I wish I could tell you I'm feeling better every day that it didn't hurt me when you walked away but to tell you the truth I can't find my way and deep inside me I feel like I'm dying

« closed starter for @madisonmcss » location: downtown, across the street from stopshop
Carlos had heard about the shooting at New Year's, had heard from Juan that Shepherd Decker had been in the hospital ever since, and while Carlos and Madison had never been best friends by any stretch, he knew about the history the woman and the cop had. Considering the conversation he knew he had to have with her, he figured the least he could do was try to help her out, even just a little bit. So he'd headed to Stopshop in an effort to pick up some groceries for her.
He was heading into the store when he spotted the woman he was on his way to shop for across the street. Glancing back and forth to make sure no cars were heading his way, Carlos jogged across the street. "Madison, hey." he called out, as he moved to catch up with her, stopping a few feet away when she turned to face him and keeping his voice even and not too loud so as not to startle her. After what she had to assume about him, he knew he had to approach this situation sensitively.

« closed starter for @masoncrossx » location: mason's apartment
One of the good things, he supposed, about not much having changed in the small town since he'd gone to jail, was how easy it made it for him to track down the people he wanted to. Carlos hadn't told many people that he was being released, his brother was probably the only one who knew ahead of time. And after a few days of being 'out,' Carlos was finally starting to feel ready to see people again. One of the people at the top of that list was Mason. So after asking a few questions and finding out the man still lived in his apartment just a few blocks away from Juan's, Carlos headed that way. He knocked a few times at the door before stuffing his hands into his pockets against the January cold. He wasn't quite sure what his reception would be like, but hopefully it'd be a little less heavy than the other reunions he'd been having.

He was catching up with one of his high school friends when a familiar voice called out from the back. Carlos immediately straightened. It was a subconscious response. Even now, having not seen her in four years, his body responded just to her voice. Slowly, he turned around, unable to fight the grin that tugged at the corner of his mouth when his gaze finally landed on her. God, it felt good just to see her again. During all those years he had been locked up, the thought of her and of Gabriela were the only things that kept him going and while he'd done a pretty good job of memorizing her features before he went in, his memories would never compare to the real thing standing in front of him right now. She was just as breathtaking as ever.
He let out a breath when he realized he had been staring, reaching up to scratch his head awkwardly as he became painfully aware the barbershop had gone practically silent and everyone was staring at them. "Hey, uh..." he paused to force his gaze away from her, it was too easy to just keep staring, "could we talk?" he asked, unsure even as he made the request what the hell he would say. She had made things pretty damn clear when she stopped coming to see him all those years ago.

From the moment she stepped into the barbershop, her services were needed in the back. Money handling was a skill set not many were cut out for. There was precision, an eye, and a trained feel to be successful. With the help from Benny Rosa was able to simply look at a band and know something was off. Of course, she couldn’t know for sure without feeling the bill(s) in question but her eye had saved the Cartel from being ripped off countless times. A few heavy bags were brought in by Matias, expecting the money to be counted and checked by the end of the day. Without much of a window, Rosa and Benny got to work. Whenever a scheduled client came in, she’d work feverishly to have them in and out so that she could attend to the bags.
With only one bag left, Benny insisted they take a break; Rosa agreed. Washing her hands in the back sink, the woman pulled out a few brown paper towels to dry her hands. “All right guys,” Rosa yelled out as she began to make her way toward the floor. “Who’s ready to get their ass kicked in domin-” She suddenly became speechless. Carlos wasn’t supposed to get out for another two or three years and yet he was standing in the middle of the barbershop. Eyes from all directions stuck to them - everyone knew their history, but they also knew one thing Carlos didn’t. “Carlos.”

When he'd heard the knock at Juan's front door, Carlos froze. It took him longer than he would've liked to admit to fight off the terror that froze him to the spot. With a paranoia he never had before, he silently moved to the window closest to the door, peeking around the curtain to try to see who was knocking. The fear that the cops would come knocking, ready to throw him back in jail any day now, was hard to fight off. But when his gaze landed on Matias Santiago, the tension in Carlos' shoulders dropped... a little bit. He moved to the door, slowly unlocking it and opening up for the teniente. "It's good to be out." he agreed with a nod, pushing the door open and nodding inside for Matias to come on in. When the man had walked past him, Carlos shut the door behind them, locking it before taking a few steps towards the kitchen. "Can I get you a drink?" he asked, honestly buying himself time to wrap his head around the fact Matias was here more than anything. He couldn't help but wonder if the man was here for the cartel or for himself.

