“Oh still a lot of words” he grumbled, though right now anything was too many words to handle. He wasn’t sure how he did it normally, today was all just proving too much for him. “Yeah, see that was why they were the first thing that I tried, and if not I’d still be in bed” and none of that was true. He deserved this pain so he simply had to get on with it. He was fine, he just had to ignore it and hope she believed that he was telling the truth about the painkillers.
“Sorry, but if you didn’t want to hear anything at all you could have just stayed in your car, or wore some headphones,” she chuckled. “Well you can always take a couple more, they really don’t hurt if you take a few extra, trust me,” she smiled, setting the bottle in front of them, “and well, if they are too weak I do have some good painkillers in my car from when I crushed my hand under a piano a few months back, they would for sure do the trick.”

Elliot had been out for a late afternoon walk, Lily by his side, when they spotted Callie unloading boxes from the back of her car. They’d worked together on quite a few projects in the past - Elliot helping to repaint and restore some of the items that she’d found, and the two were quite well accustomed. “Callie!” Lily called, letting go of Elliot’s hand to run towards her. Eli followed quickly, stopping to lift up one of the crates and shift it a little closer to her house, “You need some help?” He asked, a smile finding its way onto his face, “Got anythin’ interesting hiding in these crates?”
Tumblr media
“Oh, hey!” Callie grinned, when she realized who was walking down the street. “How are you, doing lil thing?” she smiled, leaning down to give Lily a hug. She turned her attention back to Elliot, “I mean, I won’t say no to helping with a few things, if you’ve got time. I haven’t actually gotten to look at everything in here, but there are some cool little pieces. I think there are handlebars from a vintage motorbike in this one,” she tapped a large box with her foot, “And a super cool old iron chandelier in here somewhere, and otherwise, it is a lot of unopened treasure”

“You know, that actually sounds pretty awesome.” Noah nodded, biting back a soft smile. “Always thought building my own house would be a pretty big achievement. Never quite had the time to manage it, though, with med school and all that.” He shrugged his shoulders softly - it had been something he and Devon had planned to do together - but none of their plans had factored out how they were supposed to. He had tried to get Callie talking on purpose, knowing that it was an easier way to keep patients occupied whilst he checked them over, “That piano sounds like it should be livin’ in Tappin’ Boots - maybe speak to Quinn about it, she may be interested in buying that.” He paused as she indicated that it was painful, gently taking his fingers away from that spot, “Uh, I built a cat tree once. From scratch - burnt myself with a hot glue gun trying to attach soft blankets to it, but the cats love it.” He shrugged gently, “Anyway, we’ll get you down to x-ray and see what’s going on with those bones.”
“Thank you,” Callie smiled, listening to him speak, “I want to build my own house, I have plans and all. Right now I’m just fixing up my little place, but down the line, in ten years or more, I want to build one. I want a big porch, wrap around, maybe even a balcony on the second floor, and lots of windows. There are a lot of things on my dream house wish-list, probably why it will take forever to actually do one day.” Callie laughed, nodding, “Yeah I’ll mention it, if she doesn’t want to buy it, maybe she can house it in the bar for a little bit. More people who would like to buy it probably go there than in my shop, might be a smart idea.” Callie stared up at the ceiling through the pain, only looking down when he spoke, “A cat tree? That’s cute, those can be super fun to make too, you can just let your imagination run wild, build a whole cat castle if you wanted.” Callie nodded, “Oh, my favorite little wheelchair trip, I’m sure Judith will have missed me down there, It’s been about two years since I broke something, although only probably 8 months since my last x-ray though,” she teased.

“Come on now,” Callie grumbled, struggling to get a decent sized crate out of the back of her truck. The glorified dented rust bucket was parked in front of her shop, and the contents were gradually taking up sidewalk space. Glancing over her shoulder she noticed someone coming, “Sorry,” she started apologizing, setting the crate down and turning, “I had a lot to pick up today, I guess it happens when you leave town for the first time in awhile, new inventory orders pile up. Didn’t mean to take up almost all your walking space...”

