you’re smart, funny, beautiful and sexy and I just love being around you. Because you make me feel good, about myself, about my life and I want to see you more. I want to kiss you, not because of a play but because we both really want to. I want to…”
Without any second thoughts, feeling a little overwhelmed, you raised to your toes and pressed your lips to Sebastian’s, the way you had always wanted to, not in front of a crowd, not as a performance, a real kiss. Sebastian’s hands gently cupped your face, bringing you closer to him as you rested yours against his chest, your heart beating way too fast in your chest. The kiss was different from all of those you had exchanged on stage, it was soft and loving and a lot better than what you had ever imagined it would be. When you finally parted, you were both a little out of breath, your forehead still pressed together.
“I like you too, I just never thought…” You shook your head slowly, chasing the thoughts once and for all out of your head. “I’ve liked you for a while…” You admitted in a whisper.
“Good. Because I’m not planning on letting you go.” Sebastian stroked your cheek before pressing a small kiss to your lips again. “Let me take you on a date. A real date. Tomorrow night, just you and me.”
You bit down on your lower lips to keep yourself from smiling too hard and slowly nodded. “Okay. Just you and me.”
Sebastian smiled and, once again, pressed his lips to yours in a deep kiss. He liked you, he wanted to date you and all of the sudden the end of your play together didn’t seem to be so hard to get over. You had him, you’ll always have him.

Chapter one
Tumblr media
“I don’t see what the problem is.” Bucky stated, knowing full well what was on Steve’s mind. “You’re about to be the last eligible man in New York. You know there’s three and a half million women here?”
Ellie felt herself tensed a little at her brother’s words. There was a lot of women in New York, and one of them would probably end up with Steve one day, she thought, and as she watched a couple holding hands walk by them, she wished she could have that too. Ellie was a desperate romantic and deep down all she wanted was to find a man who loved her and have a family.
“Well, I’d settle for just one.” Steve replied pushing his hands further down his pants’ pockets.
“Good thing I took care of that.” Bucky smirked, letting go of Ellie’s shoulder and waving at two ladies standing a little few meters aways from them.
The first one to the left was a beautiful blonde, hair perfectly brushed, with deep blue eyes wearing a red dress with small white flowers. The one to the right was a gorgeous brunette wearing a beige dress, who Ellie had already seen with Bucky once or twice. Her name was Connie if she remembered correctly. Ellie suddenly felt a little uncomfortable, but she knew her brother had always had success with the ladies. Bucky was charming and knew exactly how to talk to the ladies.
“Hey, Bucky!” Connie called out loudly, waving her hand back at him.
“What’d you tell her about me?” Steve sighed slightly, his body stiffening a little.
“Only the good stuff.” Bucky glanced at his best friend and quickly at his sister, a huge smile on his face.
Steve pushed back the small piece of hair falling in front of his forehead, immediately growing very nervous which is something that didn’t escape Ellie. She knew him well enough to know those kinds of situations made Steve’s anxiety kick in. He had always been self conscious and never great at talking to women. Not like Bucky was anyway and he was painfully aware of it. After all, he was only the little kid from Brooklyn who every woman was too afraid to step on, he was nothing like his best friend. He looked at Ellie a few seconds, who gave him a tiny smile, and took a deep breath before all three of them reached the two women.
“Ladies, this is Steve, my friend I told you about. And this is Ellie, my sister.” Bucky introduced before he took the brunette’s hand. “Steve, Ellie, this is Connie and her friend, Bonnie.”
After a quick polite greeting, the five of them started to make their way further into the expo. The hall was getting more and more filled with people of all ages, couples, group of friends or families walking from wonders to wonders and Ellie quietly followed Bucky, Connie and Bonnie as she stayed by Steve’s side a little behind them.
“Welcome to the Modern Marvels Pavilion and the World of Tomorrow. A greater world. A better world.” The voice of exposition announced, resonating above their head.
They all stopped for a second, looking around them. Despite the fact she felt slightly overwhelmed standing in the middle of so many people, the place was absolutely amazing.
“Oh, my God! It’s Starting!” Connie exclaimed as she squeezed Bucky’s hand before she pulled him to follow her toward the stage.
Ellie exchanged another quick glance with Steve, and, without a word, she grabbed his arm, folding hers under his, and they followed Bucky, Connie and Bonnie across the crowd. They ended up a few meters away from the huge center stage as a woman’s voice loudly raised.
“Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Howard Stark!”
Ellie grinned, clapping, and watched the named man appeared on the stage. He removed his hat, handed it to the woman by his side and, with a grin, kissed her. Ellie rolled her eyes; Stark was a genius, everyone knew that, but he also had a reputation as a womanizer.
“Ladies and gentlemen. What if I told you that, in just a few short years, your automobile won’t even have to touch the ground at all?” Stark spoke in the microphone.
Ellie looked at Steve watching him as he handed the small package of peanut he was holding in his hand to Bonnie, the woman standing just in front of him. She shot him an annoyed look, making Ellie’s heart drop in her chest, before she turned back to look at the stage, ignoring him, and for a second, Ellie wanted to punch her. Why did women kept on acting like that with him? Why did they keep on acting like he was such a loser when he was nothing but the most amazing man she knew? She sighed in silence and tightened her arm around his, give it a little squeeze.
Ellie looked back at the stage right at the moment the red card in the middle of it started to lift of the ground, flying. Unbelievable, she thought as she squeaked with excitement.
“Holy cow.” Bucky declared, expressing exactly what Ellie was thinking.
But soon, one of the small engines replacing one of the wheels started to sparkle and gave in. The car crashed back to the floor in a loud banging noise and Ellie chuckled as Bucky exchanged a glance with her and Steve, smiling genuinely at them.
“I did say a few years, didn’t I?” Stark spoke in the microphone.
Ellie let got of Steve arm and started to clap in excitement along with the other people around her. A flying car, how about that? she thought. It worked, only for a few seconds, but it did and maybe a few years of work would make it a reality. She reached out to Bucky’s arm and gently squeezed it before he started to turn back to her and Steve.
“Hey, Steve, what do you say we treat these girls…” Bucky started but he stopped, losing the smile which had been stuck on his face the whole time, when he noticed his best friend was gone.
Ellie turned to where Steve had been standing only a few seconds earlier and frowned. She sighed and looked around for him, but she couldn’t see him anywhere. Why did he always do that?
“Where did he go?” Her brother asked.
“I don’t know. He was here only a few seconds ago.” Ellie shrugged.
The Barnes’ siblings had noticed something was off with him, and they had both hoped to lift his spirit and for a moment Ellie thought it had worked but it clearly hadn’t. Steve was now gone, God knows where, and Ellie couldn’t help but believe it was also partly because of how Bonnie had treated him. Once again, she really wanted to punch the blonde standing in front of her.
“Let’s go looking for him.” Bucky said, grabbing Bonnie’s hand.
Ellie followed her brother, standing on her tiptoes from time to time to have a look around, but there was still no sign of Steve. It didn’t help that the place was packed, and she was just a little over 5 foot 4, just as Steve was. Then, her eyes stopped on a building: United States Armed Service – Recruitment and she sighed.
“I think I know where he is.” Ellie said grabbing Bucky’s arm and pointing to the building.
“Of course.” Bucky shook his head and turned to Connie and Bonnie, offering them a warm smile. “Girls, we’ll be right back. Don’t move.”
They nodded and Bucky grabbed Ellie’s hand, pulling her with him. It didn’t take them long to find Steve, standing up on a small platform in front of a mirrored image of a soldier. Of course, he would be here, his mind running over the fact he couldn’t enlist when his best friend was about to ship out. Ellie opened her mouth, about to say something but Bucky beat her to it, pushing Steve’s shoulder.
“Come on. You’re kind of missing the point of a double date.”
“And a plus one.” Ellie muttered to herself.
“We’re talking the girl dancing.” Bucky added, rolling his eyes and ignoring his sister comment.
Ellie knew what was coming, and so did Bucky. Steve clearly was not going to come dancing with them, he was going to try to enroll, again.
“You go ahead. I’ll catch up with you.” Steve said, stuffing his hands in his pockets and the Barnes’ siblings exchanging a look.
“You’re really going to do this again?” Ellie asked him, a worried expression on her face. She wondered if it was even worth trying to convince him not to try again because he certainly wasn’t going to listen. Stubborn little punk.
“Well, it’s a fair. I’m gonna try my luck.” Steve shrugged and Ellie sighed silently.
“As who, Steve from Ohio?” Bucky said, anger and frustration coming through his voice. “They’ll catch you. Or worse, they’ll actually take you.”
