21回目

勉強の計画は二日連続で行ったことはまだありませんが、挫折しません。とはいえ、一日ちゃんと計画に従って、それぞれの勉強のノルマを満たせれば、達成感が故に次の日は怠ける日もあるため、完璧に引き続き行うより、毎日少しずつ進んでいくことの方が大事だという実感がありました。

一度失敗しても、すぐ立ち直って頑張り続けることが自分にも可能と分かれば、より長期的に物事を続けられると聞きました。ですので、日ごとに自分のことを応援しながら、ベストを尽くしていきたいです。

例えば、本日は早番を行う予定ですので、運動すれば朝でないなかなかしないという考えで、今朝4時に起きて、ジムに通うことにしました。アラームが鳴ると、明日では運動できるだの、運動より睡眠が大切じゃないだの、色々な言い訳がすぐに頭に浮かんできましたが、それを無視し、何か起き上がりました。ただ、起き上がっても、何のためにこんなに頑張っているのだろうと鬱陶しく考えていました。

現在、苦しんであまり充実した生活を送っていなくても、いつかによくなりますので、準備として今できるのは一生懸命自己改善するに越したことはないと思い、ついに納得でき、ジムに向かいました。

この文章を作成する今でも、正直に言うと疲れています。それに、これから仕事に行き、8時間を費やしたら、また数学とプログラミングを学習しなければなりません。こういう訓練をやり続けるにつれて、いつかの間になりたい自分になれると願います。

その他、昨日聞いていたポッドキャストがテクノロジーが中心となり、ホストは２人がいます。驚いたことに一人のホストが最近機械学習用の数学を習い始めていて、数学の勉強に関する何点かのコツを紹介してくれました。

まず、本を読むだけで分かることが滅多にないですので、読んだら繰り返し門を解けたらいつかに訳がわかるようになります。それでも、理解できないところがあれば、異なった次元から、助けをまとめるしかないとのことです。彼の場合は、ツイッターで日々に習っている物事について呟くと不意にとても数学できる人が集まって、答えてあげました。加えて、機械学習勉強を機に、職場で数学得意の仲間にも出会えたため、勉強しながら積極的に助けを求めることがネットワークの一つの手法にもなることに気づいたと言いました。また、再びややこしい物事を勉強することを通して、小学の息子さんに同情できました。

結果とては知識が多くなりましたが、それより満足していたのはこんな勉強ができるなら自分にはまだ可能性があると感じたことです。

せっかくレッスンを受けてきましたので、今回のエントリでレッスンから得た情報をまとめ練習したいと思います。

今日は説明することを感想を言うことが問題になっていると先生に伝えたため、本を中心に適切な流れ��教わりました。

先生によると普通に説明する際に英語文章と同様に下記の流れで行けば、相手には連れやすくできます。

①結果

②詳細（どうやって・なぜ）

③改めて結果

しかし、本について話す場合、先に結果を言ってしまうと聞き手にあまり面白く感じてもらえません。ですので、流れを調整し次のように進めばより良いとのことです。

①主人公・登場人物を紹介

②どう言う話だったかを説明

③感想＋アドバイス

先日は同僚と一緒に昼ごはんを食べにいたところ、村上春樹の作品に対するの意見を伝えられずに引っかかってしまいましたので、まず彼の作品を例としてやりました。 １Q84

①村上春樹の１Q84では二人の主人公、女の人と男の人がいて、それぞれの話が同時に進んでいきます。

②　女性の話としては高速道路から降りて、ホテルへ誰かを殺しに行きます。男性の話としては作家ですので、配属している出版社の担当者にある若い女性の作品を編集する依頼されます。受けてから、一度あの若い女性に会ってみれば、感情的に不気味な人間だと思いながらも、編集依頼を受けることにします。そこまでしか読んでないです。

③村上春樹には独特な書き方があり、官能的な表現が多いです。それが苦手な人であればお勧めしません。

次は今読んでいる「バラカ」と言う本を使って練習しました。桐野夏生の小説をよく読みますので、一つの主人公の話に止まらずに何人もの登場人物の話が同時に進めていくようなストーリーが多いです（レッスンの前はその概念をどうすればうまく説明できるのが知りませんでした）。

「バラカ」

①主人公はバラカと言う女性で一生涯に彼女が出会う人との話です。

②背景としては、実際にあった関東大震災と同様に大震災が起きって、福島から放射能が関東に広がっています。話がその大惨事の前と後に分けてあります。

③すごく感動する話です。なぜかと言うと、バラカが震災の前と後はとても苦しい生活を送るのに、まだ生きていく勇気を持ているからです。少し暗い話ですが、それでも大丈夫なら、是非お勧めします。

