nathan was thankful to watch the other girl turn the television down. he hated the games as much as the next person ( aside from the few people from career districts who valued the victors of the games, or those in the capitol itself ) but he couldn’t help but feel a little thankful that for as long as the games went on he got to spend a little time away from the capitol and it’s patrons. “i know.” he mumbled, looking away from her and at his hands which he was knotting together nervously, “but those are my friends. my family. you know what it’s like… the others…. they understand.” nathan sighed, “the games follow us everywhere we go. there’s no way we’re ever getting away from them.” he agreed, solemnly, “theres nowhere for us to hide from them.” he half wished he was in the games himself now, he was someone who always liked to make everything seem better than what it was, but there was no doing this now, and he found it hard to admit to himself that he couldn’t do anything to make either himself, or her feel better at all. “this is what we get.” he said quietly, “and a fucking piece of paper decided it’s what they get too.”
Tumblr media
she knew complaining did nothing. it never did, and it never would. but she didn’t know how else to express her frustration, her upset, with the capitol. with everything that was going on in their lives. “they understand. but the people who need to understand,” she paused. you couldn’t exactly slander president snow in the capitol, not with microphones and cameras everywhere. “they never will.” she paused again, pulling at a few free hanging pieces of thread on the pillow. it was meant to be lavish and expensive but she could see the rips in the thread, tears on various parts of the seams. everything was uglier up close. she put the pillow down and let out a long breath she didn’t even know she’d been holding. “the games ruined everything.” she shut her eyes, taking a deep breath. she couldn’t let herself get lost in her thoughts right now, not when she was so upset and talking about the games ------- it wouldn’t end well for her if she worked herself into a fit. “it’s bullshit and its’s not fair.” there she went again with the complaining. “how are we expected to be okay with... with this?” her finger pointed up at the screen, although she averted her eyes still. “i’m not. i never will be.” she had the sudden urge to throw something, to break the tv, to stop everything and just pause life for a second to gather her bearings. she hated the capitol and everything they had ever done to her. to nathan. to them.

saph tossed the spear gently between her hands, adjusting to the weight of it, it wasn’t her favourite weapon, that’s for sure. she was eager to get rid it at the next possible moment. she looked up to the boy at the mention of her name and nodded in response, she was about to speak when she noticed him speak again. “there’s another exit on the west side of the roof.” she said, speaking up, “i’d hate to be ambushed, i have a feeling there’s going to be a strong us against them vibe in these games.” she said nonchalantly. she was filled with regret almost immediately, not really liking the feeling of having the spotlight on her, or challenging something so weak as her first alliance in the games. “realistically though, i think we should just go through here.” she said, trying to take back what she had just said. the girl looked at her supplies ( which at this stage consisted as nothing other than a spear and the clothes she had on her back ) and decided this was going to be the longest few weeks of her life.
Tumblr media
it was obvious that getting off of the roof was not meant to be easy. if it was, this would not be the hunger games. so many would not be dead already. he knew that the exit he suggested would be a risk ---- it was a great spot to hide out and wait to kill someone. he would’ve done it. when someone spoke up, he did not expect it to be sapphire, but he focused his gaze on her and listened anyway. he wasn’t going to make the mistake of underestimating anyone in this arena. he noticed she tried to talk herself back after she spoke again, saying they could be ambushed but agreeing with his route anyway. but she made a good point. “no, you’re right. we probably would be ambushed and outnumbered.” he said, looking around the roof once again. there were even less people now, and none seemed to be around the west side at the moment. “lead the way,” he said, stepping closer to her and focusing his gaze on her. he nodded his head gently in the west direction, deciding to use this time as a way to analyze and get to know his allies here. sapphire was already proving to be resourceful and intelligent, and remy decided she might be one of their best assets.