When the Narco approached Matias with the news his brother was getting out of jail, a request was made. Seeing as it was Juan's mishappenings that led to his brother's incarceration, the younger brother wanted to do something nice for his release. Taking a percentage from his earnings, Matias arrived at the Moreno home with a suitcase. Hard knuckles knocking on the door, he waited patiently for someone to open. When it finally did, Matias came to find Carlos Moreno. He looked the same as the last time he'd seen the man but yet didn't. No longer was there a softness in his eyes but a slight paranoia and mistrust. "Carlos," Matias greeted with a small smile. "Hermano, it's nice to see you free. Can I come in?"

where: his brother juan's apartment who: self para trigger warning: prison, anxiety attack
Carlos blinked a few times as his eyes adjusted to the bright sunlight. Somehow, outside of the electric-fenced perimeter of the prison yard, the sun seemed brighter. As he stepped through the gate and the cold January wind whipped past him, Carlos took in a deep breath, adjusting to what felt like an entirely different world than the one he had left behind five years ago when he was thrown into jail. The world outside somehow looked exactly the same and yet his view of it seemed tinged with some sort of menacing presence ready to pounce on him to remind him that while it looked the same, everything had changed and the world had long since left him behind.
Just as he was about to start walking, - where to, he wasn't sure since Juan clearly hadn't arrived to pick him up yet - a voice called out from behind him, from that place. "Moreno, get your ass back here!" Carlos refused to turn around, refused to acknowledge the voice. He couldn't go back, he was supposed to be free now. He started walking, just trying to put distance between him and the prison he refused to step foot in ever again. But he heard voices, even steps as someone began running in his direction. "You thought you were going home?" a cruel voice laughed at him as the steps behind him caught up, as he was shoved to the ground, handcuffs immediately tightening around his wrists, as he was dragged back into that hell-hole. Carlos tried to fight, to escape again, but as more and more hands clamped down on him, he knew he was never getting out of here.
Carlos jerked awake, nearly falling off the couch he had been sleeping on. It was just a dream. A nightmare, really. Heart pounding, he tried to take steadying breaths, but he couldn't get in enough air. His body was coated in sweat from the fear that dream had induced. Slowly, he tried to remind himself of what had really happened. Today, - well, yesterday he realized as he glanced at the clock hanging over Juan's dining table - he had been released from Tonopah Prison. He'd been let out two years early for good behavior. And Carlos had sworn from day one that he would never set foot in that place again. He was never going back, the dream a reminder of the very real fear he would feel for a while now that he was actually out, that something would happen that would get him sent back there again. Running a hand down his face, he thought of the two things that had helped calm him down whenever he was in the throws of an anxiety attack in prison; his niece Gabriela, and Rosa. Finally, he was able to take in a deep enough breath to help slow down his racing heart. He was going to get his life back. Starting tomorrow, he was going to get things back on track. Somehow. And he wouldn't let anything jeopardize that.

