Lupita Nyong’o Pens A Powerful Essay For Lena Dunham’s Lenny Letter
Tumblr media
Lupita Nyong’o and Akosua Busia in Eclipsed. Photo credit: Joan Marcus.
Today’s edition of Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner’s bi-weekly Lenny Letter includes a heartfelt contribution from Lupita Nyong’o.
In an essay, titled Why I Chose a “Small Play” over the Big Screen, the Academy Award-winning actress reflects on her career choices, or rather, why she shouldn’t have to defend her choices. The letter is inspired by a question she was asked during a recent round of press for her Tony-nominated turn in the Broadway production of Danai Gurira’s history-making story of five women during the Liberian civil war, Eclipsed.
“Why would such a big star choose to do such a small play?”
For Nyong’o the question initially seemed silly. “I’m an actress; why wouldn’t I want to be in an incredible, gorgeous, meaty piece about the complicated choices of women during wartime?” she writes. But she soon realized it went deeper than that.
“I think as women, as women of color, as black women, too often we hear about what we ‘need to do’” she writes.

Ten retro fashion trends making a comeback
Tumblr media
Fashion has been explored from all its     angles and people are now going back to the classic vintage roots. The swinging 60s were the Golden Age of freedoms, so it has been said, and contemporary designers are dashing to revive the revolutionary golden era. Street style and retailing is evolving unpredictably as trends make a grand return, writes Cynthia Mukanzi.
1. Shirt tied around the waist
Chris Brown did not invent the shirt-on-waist style. In his Loyal video, the singer has a plaid shirt tied around his waist as he jigs on. Youth saw this and immediately mimicked it, perhaps thinking it is the new cool. The likes of Cameron Diaz were rocking this style back in the 90s yet it has found its way into the present. Take a stroll in the streets of Nairobi and you won’t miss a glimpse of this.
2. Retro sunglasses
This vintage eyewear was largely associated with the hippie style of the 1960s although their use goes to as far 1920s.Reflective shades, polarised, aviator, cat eye, round and retro square sunglasses are ablaze now. Celebrity culture has popularised the sunglass style. When Queen Bey pulls that flawless look in retro sunglasses, everyone takes on the challenge. Coloured sunglasses were thought to be a clownish awkward celebrity trend in the 80s/90s but remain inexplicably fashionable in different shades just as the rest are.

On April 30, 2016, Kenya will burn approximately 105 tonnes of confiscated ivory, almost all of the country's total stockpile at an event attended by several African heads of state, conservation experts, high-profile philanthropists and celebrities which they hope will send a strong anti-poaching message. (CNN)As it turns out, whale sharks -- the biggest fish in the seas -- are gluttons for crabs. So, find a spot rich in crustaceans, and these beasts will surely follow, which is why Djibouti's coast has become a prime spot for shark whale-watchers.

On November 5, 2015 Tanzania swore into office a new President. Coincidentally he is also a John.
Tumblr media
John Magufuli is doing what has been termed the “Rwandanisation of Tanzania”. If you dont know about what Paul Kagame has done with Rwanda make Google your friend.
Here are some of the things John Magufuli has done already in LESS THAN A MONTH. Not in 3 or 6 years, one month. He’s shown a clear commitment to walk the talk but not to talk and talk and talk and talk more like we do here:
1. Soon after his election, Magufuli declared there would be no celebration of Independence Day on 9 December because it would be “shameful” to spend huge sums of money on the celebrations when people were dying of cholera. Instead, the day has been set as a national day of cleanliness, and the money will go toward street¬cleaning services. He has said everybody should pick up their tools and clean their backyards.
2. After his first official visit to the Muhimbili Hospital, and seeing the horrible state it was in, he ordered over 200 million shillings marked for “parliament parties” be used to pay for beds for people lying on the floor and sharing beds.

A Wrap Up of The Aloe Blacc Show at Blankets and Wine
Tumblr media
Aloe Blacc, clad in all black, no he really was, put up a good show. His set had me reminiscing about the music of the 90s with some of his disco funk tracks and the soul in it. He told stories in between and had the crowd on its feet. His vocals with the drummers, the saxophonists, guitarists and background vocalists came together so beautifully to give such a dope performance. So dope was this performance he got an encore. His hour was up but he had the people jumping so much the crowd asked for him back on the stand. Maybe it’s because he involved the audience and said that it wasn’t a “spectator sport” but he’d rather everyone got involved  It was that good!