blaise took in her surroundings, keeping an eye out for any immediate threats. she’d pushed rowan out of her mind what seemed like ages ago now, yet it seemed that once more, rowan was the only real danger to the girl. blaise spun the knife’s tip gently against a finger tip, as she kept her eyes locked onto rowan as the girl moved closer. blaise knew that for rowan, while she was determined to get out alive, it was a game for her too. she felt secure in the fact that rowan wouldn’t eliminate her, not yet. It was common sense, eliminating the highest stakes players early on just made for a boring game. blaise raised didn’t react to the image of the tribute being stuck down, she supposed rowan expected some sort of a reaction, but at this stage, blaise had immersed herself so fully into the games and their previous history that at this stage, she had become desensitised so completely to the games at this stage that she felt at times like an outsider in the whole experience. blaise stepped back slightly on the edge, “i could.” she agreed, “but it’s very unlikely.” blaise looked off target of a moment, “i wouldn’t bet on it - people probably are. but it wouldn’t be wise.” blaise took it upon herself to walk a few steps around the edge away from the other girl as more of a show of her confidence in her balance than fear from the other girl closing the distance between them. “you know you could easily get stabbed in the back, but you don’t seem too worried about that.”
Tumblr media
rowan had to admit, she was a little annoyed that her display of killing the young tribute did not get a large reaction out of the girl. she had wanted to freak her out, but also gather information on blaise’s skills ------ now rowan knew she wasn’t phased by death, or at least she didn’t let it show. she raised her eyebrow at blaise once more, growing more and more curious about her competition. it would be possible to simply reach her leg out and swiftly kick blaise in the knee, send her falling backwards off of the roof. but where was the fun in that? rowan actually had to agree with blaise on her last point. it would be unwise to bet against her. rowan understood that much at least, given the uniquely calm demeanor given the situation. a small smirk tugged at rowan’s lips when blaise said she could be stabbed, and rowan shook her head a little bit. “i’d like to see someone try. that wouldn’t be a wise move either.” she said, crossing her arms over her chest and leveling a stare at the girl in front of her. watching her walk around the ledge completely free of fear, rowan knew she was meant to be impressed by this skill and fearlessness. and maybe it was a good skill to have, but rowan refused to believe that blaise could be a better competitor than her.

And suddenly, it’s as if there’s no one in the world but these two, crashing through space to reach each other. They collide, enfold, lose their balance, and slam against a wall, where they stay. Clinging into one being. Indivisible.

kinnywrites:
day 1
nathan’s charge, the tribute he was set to mentor, had once been his own. he knew he wasn’t the only one in this situation but he couldn’t help but feel sickened by the whole situation, and he felt guilty for worrying so much about how this all was affecting him. with the boy’s family long since gone - being left as one of seven’s many orphans - daniel, his mentor, and margo, were the closest thing he had to family aside from a few other victors that had won past games. and each year the games game round and broke each of them a little bit more. nathan for the most part tried to remain positive, but being in a room where switching off the games was punishable, the boy couldn’t help but feel helpless and think of how no one ever really won the games. optimism was hard to come by, but when he looked at margo, he decided it was worth fighting for, for both their sakes. he scanned the room, and it’s exits instinctively before he turned to margo and walked over to join her on the couch, his eyes locked on the door way rather than on her. “it gives them the power when you say how horrible it all is.” he mumbled. nathan hated sounding like that, and he hated being told the same thing by others, even if it was the truth. nathan pressed his lips together before turning to face her, “i never really had the urge to root for someone, to want them to win. i always just wanted everyone to come out of it. but not this time.” he uttered, “but i agree. and this? this is their way of getting back at us all, reminding us how powerless we all are. they have me ordering the tributes of who i want to die the most to least. i’ve been able to remain partial before, you know? block it out, pretend it wasn’t happening, but not this time. they’ve got me just where they wanted.”
Tumblr media
unable to stomach the sights and sounds on the tv display in front of them, but fully aware that they would be monitored if the tv was shut off, margo reached for the remote and turned the volume down a bit, so she couldn’t hear the screaming. “and it gives them power if we sit by complacently like right now,” margo sighed, avoiding his gaze and hugging a pillow to her chest. it wasn’t comfortable ( nothing in the capitol was ) but she wanted the distraction, something else to focus on even if it was just squeezing a damn pillow. she listened to him speak, her head nodding along with the words. she agreed with him, of course. their views were pretty similar on most things pertaining to the games and panem government. margo finally sighed again when he finished speaking, licking her lips for a second as she thought. “they can’t really make us do that, can they?” her eyes lifted upwards and finally met his. “make a list? that’s sick. it’s --- it’s inhumane.” she thought about her time in the arena, wondering if people were rooting for her to live or die. she thought she would die. she had prepared herself, even accepted her death. living after that was what was so hard for her. how could she come back from that, after everything she had been through, and act like she was okay? and watch it happen again and again every year? the panic she felt when the quarter quell was announced was deep and sharp, leaving her with nightmares up until the reaping. “after all the games have done, all the damage, you’d think they might just leave us alone for once, let us try to move on even though that’s impossible.” she said it simply, as if she was just stating a fact and the sad truth was that this was their reality.