Name: Carlos Gabriel Moreno Age: 37 Occupation: Sous Chef at L'Ultima Cena Time living in Tonopah: Native Neighborhood: Webster Village Gang Affiliation: None Face Claim: Miguel Gomez
Biography: (parental death tw, crime tw, breaking and entering tw, child abandonment tw)
Carlos’ mother died when he was pretty young. From that moment, his little brother, who was just two, pretty much became Carlos’ responsibility. Their Dad really struggled with providing for his sons, but when Carlos was about 10 years old, he got a job that would finally allow him to pay the bills, but would require him to travel a lot. So he sent Carlos & Juan to go live with their grandparents in Tonopah Falls. Shortly after moving to Tonopah, Carlos met and befriended the girl next door. Rosa and him became best friends and remained so for the rest of their childhood.
Carlos worked really hard to be the best that he could be at… everything. He studied hard, practiced any and every sport he played as much as he could, even worked as hard as he could at being the best big brother. He wanted to make sure that by the time he graduated from high school, he would have several options to ensure he started making enough money to help his family out. But his brother didn’t have the same goals as Carlos and after falling in with the wrong crowd when they were kids, continued on a downward spiral that kept getting him into bad shit. eventually lead him to joining Los Bandoleros.
After graduating from high school, Carlos managed to get a scholarship to a world famous culinary school in Vegas. Realizing while he was there that cooking, and simply being in a restaurant environment, were his passion. The eldest Moreno thrived while he was there. When he left, he asked Rosa to keep an eye on Juan, and with the physical distance from constantly looking over his shoulder for his brother, he was able to focus and did so well. When Carlos graduated, he got a job working at a restaurant in Vegas. He planned on staying in the city, at least for a couple years and working his way up the ‘ladder’ so to speak. But after receiving a frantic call from his grandmother about how out of control Juan had gotten, how he had joined Los Bandoleros after all, Carlos packed up his bags and moved back home, feeling like his brother had been and always would be his responsibility.
Over the years, Carlos has worked at different restaurants in Tonopah, until about 8 years ago, he finally got his big break and landed a job at L’ultima Cena, Tonopah’s most upscale restaurant. Despite how bad things were with Juan, Carlos’ professional life, at least, seemed to be doing pretty well. Then, things got turned upside down six years ago when Juan got one of his flings pregnant. From the moment his niece was born, Carlos fell head over heels. Gabriela, named after Carlos in an effort to show how much Juan appreciated his older brother, became the single most important thing to him and for that first year she was alive, Carlos took care of her just as much as Juan did.
Five years ago, things came crashing down when Carlos caught his brother breaking into someone’s house in Glenn Estates. With Juan having already several priors on his record, Carlos went in after him to try to get him to leave, afraid of the repercussions his brother would face if he were caught. A silent alarm was triggered & before they knew it, the cops arrived. Not wanting his brother to miss out on all the time with his daughter, who was just a year old, Carlos took the blame so his brother could escape & was arrested in his place. Because it was his first offence, Carlos only received 7 years with a chance of getting out on good behavior. He got out after 5 and is now on the path to getting his life back, including trying to adopt his niece who he’s learned his brother basically abandoned after he went to jail.
Headcannons:
got out of jail fully hoping to rekindle things with Rosa, hasn’t realized she’s married to someone else
aspires to own his own restaurant some day, but knows it’s an uphill battle now that he has a record
carries the weight of the world & feels like everything is his responsibility (toxic trait anyone??)
though he works at an italian restaurant, carlos makes a mean chicken curry
blows off steam by spending hours at the gun range
is a little bit obsessed with astronomy and spent a lot of time as a kid (still does, when he has a chance) at the Tonopah stargazing station. He even has a a telescope his grandparents gifted him when he was a kid

« closed starter for @rcsagisele  » location: benny's barber shop
There was nothing more surreal to him than walking through the streets of 'downtown' Tonopah. Having just been released from jail yesterday, Carlos was still very much getting used to his freedom. He was able to walk down the sidewalk without guards shouting orders at him or watching his every move and he didn't know what to think about it. After five years of the same, it was hard to wrap his head around it all. First thing on his list of things to do was get a hair cut. After five years in prison, he knew he looked rough, and he didn't want to see Gabriela looking like he'd just gotten out of jail. That was what was most important to him, seeing Gabriela. Juan had told him that she had been staying with Rosa for a while now, and while Carlos could tell there was something Juan wasn't telling him, he didn't care enough to force his brother to tell him right now. He'd hear it from Rosa anyways.
That was priority number two. Getting to see Rosa. He knew it had been tough on her seeing him in jail, carrying the weight of yet again looking out for Juan and Gabriela. He hadn't quite understood why she stopped coming to see him, but he couldn't say he blamed her. But everything was going to be alright now that he was out. After the way things had been before he went to jail, Carlos was pretty certain that even after all this time, they could pick up where they left off, maybe finally be together for real.
That was partly why he came to Benny's, hoping he'd run into Rosa there, or at least get some intel on where to find her. As he walked into the barber shop, a place as familiar to him as just about anywhere else in this town, a weird feeling crept over him. He had been going to Benny's to get his hair cut for as long as he could remember. But now, after being gone for so long, it felt different. As he walked into the shop, he greeted a few of the guys, barbers who he had known for years. Everyone's eyes were on him as he walked around saying hi to people he'd known for forever, but who now didn't know what to say to him.