Ellie heart dropped in her chest at the thought of Steve leaving her too. She knew she was being selfish, but what was she supposed to do if Steve also left for war?
“Look, I know you don’t think I can do this.” Steve stressed, looking up at his best friend’s face.
“This isn’t a back alley, Steve. It’s war.” Bucky cut him off.
“I know it’s a war.”
“Why are you so keen to fight?”
“There are so many important jobs.” Ellie stepped in, taking her brother’s side.
“What do you want me to do? Collect scrap metal in my little red wagon?” Steve asked, starting to get annoyed and frustrated at the conversation too.
“Yes. Why not?” Bucky approved his sister’s words.
“I’m not gonna sit in a factory, Bucky.” Steve stated and Bucky opened his mouth to answer, but his best friend cut him of. “Guys, come on. There are men laying down their lives. I got no right to do any less than them. That’s what you don’t understand. This isn’t about me.” He explained and Ellie knew that deep down, on some level, he was right.
“Right. ‘Cause you got nothing to prove.” Bucky argued with a tint of defiance in his voice.
Steve and Bucky stared at each other for a few seconds, while Ellie was trying to find the words to convince Steve not to do this. But it was probably hopeless, Steve wasn’t going to change his mind.
“Hey, Sarge! Are we going dancing?” Connie asked form afar, her arm folded with Bonnie’s.
“Yes, we are!” The sergeant answered, quickly turning over to the girls before looking back at Steve and sighing loudly. He wouldn’t be able to change his mind and Ellie wouldn’t be either, Steve was way too stubborn for that. He shook his head, giving up and taking a few steps back. “Don’t do anything stupid until I get back.”
“How can I? You’re taking all the stupid with you.” Steve pointed out.
Bucky shook his head again, stepping close to his best friend again. “You’re a punk.”
“Jerk.” Steve simply snorted back, Bucky pulling him into a hug, and they clapped their hands in each others backs. “Be careful.”
Bucky started to walk back to the girls, but Ellie didn’t move, still standing in front of Steve. Truth was, she didn’t know if she wanted to go dancing anymore either.
“Don’t win the war ‘till I get there!” Steve shot back and Bucky turned to him a last time, giving him a soldier salute.
“Liz, you coming?” Bucky wondered, looking at his sister.
“Stevie…” Ellie whispered in a last attempt but the look he gave her was enough of an answer.
“It’s okay. Go dancing. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Steve reassured her, offering her a small soft smile.
Ellie looked at him, hesitating for a second before she sighed, nodding slowly. Without one more word, she dropped a peck on Steve’s cheek and walked over to Bucky.
“Come on, girls. They’re playing our song.” Bucky slipped his arm around Connie.
Ellie took a last look back at Steve before she dropped her head, following her brother. They quickly reached the car, and as she sat in the back seat, Ellie felt her heart sink in her chest. She wasn’t in a mood to go dancing, she just wanted to go home.
“Buck, can you drop me off at home please?” Ellie asked quietly.
“I thought you were coming dancing.”
“I’m just tired.”
Ellie noticed Bucky’s glanced in the mirror, but he didn’t argue. He knew his little sister and he knew his enrolment took a bigger toll on her than she led on.
“Okay. I’ll drop you off.”

That night Ellie didn’t sleep well. Her mind was too busy overthinking and imagining the worst. Every time she managed to drift off to sleep, she had a nightmare. In every single one of them she saw Bucky die in the war, not leaving her with a chance to say goodbye. For the second time that night, she woke up with a start, her heart racing in her chest and her eyes filling with tears. She couldn’t breathe and it took her a while to reconnect with reality. Once she calmed down, her breath calming down again, she decided to give up on sleep. Instead, she came out of her room and started to clean to keep her mind occupied. Glancing at the clock hanging on top of the kitchen table she realized it was barely 6 in the morning when she finished.
“Hey, what are you doing up so early?” Bucky’s voice raised from behind and he yawned loudly.
“Couldn’t sleep.” Ellie simply stated, breaking a few eggs in the pan for her and Bucky.
Bucky frowned. He wasn’t an idiot; he could clearly see something was on her mind and he didn’t have to ask to know exactly what it was. “I’m starving.” He said deciding not to push her.
“Well, it’s almost ready. How was dancing last night?” Ellie wondered, pulling out two plates and cups out of the cupboard.
“It was nice, really nice.” Bucky admitted with a smile as he poured two coffees. “What did you do?”
“Not much. I just read the hobbit for a few hours.”