day 1
saph didn’t expect to get reaped, which would sound odd to anyone who wasn’t from a typically career district. however, she did expect that someone a little more experienced would volunteer for her. when she was younger people would often say that she’d get herself in this situation. that everyone would be happy if she made it into the games because she’s so useless they’d finally get rid of her. saph supposed that having such a strong tribute from district one, being one they knew they could count on from before, that they didn’t really need to worry about her. this may have been her fifteen minutes of fame, but she was never going to be the star of the show. saph could run. it wasn’t a particularly handy skill, but when she didn’t need to be stealthy and she just had to go as fast as she could, she was up there with the best of them. the brunette ran straight into battle, her only plan being to fake it till you make it. saph knew the other careers ( of the newer tributes ) would seek her out, they’d be looking for that assured alliance, and she decided to go straight to them, hoping most people would have been told by their mentors to avoid those from district one. saph however, decided that if she was going to do this, she’d do it right, and grabbed a spear on her way towards the other careers. a sword was as good as weapon as any, the girl wasn’t particularly skilled with any of them so she figured something long range was better. saph awkwardly swung the spear practically blindly in a wide arc, creating a shallow but surely fatal wound in the young tribute’s neck. it was a stroke of luck really. the tribute’s sword clattered to the ground, saph still drove the spear roughly into the tribute’s chest, it was a showy move, destined to draw allies to her and keep others away. it was sloppy, and something she could only do with the help of the adrenaline that was coursing through her veins. she’d hoped most people were too caught up in the blood bath to notice that while she was somewhat capable, she was easy to eliminate. saph saw a familliar face, a boy, clearly the leader of the group, speaking to the other careers, and went to join them and making her intentions to be a career known.
Tumblr media
during the two weeks of training the tributes were given before entering the arena, remy had managed to chat with some other careers and suggest an alliance, which was common among people like them. he assumed the leader position then and he maintained it still as he stood on the rooftop, his eyes roaming around the pack of careers and the tributes behind them. the crowd was slowly thinning ---- some dying, others escaping. he was still talking to them when he noticed a girl, the one from district one if his memory was correct, walking across the roof towards him. he watched her take down a tribute with a swing and a stab of a spear, impressed with her skill. a spear wasn’t a common weapon and definitely not his favorite but she seemed to be wielding it pretty well. once she had approached the group, remy assessed her now that she was closer up. she seemed strong and fit enough and he knew she wasn’t queasy about killing, thanks to her display with the spear. “you’re pretty capable with that thing,” he said to her, nodding at the spear which she held at her side, seeing the blood droplets hit the concrete and gravel. “sapphire, is it?” remy asked, raising an eyebrow at her. he had a rather good memory and doubted that he was incorrect about who she was, but he figured it was more socially acceptable to pose it as a question. “anyways -----” he addressed the group once more, “we should probably get off of this roof soon, find somewhere more secure,” he then nodded towards a stairwell some tributes had apparently found, hidden behind a camouflaged door. “i’d rather not die tonight.”