レッスンの最後に先生が一言のアドバイスをくださいました。本を読む＝Input。Ouputしないといつかに説明したり、感想を言ったりできるようになるはずはないですので、せっかく読んでいますのでOutputもやってくださいとおっしゃいました。

仰ることは確かにその通りだと思います。

またチャレンジを始めますので、今回は軽い感じで最近に起きたことについて書いていこうと思います。

まず、好きな人ができました。それより、「彼」を探している中で、繰り返し勇気を出してどんなに魅力的に感じた相手でも相性が良くなければ、連絡を取れなくなるだの、別の人をお互いに探した方が良いと言うだの、自分の価値や理念などを優先しました。その経験から自分のことを愛し、リスペクトすることが大事だなと改めて実感させられてくれました。

それで、この２週間というものは感情が非常に激しくしていましたが、ようやく収まって来ましたので、自分の将来について考える余裕が得れました。思ったより、とても難しいことですよね。どういう未来を描いていきたいかについて考えるとすぐに頭に浮かんでくるのが下記の話題です。

・日本語を自由に使いこなせるようになりたいです。日本での経験から自分の日本語能力に関しては色々なコンプレクスが生じてきましたが、それを克服し、自分が「うまい」と思っているレベルを達成するまで頑張っていきたいです。

・フランス語が本格的にできるようになりたいです（もうしかすると一旦フランスに住んでみたい）。日本語の勉強を優先した結果、フランス語の勉強を長年に放っていましたが、好きですので自分のために戻る予定です。日本語　＝/＝　全て。それに、いつかに日本を去って行く日が来ても不思議ではないです。その時、どこに行くかは未確定ですが、もうしかしたらフランスに行くかもしれませんので、念のため準備した上で行ってみたいです。

・通訳や翻訳の業務が好きですが、AIが進化しつつある中、そんなキャリアの将来性が次第になくなっています。ですので、思い切って、エンジニアになりたいです。今の会社に入社してから何度も面談を受けましたが、その場いつもどういうエンジニアになりたいと聞かれます。いつもそれに対して適切に応えにくいです。実は、なりたいエンジニアは今の会社に相応しくないというか、なってもそのスキルを活かせながら配属できるポストや部署はないですので、転職さざるを得ないのです。サイバーセキュリティエンジニアかソフトウェアエンジニアになりたいと思っています。コンピュターサイエンスの免状に向けて勉強しながら、今の会社ではできるだけ、セキュリティー・技術の資格を取って最大の給料を取れるように努力しています。

・仲がいい彼氏を見つけて、結婚し、子供を作りたいと思います。すぐではなくてもいいですが、とりあえず私にいい人である限り彼氏が欲しいです。 来年の3月8日を締め切りとして色な中期的な目標を立ちました。

business japanese emails - my experience and recourses

I did not receive any formal classes or training when comes to sending formal business emails in Japanese.

It is indeed a completely ball game and normal jlpt Japanese knowledge didn’t help me at all. When I first started sending and replying to my jp boss, it took me almost 2 hours just to reply a simple email because I was so afraid of messing up and offending him. However as time goes by and learning by myself + on the go, it became easier for me to do so. I’m still far away from replying naturally and comfortably for biz jp emails but I’m happy I’ve made significant progress!

here are some resources which helped me improved my business jp for emails

リセット

①やはり、勉強時間を計算する方が効率化につながります。そうしないと自分の動力量に対して感覚が歪んでいく気がきます。自己責任にも役に立つと思いますので、改めて計算し始める予定です。

②心理的効果と日本語勉強のために、職場の業務報告だけではなく、このブログへの投稿を毎日書いて行きたいと思います。①で1日の材料もまとめるので、それについて丁寧な要約を書くことを練習していきます。

③最近、日本語力が下がっている気がします。急に相手の話に集中できなくなったり、話す時に言葉が見つからなくなったり、舌がよく回らなかったりすることがが次第に多くなってきています。

そのため、できるだけ全部を日本語で行えればと思います。サイバーセキュリティを専念にセキュリティ技術を勉強することにしましたが、日本語を使いその勉強ができれば良いと考えています。秋期が始まると英語での勉強が増えるにつれて、日本語を勉強する時間が減り、日本語力が衰える恐れがあります。また、対策を講じる必要があります。