Jacob groaned as he realised that the other person wasn’t about to stop talking anytime soon. Perhaps if he felt more human then he would have listened… probably not. “Ok please stop, my head feels like someone just hit it with a hammer and this isn’t helping” admittedly the hangover was his own fault, but all he wanted was coffee. Granted this was about the 10th one he’d had, but still.
Sometimes Callie couldn’t help it, especially when she was excited about a new project she was working on, she had a tendency to get carried away, to ramble far beyond her welcome. “Oh, sorry, didn’t mean to,” she dropped her voice, hoping speaking quieter would also help, “Are you alright? Are you sick or? Oh! I have some painkillers,” Callie had her hand deep within her purse before the words finished leaving her lips, “Here,” she offered the pill bottle, “They could help?”

He bit back a small laugh, shaking his head. He’d never quite understand how one woman could be so clumsy, but Callie was certainly that. He’d almost lost count of the amount of times that he’d seen her over the last few months, either needing stitches put in or taken out, or having some other injury caused through her work. He’d have suggested a change in career, but perhaps that would have just been rude.
“What’s the longest project you’ve ever worked on?” He asked, curiously, as he raised an eyebrow and moved to the bottom of the bed, taking a quick look at her foot. The bruising looked pretty severe, and after grabbing some gloves, he reached out towards her, “Alright, tell me where this is most painful. We’ll get you down to X-ray after and see what we need to do.” With that, he’d lifted her foot gently and began to squeeze, just softly, checking to see if there was any exaggerated movement in any of the bones or an obvious break.
“Mmm, I mean technically I guess I would say my house,” she laughed, “I have been working on it for years, all different projects within it of course, but still sorta the same thing.” Callie tried to relax herself, releasing the tension on her foot in leg. “Other than my house, I spent a long time restoring an old piano once, it wasn’t a grand piano, but more like a little saloon half piece. It took forever to do because it was my first one, and I wanted to turn it into a cool mini bar, since it was broken beyond repair,” She babbled on more about her project, trying to ignore the discomfort in her foot, “Ow-shoot, okay right there it starts to hurt worse,” Callie interjected, her foot flinching slightly, “Have you ever done anything super crafty?” she asked, gritting her teeth, trying to distract herself.

Callie was a welcome change from the patients he usually saw; there was no fear of doctors or hospitals, no time needed to be spent calming down someone hysterical before he could even treat them. It actually made his job a little easier - and honestly, she’d been at the hospital with an injury so often that he was more than acquainted with her. Plus, he’d bumped into her around town too many times to count, and she was always pleasant enough.
He shook his head as she recounted the story, “Alright, DIY gone wrong, then.” He teased, biting back a laugh. Noah sighed as she held up her hand, before then glancing towards her foot as she continued speaking. “An antique armoire? That sounds like a break at best. You want me to remove those stitches first or have a look at your foot?”
She would be lying if she said she didn’t have favorite doctors or nurses, with how often she interacted with them, she had gotten to know some of them pretty well. Callie knew which were rude, nice, and even which were nicer to look at.
“That’s better, I rarely have projects fail, they just take very long detours before they get where they should be” she chuckled. Callie shrugged, “I dunno. I’m not the one with the medical degree, what do they say, doctor knows best?” She grinned, “It really doesn’t matter to me, Dr. Lennox, whatever you want to deal with first.”

At this rate, Gabriel wasn’t gonna be able to listen to the graphic novel audio that he had just picked up from the Humble Bundle. Of course, he should’ve known that the download would be huge and the terrible internet from the small coffee shop wasn’t going to be able to get it as fast as he would in his own apartment. Gabriel signed, canceled the download and folded his screen backward to turn the laptop into a tablet.
He pulled out his pen that he had gotten so use too and started to draw. His hand moved freely over the screen and his eyes softened. His thoughts started to wonder like it always did. When the random human sat across from him, Gabriel looked up. “Hello.” He said in a friendly matter. The hand with the pen in his hands moved as he asked the question. “Curious, what was the last thing you fixed with your own hands?”
Callie held her coffee and pastry in her hands, here eyes scanning the room for an empty seat to take. She began to walk around, glancing at all the people in their own little bubble. She took an interest in someone who was, drawing? Callie couldn’t be sure, not able to get a clear view over their shoulder without drawing a lot of unusual attention.
Maybe it was her inherently extroverted nature, or her curiosity about what he was doing, but something pushed her to take the seat across the table. “Hiya, how are you?” she replied, tearing a corner from her treat. The question made her grin, “Well, today I reupholstered a really cool sofa from the sixties. This past week I’ve fixed an antique mantle piece, reshaped an iron gate, and put back together a very cool and very old armoire. What about you?”