“Again?” Bucky chuckled. “Don’t you know the book by heart by now?”
“I do, but I still love it as much. It’s a great book.” Ellie shrugged, placing two eggs and a toast into a plate and handing it to her brother who thanked her silently.
“I know you do. I was the one who read it to you the first time when it came out in 1937, remember?” Bucky chuckled, taking a sit at the kitchen table.
“I remember. I used to love it when you read it to me, even if I was already way too old for you to read me stories.” Ellie admitted, sitting in front of him.
“Maybe I’ll bring you some new books from Europe.” Bucky took a bite of his breakfast and looked up as his little sister’s face fell a little.
“I think that a great idea.” Ellie nodded, looking down at her plate suddenly losing her appetite.
They ate breakfast, Bucky making all the small talk before he helped her clean up and headed back to his room to finish packing. He was leaving in just a few hours and even if he was ready, a part of him was nervous to leave his sister. They had been separated before of course, when Bucky had left for his military training, but this time was different.
Once his bag was packed, he threw it on his back and walked back to the living room where Ellie was pathing nervously, pushing a lock of her hair away from her face. She was wearing the dress Bucky had given her for her last birthday.
“You look really pretty, you know.” Bucky pointed out with a warm smile.
“Thanks. I’m coming with you to the tarmac.”
“You don’t have to, kiddo.”
“I know, but I want to.” Ellie muttered.
“Okay.” Bucky pressed a kiss to her temple.
After a short ride in the car the army has send for Bucky, they were both standing on the tarmac, near the big army plane that was being prepared to take the soldiers to London. About thirty other soldiers were standing around, saying goodbye to their girlfriends, their wives, their kids or their parents and Ellie’s heart felt heavy. She grabbed Bucky’s hand and gave it a squeeze, the tears burning in her eyes.
“You’re going to be okay, Liz.” Bucky grabbed her face in his hands and gently stroke her cheeks.
“Promise me you… You’ll be careful. That… That you won’t do anything reckless.” Ellie sobbed.
“I promise. It’ll be okay. I’ll write you, all the time.” Ellie nodded and Bucky pulled her into his chest as she sobbed quietly. “And you better not find a boyfriend before I come back. I’ll have to make sure he’s good enough for you, you know.” He added in an attempt to lift her mood and Ellie chuckled slightly through her tears.
Bucky hated seeing her like this, but he understood why she was upset and scared. He strokes her back gently as she closed her eyes for a few minutes.
“Alright soldiers, time to go.” A voice announced way too soon for Ellie’s taste.
“Promise me you’ll keep an eye on Steve for me, yeah?” Bucky noted wiping her tears. Ellie nodded and he dropped a kiss to her forehead. “I love you.”
“I love you too. I’ll see you soon.” Ellie said softly, forcing a small smile despite her state of mind.
Ellie stepped back, watching Bucky throw his bag over his shoulder and walk away. She looked at him climb into the plane with the other soldiers, wrapping her arms around herself. She already missed him. Unable to leave, she watched at the plane took off. Why was it so hard? Why did she feel like she was losing him for good? She took a deep breath, trying not to think about the worst and slowly started to make her way back home. She needed to be alone. Once she was back into her – way too empty – apartment, she settled on the couch and buried herself in the book she knew all too well, a much-needed distraction.

April 1943.
The 107th.
The words kept on resonating in Ellie’s head. Bucky was shipping out. He was leaving for London the next morning and she hated the idea. Since they had lost their parents in March and July 1933, Bucky was the only family Ellie had left. It had been ten years and, even if she still daily missed her parents dearly, she had managed to keep on living because of Bucky. Sure, she missed her mom’s tenderness, her hugs and her smile and she missed the way her dad always managed to make her laugh and the way he would play dolls with her without a care in the world, but she still had Bucky. Buck was her brother, her protector, her anchor and knowing that soon, way too soon to her taste, he would be fighting in the war raging in Europe terrified her to her very soul. Bucky was a good soldier, she knew full well, but it was war. He was young, he had just turned twenty-six and just the thought of ever losing him made her shiver.
“Are you listening to me Ellie?” Bucky’s soft voice raised, pulling his little sister out of her thoughts.
“Yes, yes. Sorry.” Ellie answered, offering a soft smile to her brother even if she didn’t have the heart for it.
“Talk to me Liz…” Bucky’s hand dropped to hers, gently giving it a squeeze.