また、日本語勉強上、本格的な勉強を習慣化にしたいです。長い間「アンキ」でのフラッシュカードのバックログが残っているため、そこで新規単語に最近触れてない状態です。

④会話力に関しては、はっきりわかりやすいように話せるため、シャドウイングによる発音トレーニングを続いていきます。1日に20分ぐらいの程度で十分です。それで、読書の際、頭の中の声がページに写っている言葉を全部「読み上げる」ほどのスピードをとります。そうしましたら、よく出てくるパータンが潜在的におさえられ、日本語で考える時にすぐに使えるように頭に浮かびます。

説明の力を伸ばそう！

スラスラ話せるようになりましたが、「で」「何が言いたいの」とよく言われるため、次のステップに成長するまでには説明のツキルを鍛える必要があると思います。

研究し、戦略を立て実践するのを楽しみにしております。

意味はまだ十分に理解しておりませんが、

本日は涙が流れたほど自分の無能さに大変落ち込んでいたところ、頭に浮かんできたのは下記の言葉です。

「仕事のために日本語力を伸ばしているわけではない。むしろ、日本語力を伸ばせるためにこの仕事をやっている。」

追加：２〜３週間前ほど、勉強時間を計算することを辞めました。どのぐらいの時間を費やしたかを知っても、それが実際の能力に直接に影響を及ばすとも限らないからです。できるでけ、AJATTの理念に沿い、何でもいつでもどこでも日本語で引き続きやれば、必ず成長を見てくるはずだと思います。

神様のおかげでやる気が戻って、英訳作業を続けられるし、絶望より希望できるようになりました。

ゴミ屋敷の掃除作業動画を見てそんなに気が楽になったことは初めてだと思います。

でも、そう言うような家の中に生えている虫の量を見ると、隣人を可哀想にしか思えません。

ゴミ屋敷が綺麗にされてから、虫は次にどこに行くと想像できるからです。

もうすぐ引っ越しする上、そういうことを考えるだに、怖くなります。

これから、ただ祈るのみですね。

How to write formal Japanese emails・正式な日本語のメールの書き方

The nonprofit I work for recently gave all us interns a really informative talk on the protocol for writing profession emails in Japanese, so I thought I’d share what I learned with you guys! Just so you know, I’ll be using some advanced vocab (including 敬語) in this post and pretty much won’t gloss any kanji. So if you’re feeling up to it, then let’s go! 行きましょう！

Subject line

For some reason our presenter did this one last, but I’m going to put it at the beginning. As in English subject lines, be plain and mention the specific purpose of your email. I have temporarily lost SO many work emails due to inane or repeat subject lines. Include your last name in the subject line if you think it’s necessary. Here’s a sample subject line for an internship application:

インターンシップ申し込み（XX大学・［名字・名前*］）

Here’s one for the nonprofit I work for:

【［非営利団体］】トピック３：コロナウイルス（11月9日開始）

Please don’t ask what I do here…it’s semi-ridiculous. (And I don’t even get paid.)

*If you have a Western name where your given name comes before your family name, it’s more up to you which order you put them in and which one you use in general, especially if you don’t know if your Japanese recipient will be able to recognize which is which (or if you’re like me and your last name is nigh unpronounceable in kana). You might want to think about this on a case-by-case basis.

Addressing the recipient

Usually the first thing you do in an English email is greet who you’re talking to. This is the same in Japanese. Here’s a basic template:

株式会社ABC XX部 ［名字・名前］様

First, you name the company* your addressee works for; second, the department; and third, their full name, accompanied by 様（さま）, not さん!

*Be careful here: not all companies are 株式会社. Basically, the first line is for their workplace. If you’re a university student like me, you might be emailing someone who works for ABC大学.

Introducing yourself

Next, you should say who you are. The format for this varies on whether you are telling them who you are or reminding them, i.e., if this is your first time emailing them or not. Here’s an introduction template for a university student:

初めてメールをお送りいたします。ABC大学XX学部YY学科*の［名字・名前］と申します。

With a first email, you state that it’s the first email and introduce yourself using 申す to be extra polite. You also state your university (if they don’t work for it already, presumably), your major, and 学科* if necessary. If you’re a double major like me, you can write XX学部 twice in a row.

Here’s a template for a second email:

いつもお世話になっております。ABC大学／XX学部の［名字］です。

Basically, you thank them for talking with you again and briefly reintroduce yourself, depending on if your university or your major is more relevant. No need to use 申す.

*I’ll be honest: I don’t really know what a 学科 is or how it differs from 学部／専攻／専門. Our presenter called it a “sub-major.” No clue what that means. Concentration, maybe? Tread carefully, my friends.

Email body

Just as in English emails, Japanese emails should be simply written and get to the point as immediately as possible. That’s more basic email etiquette than anything—after all, does anyone really want to be reading emails?