There were two things in life that Daisy particularly loved and couldn’t go a day without: flowers and coffee. She was on her way to the shop, even if it was her day off, she wanted to see if her grandmother needed anything. But first, she stopped by The Grind, the new place in town where the coffee was simply to die for. She was standing in line, unsure if she wanted something cold or hot when she felt someone behind her. “You can go ahead,” she said without turning. “I’m far from knowing what I want. Maybe your order will inspire me.”
Tumblr media
Callie was a creature of habit, and she quickly developed new ones. Usually she had her coffee by now, but she had been running a bit late, and the offer to go ahead was much appreciated, “Thank you!” Callie stepped around before laughing, “Oh I don’t know about that, I get the same thing every time, an iced white mocha, no whipped cream.” She repeated her order to the barista before stepping back again, “I’ve heard everything is good though, so there really is no bad choice.”

In reality, maybe running now wasn’t really the best idea. It was second nature to her though, a way to clear her head first thing in the morning. Or had been, now she didn’t seem to be able to escape any of the thoughts running through her head. Things were meant to be easier then this. But her brother wouldn’t talk to her, she wouldn’t talk to the rest of her family, and instead of admitting anything to anyone, she just ran. “Damn, this hot this early?” she muttered, stopping to try and catch her breath”.
Ridding her bike had become not only Callie’s favorite way to exercise, but also her preferred mode of transportation. However, like everything she owned, her bike was also second-hand. She was stopped trying to wiggle the chain back into place when she heard the voice near her, “Yeah, that’s the joys of summer,” she replied, “If you want to do any exercise you are probably better off trying before the sun comes up this time of year”

When things were quiet at the hospital, Noah found himself bored more often than not. With no major surgeries required at the time, he’d been relegated to the E.R - which meant spending his day stitching, gluing and dressing various wounds - or dealing with the various hypochondriacs that Raeford seemed to cater to. But he supposed that as long as he was working, he didn’t have to handle the issues arising in his personal life. His colleagues hadn’t stopped telling him that he shouldn’t be back at work yet - but did he really have another choice?
After discharging a patient, the next file he was handed had a particularly familiar name on it. He shook his head, biting back a soft laugh as he headed towards the hospital bay indicated on her file. “Alright, Callie, what have you done to yourself this time?” He asked, his tone teasing, “Please tell me it wasn’t more bad DIY?”
Tumblr media
Unlike most, Callie was not nervous going to the doctor, and was quite comfortable inside a hospital. Growing up she was a clumsy child, a trait that she never quite aged out of. Only a few weeks ago she had been in for some stitches, the removal of which was her chief reason for being there today. It was only her luck that she had managed to drop a display piece on her foot earlier, and by the coloration and tenderness she was certain she had broke it in a few places.
She couldn't help but smile at the familiar voice, despite wanting to seem mad, “Uhm, excuse me, but none of my DIY’s are ever bad. Thank you very much.” Sitting up further in the cot she raised her hand, wiggling her fingers, “I was going to just get some stitches cut out today at the clinic, but I decided that I wanted more attention than that so I dropped an antique armoire on my left foot so I could come see you guys.”

“It looks pretty bad. I mean, I thought I was clumsy - but I guess the worst work related accident I ever got in was breaking my toe by droppin’ a wrench on it.” Kenzie shrugged, laughing softly. Her smile grew as Callie spoke and she reached for her phone, “Screen’s a little cracked but it still works,” She mumbled, pulling up a photo she’d taken of the twins and passing the phone over to Callie, “They’re adorable. I guess I just can’t wait to take them home.” She laughed a little louder at her next sentence, “Y’know, if it was possible to use crutches with a fractured wrist, I’d have been outta here yesterday!”
Tumblr media
“You do realize, they make special shoes to wear in the kind of environment you work sometimes? That are made to protect your toes?” she teased. Callie eagerly reached for the phone, her eyes lighting up, “Oh my god, they are so adorable. They are beautiful, they really are.” She took a few more moments to soak the pictures in before handing them back, “It feels like a long time now, but I know you all will be home quicker than you think.” Callie smirked, “Well in that case I’m glad I didn’t let it slip where they keep the motorized wheelchairs, if you got ahold of one, no one would be able to catch ya.”

