“Pride.”  Kyuubey stares at the shadow.  “If you are here about our deal, circumstances have changed.  You would have to refer potential magical girls to another Incubator, who may not offer anything to you in return.”

The calm voice and blank expression belies the way it is hunched in on itself on the street, clutching its stomach.

today is march 16th which is the start of homura’s month and a half timeloop. on april 30th when she fails to defeat walpurgisnacht and save madoka she will return to this day to start over.

“That would be an elegant solution.  However, just as there are unspoken terms in the contract for a magical girl, so too are there for Incubators.  We may not suggest wishes.  We may not tell lies.  And we may not bring direct physical harm to a magical girl.”

Kyuubey’s tone is pleasant.  Its expression is flat, which while cute with a cat’s permanent smile, is unnerving on a human.  “I was concerned about emotions, but I have not experienced any.  Perhaps my soul is simply incompatible with them, despite the new biochemistry.”

What happened to your cat thing bodies?

Kyuubey’s voice is slightly lower and huskier than it used to sound in mental projections.  It also pauses before more complex words, practicing the mouth movements before speaking.  

“They endure the same fate as magical girls who become separated from their Soul Gem.  They are effectively dead, and will begin to rot.  They will remain concealed from most humans.  If I were to bring my own gem within 100 meters, I could animate the bodies, at least until decomposition sets in.”

“Any experiences they had in the time since the last ‘upload’ to my soul are lost.  Previously, I could simply send another body to consume the deceased and gain their memories, but that is no longer a possibility.”

New Default Verse

Things go the same through the 12 episodes of the anime.  Homura tells Kyuubey about witches and Madoka’s sacrifice, and Kyuubey dutifully passes the information on to the other Incubators.

This time, when it is summoned to a council, who describe a plan to capture the Law of Cycles and return to the witch system, Kyuubey points out that they’re getting enough energy for their purposes from the wraith system.  The other Incubators want more energy faster.  Kyuubey explains that the witch system makes girls so powerful in their despair that it is destined to destroy the Earth before its time.  The other Incubators say that this is an acceptable loss.

Kyuubey refuses to agree with this.  Earth is important.

Kyuubey knows that Homura, Mami, and Kyoko are the only surviving links to the Law of Cycles, the only ones who could invite her through a barrier.  It needs to keep any of them from being pushed into despair, or other Incubators from contacting them.  However, if it uses magic, even for something as small as making a cat body able to telepathically communicate, it would alert the other Incubators to its location.  It needs a body that can explain the situation without using magic.

It creates a human body.  Or not quite human: even if using magic would be too dangerous, it will still has access to its abilities.  The body is that of a middle schooler, and ages very slowly.  It can still process the Grief Seeds of wraiths through established magic, without “casting” anything new.  Kyuubey would suppress the hormones and neurotransmitters and other sources of emotion, but that risks compromising the health and function of the body, so.  It will have to deal with the inconvenience.  Previous Incubators had tried human looking bodies.  They all went mad.

The last magic Kyuubey performs is severing its soul from the Incubator collective, placing the soul into a Gem for its new body to carry, and sending the body to the middle of Mitakihari City.