You should also use 敬語 in the email body if you can. Pick whether to use 尊敬語 or 謙譲語 and then stick with your choice for the entire email. I gotta say, I have no idea how to decide which one to use! 敬語 is so hard! Do your best!!!

Here are some useful phrases to include in your email body:

XXを添付しておりますので、ご確認お願いいたします。 = I have attached XX for you to check.

ご質問などございましたら、遠慮なくお申し付けください。 = If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

ご不明な点などございましたら、お気軽にご連絡ください。 = If anything is unclear, please feel free to contact me.

クッション言葉 (cushion phrases)

In classic Japanese fashion, クッション言葉 are phrases used to soften requests, questions, apologies…basically all manner of inconvenience or imposition. These can get pretty long, which seems to go against the general rule of concision in emails, but in Japanese these are very important. Use them in your email body.

Asking for help, making a request:

恐れ入りますが… (note: 入 here is pronounced い)

お手数おかけいたしますが…

ご迷惑おかけいたしますが…

Asking a question:

少々お尋ねしたいことがあります。

Making an apology:

誠に／大変申し訳ございませんが…

There are probably lots more of these to be discovered. Maybe someday a Japanese person will write YOU an embarrassingly polite email!

Closing

Ah, conclusions—the worst part of any piece of writing. Luckily, we have more templates. This is another case where the format varies depending on whether you’ve emailed this person before. Here’s the template for a first email:

お忙しいところ、お手数おかけいたしますが、何卒、よろしくお願い申し上げます。

Probably the most commas I’ve ever seen used in one Japanese sentence. This is all 謙譲語.

Here’s a template for if you’ve emailed them before:

今後とも／引き続きよろしくお願いいたします。

Basically, you have to thank them for their continued support/tolerance of you. 

Signature

And here we have just what we did for the addressee at the beginning, but now for you, the sender.

［名字・名前］ ABC大学XX楽部XX学科* 携帯番号：XXX メール：YYY@

Optionally, you can also link any webpage you might have (like LinkedIn) or include your home, school, or business address. I’m not totally clear on what the protocol is surrounding your cell phone number, since in the US at least I would never give that out in an email signature, but you can probably delete it or easily replace it with a work number.

*Again, substitute your place of work if necessary.

How to write a professional email in French

One of the most stressful things in French to do is write an email because there is a precise formula of brown-nosing politeness that must be displayed. Even for French people they can seem daunting. I’ve done my best to lay out the formula along with some advice to writing a professional email. Note that this lays out the formula for the most formal type of email you would write. Also, this is something found in France (perhaps Switzerland and Belgium too? Someone let me know) but this type of formality is not so strict in Québec (thank god). So without further ado, here’s how to write a professional email in French!

The subject line should

Be a nominal phrase (i.e. without a conjugated verb)

Avoid articles (un/une, le/la/les)

No longer than about 7 words

Examples :

Invitation aux Portes Ouvertes du 6 juin 2016

The opening lines

If you know the name of the person you are contacting, address with Monsieur or Madame followed by their surname

If you do not know to whom you are speaking, put “Madame, Monsieur,” this would be the equivalent of “To whom it may concern,”

If you do know their name, but you have not met and the person is of higher standing, address them with Monsieur/Madame and then their title

If you need someone to do something, use forms such as

Je vous prie de bien vouloir….

Vous voudrez bien me faire…..

Do not use any slang, anglicisms, or abbreviations

Use simple, clear phrases. Short, concise sentences are preferred.

The closing statement

Just so you guys know, all of these phrases mean absolutely nothing, they are just formalities, seriously, they are just the literary equivalent of kneeling before the recipient and bowing

If you expect a response, put one of the following forms before the final salutation. If you use number 2 or 3, you will need to add “et” before the final salutation

Dans l’attente de votre réponse

J’attends vivement votre réponse

J’attends avec impatience votre réponse

Final salutation

Start with “Je vous prie d’agréer,

Next, the recipient (Madame, Monsieur)

Followed by any one of these:

Mes meilleures salutations

Mes salutations les meilleures

Mes salutations distinguées

Mes salutations respectueuses

Mes salutations cordiales

L’expression de mes salutations les plus sincères

Mes salutations sincères

Remember, in French, family names are entirely in caps, so when you sign your name, it would sign like Hugo MARTIN

So here is a short example of an email I wrote my fictitious school department chair,

Madame la Directrice,

Je souhaite recevoir des informations par rapport à votre programme de masters. En particulier, je voudrais savoir si le programme comprend la possibilité de faire un stage pour des crédits. 

Dans l’attente de votre réponse, je vous prie d’agréer, Madame, mes salutations respectueuses.