School had finished just over a week ago now, and with all of her normal responsibilities taken care of, Cassie offered to watch the shop for her aunt that afternoon. Like others in her family, Cassie had a knack for helping people find what they needed, even if they didn’t realize they needed it - it was part of what she enjoyed about working at Ever After Boutique. At the moment there were only two customers browsing, both of whom Cassie had already helped, so she found a task behind the counter to occupy her time
From where she stood, the entire shop could be seen. It wasn’t an issue of security, but rather one of appreciation. After helping out for four years, Cassie could look anywhere and see a memory. It was exactly the atmosphere she had been looking for when she made the decision to move to Raeford. She just finished a garnishing swirl on the y at the end of Rosemary when another customer walked in. Cassie immediately stopped what she was doing and turned her attention forward. “Hi! Is there anything I can help you find?“
Tumblr media
Running her own shop in Raeford meant Callie usually wasn’t able to shop around during normal business hours, not that she couldn’t leave the shop in capable hands, just that she preferred not to. However, even the most dedicated get bored sometimes, and Callie had taken the day off from managing to treat herself.
Stepping into the boutique Callie couldn’t help but smile, without fail she always found herself enchanted by the beautiful pieces that filled the room. “Hey! Yes, actually!” she chirped, making her way further inside, pulling an object from her purse, “I just recently got this, found in an old estate sale, and I just love it!” Callie laid the necklace across her hand and pushed it forward, “I just had it professionally cleaned, and I would like to get something to go with it, maybe a dress?” she motioned over the piece. It was delicate gold, filled with pale green and teal stones. “What do ya think?”

Kenzie used her good hand to brush some of her hair behind her ear, letting out a quiet laugh as she saw Callie’s hand, “Jesus, what have you done to yourself?” It was an ironic statement, considering that she was bruised all over; with two broken bones and a brain injury that clearly, were going to take time to heal. “Yeah, it’s supposed to be bed rest, but they’re taking me to the NICU a couple of times every day to see the twins, so I suppose that breaks it up a little.” Her smile faltered a little at the next question, never sure how to answer that these days, “I’m doin’ alright. Still a little sore, but I’ll get there.”
Callie chuckled, “Oh you know, the usual.” She held up her hand again, drawing a line across her wrapped palm, “I got a cut from some aluminum siding off of my old shed I was trying to repair, It’s actually not really that bad.” She nodded as she listened, a warm smile growing, “That’s nice! I bet the cute little baby potatoes love seeing you.” Callie listened, shifting down to sit in the chair, “Course ya will, nothing can stop you, Kenzie Taylor. I’m actually a little surprised you haven’t tried to make a break for it yet, but I’m glad you’re healing well.”

Mackenzie Taylor hadn’t quite come to terms with the situation that she’d found herself in. As if being in an accident wasn’t bad enough, the head injury that had caused her loss of memories only added to the difficulty of the situation. However, she was counteracting that the only way she knew how; undying optimism and a constant smile. Hearing movement outside of her hospital room she called out, “Hey– wanna come jailbreak me? You might need to carry me, but I’m startin’ to get cabin fever been stuck in this room. Plain white walls and beepin’ machinery would be enough to drive anyone crazy, don’t ya think?”
Callie Ponder wasn’t the most graceful when it came to working or repairing her house, which often landed her in for just a stitches more often than she would like to admit. Hearing a familiar voice she peaked her head in to the room, grinning, “I don’t know if I’m much good for carrying anyone right now,” she laughed holding up her wrapped hand, “Besides, you still have some resting up to do I assume.” Callie moved further into the room, perching on an arm rest of a chair, “How ya doing’?”

