Shadow Takes All
I walk upon the grey, dead ground, making my way through shadow and tight streets in the dead of night. I roam, with no other life in sight so my deeds may be done. I am but a mist, a whisper in the wind to those lonely souls walking the cold streets with no one and nothing around to ensure their safety. I am a monster that hungers, hungers for every breath you take and every chill that runs trough your body. I am but a stranger. A shadow-man following you closely, yet when you turn, I hide in my veil of shadows, awaiting the time you feel certain you're alone once more.
The towering, dark, castle-like buildings of old hide me well and cover the littlest noise I make. They are my friends, old and faithful. True to the end and they act against you, act in ways that shows your fears to me. Ways that make you so easy to hunt down. I smile as I wonder if you see my outlines in these dark times. Do you see the black top-hat on my head? Do you see my long black coat? Or is it that maybe you see my blood red scarf, swaying in the cold howling wind? How I love to make your mind wander in fear, my food.
Ah, but soon it will end and your suffering will all be but a thing of the past. No more shall the empty dark world bother you. Soon you will be in my arms and in a place much darker then you could ever hope to imagine. And so you make your way home to just one of the many dim and dirty old buildings that make up the city. You believe yourself safe. You think the tight corridors and poorly lit rooms your protectors. But you are young and naïve, little child. I have always been there waiting in the darkest corners of your room. I am waiting and hiding, watching you, oh so closely.
All is silent and empty now as the hours go past and you finish your work for the day. You feel the Sand Man tickling at your eyes. Sleep is my trap young one, and as you glance around your "empty room”, you feel like maybe that closet of yours is moving a bit to much on it's own for your liking. Ah, but there you go once more, living in this "real world" where everything is explainable and there is nothing out there to harm you. But you of all should no better. After all; this is not the first night you have seen me. Once, when you where younger you saw me and I saw you and I played such games with you, as you screamed for your mommy and daddy. "The strange evil man will get me!”, you said, over and over and your mother and father thought you mad. As did the rest of the world and soon you started thinking that too, that I was never there and it was all a bad dream but then you remember how awake you were, how wide your eyes were open and that's when you start looking around. And that's when you start seeing peaces of me: a curly stray hair there, a dirty old smile here. Yes my little duck, I am very real and waiting for that head to hit the pillow. Waiting for you to leave your stressful day behind and step into my world, where I can take control, where I can show you real fear. It is my nightmare, little girl. It's where I rule, the Boogie Man of your dreams, the thing that's hiding under your bed, and now there's no mommy or daddy to come and save you. And there's no one to tell who won’t think you mad.
And down goes your head on to that soft pillow; a moment of joy before you step on my ride. My ride of your worst fears come true. My ride of pain and suffering, my ride of monsters and demons. Dark windows that show Hell itself, doors that lead bugs and vermin crawling all over you, and to empty dark streets that are filled with the screams of the dammed and paintings that turn into the most disgusting revolting things you have ever seen. I will twist and turn your world till you give up on what is up and what is down. I will crush your faith till you know all is hopeless. It is my rules and my game, little duck. There is no winning for you.
So when peace finally comes, savour it, my little duck, savour it all you can, for I have friends to show you more horrible than I. I have new toys to test out that am sure will make you scream and maybe, just maybe I might keep you forever. But for now, the night is young and long and you're not going anywhere. Not able to move a single limb. So with a jagged smile, I approach you, my dear, and get real close to make sure you hear me when I say: "Sweet dreams, my little duck. For you're all mine and you're here to stay.” And so, with a scream I take you away to my world of Hell, where no one and nothing can save you. Till the morning comes, I promise not to let you go.
But the fun must end and the sun must shine. You have a busy day ahead, but then you always end up at the doctors, telling him all the games we play. And what dose he do? He gives you pill after pill that should help you sleep the "nightmares away”, but all the same, I’ll stand waiting by your bed till your head hits the pillows once again and you fall to slumber. Oh my duck, there is no way out. I’m always here to make you cry and suffer. This is your hell, little girl. But now this time, you will stay with us and so you are never to see the old dirty dark town again. They dump you in some hole but I’ll never leave your side. After all; you are all mine and you always will be. So sleep, sleep away, and stay with me; the Shadow Man of your dreams.