“I just…” Ellie sighed, her eyes filling with tears. “I’m scared Buck… I can’t lose you too. What would I do if you…”
“Hey, hey. Look at me.” Bucky cut her off and she looked up, her eyes stopping on those warm blue eyes of his that he had inherited from their mother and that she loved so much. “You’re not going to lose me, okay? I will come back.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Maybe I don’t, you’re right. But I’ll do everything I can to, I can promise you that. But you know I have to do my part.”
“You sound like Steve when you say it like this.” Ellie whispered.
“Elizabeth Winnie Barnes, you are the strongest woman I know. You can get through anything, and you will be just fine, I’m certain of that.” Bucky said gently as he grabbed her face in both his hands and wiped off the tears on her cheeks.
“I still hate it when you call me by my full name. Makes feel like I’m in trouble.” Ellie snorted.
“I know.” Bucky chuckled, pulling his little sister into a hug and she wrapped her arms around his waist, pressing her face against his torso.
Bucky was five years older than Ellie; he had always been the one to take care of her, he knew how strong she was, he had seen it but sometimes he wished he could do more to protect her from the world around them. When they had lost their parents, she had been his rock also she never completely realized it, but he had always needed her as much as she needed him. They were each other strength. He knew he could go fight in the war simply because he knew she would be home waiting for him when he will be coming back. He will fight and come back for his little sister.
It was Ellie’s 18th birthday, but she wasn’t feeling it. It had been almost seven years since her and Bucky had lost their parents, she always missed them in some way, but somehow today it was harder. She wished they could be here, celebrating her passage to adulthood with her and Bucky. She quietly sighed and rolled over in her bed, her eyes dropping on the picture on her nightstand. It was her favorite picture, George holding four years old Ellie in one arm, his other one wrapped up around Winnifred’s shoulders who had her arms around nine years old Bucky standing in front of her. All their smiles were genuine and the happiness on their faces was almost contagious. She sniffled a little, rubbed her eyes and rolled out of bed. She made her way to the bathroom and took a quick shower, cleaning herself up before throwing on a large pair of kakis pants with a simple black tee-shirt and same color cardigan. Ellie had always preferred pants to dresses or skirt, she felt more comfortable, more of herself and also it wasn’t the norm, she didn’t really care what people thought. After putting on some light make up, she made her way to the small kitchen in the apartment she had been sharing with Bucky for the last few years.
“Hey, you’re up early.” Ellie said softly noticing her brother was already up and moving around the stove.
“Happy birthday!” Bucky greeted her, a huge smile on his face and she couldn’t help but grin in return.
“Thanks Bucko.” Ellie snuggled into her brother’s torso for a quick hug.
“You haven’t called me that in a long time. Feels like I’m back to us being kids” Bucky dropped a kiss on top of her head.
“I know, but it still suits you.” Ellie grinned, kissing his cheek in return.
“Steve should be there soon; we’re having a birthday breakfast and after I thought you might like to go to Coney Island.” Bucky explained, stepping away from his sister to go back to the stove where he had started cooking pancakes.
“You know, we really don’t have to do anything special, Buck. I’m fine with just staying home.”
“No, huh-huh.” Bucky shook his head. There was no way he wasn’t doing anything for her today. “We’re not staying home. You’re 18 Liz! It’s a big deal. We have to celebrate.”
“We can celebrate here. Just you, me and Steve.” Ellie offered.
“Hey, what’s going on?” Bucky frowned, surprised she didn’t want to do anything.
“It’s just…” Ellie sighed. “I’m not sure I’m feeling like it, that’s all.”
Bucky suddenly noticed the look on her face, she was sad. “Talk to me, kiddo.”
“I miss them Buck… I miss them so much. I really wished they were here.” Ellie admitted, her eyes feeling up with tears.
“I know, sweetie. Me too.” Bucky grabbed her face, dropped a kiss to her forehead and gently pulled her into a hug.
They stayed liked this for a moment, Bucky rubbing her back, his chin resting on the top of her head, until the front door of the apartment flew open, and Steve appeared. His left cheek was covered in a bruise that had started to turn from blue to green, and his lip had a deep cut. The two siblings exchanged a quick look perfectly aware he had been in a fight, again.
“Again?” Bucky sighed looking at his best friend who simply shrugged.