THE INTERVIEW;
What’s your favourite and least favourite things about your hometown?
“Oh, that’s an easy one,” she laughed, leaning back in her chair. “Favorite? How small it is. Least favorite?” she paused for a moment before flashing a Ponder signature smile, “How small it is!” She chuckled at the questioning look she got from the interviewer, “It’s both a blessing and a curse, in Raeford you know everyone, and typically everyone is willing to lend a hand, you’ll never really feel lost.” Callie took another pause, casting her eyes down to her hands, fingers fumbling with the weathered rings she wore. “But also,” she continued, keeping her eyes down, “Everyone is always in your business, they think they know everything, you know? Even if they don’t, and, well, I guess sometimes even small towns can feel awful lonely,” she finished quietly with a shrug.
What’s your relationship like with your family?
“Good, really good, thankfully,” Callie grinned, “My mom is wonderful, she is really my rock. We, well, we have been through a lot but she has always been there.” Callie readjusted herself in the chair, “I love my brother to death too, we had a great childhood, it was, hard work sometimes, but not without love you know? I know some have had it a lot worse, I consider myself lucky I think. My father, when he was alive, he was harsh, kind of old school, but he loved us, I suppose,” a breathy chuckle interrupted her words, “My uncle, his brother, has always been great. He takes care of the ranch now, but he still can be a bit of a clown, which is always funny.” Callie sighed, “My grandparents, bless them, I love them, I really do. I think they are just super old school you know? They are very traditional so sometimes that has caused,” she paused, choosing her next words carefully, “Issues.”
What are your biggest achievements and regrets?
Callie tilted her head slightly, her eyes looking off to the side, searching for her answer, “Well, I guess going to college, and graduating with honors. I never really thought I would go to college. My mom had gone, but I never saw myself going realistically. I wasn’t the best student, not the worst, but certainly not the best. I guess I am pretty proud of that,” she smiled, relaxing back in the chair. Callie waited for the next question, when she was prompted to finish her answer she frowned, squirming in the chair, “Uhm, well..” She bit her lip, chewing as glanced down. Suddenly it was as if the whole room dropped out from around her, she was frozen as her mind swirled, taking her back to her last years of high school. The boy that left her, not wanting anything to do with the baby that was growing inside her.
Absentmindedly her hands moved to cross over her stomach as she remembered those months, the months she spent largely alone. Her mother supported her carrying the baby, but everyone decided it would be best if she didn’t keep it. It. Callie never found out the sex of the baby, she didn’t want to, she thought it would be harder if she did. When the baby was born she held them for only a few short minutes before they were whisked out of the room and out of Callie’s life forever. It was a closed adoption to a family out of town. Callie didn’t know who they were, or even where. She had signed away all her rights, but it was hardly a day that went by that she didn’t think of that baby, her baby, out in the world somewhere. “Callie?” the voice broke her out of her trance, and she slowly looked back up, “Well, I try not to live with regrets,” she forced a smile, clenching her jaw, praying that they didn’t notice the tears stinging her eyes.
What is your biggest fear?
Callie was still collecting herself from the last question, blinking away her tears as she thought about what she fears. She could say she feared having a child she gave away grow up to hate her for the rest of their life, that was certainly true. Her nervous hands raised from her lap to comb through her blonde hair before she began to try and in answer, “My biggest to fear? I don’t really know,” she could say it was heights, flying or drowning in the ocean, those all seemed to be true. “I guess, I guess I truly fear being alone, and not just not being married,” as she spoke she became more sure of herself, realizing how true her words really were, “I fear losing people in life, like they would be disappointed in me, and leave, or never stay to begin with. I guess I just fear being a disappointment and driving everyone away.”
What are your plans for the future?
“I don’t know,” Callie frowned, furrowing her brows, “I would like to finish fixing up my house, I plan to live in it for a long time… I always thought I would live in Raeford forever, I mean, I go back generations in this town” she laughed. “You know,” a wistfulness clouded her eyes, “I always wanted to travel when I was younger, when I was in school I would look at maps and plan to go visit all those places. I haven’t gotten to travel much… I would like to, I don’t know if I see myself living anywhere but here, but I would like to travel in a perfect world I think,” she leaned back in her chair, nodding.
Describe yourself in one sentence.
“Just one?” Callie pursed her lips, “I guess.. I guess I would say that I am just a puzzle trying to find her missing pieces.” Shifting in her chair she began to blush, “That isn’t too dumb is it? Too metaphorical? I just feel like I have a lot left to find, I have found a lot, I’m not an empty puzzle, I got like the corners and border, I just have to fill up the middle..” Callie stumbled over her words, moving her hands about to try and help her explain her point, “I guess that isn’t just once sentence but, well, yeah. I am a puzzle just finding her pieces, and if I don’t find them I guess I’ll just have to make them.”
FIRE IN HER BONES, HONEY IN HER SOUL. SHE’S SWEET WHEN SHE WANTS TO BE AND FIERCE WHEN SHE NEEDS TO BE.
