Why I love Taylor Swift

Most posts I read about why he or she loves Taylor is because in some way, shape or form, Taylor’s music helped them get through bad times in their life. For me, my story is a little different. 

Ever since I was a little girl, I had always daydreamed about being in love and having a boyfriend and what that would be like. My favourite movies and books to read were romance and one of my goals in life ever since I was little was to someday have a white picket house, a husband and children. To this day, I’ve never met or come across anyone who has the same hope and outlook on love as I do except Taylor.

The first album of Taylor’s I bought was Fearless, when I was 10 years old (I’m now 21) and much of the songs reflected the ups and downs of love - what it was like to want somebody who was with someone else (You Belong With Me), what it was like to be in love as a teenager (Fifteen), what it was like to be completely and passionately in love with someone and wanting them to trust that you’ll catch them and be there at all times (Jump Then Fall), and what it was like to show someone all the reasons why they should pick you (Hey Stephen). As a 10 year old, I had not been in any real relationships (obviously) but the closest I could come to exploring what love was like and what the roller coaster of emotions that come with love was through this album.

When the Red album was released, I was in my first real relationship at the age of 15 and we had been going out for two months. At that point in my life, I listened to all of Taylor’s albums but this time instead of daydreaming I was actually relating to the songs even more. “I never saw you coming and I’ll never be the same” represented how never in million years did I picture myself realistically ending up with my boyfriend and that I knew my love life was forever changed whether we stayed together or not. State of Grace was a warning sign to me from Taylor - love is a ruthless game but if I play my cards right, I could get this to work. “You tell me about your past, thinking your future with me” represented how my boyfriend had been in love before and while he told me about his past relationship, he would also talk about his future with me in it. “Stay. I’ll be loving you for quite some time. No one else is gonna love me when I get mad” represented how I could see myself being in love with my boyfriend for a long time to come and that there’s no one better who could deal with my emotions and the person that I am. “All I feel in my stomach is butterflies… I just wanna know you better..” represented the jittery, butterfly feelings I had during the beginning of my relationship and that everything had changed when I met him. 

The 1989 and Reputation albums also have their own meaning to me but here are a few of my favourite lyrics that I relate to… In 2014, I went on a trip to New York City for the first time with about 30-40 other students from my theatre class. Some of us were close friends, some of us were dating (yes, my boyfriend was also in my theatre class) and some of the people we knew on the surface level. During that same year, 1989 was released and Welcome to New York related to my trip and the experience I shared with so many other people. “Took out broken hearts, put them in a drawer” represented how no matter what anyone was going through in their life and back at home, it didn’t matter because we were having the time of our lives in NYC. “Twenty stitches in the hospital room. When you started crying, baby I did too” brings me back to a time where something bad happened to my boyfriend (I won’t go into details) but how we both cried and I knew he needed me. “Let them say what they want, we won’t hear it.. they take their shots but we’re bulletproof” reminds me of the time when I first started dating my boyfriend and multiple people were giving me warning signs about him but I knew I had to trust my gut instinct. “The light reflects the chain on your neck… he keeps a picture of you in his office downtown” is basically Taylor describing my boyfriend exactly, who wears a chain on his neck almost, if not, everyday and how when I walked into his room one time, I saw a photo of my headshot on his computer desk and immediately thought of the lyrics to this song. New Year’s Day reminds of a couple years ago when I went to a party with my boyfriend and I didn’t know anyone and during the countdown my boyfriend found me crying in the bathroom (not gonna go into details why and it wasn’t intentional, I didn’t even know the countdown was happening) but he still wanted to be with me even though I probably ruined his New Year’s Eve. There are SO MANY more songs of Taylor’s that I can relate to but since this post is longer than I intended, I’ll leave it at that. 

When I listen to the Fearless and Speak Now albums, it takes me back to the time where I was a little girl who believed (and still believes) in passionate, romantic love. Red takes me back to the feelings I had when I first started dating my boyfriend. 1989 reminds to have fun in life because nothing (including my 20′s) won’t last forever. Last but not least, Reputation reminds me of how many friendships of mine naturally faded since high school/my teenage years but I know I did one thing right and that was finding my love. Taylor’s lyrics speak my truth. They tell stories and emotions that I have no idea how to express or put into words myself.

Even if I never get to meet Taylor and thank her for everything in person, I hope one day she’ll come across this rant/letter to her. Taylor, thank you for sharing your life stories and experiences and for finding so many ways to meet your fans. There is a reason we all stick around and that’s because you stay true to yourself and after so much success, you manage to stay humble. Thank you for giving me hope since I was a little girl that true, passionate, whimsical love exists and that we’re all destined to find our person one way or another.