Ellie pulled away from her brother and walked up to Steve, taking his face into both of her hands, a concerned and worried look on her face. Steve gently dropped his free hand on one of hers, the other holding up a small package, and smiled at her.
“I’m fine Angel. I promise.” Steve reassured her.
“You have to stop doing that Stevie…” Ellie whispered.
“You know I can’t do that. I don’t like bullies.”
Ellie sighed. She knew Steve would never give up on a fight, that who he was, but it didn’t make it easier to see him covered his bruises and cuts. He was a brave man who was always standing up to defend other people even if it meant bullies beating the crap out of him. Truth be told, it was one of the things that made him a good man and one of the reasons why Liz liked him so much.
“Happy birthday.” Steve changed the subject, handing her the small box in his hand.
“Thanks.”
It was that day Ellie truly realized that even if she kept on missing her parents dearly, she would always have Bucky and this little punk by her side. After breakfast, they spent the day just the three of them at Coney Island walking around, eating sweets and going on a few rides. In the evening, Ellie opened the presents the two men had bought for her, Bucky had purchased a golden locket inside of which he had placed a tiny picture of the three of them, and Steve had gotten her a typewriter, the kind she had her eyes on for a while. After that, they all settled into easy small talks.
“Come on, we have to go pick up Steve from the movies.” Bucky’s voice pulled her out of her thoughts.
Ellie simply nodded, wiping the tears from her cheeks. Without a word, she followed Bucky to his car and sat on the passenger seat as her brother started to drive away. She knew Brooklyn like the back of her hand, growing up here, she had always loved to wander in those streets, and she looked as they passed by so many familiar places, memories flooding through her mind. Ellie, barely four years old, and her father going for a stroll as she sat on his shoulders, Bucky walking by their side. Bucky playing catch with her when she was ten. Bucky and her, side by side as he held her hand after their mother’s funeral. Steve, Bucky and her sitting near Steve’s apartment after he had lost his mother.
“How’s nursing school going?” Bucky asked, stopping at a red light.
“Good, I think. It’s not always easy but it’s good. One more year and I’ll be graduating.” Ellie turned to look at him.
“I’m sure you’re going to make a great nurse someday, you know. Mom and dad would be proud.” Bucky grinned proudly. “Hell, I’m damn proud of you.”
“Thanks Buck. They’ll be proud of you too, you know. Nazis should be scared.” Ellie joked even if her head wasn’t much into it.
Bucky quickly squeezed her hand in his before the light turned back to green and he drove away. She looked back at the window, New York building passing by in front of her but soon enough the car came to a full stop as Bucky parked in front of the movie theater. Bucky came around to open the door for her, having a look around for his best friend but Ellie was the first one to spot him. He was in the small alley behind the movies, being beat up by a tall blonde man who was at least 15 centimeters taller than him. Steve had always been as stubborn as hell when it came to standing up to bullies and it wasn’t the first, and probably not the last time, he was getting his ass kicked because of it.
“Buck.” Ellie simply said, dropping her hand on Bucky’s arm and pointing at the spot where Steve was getting punched again, sending him to the floor.
“You’ve got to be kidding me…” She heard her brother mutter before he stepped closer to his best friend, and she followed.
Steve was there, laid on the floor near a garbage can. Ellie hated to see him like this, she never liked it when he got hurt, and sometimes it was infuriating that he was never one to give up.
“Hey!” Bucky called out to the man bullying their friend, catching him by the arm and pushing him away from Steve and Ellie. “Pick on someone your own size.”
The man threw a punch toward Bucky who easily avoid it before the soldier punched him straight into the jaw. While her brother was kicking the bullies’ ass, Ellie went around him and without a word grabbed Steve’s arm to help him up. At the sight of his face Ellie’s heart skipped a beat. His bottom lip was cut by the side of his mouth, his nose was bleeding, and he was probably already starting to have bruises on other parts of his body from falling down.
“You okay?” Ellie whispered softly, her thumb brushing against the cut on his lips.
“I’m fine.” Steve simply replied, still bent over, his hands resting on his knees to stabilize himself.
Ellie sighed and was about to say something else, but Bucky was faster than her.
“Sometimes I think you like getting punched.” Bucky said, looking at Steve and bending over to pick up a piece of paper, as the bully ran away from them.
“I had him on the ropes.”
“How many times is this?” Bucky asked, opening up the enlistment paper his best friend had dropped in the fight. “Ah, you’re from Paramus now? You know it’s illegal to lie on the enlistment form. And seriously, Jersey?”
