the world is divided into spirits who would like us to fuck off (most of them) and spirits yelling at us about offerings (crows that fly to my front yard daily and caw at me until I bring out snacks)
Look I know I blog a lot about supernatural shit, but I actually love the regularnatural shit even more.
Sometimes consorting with spirits means getting bitched at by a hummingbird who thinks you should refill its feeder. Sometimes it's leaving a bowl of water on the back steps for the ants, so they don't have to invade your bathroom when the weather's dry.

Oh, I don't know, I feel like the horrors of war are sort of directly opposed to the point of Anne Rice style vampires. That doesn't mean war isn't awful or shouldn't have art made about it. But fundamentally the point of at least Interview with the Vampire is--what if you were beautiful and immortal, gorgeous and untouchable to disease and maiming and aging and death, what if you were beautiful and powerful and everything was still awful? awful and pointless and suicide is distressingly common? what if you had everything and were still unhappy?
there's something inherently existentialist to IwtV. It's exactly why book Louis finds no real vampire elders--you don't get mentors in this setting, fool! You get no answers! Nothing so easy! You wait for Godot for a couple of centuries and then you give yourself to the fire.
now, as the series goes on and gets more fantastical, the force of Lestat's personality essentially drags us into a different and less bleak genre. but Louis? early game Louis lives in in existentialist hell. no god, no devil, no teachers, no masters, no answers.
existentialism is, of course, extremely compatible with the horrors of war. But the Anne Rice vampire angle isn't really, imo, because, again: what if you achieved perfection of physical form and that held no answers for you either?
So what I'm saying is that ww2 eastern europe is a fine place for a vampire story in general, but I don't think it really fits the spirit here.

I don't know, maybe there IS something to the fact that my most productive years as a writer by far happened to also be the years I was a runner as well as a powerlifter.
something something POWER OF IMAGINATION when you spend miles at a time deliberately thinking about being a gay werewolf in Montana (in winter) as you sprint through downtown and across the vertical steel bridge in 90+ degree weather and 100000% humidity.
"I am immune to cardio junkie propaganda," I say, as a weight lifter and injured therefore on the bench aerialist. "I can read Born to Run and feel nothing. It's all bro bullshit anyway. I bet I can do more chin ups than these fuckers. Who cares."
Me an hour later: what if the way to rehab the calf injury is to go running immediately.

All throughout childhood, while my peers were socializing and making friends, I studied the blade read so many books that I am now almost legally blind, which left me with vast and deeply instinctual understanding of English grammar - and next to no ability to explain how it actually works. Friends will often ask me to proofread their writing and then get very mad when I say things like, "You need to completely reverse this sentence and cut this clause entirely; no, I'm sorry, i don't know why, I just know that the way it is now ITCHES 😭"
Now, what I want to see is a fantasy story where this plays out with MAGICAL grammar. Someone from a backwater town deeply steeped in folk magic arrives at Wizard Uni where all their fellow students are like "What do you mean, we should add another '𝞯∘⋇𝞿' to the incancation because it 'sounds better'? What do you mean, 'it could just be a regional thing'?? WHAT DO YOU MEAN, 'THIS SPELL JUST FEELS LIKE IT NEEDS A LIVE RAT'????"
