sometimes I think about how gentle Grantaire is with Enjolras, especially compared to his usual loud and careless way of speaking. It’s as though he takes special care when speaking to Enjolras because he doesn’t want to corrupt what he sees as so beautiful.

When he’s drunk and just been rebuked by Enjolras, which “render[s] him suddenly sober”:

“He sat down, put his elbows on a table near the window, looked at Enjolras with indescribable gentleness, and said to him:—

“Let me sleep here.”

I mean, even when he’s about to die:

Just imagine everyone’s first few months of friendship with Enjolras - beautiful, radiant – the way a cold winter sun is – Enjolras, who is quiet and stoic and intelligent and intimidating. Because this is how he comes off as first, isn’t it? Enjolras himself is only vaguely aware of it, but it suits him. People listen when he talks, but he also knows how to keep quiet when others are speaking.

So they kind of all underestimate how warm and loving he can be. Not that they don’t think he likes them, they just don’t imagine he’s the kind of person to easily show it.

So imagine all of their surprise; when he writes a surprisingly honest, heartfelt but frankly a little awkward poem in Jehan’s birthday card. When he shows up in class for an entire week wearing Joly’s terrible and bright knitted hat experiment, when he knocks on Feuilly’s door on a monday night with tupperware full of food to share, since he knows Feuilly won’t have time to make himself an actual meal that week. When he’s the first to offer Bossuet his couch to sleep on when his apartment building is banned due to water damage, when he offers to fly home with Bahorel so he doesn’t have to travel alone when he learns his sister has had an accident.

All these little defining moments that made them realise that Enjolras is, in fact, one of the most loving and warm people they know. These little moment that came as a surprise at first - except to those who already knew, since they’d witnessed it first hand before - but actually made the most sense.