Steve brushed himself off, wiping the blood from his nose before his eyes landed on Bucky. He was wearing his kaki army uniform and it didn’t take long for Steve to understand why. His best friend was shipped out to war while he was staying here, in New York. He felt his throat tightened.
“You get your orders?” The blond man asked also he already knew the answer.
“The one O seventh.” Ellie answered for her brother as she exchanged a glance with Steve.
A simple look and Steve already knew what Elizabeth was thinking. He had known her long enough to be able to see the fear and concern in her eyes. She was scared, for Bucky, and a part of him was too. However, the dominant feeling in Steve’s mind was not fear, it was injustice. It was so unfair that James could go help out in the war, but he couldn’t because of his health issues.
“Sergeant James Barnes, shipping out for England first thing tomorrow.” Bucky announced, a proud smile spreading on his lips.
Steve looked at him in his uniform once again and he shook his head. “I should be going.” Rogers declared, rubbing his hands together to get rid of the last dirt on them, a sad look on his face.
“Come on, man.” Bucky said cheerfully, placing his arm around his best friend and pulling him with him. “My last night! I got to get you cleaned up.” He added, pulling his arm off of Steve’s shoulders.
“Where are we going?” Steve questioned, walking by Bucky and Ellie’s side.
“The future.” The sergeant answered.
He handed the journal he was holding in his hand to Steve, throwing the enlistment paper to the side. Steve opened it and glanced at the front page which was stating: World exposition of Tomorrow. Bucky had been talking about going to the Stark exposition for weeks now and when he had asked Ellie to join them, she had agreed.
Ellie always loved to spend time with his brother and Steve. They were all so close and she cared deeply about both of them. In some ways, this was why a part of her was glad that Steve wasn’t going to fight in the war, at least he was staying home with her. She knew he hated the idea of staying behind, of not doing his part in the war effort, but selfishly she was glad he couldn’t enlist. Ever since she had met him for the first time when she was just a kid, Ellie had always had a soft spot for Steve. He had always been so nice to her, in the contrary of some of Bucky’s friend. He always made sure she was okay, always had nice words and the truth was, she had started to care for him more than she was ready to admit it. However, she never said a word about it to anyone, she didn’t feel like it was the right thing to do. After all, Steve was her brother’s best friend, he was the sweetest man on Earth, and she clearly didn’t think she deserved someone as amazing as he was. She was probably just like a little sister to him, at least that what she believed.
“You alright Angel?” Steve asked softly grabbing Ellie’s arm as Bucky sat in the driver’s sit of his car.
“Yes, I’m okay.” Ellie nodded offering him a gentle smile.
“Are you sure? I know it must be hard for you to see him go.”
There it was, Steve sweetness to its best, putting his own feeling to the side to make sure Ellie was okay. That was what he always did, taking care of anyone else’s, never putting himself first especially when it came to the Barnes’.
“I promise you, I’m fine Stevie.” Ellie reassured him, squeezing the hand he had resting on her arm, and he simply nodded.
Satisfied, for now, Steve, as the gentleman he was, opened the front door to let Ellie sat in the passenger seat. She offered him a smile to thank him and sat by her brother side as he turned the ignition on, Steve slipping into the back seat. The ride to the expo was pretty quiet, Ellie looking by the car window as they approached the huge parking lot. She had never loved crowds, it made her anxious, but having Steve and Bucky by her side always eased her mind. Plus, the exposition was a big deal and she had an interest in science. She stepped out of the car, quickly followed by her brother and his best friend, and took a look around. There was a huge globe resting in the middle of the hall and she was filled with excitement.
“Come on, let’s go see the show.” Bucky announced, slipping and arm around his sister’s shoulder as they started walking toward the entrance.
They passed by a few buildings and, by the spinning globe in the middle of the fair, Ellie stopped to take a look at a train passing on top of them. Ellie was amazed, her mouth slightly open in astonishment and Bucky couldn’t hold back a chuckle at the sight of her eyes sparkling with wonder. She had the exact same look than the one she had on her eighth birthday when their dad had bought her her very first bicycle and she had ridden it down the street they lived on at the time. Bucky pressed a kiss to her temple and turned a little more toward his best friend who clearly wasn’t as excited as Ellie, his hands pushed into his pants pockets, looking sad and disappointed. The Barnes’ siblings really hoped tonight would lift his spirit a little.
